In this paper we study and compare two homology theories for (simple and undirected) graphs. The first, which was developed by Barcelo, Caprano, and White, is based on graph maps from hypercubes to the graph. The second theory was developed by Grigor'yan, Lin, Muranov, and Yau, and is based on paths in the graph. Results in both settings imply that the respective homology groups are isomorphic in homological dimension one. We show that, for several infinite classes of graphs, the two theories lead to isomorphic homology groups in all dimensions. However, we provide an example for which the homology groups of the two theories are not isomorphic at least in dimensions two and three. We establish a natural map from the cubical to the path homology groups which is an isomorphism in dimension one and surjective in dimension two. Again our example shows that in general the map is not surjective in dimension three and not injective in dimension two. In the process we develop tools to compute the homology groups for both theories in all dimensions.

Motivated by questions in algebra and combinatorics we study two ideals associated to a simple graph G:
--> the Lovasz-Saks-Schrijver ideal defining the d-dimensional orthogonal representations of the graph complementary to G and
--> the determinantal ideal of the (d+1)-minors of a generic symmetric with 0s in positions prescribed by the graph G.
In characteristic 0 these two ideals turns out to be closely related and algebraic properties such as being radical, prime or a complete intersection transfer from the Lovasz-Saks-Schrijver ideal to the determinantal ideal. For Lovasz-Saks-Schrijver ideals we link these properties to combinatorial properties of G and show that they always hold for d large enough. For specific classes of graph, such a forests, we can give a complete picture and classify the radical, prime and complete intersection Lovasz-Saks-Schrijver ideals.

In this paper we initiate the study of racks from the combined perspective of combinatorics and finite group theory. A rack R is a set with a self-distributive binary operation. We study the combinatorics of the partially ordered set {\cal R}(R) of all subracks of R with inclusion as the order relation. Groups G with the conjugation operation provide an important class of racks. For the case R = G we show that
-> the order complex of {\cal R}(R) has the homotopy type of a sphere,
-> the isomorphism type of {\cal R}(R) determines if G is abelian, nilpotent, supersolvable, solvable or simple,
-> {\cal R}(R) is graded if and only if G is abelian, G = S_3, G = D_8 or G = Q_8.
In addition, we provide some examples of subracks R of a group G for which {\cal R}(R) relates to well studied combinatorial structures. In particular, the examples show that the order complex of {\cal R}(R) for general R is more complicated than in the case R = G.

We study the partially ordered set $P(a_1,\ldots, a_n)$ of all multidegrees $(b_1,\dots,b_n)$ of monomials $x_1^{b_1}\cdots x_n^{b_n}$ which properly divide $x_1^{a_1}\cdots x_n^{a_n}$. We prove that the order complex $Δ(P(a_1,\dots,a_n))$ of $P(a_1,\ldots a_n)$ is (non-pure) shellable, by showing that the order dual of $P(a_1,\ldots,a_n)$ is $\mathrm{CL}$-shellable. Along the way, we exhibit the poset $P(4,4)$ as a new example of a poset with $\mathrm{CL}$-shellable order dual that is not $\mathrm{CL}$-shellable itself. For $n = 2$ we provide the rank of all homology groups of the order complex $Δ\left( P(a_1,a_2) \right)$. Furthermore, we give a succinct formula for the Euler characteristic of $Δ\left( P(a_1,a_2) \right)$.
On the ideal of orthogonal representations of a graph in $\mathbb{R}^2$

In this paper, we study orthogonal representations of simple graphs $G$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$ from an algebraic perspective in case $d = 2$. Orthogonal representations of graphs, introduced by Lovász, are maps from the vertex set to $\mathbb{R}^d$ where non-adjacent vertices are sent to orthogonal vectors. We exhibit algebraic properties of the ideal generated by the equations expressing this condition and deduce geometric properties of the variety of orthogonal embeddings for $d=2$ and $\mathbb{R}$ replaced by an arbitrary field. In particular, we classify when the ideal is radical and provide a reduced primary decomposition if $\sqrt{-1} \not\in K$. This leads to a description of the variety of orthogonal embeddings as a union of varieties defined by prime ideals. In particular, this applies to the motivating case $K = \mathbb{R}$.

Inspired by recent results of Ein, Lazarsfeld, Erman and Zhou on the non-vanishing of Betti numbers of high Veronese subrings, we describe the behaviour of the Betti numbers of Stanley-Reisner rings associated with iterated barycentric or edgewise subdivisions of a given simplicial complex. Our results show that for a simplicial complex $Δ$ of dimension $d-1$ and for $1\leq j\leq d-1$ the number of $0$'s the j-th linear strand of the minimal free resolution of the r-th barycentric or edgewise subdivision is bounded above only in terms of $d$ and $j$ (and independently of $r$).
The Buchberger resolution

