Face rings of simplicial complexes with singularities
Published • View PublicationBIB
The face ring of a simplicial complex modulo m generic linear forms is shown to have finite local cohomology if and only if the link of every face of dimension m or more is `nonsingular', i.e., has the homology of a wedge of spheres of the expected dimension. This is derived from an enumerative result for local cohomology of face rings modulo generic linear forms, as compared with local cohomology of the face ring itself. The enumerative result is generalized in slightly weaker form to squarefree modules. A concept of `Cohen-Macaulay in codimension c' is defined and characterized for arbitrary finitely generated modules and coherent sheaves. For the face ring of an r-dimensional complex Delta, it is equivalent to nonsingularity of Delta in dimension r-c; for a coherent sheaf on projective space, this condition is shown to be equivalent to the same condition on any single generic hyperplane section. The characterization of nonsingularity in dimension m via finite local cohomology thus generalizes from face rings to arbitrary graded modules.

Geometry of tropical moduli spaces and linkage of graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove the following "linkage" theorem: two p-regular graphs of the same genus can be obtained from one another by a finite alternating sequence of one-edge-contractions; moreover this preserves 3-edge-connectivity. We use the linkage theorem to prove that various moduli spaces of tropical curves are connected through codimension one.

A Simple Combinatorial Criterion for Projective Toric Manifolds with Dual Defect
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that any smooth lattice polytope P with codegree greater or equal than (dim(P)+3)/2 (or equivalently, with degree smaller than dim(P)/2), defines a dual defective projective toric manifold. This implies that P is Q-normal (in the terminology of a recent paper by Di Rocco, Piene and the first author) and answers partially an adjunction-theoretic conjecture by Beltrametti and Sommese. Also, it follows that smooth lattice polytopes with this property are precisely strict Cayley polytopes, which completes the answer of a question of Batyrev and the second author in the nonsingular case.
Equivelar and d-Covered Triangulations of Surfaces. I
We survey basic properties and bounds for $q$-equivelar and $d$-covered triangulations of closed surfaces. Included in the survey is a list of the known sources for $q$-equivelar and $d$-covered triangulations. We identify all orientable and non-orientable surfaces $M$ of Euler characteristic $0>χ(M)\geq -230$ which admit non-neighborly $q$-equivelar triangulations with equality in the upper bound $q\leq\Bigl\lfloor\tfrac{1}{2}(5+\sqrt{49-24χ(M)})\Bigl\rfloor$. These examples give rise to $d$-covered triangulations with equality in the upper bound $d\leq2\Bigl\lfloor\tfrac{1}{2}(5+\sqrt{49-24χ(M)})\Bigl\rfloor$. A generalization of Ringel's cyclic $7{\rm mod}12$ series of neighborly orientable triangulations to a two-parameter family of cyclic orientable triangulations $R_{k,n}$, $k\geq 0$, $n\geq 7+12k$, is the main result of this paper. In particular, the two infinite subseries $R_{k,7+12k+1}$ and $R_{k,7+12k+2}$, $k\geq 1$, provide non-neighborly examples with equality for the upper bound for $q$ as well as derived examples with equality for the upper bound for $d$.

Equivelar and d-Covered Triangulations of Surfaces. II. Cyclic Triangulations and Tessellations
With the $[0,1,2]$-family of cyclic triangulations we introduce a rich class of vertex-transitive triangulations of surfaces. In particular, there are infinite series of cyclic $q$-equivelar triangulations of orientable and non-orientable surfaces for every $q=3k$, $k\geq 2$, and every $q=3k+1$, $k\geq 3$. Series of cyclic tessellations of surfaces are derived from these triangulated series.

Jucys-Murphy elements, orthogonal matrix integrals, and Jack measures
Published in The Ramanujan Journal 26 (2011), 69--107 • View PublicationBIB
We study symmetric polynomials whose variables are odd-numbered Jucys-Murphy elements. They define elements of the Hecke algebra associated to the Gelfand pair of the symmetric group with the hyperoctahedral group. We evaluate their expansions in zonal spherical functions and in double coset sums. These evaluations are related to integrals of polynomial functions over orthogonal groups. Furthermore, we give an extension of them, based on Jack polynomials.

Partitioning $α$-large sets for $α<\varepsilon_ω$
We generalise the results by Bigorajska and Kotlarski about partitioning $α$-large sets, by extending the domain up to ordinals below $\varepsilon_ω$. These results will be very useful to give a miniaturisation of the infinite Ramsey Theorem.

Relations between exceptional sets for additive problems
Published in J. London Math. Soc. (2) 82 (2010), 1-23 • View PublicationBIB
We describe a method for bounding the set of exceptional integers not represented by a given additive form in terms of the exceptional set corresponding to a subform. Illustrating our ideas with examples stemming from Waring's problem for cubes, we show, in particular, that the number of positive integers not exceeding N, that fail to have a representation as the sum of six cubes of natural numbers, is O(N^{3/7}).

