Recent work of the author connected several parking function enumeration problems to enumerations of Catalan paths with respect to certain weight functions that are expressed in terms of the ascent lengths. Motivated by this, we generalise and solve analogous weighted enumeration problems for a large family of lattice paths and weight functions, and discuss their connections with other enumeration problems and OEIS entries.
In Search of a Hidden Curve
It has been noticed since around 2007 that certain enumeration problems can be solved when an analytic or algebraic curve is identified. This curve is the key to the problem. In these lectures, a few such examples are presented. One is a detailed account on counting simple Hurwitz numbers, explaining how the problem was solved by discovering this key curve. The formula for the curve allows us to write the generating functions of Hurwitz numbers in terms of polynomials. This unexpected polynomiality produces, as a byproduct, straightforward and short proofs of the Witten-Kontsevich theorem and the $λ_g$-theorem of Faber-Pandharipande. An analogous enumeration problem associated with Catalan numbers is also presented, which has a simpler feature in terms of analysis. The asymptotic behavior of counting leads this time to the Euler characteristic of the moduli spaces of smooth curves. We then discuss another enumeration problem, the Apéry sequences. The quest of identifying the hidden curve for this case remains open.
These curves, also known as spectral curves, are discovered via solving ordinary differential equations. The counting problem of geometric origin associated with the genus 0, one marked point case is encoded in the spectral curve. It is explained that going from the $(g,n)=(0,1)$-case to arbitrary $(g,n)$ is a process of quantization of the spectral curve.
This perspective of quantization is discussed in a geometric setting, when the differential equations are linear with holomorphic coefficients, in terms of Higgs bundles, opers, and Gaiotto's conformal limit construction. In this context, however, there are no counting problems behind the scene.
Ehrhart Polynomials of Order Polytopes: Interpreting Combinatorial Sequences on the OEIS
In this paper, we provide an overview of Ehrhart polynomials associated with order polytopes of finite posets, a concept first introduced by Stanley. We focus on their combinatorial interpretations for many sequences listed on the OEIS. We begin by exploring the Ehrhart series of order polytopes resulting from various poset operations, specifically the ordinal sum and direct sum. We then concentrate on the poset $P_λ$ associated with the Ferrers diagram of a partition $λ= (λ_1, λ_2, \ldots, λ_t)$. When $λ= (k, k-1, \ldots, 1)$, the Ehrhart polynomial is a shifted Hankel determinant of the well-known Catalan numbers; when $λ= (k, k, \ldots, k)$, the Ehrhart polynomial is solved by Stanley's hook content formula and is used to prove conjectures for the sequence [A140934] on the OEIS. When solving these problems, we rediscover Kreweras' determinant formula for the Ehrhart polynomial $\mathrm{ehr}(\mathcal{O}(P_λ), n)$ through the application of the Lindström-Gessel-Viennot lemma on non-intersecting lattice paths.
A half-automated study of a 2-parameter family of integrals
The study of some parametric integrals is presented with a combined approach of analytical development, the usage of a Computed Algebra System (CAS) and of the Online Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences. The methodology for the solution includes a) an analytical investigation for the study of the parametric integral, b) computations with a CAS of the integral for specific values of the parameter, c) investigation of the connection between the integral and special functions or classical numbers, and d) derivation of a general algorithm for the complete computation of the parametric integral. The central example of the paper is the parametric integral \begin{equation*} \label{the general integral} I_{n}^{(p)}=\int_0^{π/4} x^p \tan^n x\; dx, \end{equation*} The work reveals a connection of this parametric integral with Catalan numbers.

Nonnesting permutations are permutations of the multiset $\{1,1,2,2,\dots,n,n\}$ that avoid subsequences of the form $abba$ for any $a\neq b$. These permutations have recently been studied in connection to noncrossing (also called quasi-Stirling) permutations, which are those that avoid subsequences of the form $abab$, and in turn generalize the well-known Stirling permutations. Inspired by the work by Archer et al. on pattern avoidance in noncrossing permutations, we consider the analogous problem in the nonnesting case. We enumerate nonnesting permutations that avoid each set of two or more patterns of length 3, as well as those that avoid some sets of patterns of length 4. We obtain closed formulas and generating functions, some of which involve unexpected appearances of the Catalan and Fibonacci numbers. Our proofs rely on decompositions, recurrences, and bijections.
