Intersective polynomials and the primes
Intersective polynomials are polynomials in $\Z[x]$ having roots every modulus. For example, $P_1(n)=n^2$ and $P_2(n)=n^2-1$ are intersective polynomials, but $P_3(n)=n^2+1$ is not. The purpose of this note is to deduce, using results of Green-Tao \cite{gt-chen} and Lucier \cite{lucier}, that for any intersective polynomial $h$, inside any subset of positive relative density of the primes, we can find distinct primes $p_1, p_2$ such that $p_1-p_2=h(n)$ for some integer $n$. Such a conclusion also holds in the Chen primes (where by a Chen prime we mean a prime number $p$ such that $p+2$ is the product of at most 2 primes).

Motivated by a question of Sárközy, we study the gaps in the product sequence $\B=\A ... \A=\{b_n=a_ia_j, a_i,a_j\in \A\}$ when $\A$ has upper Banach density $α>0$. We prove that there are infinitely many gaps $b_{n+1}-b_n\ll α^{-3}$ and that for $t\ge2$ there are infinitely many $t$-gaps $b_{n+t}-b_{n}\ll t^2α^{-4}$. Furthermore we prove that these estimates are best possible.
We also discuss a related question about the cardinality of the quotient set $\A/\A=\{a_i/a_j, a_i,a_j\in \A\}$ when $\A\subset\{1,..., N\}$ and $|\A|=αN$.
On a conjecture by Pierre Cartier about a group of associators
In \cite{cartier2}, Pierre Cartier conjectured that for any non commutative formal power series $Φ$ on $X=\{x_0,x_1\}$ with coefficients in a $\Q$-extension, $A$, subjected to some suitable conditions, there exists an unique algebra homomorphism $\varphi$ from the $\Q$-algebra generated by the convergent polyzêtas to $A$ such that $Φ$ is computed from $Φ_{KZ}$ Drinfel'd associator by applying $\varphi$ to each coefficient. We prove $\varphi$ exists and it is a free Lie exponential over $X$. Moreover, we give a complete description of the kernel of polyzêta and draw some consequences about a structure of the algebra of convergent polyzêtas and about the arithmetical nature of the Euler constant.

The arctic circle theorem of Jockusch, Propp, and Shor asserts that uniformly random domino tilings of an Aztec diamond of high order are frozen with asymptotically high probability outside the "arctic circle" inscribed within the diamond. A similar arctic circle phenomenon has been observed in the limiting behavior of random square Young tableaux. In this paper, we show that random domino tilings of the Aztec diamond are asymptotically related to random square Young tableaux in a more refined sense that looks also at the behavior inside the arctic circle. This is done by giving a new derivation of the limiting shape of the height function of a random domino tiling of the Aztec diamond that uses the large-deviation techniques developed for the square Young tableaux problem in a previous paper by Pittel and the author. The solution of the variational problem that arises for domino tilings is almost identical to the solution for the case of square Young tableaux by Pittel and the author. The analytic techniques used to solve the variational problem provide a systematic, guess-free approach for solving problems of this type which have appeared in a number of related combinatorial probability models.

We study the expected topological properties of Cech and Vietoris-Rips complexes built on i.i.d. random points in R^d. We find higher dimensional analogues of known results for connectivity and component counts for random geometric graphs. However, higher homology H_k is not monotone when k > 0. In particular for every k > 0 we exhibit two thresholds, one where homology passes from vanishing to nonvanishing, and another where it passes back to vanishing. We give asymptotic formulas for the expectation of the Betti numbers in the sparser regimes, and bounds in the denser regimes. The main technical contribution of the article is in the application of discrete Morse theory in geometric probability.

