The random matrix uniformly distributed over the set of all m-by-n matrices over a finite field plays an important role in many branches of information theory. In this paper a generalization of this random matrix, called k-good random matrices, is studied. It is shown that a k-good random m-by-n matrix with a distribution of minimum support size is uniformly distributed over a maximum-rank-distance (MRD) code of minimum rank distance min{m,n}-k+1, and vice versa. Further examples of k-good random matrices are derived from homogeneous weights on matrix modules. Several applications of k-good random matrices are given, establishing links with some well-known combinatorial problems. Finally, the related combinatorial concept of a k-dense set of m-by-n matrices is studied, identifying such sets as blocking sets with respect to (m-k)-dimensional flats in a certain m-by-n matrix geometry and determining their minimum size in special cases.
The Big-Line-Big-Clique Conjecture is False for Infinite Point Sets
The big-line-big-clique conjecture states that for all $k,\ell\geq2$ there is an integer $n$ such that every finite set of at least $n$ points in the plane contains $\ell$ collinear points or $k$ pairwise visible points. We show that this conjecture is false for infinite point sets, by constructing a countably infinite point set with no 4 collinear points and no 3 pairwise visible points.
Graph Coloring and Function Simulation

We prove that every partial function with finite domain and range can be effectively simulated through sequential colorings of graphs. Namely, we show that given a finite set $S=\{0,1,\ldots,m-1\}$ and a number $n \geq \max\{m,3\}$, any partial function $\varphi:S^{^p} \to S^{^q}$ (i.e. it may not be defined on some elements of its domain $S^{^p}$) can be effectively (i.e. in polynomial time) transformed to a simple graph $\matr{G}_{_{\varphi,n}}$ along with three sets of specified vertices $$X = \{x_{_{0}},x_{_{1}},\ldots,x_{_{p-1}}\}, \ \ Y = \{y_{_{0}},y_{_{1}},\ldots,y_{_{q-1}}\}, \ \ R = \{\Kv{0},\Kv{1},\ldots,\Kv{n-1}\},$$ such that any assignment $σ_{_{0}}: X \cup R \to \{0,1,\ldots,n-1\} $ with $σ_{_{0}}(\Kv{i})=i$ for all $0 \leq i < n$, is {\it uniquely} and {\it effectively} extendable to a proper $n$-coloring $σ$ of $\matr{G}_{_{\varphi,n}}$ for which we have $$\varphi(σ(x_{_{0}}),σ(x_{_{1}}),\ldots,σ(x_{_{p-1}}))=(σ(y_{_{0}}),σ(y_{_{1}}),\ldots,σ(y_{_{q-1}})),$$ unless $(σ(x_{_{0}}),σ(x_{_{1}}),\ldots,σ(x_{_{p-1}}))$ is not in the domain of $\varphi$ (in which case $σ_{_{0}}$ has no extension to a proper $n$-coloring of $\matr{G}_{_{\varphi,n}}$).

Kasraoui, Stanton and Zeng, and Kim, Stanton and Zeng introduced certain $q$-analogues of Laguerre and Charlier polynomials. The moments of these orthogonal polynomials have combinatorial models in terms of crossings in permutations and set partitions. The aim of this article is to prove simple formulas for the moments of the $q$-Laguerre and the $q$-Charlier polynomials, in the style of the Touchard-Riordan formula (which gives the moments of some $q$-Hermite polynomials, and also the distribution of crossings in matchings). Our method mainly consists in the enumeration of weighted Motzkin paths, which are naturally associated with the moments. Some steps are bijective, in particular we describe a decomposition of paths which generalises a previous construction of Penaud for the case of the Touchard-Riordan formula. There are also some non-bijective steps using basic hypergeometric series, and continued fractions or, alternatively, functional equations.

Planar flows and Plücker's type quadratic relations over semirings
It is well known, due to Lindström, that the minors of a (real or complex) matrix can be expressed in terms of weights of flows in a planar directed graph. Another classical fact is that there are plenty of homogeneous quadratic relations involving flag minors, or Plücker coordinates of the corresponding flag manifold. Generalizing and unifying these facts and their tropical counterparts, we consider a wide class of functions on $2^{[n]}$ that are generated by flows in a planar graph and take values in an arbitrary commutative semiring, where $[n]=\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$. We show that the ``universal'' homogeneous quadratic relations fulfilled by such functions can be described in terms of certain matchings, and as a consequence, give combinatorial necessary and sufficient conditions on the collections of subsets of $[n]$ determining these relations.