Surface sums for lattice Yang-Mills in the large-$N$ limit
We give a sum over weighted planar surfaces formula for Wilson loop expectations in the large-$N$ limit of strongly coupled lattice Yang-Mills theory, in any dimension. The weights of each surface are simple and expressed in terms of products of signed Catalan numbers.
In establishing our results, the main novelty is to convert a recursive relation for Wilson loop expectations, known as the master loop equation, into a new peeling exploration of the planar surfaces. This exploration reveals hidden cancellations within the sums, enabling a deeper understanding of the structure of the planar surfaces.
We view our results as a continuation of the program initiated in [CPS23] to understand Yang-Mills theories via surfaces and as a refinement of the string trajectories point-of-view developed in [Cha19a].
Gröbner bases, resolutions, and the Lefschetz properties for powers of a general linear form in the squarefree algebra
For the almost complete intersection ideals $(x_1^2, \dots, x_n^2, (x_1 + \cdots + x_n)^k)$, we compute their reduced Gröbner basis for any term ordering, revealing a combinatorial structure linked to lattice paths, elementary symmetric polynomials, and Catalan numbers. Using this structure, we classify the weak Lefschetz property for these ideals. Additionally, we provide a new proof of the well-known result that the squarefree algebra satisfies the strong Lefschetz property. Finally, we compute the Betti numbers of the initial ideals and construct a minimal free resolution using a Mayer-Vietoris tree approach.
On the extended Catalan arrangement of type $B_\ell$
We give an explicit formula for the generators of the logarithmic vector field of the coning of the extended Catalan arrangement of type $B_\ell$.
Remixed Eulerian numbers: beyond the connected case
In his study of generalised permutahedra, Postnikov considered the mixed volumes of hypersimplices, giving rise to the family of mixed Eulerian numbers. It comprises usual Eulerian numbers, binomial coefficients, Catalan numbers, and the large family of hit numbers. Nadeau and Tewari further gave a polynomial refinement of these, the remixed Eulerian numbers, which recover the natural $q$-analogs of these special families. Using a probabilistic model, we give several formulas for remixed Eulerian numbers for certain subfamilies, extending the known formulas for $q$-hit numbers due to Garsia and Remmel.
An integral representation of Catalan numbers using the Féaux formula
We present an integral expression of the Catalan numbers, based on Féaux' integral representation of $\log\left[Γ(x)\right]$, $Γ$ being the usual Gamma function. The obtained formula may be the starting point of the derivation of new relations involving central binomial coefficients or Catalan numbers.
Combinatorial connections in snake graphs: Tilings, lattice paths, and perfect matchings
Snake graphs and their perfect matchings play a key role in the description of cluster variables of cluster algebras associated to surfaces. In this paper, we introduce triangular snake graphs and establish a bijection between their routes (non-intersecting lattice paths), perfect matchings of their underlying snake graphs, and tilings. As an application, we show that the number of perfect matchings in straight snake graphs can be expressed in terms of determinants of Hankel matrices with Catalan number entries. Moreover, we prove that the number of perfect matchings in snake graphs can be expressed as a sum of products of Fibonacci numbers, and we show how Fibonacci and Pell sequences arise from determinants of matrices with Fibonacci entries.
