From Orbital Varieties to Alternating Sign Matrices
We study a one-parameter family of vector-valued polynomials associated to each simple Lie algebra. When this parameter $q$ equals -1 one recovers Joseph polynomials, whereas at $q$ cubic root of unity one obtains ground state eigenvectors of some integrable models with boundary conditions depending on the Lie algebra; in particular, we find that the sum of its entries is related to numbers of Alternating Sign Matrices and/or Plane Partitions in various symmetry classes.

The subword complexity of a class of infinite binary words
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $A_q$ be a $q$-letter alphabet and $w$ be a right infinite word on this alphabet. A subword of $w$ is a block of consecutive letters of $w$. The subword complexity function of $w$ assigns to each positive integer $n$ the number $f_w(n)$ of distinct subwords of length $n$ of $w$. The gap function of an infinite word over the binary alphabet $\{0,1 \}$ gives the distances between consecutive 1's in this word. In this paper we study infinite binary words whose gap function is injective or "almost injective". A method for computing the subword complexity of such words is given. A necessary and sufficient condition for a function to be the subword complexity function of a binary word whose gap function is strictly increasing is obtained.
Mixed expansion formula for the rectangular Schur functions and the affine Lie algebra A_1^(1)
Formulas are obtained that express the Schur S-functions indexed by Young diagrams of rectangular shape as linear combinations of "mixed" products of Schur's S- and Q-functions. The proof is achieved by using representations of the affine Lie algebra of type A_1^{(1)}. A realization of the basic representation that is of ``D_2^{(2)}''-type plays the central role.

Media theory: representations and examples
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we develop a representational approach to media theory. We construct representations of media by well graded families of sets and partial cubes and establish the uniqueness of these representations. Two particular examples of media are also described in detail.

Nice Initial Complexes of Some Classical Ideals
Published • View PublicationBIB
This is a survey article on Gorenstein initial complexes of extensively studied ideals in commutative algebra and algebraic geometry. These include defining ideals of Segre and Veronese varieties, toric deformations of flag varieties known as Hibi ideals, determinantal ideals of generic matrices of indeterminates, and ideals generated by Pfaffians of generic skew symmetric matrices. We give a summary of recent work on the construction of squarefree Gorenstein initial ideals of these ideals when the ideals are themselves Gorenstein. We also present our own independent results for the Segre, Veronese, and some determinantal cases.

Some bounds on convex combinations of $ω$ and $χ$ for decompositions into many parts
A \emph{$k$--decomposition} of the complete graph $K_n$ is a decomposition of $K_n$ into $k$ spanning subgraphs $G_1,...,G_k$. For a graph parameter $p$, let $p(k;K_n)$ denote the maximum of $\displaystyle \sum_{j=1}^{k} p(G_j)$ over all $k$--decompositions of $K_n$. It is known that $χ(k;K_n) = omega(k;K_n)$ for $k \leq 3$ and conjectured that this equality holds for all $k$. In an attempt to get a handle on this, we study convex combinations of $ω$ and $χ$; namely, the graph parameters $A_r(G) = (1-r) ω(G) + r χ(G)$ for $0 \leq r \leq 1$. It is proven that $A_r(k;K_n) \leq n + {k \choose 2}$ for small $r$. In addition, we prove some generalizations of a theorem of Kostochka, et al. \cite{kostochka}.

Schubert Classes in the Equivariant K-Theory and Equivariant Cohomology of the Grassmannian
We give positive formulas for the restriction of a Schubert Class to a T-fixed point in the equivariant K-theory and equivariant cohomology of the Grassmannian. Our formulas rely on a result of Kodiyalam-Raghavan and Kreiman-Lakshmibai, which gives an equivariant Grobner degeneration of a Schubert variety in the neighborhood of a T-fixed point of the Grassmannian.

A Generalization of the Ramanujan Polynomials and Plane Trees
Published in Adv. Appl. Math., 39 (2007), 96--115 • View PublicationBIB
Generalizing a sequence of Lambert, Cayley and Ramanujan, Chapoton has recently introduced a polynomial sequence Q_n:=Q_n(x,y,z,t) defined by Q_1=1, Q_{n+1}=[x+nz+(y+t)(n+y\partial_y)]Q_n. In this paper we prove Chapoton's conjecture on the duality formula: Q_n(x,y,z,t)=Q_n(x+nz+nt,y,-t,-z), and answer his question about the combinatorial interpretation of Q_n. Actually we give combinatorial interpretations of these polynomials in terms of plane trees, half-mobile trees, and forests of plane trees. Our approach also leads to a general formula that unifies several known results for enumerating trees and plane trees.

