For a sequence $S=(s_1, \ldots, s_k)$ of non-decreasing integers, a packing $S$-coloring of a graph $G$ is a partition of its vertex set $V(G)$ into $V_1, \ldots, V_k$ such that for every pair of distinct vertices $u,v \in V_i$, where $1 \le i \le k$, the distance between $u$ and $v$ is at least $s_i+1$. The packing chromatic number, $χ_p(G)$, of a graph $G$ is the smallest integer $k$ such that $G$ has a packing $(1,2, \ldots, k)$-coloring. Gastineau and Togni asked an open question ``Is it true that the $1$-subdivision ($D(G)$) of any subcubic graph $G$ has packing chromatic number at most $5$?'' and later Brešar, Klavžar, Rall, and Wash conjectured that it is true.
In this paper, we prove that every subcubic graph has a packing $(1,1,2,2,3)$-coloring and it is sharp due to the existence of subcubic graphs that are not packing $(1,1,2,2)$-colorable. As a corollary of our result, $χ_p(D(G)) \le 6$ for every subcubic graph $G$, improving a previous bound ($8$) due to Balogh, Kostochka, and Liu in 2019, and we are now just one step away from fully solving the conjecture.

Let $Γ$ denote a $Q$-polynomial distance-regular graph, with vertex set $X$ and diameter $D\geq 3$.
The standard module $V$ has a basis $\lbrace {\hat x} \vert x \in X\rbrace$, where ${\hat x}$ denotes column $x$ of the identity matrix $I \in {\rm Mat}_X(\mathbb C)$. Let $E$ denote a $Q$-polynomial primitive idempotent of $Γ$. The eigenspace $EV$ is spanned by the vectors
$\lbrace E {\hat x} \vert x \in X\rbrace$.
It was previously known that these vectors satisfy a condition called the balanced set condition. In this paper, we introduce a variation on the balanced set condition called the Norton-balanced condition. The Norton-balanced condition involves the Norton algebra product on $EV$. We define $Γ$ to be Norton-balanced whenever $Γ$ has a $Q$-polynomial primitive idempotent $E$ such that the set $\lbrace E {\hat x} \vert x \in X\rbrace$ is Norton-balanced.
We show that $Γ$ is Norton-balanced in the following cases:
(i)
$Γ$ is bipartite; (ii) $Γ$ is almost bipartite; (iii) $Γ$ is dual-bipartite; (iv) $Γ$ is almost dual-bipartite; (v) $Γ$ is tight; (vi)
$Γ$ is a Hamming graph; (vii) $Γ$ is a Johnson graph; (viii) $Γ$ is the Grassmann graph $J_q(2D,D)$;
(ix) $Γ$ is a halved bipartite dual-polar graph; (x) $Γ$ is a halved Hemmeter graph; (xi) $Γ$ is a halved hypercube; (xii) $Γ$ is a folded-half hypercube;
(xiii) $Γ$ has $q$-Racah type and affords a spin model.
Some theoretical results about the Norton-balanced condition are obtained, and some open problems are given.
Matroid variant of Matiyasevich formula and its application

In 1977, Yu. V. Matiyasevich proposed a formula expressing the chromatic polynomial of an arbitrary graph as a linear combination of flow polynomials of subgraphs of the original graph. In this paper, we prove that this representation is a particular case of one (easily verifiable) formula, namely, the representation of the characteristic polynomial of an arbitrary matroid as a linear combination of characteristic polynomials of dual matroids. As an application, we represent the flow polynomial of a complete graph with $n$ vertices as the sum of elementary terms with respect to all partitions of positive integer $n$. Since the growth rate of the number of all partitions is less than exponential, this technique allows us to evaluate the flow polynomial for values of $n\approx 50$. We also get an explicit expression for the characteristic polynomial of the matroid dual to the matroid of the projective geometry over a finite field. We prove, in particular, that major coefficients of all these polynomials coincide with the beginning of the row in the Pascal triangle, whose number equals the quantity of elements in the corresponding matroid. At the end part of the paper, we consider one more approach, which allows us to obtain the same results of application of our main theoren by using properties of the Tutte polynomial and the classical Rota formula for coefficients of the characteristic polynomial of a matroid. In addition, we describe the connection between the matroid variant of the Matiyasevich formula and convolution formulas for Tutte polynomials.