Multifold Convolutions, Generating Functions and 1d Random Walks
We consider multifold convolutions of a combinatorial sequence $(a_n)_{n=0}^{\infty}$: namely, for each $k \in \N$ the $k$-fold convolution is $\mathcal{M}^{(k)}_n(\boldsymbol{a}) = \sum_{j_1+\dots+j_k=n} a_{j_1} \cdots a_{j_k}$. Let $C_n$ be the Catalan numbers, and let $B_n$ be the central binomial coefficients. Then for random Dyck paths or simple random walk bridges, the multifold convolutions give moments of returns to the origin, using the stars-and-bars problem. There are well-known explicit formulas for the multifold convolutions of $C_n$ and $B_n$. But even for combinatorial sequences $B_n^2$ and $B_n^3$, one may determine asymptotics of multifold convolutions for large $n$. We also discuss large deviations: In a second part of the paper we consider an elementary version of the circle method for calculating asymptotics using complex analysis.
Growth of recurrences with mixed multifold convolutions
Generalizing some popular sequences like Catalan's number, Schröder's number, etc, we consider the sequence $s_n$ with $s_0=1$ and for $n\ge 1$, \begin{multline*}
s_n=\sum_{x_1+\dots+x_{\ell_1}=n-1} κ_1 s_{x_1}\dots s_{x_{\ell_1}} + \dots +\sum_{x_1+\dots+x_{\ell_{t'}}=n-1} κ_{t'} s_{x_1}\dots s_{x_{\ell_{t'}}}+\\ \max_{x_1+\dots+x_{\ell_{t'+1}}=n-1} κ_{t'+1} s_{x_1}\dots s_{x_{\ell_{t'+1}}} + \dots + \max_{x_1+\dots+x_{\ell_t}=n-1} κ_t s_{x_1}\dots s_{x_{\ell_t}}, \end{multline*} where $x_i$ are nonnegative integers, $\ell_1,\dots,\ell_t$ are positive integers, and $κ_1,\dots,κ_t$ are positive reals. We show that it is possible to compute the growth rate $λ$ of $s_n$ to any precision. In particular, for every $n\ge 2$,
\[
\sqrt[n]{\frac{κ^*}{\mathcal L(n-1) s_1} s_n} \le λ\le \sqrt[n]{3^{18\log 3 + 2\log\frac{s_1\mathcal L^2}{κ^*}} n^{3\log n + 12\log 3 + \log\frac{s_1\mathcal L^2}{κ^*}} s_n},
\]where $\mathcal L=\max_i \ell_i$ and $κ^*=κ_i$ for some $i$ with $\ell_i\ge 2$, and the logarithm has the base $\frac{\mathcal L+1}{\mathcal L}$. The constants in the inequalities are not very well optimized and serve mostly as a proof of concept with the ratio of the upper bound and the lower bound converging to $1$ as $n$ goes to infinity.
A remark on s-torsion pairs and on the lattice of Dyck paths
There are three classical lattices on the Catalan numbers: the Tamari lattice, the lattice of noncrossing partitions and the lattice of Dyck paths. The first is known to be isomorphic to the lattice of torsion classes of the path algebra of an equioriented quiver of type $A$ and the second is known to be isomorphic to its lattice of wide subcategories. Inspired by the notion of s-torsion classes of Adachi, Enomoto and Tsukamoto, in this short note we interpret the lattice of Dyck paths as a lattice of subcategories.
Regions of Level $\ell$ of Catalan/Semiorder-Type Arrangements
In 1996, Stanley extended the classical Catalan arrangement and semiorder arrangement, which are called the Catalan-type arrangement $\mathcal{C}_{n,A}$ and the semiorder-type arrangement $\mathcal{C}_{n,A}^*$ in this paper. By establishing a labeled Dyck path model for the regions of $\mathcal{C}_{n,A}$ and $\mathcal{C}_{n,A}^*$, this paper explores several enumerative problems related to the number of regions of level $\ell$, denoted as $r_{\ell}(\mathcal{C}_{n,A})$ and $r_{\ell}(\mathcal{C}_{n,A}^*)$, which includes:
(1) proving a Stirling convolution relation between $r_{\ell}(\mathcal{C}_{n,A})$ and $r_{\ell}(\mathcal{C}_{n,A}^*)$, refining a result by Stanley and Postnikov;
(2) showing that the sequences$\left(r_\ell{(\mathcal{C}_{n,A})}\right)_{n\geq 0}$ and $(r_\ell {(\mathcal{C}_{n,A}^*)})_{n\geq 0}$ exhibit properties of binomial type in the sense of Rota;
(3) establishing the transformational significance of $r_{\ell}(\mathcal{C}_{n,A})$ and $r_{\ell}(\mathcal{C}_{n,A}^*)$ under Stanley's ESA framework: they can be viewed as transition matrices from binomial coefficients to their characteristic polynomials respectively.
