We construct and study cluster algebra structures in rings of invariants of the special linear group action on collections of three-dimensional vectors, covectors, and matrices. The construction uses Kuperberg's calculus of webs on marked surfaces with boundary.

The rings of SL(V) invariants of configurations of vectors and linear forms in a finite-dimensional complex vector space V were explicitly described by Hermann Weyl in the 1930s. We show that when V is 3-dimensional, each of these rings carries a natural cluster algebra structure (typically, many of them) whose cluster variables include Weyl's generators. We describe and explore these cluster structures using the combinatorial machinery of tensor diagrams. A key role is played by the web bases introduced by G.Kuperberg.

We generalize Fomin and Zelevinsky's cluster algebras by allowing exchange polynomials to be arbitrary irreducible polynomials, rather than binomials.

In [LP] we introduced Laurent phenomenon algebras, a generalization of cluster algebras. Here we give an explicit description of Laurent phenomenon algebras with a linear initial seed arising from a graph. In particular, any graph associahedron is shown to be the dual cluster complex for some Laurent phenomenon algebra.
Inverse problem in cylindrical electrical networks

In this paper we study the inverse Dirichlet-to-Neumann problem for certain cylindrical electrical networks. We define and study a birational transformation acting on cylindrical electrical networks called the electrical $R$-matrix. We use this transformation to formulate a general conjectural solution to this inverse problem on the cylinder. This conjecture extends work of Curtis, Ingerman, and Morrow, and of de Verdière, Gitler, and Vertigan for circular planar electrical networks. We show that our conjectural solution holds for certain "purely cylindrical" networks. Here we apply the grove combinatorics introduced by Kenyon and Wilson.

We introduce a new class of "electrical" Lie groups. These Lie groups, or more precisely their nonnegative parts, act on the space of planar electrical networks via combinatorial operations previously studied by Curtis-Ingerman-Morrow. The corresponding electrical Lie algebras are obtained by deforming the Serre relations of a semisimple Lie algebra in a way suggested by the star-triangle transformation of electrical networks. Rather surprisingly, we show that the type A electrical Lie group is isomorphic to the symplectic group. The nonnegative part (EL_{2n})_{\geq 0} of the electrical Lie group is a rather precise analogue of the totally nonnegative subsemigroup (U_{n})_{\geq 0} of the unipotent subgroup of SL_{n}. We establish decomposition and parametrization results for (EL_{2n})_{\geq 0}, paralleling Lusztig's work in total nonnegativity, and work of Curtis-Ingerman-Morrow and de Verdière-Gitler-Vertigan for networks. Finally, we suggest a generalization of electrical Lie algebras to all Dynkin types.
Crystals and total positivity on orientable surfaces

We develop a combinatorial model of networks on orientable surfaces, and study weight and homology generating functions of paths and cycles in these networks. Network transformations preserving these generating functions are investigated.
We describe in terms of our model the crystal structure and R-matrix of the affine geometric crystal of products of symmetric and dual symmetric powers of type A. Local realizations of the R-matrix and crystal actions are used to construct a double affine geometric crystal on a torus, generalizing the commutation result of Kajiwara-Noumi-Yamada and an observation of Berenstein-Kazhdan.
We show that our model on a cylinder gives a decomposition and parametrization of the totally nonnegative part of the rational unipotent loop group of GL_n.

We study products of the affine geometric crystal of type A corresponding to symmetric powers of the standard representation. The quotient of this product by the R-matrix action is constructed inside the unipotent loop group. This quotient crystal has a semi-infinite limit, where the crystal structure is described in terms of limit ratios previously appearing in the study of total positivity of loop groups.

We give an explicit subtraction-free formula for the energy function in tensor products of Kirillov-Reshetikhin crystals for symmetric powers of the standard representation of U_q'(\hat sl_n). The energy function is shown to be the tropicalization of a stretched staircase shape loop Schur function. The latter were introduced by the authors in the study of total positivity in loop groups.
Total positivity in loop groups II: Chevalley generators

This is the second in a series of papers developing a theory of total positivity for loop groups. In this paper, we study infinite products of Chevalley generators. We show that the combinatorics of infinite reduced words underlies the theory, and develop the formalism of infinite sequences of braid moves, called a braid limit. We relate this to a partial order, called the limit weak order, on infinite reduced words.
The limit semigroup generated by Chevalley generators has a transfinite structure. We prove a form of unique factorization for its elements, in effect reducing their study to infinite products which have the order structure of the natural numbers. For the latter infinite products, we show that one always has a factorization which matches an infinite Coxeter element.
One of the technical tools we employ is a totally positive exchange lemma which appears to be of independent interest. This result states that the exchange lemma (in the context of Coxeter groups) is compatible with total positivity in the form of certain inequalities.
Total positivity in loop groups I: whirls and curls