Manturov recently introduced the idea of a free knot, i.e. an equivalence class of virtual knots where equivalence is generated by crossing change and virtualization moves. He showed that if a free knot diagram is associated to a graph that is irreducibly odd, then it is minimal with respect to the number of classical crossings. Not all minimal diagrams of free knots are associated to irreducibly odd graphs, however. We introduce a family of free knot diagrams that arise from certain permutations that are minimal but not irreducibly odd.
Decomposition theorem on matchable distributive lattices

A distributive lattice structure ${\mathbf M}(G)$ has been established on the set of perfect matchings of a plane bipartite graph $G$. We call a lattice {\em matchable distributive lattice} (simply MDL) if it is isomorphic to such a distributive lattice. It is natural to ask which lattices are MDLs. We show that if a plane bipartite graph $G$ is elementary, then ${\mathbf M}(G)$ is irreducible. Based on this result, a decomposition theorem on MDLs is obtained: a finite distributive lattice $\mathbf{L}$ is an MDL if and only if each factor in any cartesian product decomposition of $\mathbf{L}$ is an MDL. Two types of MDLs are presented: $J(\mathbf{m}\times \mathbf{n})$ and $J(\mathbf{T})$, where $\mathbf{m}\times \mathbf{n}$ denotes the cartesian product between $m$-element chain and $n$-element chain, and $\mathbf{T}$ is a poset implied by any orientation of a tree.

The Apéry numbers $A_n$ and central Delannoy numbers $D_n$ are defined by $$A_n=\sum_{k=0}^{n}{n+k\choose 2k}^2{2k\choose k}^2, \quad D_n=\sum_{k=0}^{n}{n+k\choose 2k}{2k\choose k}. $$ Motivated by some recent work of Z.-W. Sun, we prove the following congruences:
\sum_{k=0}^{n-1}(2k+1)^{2r+1}A_k &\equiv \sum_{k=0}^{n-1}\varepsilon^k (2k+1)^{2r+1}D_k \equiv 0\pmod n,
where $n\geqslant 1$, $r\geqslant 0$, and $\varepsilon=\pm1$. For $r=1$, we further show that
\sum_{k=0}^{n-1}(2k+1)^{3}A_k &\equiv 0\pmod{n^3}, \quad
\sum_{k=0}^{p-1}(2k+1)^{3}A_k &\equiv p^3 \pmod{2p^6},
where $p>3$ is a prime. The following congruence
\sum_{k=0}^{n-1} {n+k\choose k}^2{n-1\choose k}^2 \equiv 0 \pmod{n}
plays an important role in our proof.
Very Well-Covered Graphs of Girth at least Four and Local Maximum Stable Set Greedoids

A \textit{maximum stable set} in a graph $G$ is a stable set of maximum cardinality. $S$ is a \textit{local maximum stable set} of $G$, and we write $S\inΨ(G)$, if $S$ is a maximum stable set of the subgraph induced by $S\cup N(S)$, where $N(S)$ is the neighborhood of $S$. Nemhauser and Trotter Jr. (1975), proved that any $S\inΨ(G)$ is a subset of a maximum stable set of $G$. In (Levit & Mandrescu, 2002) we have shown that the family $Ψ(T)$ of a forest $T$ forms a greedoid on its vertex set. The cases where $G$ is bipartite, triangle-free, well-covered, while $Ψ(G)$ is a greedoid, were analyzed in (Levit & Mandrescu, 2002),(Levit & Mandrescu, 2004),(Levit & Mandrescu, 2007), respectively. In this paper we demonstrate that if $G$ is a very well-covered graph of girth $\geq4$, then the family $Ψ(G)$ is a greedoid if and only if $G$ has a unique perfect matching.
Alon's Nullstellensatz for multisets
Alon's combinatorial Nullstellensatz (Theorem 1.1 from \cite{Alon1}) is one of the most powerful algebraic tools in combinatorics, with a diverse array of applications. Let $\F$ be a field, $S_1,S_2,..., S_n$ be finite nonempty subsets of $\F$. Alon's theorem is a specialized, precise version of the Hilbertsche Nullstellensatz for the ideal of all polynomial functions vanishing on the set $S=S_1\times S_2\times ... \times S_n\subseteq \F^n$. From this Alon deduces a simple and amazingly widely applicable nonvanishing criterion (Theorem 1.2 in \cite{Alon1}). It provides a sufficient condition for a polynomial $f(x_1,...,x_n)$ which guarantees that $f$ is not identically zero on the set $S$. In this paper we extend these two results from sets of points to multisets. We give two different proofs of the generalized nonvanishing theorem. We extend some of the known applications of the original nonvanishing theorem to a setting allowing multiplicities, including the theorem of Alon and Füredi on the hyperplane coverings of discrete cubes.
On the grasshopper problem with signed jumps
The 6th problem of the 50th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), held in Germany, 2009, was the following.
Let $a_1,a_2,...,a_n$ be distinct positive integers and let $M$ be a set of $n-1$ positive integers not containing $s=a_1+a_2+...+a_n$. A grasshopper is to jump along the real axis, starting at the point 0 and making $n$ jumps to the right with lengths $a_1,a_2,...,a_n$ in some order. Prove that the order can be chosen in such a way that the grasshopper never lands on any point in $M$.
The problem was discussed in many on-line forums, as well by communities of students as by senior mathematicians. Though there have been attempts to solve the problem using Noga Alon's famous Combinatorial Nullstellensatz, up to now all known solutions to the IMO problem are elementary and inductive. In this paper we show that if the condition that the numbers $a_1,...a_n$ are positive is omitted, it allows us to apply the polynomial method to solve the modified problem.