Further, we present two applications of the theories and methods: first, we provide a hyperplane arrangement counting interpretation of the two-parameter generalization of Fuss--Catalan numbers, which is closely related to the number of regions of level $\ell$ in the $m$-Catalan arrangement. Second, using labeled Dyck paths to depict the number of regions in the $m$-Catalan arrangement, we algorithmically provide the inverse mapping of the Fu, Wang, and Zhu mapping.
Parking functions with a fixed set of lucky cars
In a parking function, a lucky car is a car that parks in its preferred parking spot and the parking outcome is the permutation encoding the order in which the cars park on the street. We give a characterization for the set of parking outcomes arising from parking functions with a fixed set of lucky cars. This characterization involves the descent bottom set of a permutation, and we use the characterization to we give a formula for the number of parking functions with a fixed set of lucky cars. Our work includes the cases where the number of cars is equal to the number of parking spots, and where there are more spots than cars. We also give product formulas for the number of weakly increasing parking functions having a fixed set of lucky cars, and when the number of cars equals the number of spots this is a product of Catalan numbers.
Set-Valued Catalan Combinatorics
Set-valued standard Young tableaux are a generalization of standard Young tableaux due to Buch (2002) with applications in algebraic geometry. The enumeration of set-valued SYT is significantly more complicated than in the ordinary case, although product formulas are known in certain special cases. In this work we study the case of two-rowed set-valued SYT with a fixed number of entries. These tableaux are a new combinatorial model for the Catalan, Narayana, and Kreweras numbers, and can be shown to be in correspondence with both 321-avoiding permutations and a certain class of bicolored Motzkin paths. We also introduce a generalization of the set-valued comajor index studied by Hopkins, Lazar, and Linusson (2023), and use this statistic to find seemingly new q-analogs of the Catalan and Narayana numbers.

A desarrangement is a permutation whose first ascent is even. Desarrangements were introduced in the 1980s by Jacques Désarménien, who proved that they are in bijection with derangements. We revisit the study of desarrangements, focusing on two themes: the refined enumeration of desarrangements with respect to permutation statistics, and pattern avoidance in desarrangements. Our main results include generating function formulas for counting desarrangements by the number of descents, peaks, valleys, double ascents, and double descents, as well as a complete enumeration of desarrangements avoiding a prescribed set of length 3 patterns. We find new interpretations of the Catalan, Fine, Jacobsthal, and Fibonacci numbers in terms of pattern-avoiding desarrangements.
A Riordan array family for some integrable lattice models
We study a family of Riordan arrays whose square symmetrizations lead to the Robbins numbers as well as numbers associated to the $20$ vertex model. We provide closed-form expressions for the elements of these arrays, and also give a canonical Catalan factorization for them. We describe a related family of Riordan arrays whose symmetrizations also lead to the same integer sequences.
Parity statistics on restricted permutations and the Catalan--Schett polynomials
Motivated by Kitaev and Zhang's recent work on non-overlapping ascents in stack-sortable permutations and Dumont's permutation interpretation of the Jacobi elliptic functions, we investigate some parity statistics on restricted permutations. Some new related bijections are constructed and two refinements of the generating function for descents over $321$-avoiding permutations due to Barnabei, Bonetti and Silimbanian are obtained. In particular, an open problem of Kitaev and Zhang about non-overlapping ascents on $321$-avoiding permutations is solved and several combinatorial interpretations for the Catalan--Schett polynomials are found. The stack-sortable permutations are at the heart of our approaches.