This is the first of a series of papers where we develop a theory of total positivity for loop groups. In this paper, we completely describe the totally nonnegative part of the polynomial loop group GL_n(\R[t,t^{-1}]), and for the formal loop group GL_n(\R((t))) we describe the totally nonnegative points which are not totally positive. Furthermore, we make the connection with networks on the cylinder.
Our approach involves the introduction of distinguished generators, called whirls and curls, and we describe the commutation relations amongst them. These matrices play the same role as the poles and zeroes of the Edrei-Thoma theorem classifying totally positive functions (corresponding to our case n=1). We give a solution to the ``factorization problem'' using limits of ratios of minors. This is in a similar spirit to the Berenstein-Fomin-Zelevinsky Chamber Ansatz where ratios of minors are used. A birational symmetric group action arising in the commutation relation of curls appeared previously in Noumi-Yamada's study of discrete Painlevé dynamical systems and Berenstein-Kazhdan's study of geometric crystals.
A non-crossing standard monomial theory

The second author has introduced non-crossing tableaux, objects whose non-nesting analogues are semi-standard Young tableaux. We relate non-crossing tableaux to Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns and develop the non-crossing analogue of standard monomial theory. Leclerc and Zelevinsky's weakly separated sets are special cases of non-crossing tableaux, and we suggest that non-crossing tableaux may help illuminate the theory of weakly separated sets.

We show that Schützenberger's promotion on two and three row rectangular Young tableaux can be realized as cyclic rotation of certain planar graphs introduced by Kuperberg. Moreover, following work of the third author, we show that this action admits the cyclic sieving phenomenon.
A_2-web immanants
We describe the rank 3 Temperley-Lieb-Martin algebras in terms of Kuperberg's A_2-webs. We define consistent labelings of webs, and use them to describe the coefficients of decompositions into irreducible webs. We introduce web immanants, inspired by Temperley-Lieb immanants of Rhoades and Skandera. We show that web immanants are positive when evaluated on totally positive matrices, and describe some further properties.

We introduce the notion of the descent set polynomial as an alternative way of encoding the sizes of descent classes of permutations. Descent set polynomials exhibit interesting factorization patterns. We explore the question of when particular cyclotomic factors divide these polynomials. As an instance we deduce that the proportion of odd entries in the descent set statistics in the symmetric group S_n only depends on the number on 1's in the binary expansion of n. We observe similar properties for the signed descent set statistics.

Motivated by work of Buch on set-valued tableaux in relation to the K-theory of the Grassmannian, we study six combinatorial Hopf algebras. These Hopf algebras can be thought of as K-theoretic analogues of the by now classical ``square'' of Hopf algebras consisting of symmetric functions, quasisymmetric functions, noncommutative symmetric functions and the Malvenuto-Reutenauer Hopf algebra of permutations. In addition, we develop a theory of set-valued P-partitions and study three new families of symmetric functions which are weight generating functions of reverse plane partitions, weak set-valued tableaux and valued-set tableaux.

We study pfaffian analogues of immanants, which we call pfaffinants. Our main object is the TL-pfaffinants which are analogues of Rhoades and Skandera's TL-immanants. We show that TL-pfaffinants are positive when applied to planar networks and explain how to decompose products of complementary pfaffians in terms of TL-pfaffinants. We conjecture in addition that TL-pfaffinants have positivity properties related to Schur Q-functions.

We show that certain differences of products of $P$-partition generating functions are positive in the basis of fundamental quasi-symmetric functions L_α. This result interpolates between recent Schur positivity and monomial positivity results of the same flavor. We study the case of chains in detail, introducing certain ``cell transfer'' operations on compositions and an interesting related ``L-positivity'' poset. We introduce and study quasi-symmetric functions called ``wave Schur functions'' and use them to establish, in the case of chains, that the difference of products we study is itself equal to a single generating function K_{P,θ} for a labeled poset (P,θ). In the course of our investigations we establish some factorization properties of the ring of quasisymmetric functions.

Let $λ$, $μ$, $ν$ and $ρ$ be dominant weights of $\mathfrak{sl_n}$ satisfying $λ+ μ= ν+ ρ$. Let $V_λ$ denote the highest weight module corresponding to $λ$. Lam, Postnikov, Pylyavskyy conjectured a sufficient condition for $V_λ \otimes V_μ$ to be contained in $V_ν \otimes V_ρ$ as $\mathfrak{sl_n}$-modules. In this note we prove a weaker version of the conjecture. Namely we prove that under the conjectured conditions every irreducible $\mathfrak{sl_n}$-module which appears in the decomposition of $V_λ \otimes V_μ$ does appear in the decomposition of $V_ν \otimes V_ρ$.

In combinatorics there is a well-known duality between non-nesting and non-crossing objects. In algebra there are many objects which are standard, for example Standard Young Tableaux, Standard Monomials, Standard Bitableaux. We adopt a point of view that these standard objects are really non-nesting, and we find their non-crossing counterparts.