We define the Buchberger resolution, which is a graded free resolution of a monomial ideal in a polynomial ring. Its construction uses a generalization of the Buchberger graph and encodes much of the combinatorics of the Buchberger algorithm. The Buchberger resolution is a cellular resolution that coincides with the Scarf resolution for generic monomial ideals, which is the case when it is minimal. The simplicial complex underlying the Buchberger resolution is of interest for its own sake and its combinatorics is not fully understood. We close with a conjecture on the clique complex of the Buchberger graph.
Noncrossing sets and a Graßmann associahedron

We study a natural generalization of the noncrossing relation between pairs of elements in [n] to k-tuples in [n] that was first considered by Petersen, Pylyavskyy, Speyer (2010). We give an alternative approach to their result that the flag simplicial complex on $\binom{[n]}{k}$ induced by this relation is a regular, unimodular and flag triangulation of the order polytope of the poset given by the product $[k]\times[n-k]$ of two chains (also called Gelfand-Tsetlin polytope), and that it is the join of a simplex and a sphere (that is, it is a Gorenstein triangulation). We then observe that this already implies the existence of a flag simplicial polytope generalizing the dual associahedron, whose Stanley-Reisner ideal is an initial ideal of the Graßmann-Plücker ideal, while previous constructions of such a polytope did not guarantee flagness nor reduced to the dual associahedron for k=2. On our way we provide general results about order polytopes and their triangulations. We call the simplicial complex the noncrossing complex, and the polytope derived from it the dual Graßmann associahedron. We extend results of Petersen, Pylyavskyy, Speyer (2010) showing that the non-crossing complex and the Graßmann associahedron naturally reflect the relations between Graßmannians with different parameters, in particular the isomorphism $G_{k,n} \cong G_{n-k,n}$. Moreover, our approach allows us to show that the adjacency graph of the noncrossing complex admits a natural acyclic orientation that allows us to define a Graßmann-Tamari order on maximal noncrossing families. Finally, we look at the precise relation of the noncrossing complex and the weak separability complex of Leclerc, Zelevinsky (1998) and show that the weak separability complex is the cyclically invariant part of the noncrossibg complex.
Discrete Morse theory for moment-angle complexes of pairs (D^n,S^{n-1})
For a finite simplicial complex K and a CW-pair (X,A), there is an associated CW-complex Z_K(X,A), known as a polyhedral product. We apply discrete Morse theory to a particular CW-structure on the n-sphere moment-angle complexes Z_K(D^{n}, S^{n-1}). For the class of simplicial complexes with vertex-decomposable duals, we show that the associated n-sphere moment-angle complexes have the homotopy type of wedges of spheres. As a corollary we show that a sufficiently high suspension of any restriction of a simplicial complex with vertex-decomposable dual is homotopy equivalent to a wedge of spheres.

We show that for any two proper monomial ideals I and J in the polynomial ring S = k[x_1, ..., x_n] the ring S/IJ is Golod. We also show that if I is squarefree then for large enough k the quotient S/I^{(k)} of S by the kth symbolic power of I is Golod. As an application we prove that the multiplication on the cohomology algebra of some classes of moment-angle complexes is trivial.

The lth partial barycentric subdivision is defined for a (d-1)-dimensional simplicial complex Δand studied along with its combinatorial, geometric and algebraic aspects. We analyze the behavior of the f- and h-vector under the lth partial barycentric subdivision extending previous work of Brenti and Welker on the standard barycentric subdivision -- the case l = 1. We discuss and provide properties of the transformation matrices sending the f- and h-vector of Δto the f- and h-vector of its lth partial barycentric subdivision. We conclude with open problems.

A deformation of the Orlik-Solomon algebra of a matroid M is defined as a quotient of the free associative algebra over a commutative ring R with 1. It is shown that the given generators form a Groebner basis and that after suitable homogenization the deformation and the Orlik-Solomon have the same Hilbert series as R-algebras. For supersolvable matroids, equivalently fiber type arrangements, there is a quadratic Groebner basis and hence the algebra is Koszul