Conway polynomial and Magnus expansion
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Magnus expansion is a universal finite type invariant of pure braids with values in the space of horizontal chord diagrams. The Conway polynomial composed with the short circuit map from braids to knots gives rise to a series of finite type invariants of pure braids and thus factors through the Magnus map. We describe explicitly the resulting mapping from horizontal chord diagrams on 3 strands to univariate polynomials and evaluate it on the Drinfeld associator obtaining, conjecturally, a beautiful generating function whose coefficients are integer combinations of multiple zeta values.

Subword complexity and Laurent series with coefficients in a finite field
Decimal expansions of classical constants such as $\sqrt2$, $π$ and $ζ(3)$ have long been a source of difficult questions. In the case of Laurent series with coefficients in a finite field, where no carry-over difficulties appear, the situation seems to be simplified and drastically different. On the other hand, Carlitz introduced analogs of real numbers such as $π$, $e$ or $ζ(3)$. Hence, it became reasonable to enquire how "complex" the Laurent representation of these "numbers" is. In this paper we prove that the inverse of Carlitz's analog of $π$, $Π_q$, has in general a linear complexity, except in the case $q=2$, when the complexity is quadratic. In particular, this implies the transcendence of $Π_2$ over $\F_2(T)$. In the second part, we consider the classes of Laurent series of at most polynomial complexity and of zero entropy. We show that these satisfy some nice closure properties.

Chromatic number and mimimum degree of K_r-free graphs
A number of famous results about triangle-free graphs determine the maximum chromatic number of graphs of order n with minimum degree greater than n/3. In this note these results are extended to Kr-free graphs.

Large joints in graphs
We show that if G is a graph of sufficiently large order n containing as many r-cliques as the r-partite Turan graph of order n; then for some C>0 G has more than Cn^(r-1) (r+1)-cliques sharing a common edge unless G is isomorphic to the the r-partite Turan graph of order n. This structural result generalizes a previous result that has been useful in extremal graph theory.

A new type of Ramsey-Turan problems
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce and study a new type of Ramsey-Turan problems, a typical example of which is the following one: let c>0 and G be a graph of sufficiently large order n with minimum degree >3n/4. If the edges of G are colored in blue or red, then for every 3<k<(1/8-c)n, there exists a monochromatic cycle of length k.

The G-Hilbert scheme for 1/r(1,a,r-a)
Following Craw, Maclagan, Thomas and Nakamura's work on Hilbert schemes for abelian groups, we give an explicit description of the G-Hilbert scheme for G equal to a cyclic group of order r, acting on C^3 with weights 1,a,r-a. We describe how the combinatorial properties of the fan of G-Hilbert scheme relates to the Euclidean algorithm.
Deriving the Probabilistic Capacity of General Run-Length Sets Using Generating Functions
In "Reliable Communication in the Absence of a Common Clock" (Yeung et al., 2009), the authors introduce general run-length sets, which form a class of constrained systems that permit run-lengths from a countably infinite set. For a particular definition of probabilistic capacity, they show that probabilistic capacity is equal to combinatorial capacity. In the present work, it is shown that the same result also holds for Shannon's original definition of probabilistic capacity. The derivation presented here is based on generating functions of constrained systems as developed in "On the Capacity of Constrained Systems" (Boecherer et al., 2010) and provides a unified information-theoretic treatment of general run-length sets.

New Results on Two Hypercube Coloring Problems
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we study the following two hypercube coloring problems: Given $n$ and $d$, find the minimum number of colors, denoted as $χ'_{d}(n)$ (resp. $χ_{d}(n)$), needed to color the vertices of the $n$-cube such that any two vertices with Hamming distance at most $d$ (resp. exactly $d$) have different colors. These problems originally arose in the study of the scalability of optical networks. Using methods in coding theory, we show that $χ'_{4}(2^{r+1}-1)=2^{2r+1}$, $χ'_{5}(2^{r+1})=4^{r+1}$ for any odd number $r\geq3$, and give two upper bounds on $χ_{d}(n)$. The first upper bound improves on that of Kim, Du and Pardalos. The second upper bound improves on the first one for small $n$. Furthermore, we derive an inequality on $χ_{d}(n)$ and $χ'_{d}(n)$.

Circuit partitions and #P-complete products of inner products
We present a simple, natural #P-complete problem. Let G be a directed graph, and let k be a positive integer. We define q(G;k) as follows. At each vertex v, we place a k-dimensional complex vector x_v. We take the product, over all edges (u,v), of the inner product <x_u,x_v>. Finally, q(G;k) is the expectation of this product, where the x_v are chosen uniformly and independently from all vectors of norm 1 (or, alternately, from the Gaussian distribution). We show that q(G;k) is proportional to G's cycle partition polynomial, and therefore that it is #P-complete for any k>1.