We count the number of irreducible polynomials in several variables of a given degree over a finite field. The results are expressed in terms of a generating series, an exact formula and an asymptotic approximation. We also consider the case of the multi-degree and the case of indecomposable polynomials.
Platonic solids in $\mathbb Z^3$
Extending previous results on a characterization of all equilateral triangle in space having vertices with integer coordinates ("in $\mathbb Z^3$"), we look at the problem of characterizing all regular polyhedra (Platonic Solids) with the same property. To summarize, we show first that there is no regular icosahedron/ dodecahedron in $\mathbb Z^3$. On the other hand, there is a finite (6 or 12) class of regular tetrahedra in $\mathbb Z^3$, associated naturally to each nontrivial solution $(a,b,c,d)$ of the Diophantine equation $a^2+b^2+c^2=3d^2$ and for every nontrivial integer solution $(m,n,k)$ of the equation $m^2-mn+n^2=k^2$. Every regular tetrahedron in $\mathbb Z^3$ belongs, up to an integer translation and/or rotation, to one of these classes. We then show that each such tetrahedron can be completed to a cube with integer coordinates. The study of regular octahedra is reduced to the cube case via the duality between the two. This work allows one to basically give a description the orthogonal group $O(3,\mathbb Q)$ in terms of the seven integer parameters satisfying the two relations mentioned above.

We present an operator approach to Rogers-type formulas and Mehler's formulas for the Al-Salam-Carlitz polynomials $U_n(x,y,a;q)$. By using the q-exponential operator, we obtain a Rogers-type formula which leads to a linearization formula. With the aid of a bivariate augmentation operator, we get a simple derivation of Mehler's formula due to by Al-Salam and Carlitz, which requires a terminating condition on a ${}_3φ_2$ series. By means of the Cauchy companion augmentation operator, we obtain Mehler's formula in a similar form, but it does not need the terminating condition. We also give several identities on the generating functions for products of the Al-Salam-Carlitz polynomials which are extensions of formulas for Rogers-Szegö polynomials.

An old result by Shearer relates the Lovász Local Lemma with the independent set polynomial on graphs, and consequently, as observed by Scott and Sokal, with the partition function of the hard core lattice gas on graphs. We use this connection and a recent result on the analyticity of the logarithm of the partition function of the abstract polymer gas to get an improved version of the Lovász Local Lemma. As applications we obtain tighter bounds on conditions for the existence of latin transversal matrices and the satisfiability of k-SAT forms.

Introduced in the late 1960's, the asymmetric exclusion process (ASEP) is an important model from statistical mechanics which describes a system of interacting particles hopping left and right on a one-dimensional lattice of n sites with open boundaries. It has been cited as a model for traffic flow and protein synthesis. In the most general form of the ASEP with open boundaries, particles may enter and exit at the left with probabilities alpha and gamma, and they may exit and enter at the right with probabilities beta and delta. In the bulk, the probability of hopping left is q times the probability of hopping right. The first main result of this paper is a combinatorial formula for the stationary distribution of the ASEP with all parameters general, in terms of a new class of tableaux which we call staircase tableaux. This generalizes our previous work for the ASEP with parameters gamma=delta=0. Using our first result and also results of Uchiyama-Sasamoto-Wadati, we derive our second main result: a combinatorial formula for the moments of Askey-Wilson polynomials. Since the early 1980's there has been a great deal of work giving combinatorial formulas for moments of various other classical orthogonal polynomials (e.g. Hermite, Charlier, Laguerre, Meixner). However, this is the first such formula for the Askey-Wilson polynomials, which are at the top of the hierarchy of classical orthogonal polynomials.

Turan's Theorem states that every graph of a certain edge density contains a complete graph $K^k$ and describes the unique extremal graphs. We give a similar Theorem for l-partite graphs. For large l, we find the minimal edge density $d^k_l$, such that every $\ell$-partite graph whose parts have pairwise edge density greater than $d^k_l$ contains a $K^k$. It turns out that $d^k_l=(k-2)/(k-1)$ for large enough l. We also describe the structure of the extremal graphs.
For the case of triangles we show that $d^3_{13}=1/2$, disproving a conjecture by Bondy, Shen, Thomasse and Thomassen.
Betti numbers of Stanley-Reisner rings determine hierarchical Markov degrees