Let $G$ be a (finite or infinite) group, and let $K_G = \mathrm{Cay} ( G;G \smallsetminus \{1\} )$ be the complete graph with vertex set $G$, considered as a Cayley graph of $G$. Being a Cayley graph, it has a natural edge-colouring by sets of the form $\{s, s^{-1}\}$ for $s \in G$. We prove that every colour-permuting automorphism of $K_G$ is an affine map, unless $G \cong Q_8 \times B$, where $Q_8$ is the quaternion group of order $8$, and $B$ is an abelian group, such that $b^2$ is trivial for all $b \in B$.
We also prove (without any restriction on $G$) that every colour-permuting automorphism of $K_G$ is the composition of a group automorphism and a colour-preserving graph automorphism. This was conjectured by D.P.Byrne, M.J.Donner, and T.Q.Sibley in 2013.
Word-length curve counting on the once-punctured torus
We classify closed curves on a once-punctured torus with a single self-intersection from a combinatorial perspective. We determine the number of closed curves with given word-length and with zero, one, and arbitrary self-intersections.
Link patterns and elliptic Hecke algebra

We compare the following three families of geometric objects: Schubert varieties in flag manifolds, matrix Schubert varieties, and Borel orbits of 2-nilpotent matrices. The first family is governed by permutations, the second by partial permutations, and the last one by "link patterns". These geometric objects admit characteristic classes in equivariant elliptic cohomology obtained within the framework created by Borisov and Libgober. We construct a Hecke-type algebra for computing elliptic classes and extend its action to include partial permutations and linking patterns. A uniform point of view facilitates a better understanding of duality.

Let $R$ be a ring with unity. The clean graph $\text{Cl}(R)$ of a ring $R$ is the simple undirected graph whose vertices are of the form $(e,u)$, where $e$ is an idempotent element and $u$ is a unit of the ring $R$ and two vertices $(e,u)$, $(f,v)$ of $\text{Cl}(R)$ are adjacent if and only if $ef = fe =0$ or $uv = vu=1$. In this manuscript, for a commutative ring $R$, first we obtain the strong resolving graph of $\text{Cl}(R)$ and its independence number. Using them, we determine the strong metric dimension of the clean graph of an arbitrary commutative ring. As an application, we compute the strong metric dimension of $\text{Cl}(R)$, where $R$ is a commutative Artinian ring.

Motivated by Berkovich's nine $q$-binomial identities involving the Legendre symbol $(\frac{d}{3})$, we establish a unified form of $q$-binomial identities of this type through a combinatorial approach. This unified form includes Berkovich's nine identities as special cases. Many such identities can be also deduced from this unified form.
Combinatorics of Complex Maximal Determinant Matrices
This doctoral thesis covers several topics related to the construction and study of maximal determinant matrices with complex entries. The first three chapters are devoted to number-theoretic tools to prove the non-solvability of Gram matrix equations over certain fields, with a focus on combinatorial applications. Chapter 4 gives a survey on Butson-type Hadamard matrices, and shows an improved lower bound on primes $p$ for the existence of $BH(12p, p)$ matrices. Chapter 5 contains the main contributions of the thesis, where the maximal determinant problem for matrices over the m-th roots of unity is discussed, and where new upper and lower bounds, as well as constructions at small orders, are given. Chapter 6 studies maximal determinant matrices over association schemes. Chapter 7 gives an application of design theory to privacy in communications, and it is connected to the rest of the thesis by the use of the theory of quadratic forms.