Let $(a_n)_{n \geq 0}$ be a sequence of integers such that its generating series satisfies $\sum_{n \geq 0} a_nt^n = \frac{h(t)}{(1-t)^d}$ for some polynomial $h(t)$. For any $r \geq 1$ we study the coefficient sequence of the numerator polynomial $h_0(a^{<r >}) +...+ h_{λ'}(a^{<r >}) t^{λ'}$ of the $r$\textsuperscript{th} Veronese series $a^{<r >}(t) = \sum_{n \geq 0} a_{nr} t^n$. Under mild hypothesis we show that the vector of successive differences of this sequence up to the $\lfloor \frac{d}{2} \rfloor$\textsuperscript{th} entry is the $f$-vector of a simplicial complex for large $r$. In particular, the sequence satisfies the consequences of the unimodality part of the $g$-conjecture. We give applications of the main result to Hilbert series of Veronese algebras of standard graded algebras and the $f$-vectors of edgewise subdivisions of simplicial complexes.
Spectra of Symmetrized Shuffling Operators
(Abridged abstract) For a finite real reflection group W and a W-orbit O of flats in its reflection arrangement---or equivalently a conjugacy class of its parabolic subgroups---we introduce a statistic on elements of W. We then study the operator of right-multiplication within the group algebra of W by the element whose coefficients are given by this statistic.
We reinterpret the operators geometrically in terms of the arrangement of reflecting hyperplanes for W. We show that they are self-adjoint and positive semidefinite. via two explicit factorizations into a symmetrized form A^t A. In one such factorization, A is a generalization of the projection of a simplex onto the linear ordering polytope. In the other factorization, A is the transition matrix for one of the well-studied Bidigare-Hanlon-Rockmore random walks on the chambers of an arrangement.
We study the family of operators in which O is the conjugacy classes of Young subgroups of type (k,1^{n-k}). A special case within this family is the operator corresponding to random-to-random shuffling. We show in a purely enumerative fashion that these operators pairwise commute. We furthermore conjecture that they have integer spectrum, generalizing a conjecture of Uyemura-Reyes for the case k=n-1.
We use representation theory to show that if O is a conjugacy class of rank one parabolics in W, the corresponding operator has integer spectrum. Our proof makes use of an (apparently) new family of twisted Gelfand pairs for W.
We also study the family of operators in which O is the conjugacy classes of Young subgroups of type (2^k,1^{n-2k}). Here the construction of a Gelfand model for the symmetric group shows that these operators pairwise commute and that they have integer spectrum.
For the symmetric group, we conjecture that apart from the two commuting families above, no other pair of operators of this form commutes.

We extend properties of the weak order on finite Coxeter groups to Weyl groupoids admitting a finite root system. In particular, we determine the topological structure of intervals with respect to weak order, and show that the set of morphisms with fixed target object forms an ortho-complemented meet semilattice. We define the Coxeter complex of a Weyl groupoid with finite root system and show that it coincides with the triangulation of a sphere cut out by a simplicial hyperplane arrangement. As a consequence, one obtains an algebraic interpretation of many hyperplane arrangements that are not reflection arrangements.

For an ideal $I$ in a regular local ring or a graded ideal $I$ in the polynomial ring we study the limiting behavior of the Betti numbers of S/I^k as k goes to infinity. By Kodiyalam's result it is known that in each homological degree the Betti number is a polynomial for large k. We call these polynomials the Kodiyalam polynomials and encode the limiting behavior in their generating polynomial. It is shown that the limiting behavior depends only on the coefficients on the Kodiyalam polynomials in the highest possible degree. For these we exhibit lower bounds in special cases and conjecture that the bounds are valid in general. We also show that the Kodiyalam polynomials have weakly descending degrees and identify a situation where the polynomials have all highest possible degree.

A class of simplicial complexes, which we call Buchsbaum* over a field, is introduced. Buchsbaum* complexes generalize triangulations of orientable homology manifolds as well as doubly Cohen-Macaulay complexes. By definition, the Buchsbaum* property depends only on the geometric realization and the field. Characterizations in terms of simplicial and local cohomology are given. It is proved that Buchsbaum* complexes are doubly Buchsbaum. Enumerative and graph theoretic properties of Buchsbaum* complexes are investigated. It is shown that various constructions, among them one which generalizes convex ear decompositions, yield Buchsbaum* simplicial complexes.

Let $(a_n)_{n \geq 0}$ be a sequence of complex numbers such that its generating series satisfies $\sum_{n \geq 0} a_nt^n = \frac{h(t)}{(1-t)^d}$ for some polynomial $h(t)$. For any $r \geq 1$ we study the transformation of the coefficient series of $h(t)$ to that of $h^{< r >}(t)$ where $\sum_{n \geq 0} a_{nr} t^n = \frac{h^{< r >}(t)}{(1-t)^d}$. We give a precise description of this transformation and show that under some natural mild hypotheses the roots of $h^{< r >}(t)$ converge when $r$ goes to infinity. In particular, this holds if $\sum_{n \geq 0} a_n t^n$ is the Hilbert series of a standard graded $k$-algebra $A$. If in addition $A$ is Cohen-Macaulay then the coefficients of $h^{< r >}(t)$ are monotonely increasing with $r$. If $A$ is the Stanley-Reisner ring of a simplicial complex $Δ$ then this relates to the $r$th edgewise subdivision of $Δ$ which in turn allows some corollaries on the behavior of the respective $f$-vectors.

Let $S$ be a finite alphabet. An injective word over $S$ is a word over $S$ such that each letter in $S$ appears at most once in the word. We study Boolean cell complexes of injective words over $S$ and their commutation classes. This generalizes work by Farmer and by Björner and Wachs on the complex of all injective words.
On Sequentially Cohen-Macaulay Complexes and Posets
The classes of sequentially Cohen-Macaulay and sequentially homotopy Cohen-Macaulay complexes and posets are studied. First, some different versions of the definitions are discussed and the homotopy type is determined. Second, it is shown how various constructions, such as join, product and rank-selection preserve these properties. Third, a characterization of sequential Cohen-Macaulayness for posets is given. Finally, in an appendix we outline connections with ring-theory and survey some uses of sequential Cohen-Macaulayness in commutative algebra.