There are two seemingly unrelated ideals associated with a simplicial complex Δ. One is the Stanley-Reisner ideal I_Δ, the monomial ideal generated by minimal non-faces of Δ, well-known in combinatorial commutative algebra. The other is the toric ideal I_{M(Δ)} of the facet subring of Δ, whose generators give a Markov basis for the hierarchical model defined by Δ, playing a prominent role in algebraic statistics.
In this note we show that the complexity of the generators of I_{M(Δ)} is determined by the Betti numbers of I_Δ. The unexpected connection between the syzygies of the Stanley-Reisner ideal and degrees of minimal generators of the toric ideal provide a framework for further exploration of the connection between the model and its many relatives in algebra and combinatorics.
A direct encoding of Stoimenow's matchings as ascent sequences
In connection with Vassiliev's knot invariants, Stoimenow (1998) introduced certain matchings, also called regular linearized chord diagrams. Bousquet-Melou et al. (2008) gave a bijection from those matchings to unlabeled (2+2)-free posets; they also showed how to encode the posets as so called ascent sequences. In this paper we present a direct encoding of Stoimenow's matchings as ascent sequences. In doing so we give the rules for recursively constructing and deconstructing such matchings.

We determine the minimal density of triangles in a tripartite graph with prescribed edge densities. This extends a previous result of Bondy, Shen, Thomassé and Thomassen characterizing those edge densities guaranteeing the existence of a triangle in a tripartite graph.
To be precise we show that a suitably weighted copy of the graph formed by deleting a certain 9-cycle from $K_{3,3,3}$ has minimal triangle density among all weighted tripartite graphs with prescribed edge densities.
Congruences for the Number of Cubic Partitions Derived from Modular Forms
We obtain congruences for the number a(n) of cubic partitions using modular forms. The notion of cubic partitions is introduced by Chan and named by Kim in connection with Ramanujan's cubic continued fractions. Chan has shown that a(n) has several analogous properties to the number p(n) of partitions, including the generating function, the continued fraction, and congruence relations. To be more specific, we show that $a(25n+22)\equiv 0 ({\rm mod} 5)$, $a(49n+15) \equiv a(49n+29) \equiv a(49n+36) \equiv a(49n+43) \equiv 0 ({\rm mod} 7)$. Furthermore, we prove that a(n) takes infinitely many even values and infinitely odd values.
The absence of a pattern and the number of occurrences of another
Following a question of J. Cooper, we study the expected number of occurrences of a given permutation pattern $q$ in permutations that avoid another given pattern $r$. In some cases, we find the pattern that occurs least often, (resp. most often) in all $r$-avoiding permutations. We also prove a few exact enumeration formulae, some of which are surprising.

A 2-coloring of the n-cube in the n-dimensional Euclidean space can be considered as an assignment of weights of 1 or 0 to the vertices. Such a colored n-cube is said to be balanced if its center of mass coincides with its geometric center. Let $B_{n,2k}$ be the number of balanced 2-colorings of the n-cube with 2k vertices having weight 1. Palmer, Read and Robinson conjectured that for $n\geq 1$, the sequence $\{B_{n,2k}\}_{k=0, 1 ... 2^{n-1}}$ is symmetric and unimodal. We give a proof of this conjecture. We also propose a conjecture on the log-concavity of $B_{n,2k}$ for fixed k, and by probabilistic method we show that it holds when n is sufficiently large.
Simultaneous Arithmetic Progressions on Algebraic Curves

A simultaneous arithmetic progression (s.a.p.) of length k consists of k points (x_i, y_σ(i)), where x_i and y_i are arithmetic progressions and σis a permutation. Garcia-Selfa and Tornero asked whether there is a bound on the length of an s.a.p. on an elliptic curve in Weierstrass form over Q. We show that 4319 is such a bound for curves over R. This is done by considering translates of the curve in a grid as a graph. A simple upper bound is found for the number of crossings and the 'crossing inequality' gives a lower bound. Together these bound the length of an s.a.p. on the curve. We then use a similar method to extend the result to arbitrary real algebraic curves. Instead of considering s.a.p.'s we consider k^2/3 points in a grid. The number of crossings is bounded by Bezout's Theorem. We then give another proof using a result of Jarnik bounding the number of grid points on a convex curve. This result applies as any real algebraic curve can be broken up into convex and concave parts, the number of which depend on the degree. Lastly, these results are extended to complex algebraic curves.

Motivated by Pittel's study of minimally intersecting set partitions, we investigate minimally intersecting set partitions of type B. We find a formula for the number of minimally intersecting r-tuples of $B_n$-partitions, as well as a formula for the number of minimally intersecting r-tuples of $B_n$-partitions without zero-block. As a consequence, it follows the formula of Benoumhani for the Dowling number in analogy to Dobinski's formula.