We study the enumeration of off-diagonally symmetric domino tilings of odd-order Aztec diamonds in two directions: (1) with one boundary defect, and (2) with maximally-many zeroes on the diagonal. In the first direction, we prove a symmetry property which states that the numbers of off-diagonally symmetric domino tilings of the Aztec diamond of order $2n-1$ are equal when the boundary defect is at the $k$th position and the $(2n-k)$th position on the boundary, respectively. This symmetry property proves a special case of a recent conjecture by Behrend, Fischer, and Koutschan.
In the second direction, a Pfaffian formula is obtained for the number of "nearly" off-diagonally symmetric domino tilings of odd-order Aztec diamonds, where the entries of the Pfaffian satisfy a simple recurrence relation. The numbers of domino tilings mentioned in the above two directions do not seem to have a simple product formula, but we show that these numbers satisfy simple matrix equations in which the entries of the matrix are given by Delannoy numbers. The proof of these results involves the method of non-intersecting lattice paths and a modification of Stembridge's Pfaffian formula for families of non-intersecting lattice paths. Finally, we propose conjectures concerning the log-concavity and asymptotic behavior of the number of off-diagonally symmetric domino tilings of odd-order Aztec diamonds.
Turán numbers for non-bipartite graphs and applications to spectral extremal problems
Given a graph family $\mathcal{H}$ with $\min_{H\in \mathcal{H}}χ(H)=r+1\geq 3$. Let ${\rm ex}(n,\mathcal{H})$ and ${\rm spex}(n,\mathcal{H})$ be the maximum number of edges and the maximum spectral radius of the adjacency matrix over all $\mathcal{H}$-free graphs of order $n$, respectively. Denote by ${\rm EX}(n,\mathcal{H})$ (resp. ${\rm SPEX}(n,\mathcal{H})$) the set of extremal graphs with respect to ${\rm ex}(n,\mathcal{H})$ (resp. ${\rm spex}(n,\mathcal{H})$).
In this paper, we use a decomposition family defined by Simonovits to give a characterization of which graph families $\mathcal{H}$ satisfy ${\rm ex}(n,\mathcal{H})<e(T_{n,r})+\lfloor \frac{n}{2r} \rfloor$. Furthermore, we completely determine ${\rm EX}\big(n,\mathbb{G}(F_1,\ldots,F_k)\big)$ for $n$ sufficiently large, where $\mathbb{G}(F_1,\ldots,F_k)$ denotes a finite graph family which consists of $k$ edge-disjoint $(r+1)$-chromatic color-critical graphs $F_1,\ldots,F_k$. This result strengthens a theorem of Győri, who settled the case that $F_1=\cdots =F_k = K_{r+1}$.
Wang, Kang and Xue %[J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 159 (2023) 20--41] proved that ${\rm SPEX}(n,H)\subseteq {\rm EX}(n,H)$ for $n$ sufficiently large and any graph $H$ with ${\rm ex}(n,H)=e(T_{n,r})+O(1)$. As an application of our first theorem, we show that ${\rm SPEX}(n,\mathcal{H})\subseteq {\rm EX}(n,\mathcal{H})$ for $n$ sufficiently large and any finite family $\mathcal{H}$ with ${\rm ex}(n,\mathcal{H})<e(T_{n,r})+\lfloor \frac{n}{2r}\rfloor$. As an application of our second theorem we completely determine ${\rm SPEX}\big(n,\mathbb{G}(F_1,\ldots,F_k)\big)$ for $n$ sufficiently large.
Finally, related problems are proposed for further research.

Generalized taxicab numbers are the smallest positive integers that are the sum of exactly $j$, positive $k$-th powers in exactly $m$ distinct ways. This paper is considers for which values of $m$ does a smallest such integer exist as $j$ gets large. There appear to be only two possible outcomes, leading to curious results like there is no positive integer that can be expressed as the sum of exactly $10$ positive squares in exactly $3$ ways. This paper resolves a number of conjectures found in the OEIS by considering generalized Taxicab numbers in the setting of the theory of partitions.
On set systems with strongly restricted intersections

Set systems with strongly restricted intersections, called $α$-intersecting families for a vector $α$, were introduced recently as a generalization of several well-studied intersecting families including the classical oddtown and eventown. Given a binary vector $α=(a_1, \ldots, a_k)$, a collection $\mathcal F$ of subsets over an $n$ element set is an $α$-intersecting family modulo $2$ if for each $i=1,2,\ldots,k$, all $i$-wise intersections of distinct members in $\mathcal F$ have sizes with the same parity as $a_i$. Let $f_α(n)$ denote the maximum size of such a family. In this paper, we study the asymptotic behavior of $f_α(n)$ when $n$ goes to infinity. We show that if $t$ is the maximum integer such that $a_t=1$ and $2t\leq k$, then $f_{α(n)} \sim {(t! n)}^{\frac 1 t}$. More importantly, we show that for any constant $c$, as the length $k$ goes larger, $f_α(n)$ is upper bounded by $O (n^c)$ for almost all $α$. Equivalently, no matter what $k$ is, there are only finitely many $α$ satisfying $f_α(n)=Ω(n^c)$. This answers an open problem raised by Johnston and O'Neill in 2023. All of our results can be generalized to modulo $p$ setting for any prime $p$ smoothly.