We say that a linear code C over a field F is triangular representable if there exists a two dimensional simplicial complex $Δ$ such that C is a punctured code of the kernel ker $Δ$ of the incidence matrix of $Δ$ over F and there is a linear mapping between C and ker $Δ$ which is a bijection and maps minimal codewords to minimal codewords. We show that the linear codes over rationals and over GF(p), where p is a prime, are triangular representable. In the case of finite fields, we show that this representation determines the weight enumerator of C. We present one application of this result to the partition function of the Potts model.
On the other hand, we show that there exist linear codes over any field different from rationals and GF(p), p prime, that are not triangular representable. We show that every construction of triangular representation fails on a very weak condition that a linear code and its triangular representation have to have the same dimension.

Let $Π_n$ denote the set of all set partitions of $\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$. We consider two subsets of $Π_n$, one connected to rook theory and one associated with symmetric functions in noncommuting variables. Let $\cE_n\sbeΠ_n$ be the subset of all partitions corresponding to an extendable rook (placement) on the upper-triangular board, $\cT_{n-1}$. Given $π\inΠ_m$ and $\si\inΠ_n$, define their {\it slash product\/} to be $π|\si=π\cup(\si+m)\inΠ_{m+n}$ where $\si+m$ is the partition obtained by adding $m$ to every element of every block of $\si$. Call $τ$ {\it atomic\/} if it can not be written as a nontrivial slash product and let $\cA_n\sbeΠ_n$ denote the subset of atomic partitions. Atomic partitions were first defined by Bergeron, Hohlweg, Rosas, and Zabrocki during their study of $NCSym$, the symmetric functions in noncommuting variables. We show that, despite their very different definitions, $\cE_n=\cA_n$ for all $n\ge0$. Furthermore, we put an algebra structure on the formal vector space generated by all rook placements on upper triangular boards which makes it isomorphic to $NCSym$. We end with some remarks and an open problem.
Independence number of generalized Petersen graphs
Determining the size of a maximum independent set of a graph $G$, denoted by $α(G)$, is an NP-hard problem. Therefore, many attempts are made to find upper and lower bounds, or exact values of $α(G)$ for special classes of graphs.
This paper is aimed toward studying this problem for the class of generalized Petersen graphs. We find new upper and lower bounds and some exact values for $α(P(n,k))$. With a computer program we have obtained exact values for each $n<78$. In \cite{MR2381433} it is conjectured that $β(P(n, k)) \leq n + \lceil\frac{n}{5}\rceil $, for all $n$ and $k$. We prove this conjecture for some cases. In particular, we show that if $ n> 3k$, the conjecture is valid. We checked the conjecture with our table for $n < 78$ and it had no inconsistency. Finally, we show that for every fix $k$, $α(P(n, k))$ can be computed using an algorithm with running time O(n).

We study the problem of when the collection of the recession cones of a polyhedral complex forms also a complex. We exhibit an example showing that this is no always the case. We also show that if the support of the given polyhedral complex satisfies a Minkowski-Weyl type condition, then the answer is positive. As a consequence, we obtain a classification theorem for proper toric schemes over a discrete valuation ring in terms of complete strongly convex rational polyhedral complexes.
The critical group of $K_m\vee P_n$ and $P_m\vee P_n$
Let $G_1\sq G_2$ denote the graph obtained from $G_1+G_2$ by adding new edges from each vertex of $G_1$ to every vertex of $G_2$. In this paper, the critical groups of the graphs $K_m\sq P_n$$(n\geq4)$ and $P_m\sq P_n$$(m\geq4,n\geq5)$ are determined.