Trees, set compositions and the twisted descent algebra
Published • View PublicationBIB
We first show that increasing trees are in bijection with set compositions, extending simultaneously a recent result on trees due to Tonks and a classical result on increasing binary trees. We then consider algebraic structures on the linear span of set compositions (the twisted descent algebra). Among others, a number of enveloping algebra structures are introduced and studied in detail. For example, it is shown that the linear span of trees carries an enveloping algebra structure and embeds as such in an enveloping algebra of increasing trees. All our constructions arise naturally from the general theory of twisted Hopf algebras.

Universal graphs with a forbidden subtree
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that the problem of the existence of universal graphs with specified forbidden subgraphs can be systematically reduced to certain critical cases by a simple pruning technique which simplifies the underlying structure of the forbidden graphs, viewed as trees of blocks. As an application, we characterize the trees T for which a universal countable T-free graph exists.

We prove that the weak order on an infinite Coxeter group contains infinite antichains if and only if the group is not affine.
How to compute the rank of a Delaunay polytope
Roughly speaking, the rank of a Delaunay polytope (first introduced in \cite{DGL92}) is its number of degrees of freedom. In \cite{DL}, a method for computing the rank of a Delaunay polytope $P$ using the hypermetrics related to $P$ is given. Here a simpler more efficient method, which uses affine dependencies instead of hypermetrics is given. This method is applied to classical Delaunay polytopes. Then, we give an example of a Delaunay polytope, which does not have any affine basis.

The critical random graph, with martingales

We give a short proof that the largest component of the random graph $G(n, 1/n)$ is of size approximately $n^{2/3}$. The proof gives explicit bounds for the probability that the ratio is very large or very small.

Branching rules for Hecke Algebras of Type $D_{n}$
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we study the branching problems for Hecke algebra $\H(D_n)$ of type $D_n$. We explicitly describe the decompositions of the socle of the restriction of each irreducible $\H(D_n)$-representation to $\H(D_{n-1})$ into irreducible modules by using the corresponding results for type $B$ Hecke algebras. In particular, we show that any such restrictions are always multiplicity free.

The combinatorics of Coxeter categories
Published in Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 360 (2008), 4211-4233 • View PublicationBIB
We present an alternative construction of Soergel's category of bimodules associated to a reflection faithful representation of a Coxeter system. We show that its objects can be viewed as sheaves on the associated moment graph. We introduce an exact structure and show that Soergel's "special" bimodules are the projective objects. Then we construct the indecomposable projectives by both a global and a local method, discuss a version of the Kazhdan-Lusztig conjecture and prove it for universal Coxeter systems.

Color degree and color neighborhood union conditions for long heterochromatic paths in edge-colored graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be an edge-colored graph. A heterochromatic (rainbow, or multicolored) path of $G$ is such a path in which no two edges have the same color. Let $d^c(v)$ denote the color degree and $CN(v)$ denote the color neighborhood of a vertex $v$ of $G$. In a previous paper, we showed that if $d^c(v)\geq k$ (color degree condition) for every vertex $v$ of $G$, then $G$ has a heterochromatic path of length at least $\lceil\frac{k+1}{2}\rceil$, and if $|CN(u)\cup CN(v)|\geq s$ (color neighborhood union condition) for every pair of vertices $u$ and $v$ of $G$, then $G$ has a heterochromatic path of length at least $\lceil\frac{s}{3}\rceil+1$. Later, in another paper we first showed that if $k\leq 7$, $G$ has a heterochromatic path of length at least $k-1$, and then, based on this we use induction on $k$ and showed that if $k\geq 8$, then $G$ has a heterochromatic path of length at least $\lceil\frac{3k}{5}\rceil+1$. In the present paper, by using a simpler approach we further improve the result by showing that if $k\geq 8$, $G$ has a heterochromatic path of length at least $\lceil\frac{2k}{3}\rceil+1$, which confirms a conjecture by Saito. We also improve a previous result by showing that under the color neighborhood union condition, $G$ has a heterochromatic path of length at least $\lfloor\frac{2s+4}{5}\rfloor$.

Petrie-Coxeter Maps Revisited
This paper presents a technique for constructing new chiral or regular polyhedra (or maps) from self-dual abstract chiral polytopes of rank 4. From improperly self-dual chiral polytopes we derive "Petrie-Coxeter-type" polyhedra (abstract chiral analogues of the classical Petrie-Coxeter polyhedra) and investigate their groups of automorphisms.

X=M Theorem: Fermionic formulas and rigged configurations under review
Published in MSJ Memoirs 17 (2007) 75-104 (published by the Mathematical Society of Japan) • View PublicationBIB
We give a review of the current status of the X=M conjecture. Here X stands for the one-dimensional configuration sum and M for the corresponding fermionic formula. There are three main versions of this conjecture: the unrestricted, the classically restricted and the level-restricted version. We discuss all three versions and illustrate the methods of proof with many examples for type A_{n-1}^{(1)}. In particular, the combinatorial approach via crystal bases and rigged configurations is discussed. Each section ends with a conglomeration of open problems.