A radio labelling of a graph $G$ is a mapping $f : V(G) \rightarrow \{0, 1, 2,\ldots\}$ such that $|f(u)-f(v)|\geq diam(G) + 1 - d(u,v)$ for every pair of distinct vertices $u,v$ of $G$, where $diam(G)$ is the diameter of $G$ and $d(u,v)$ is the distance between $u$ and $v$ in $G$. The radio number $rn(G)$ of $G$ is the smallest integer $k$ such that $G$ admits a radio labelling $f$ with $\max\{f(v):v \in V(G)\} = k$. In this paper, we give a lower bound for the radio number of the Cartesian product of a tree and a complete graph and give two necessary and sufficient conditions to achieve the lower bound. We also give three sufficient conditions to achieve the lower bound. We determine the radio number for the Cartesian product of a level-wise regular trees and a complete graph which attains the lower bound. The radio number for the Cartesian product of a path and a complete graph derived in [Radio number for the product of a path and a complete graph, J. Comb. Optim., 30 (2015), 139-149] can be obtained using our results in a short way.
Asymptotics of relaxed $k$-ary trees
A relaxed $k$-ary tree is an ordered directed acyclic graph with a unique source and sink in which every node has out-degree $k$. These objects arise in the compression of trees in which some repeated subtrees are factored and repeated appearances are replaced by pointers. We prove an asymptotic theta-result for the number of relaxed $k$-ary tree with $n$ nodes for $n \to \infty$. This generalizes the previously proved binary case to arbitrary finite arity, and shows that the seldom observed phenomenon of a stretched exponential term $e^{c n^{1/3}}$ appears in all these cases. We also derive the recurrences for compacted $k$-ary trees in which all subtrees are unique and minimal deterministic finite automata accepting a finite language over a finite alphabet.
Gamma positivity of variations of $(α,t)$-Eulerian polynomials
In 1977 Carlitz and Scoville introduced the cycle $(α,t)$-Eulerian polynomials $A^{\mathrm{cyc}}_n(x,y, t\,|\,α)$ by enumerating permutations with respect to the number of excedances, drops, fixed points and cycles. In this paper, we introduce a nine-variable generalization of the Eulerian polynomials $A_n(u_1,u_2,u_3,u_4, f, g, t\,|\,α, β)$ in terms of descent based statistics of permutations and prove a connection formula between these two kinds of generalized Eulerian polynomials. By exploring the connection formula, we derive plainly the exponential generating function of the latter polynomials and various $γ$-positive formulas for variants of Eulerian polynomials. In particular, our results unify and strengthen the recent results by Ji and Ji-Lin. In related work to the transition matrix between the Specht and web bases, Hwang, Jang and Oh recently introduced the web permutations, which can be characterised by cycle André permutations. We show that enumerating the latter permutations with respect to the number of drops, fixed points and cycles gives rise to the normalised $γ$-vectors of the $(α,t)$-Eulerian polynomials. Our result generalizes and unifies several known results in the literature.
Monochromatic Polynomial sumset structures on $\mathbb{N}$: an ultrafilter proof
Recently, using machinery's from Ergodic theory, Z. Lian, and R. Xiao proved if $P$ is any polynomial with no constant term, then for every finite coloring of $\mathbb{N}$, there exists two infinite subsets $B,C$ of $\mathbb{N}$ such that the set $\{P(b)+P(c):b\in B, c\in C\}$ is monochromatic. In this article we improve their result by proving that instead of taking such polynomials we can choose any function $f$ having the property that $f(\mathbb{N})\setminus \mathbb{N}$ is finite. We use ultrafilter techniques to prove our result.
An improved spectral lower bound of treewidth

We show that for every $n$-vertex graph with at least one edge, its treewidth is greater than or equal to $n λ_{2} / (Δ+ λ_{2}) - 1$, where $Δ$ and $λ_{2}$ are the maximum degree and the second smallest Laplacian eigenvalue of the graph, respectively. This lower bound improves the one by Chandran and Subramanian [Inf. Process. Lett., 2003] and the subsequent one by the authors of the present paper [IEICE Trans. Inf. Syst., 2024]. The new lower bound is almost tight in the sense that there is an infinite family of graphs such that the lower bound is only $1$ less than the treewidth for each graph in the family. Additionally, using similar techniques, we also present a lower bound of treewidth in terms of the largest and the second smallest Laplacian eigenvalues.
The global and local limit of the continuous-time Mallows process

Continuous-time Mallows processes are processes of random permutations of the set $\{1, \ldots, n\}$ whose marginal at time $t$ is the Mallows distribution with parameter $t$. Recently Corsini showed that there exists a unique Markov Mallows process whose left inversions are independent counting processes. We prove that this process admits a global and a local limit as $n \to \infty$. The global limit, obtained after suitably rescaling space and time, is an explicit stochastic process on $[0,1]$ whose description is based on the permuton limit of the Mallows distribution, analyzed by Starr. The local limit is a process of permutations of $\mathbb{Z}$ which is closely related to the construction of the Mallows distribution on permutations of $\mathbb{Z}$ due to Gnedin and Olshanski. Our results demonstrate an analogy between the asymptotic behavior of Mallows processes and the recently studied limiting properties of random sorting networks.
