Worpitzky-compatible sets and the freeness of arrangements between Shi and Catalan
Given an irreducible root system, the Worpitzky-compatible subsets are defined by a geometric property of the alcoves inside the fundamental parallelepiped of the root system. This concept is motivated and mainly understood through a lattice point counting formula concerning the characteristic and Ehrhart quasi-polynomials. In this paper, we show that the Worpitzky-compatibility has a simple combinatorial characterization in terms of roots. As a byproduct, we obtain a complete characterization by means of Worpitzky-compatibility for the freeness of the arrangements interpolating between the extended Shi and Catalan arrangements. This is a completion of the earlier result by Yoshinaga in 2010 which was done for simply-laced root systems.

Hankel determinants of convolution powers of Catalan numbers revisited
Using a slightly generalized result of George Andrews and Jet Wimp this note gives a simple computational proof of some Hankel determinants of backwards shifts of convolution powers of Catalan numbers and obtains analogous results for Narayana polynomials.

Lattice Points and Rational $q$-Catalan Numbers
For each pair of coprime integers $a$ and $b$ we have a rational $q$-Catalan number $\operatorname{Cat}(a,b)_q=\binom{a+b}{a}_q/[a+b]_q$. It is known that this is a polynomial in $q$ with nonnegative integer coefficients, but the nature of these coefficients is still mysterious. Our current understanding is based on the rational shuffle conjecture that was conjectured by Bergeron, Garsia, Leven and Xin in 2014 and proved by Mellit in 2016, based on earlier work with Carlsson. This theorem realizes $\operatorname{Cat}(a,b)_q$ as the generating function for the statistic "area $-\ \mathrm{dinv}+\frac{(a-1)(b-1)}{2}$" defined on rational Dyck paths. However, this statistic is difficult to work with and leaves some phenomena unexplained. For example, it does not prove the conjecture that the difference $\operatorname{Cat}(a,c)_q-\operatorname{Cat}(a,b)_q$ has nonnegative coefficients whenever $\gcd(a,b)=\gcd(a,c)=1$ and $b<c$. The current paper proposes to look at lattice points instead of Dyck paths. Our idea is to fix $a$ and express everything in terms of the weight lattice $\mathrm{L}$ and root lattice $\mathrm{R}$ of type $A_{a-1}$. Based on ideas of Paul Johnson, we conjecture the existence of certain "Johnson statistics" $J:\mathrm{R}\to\mathbb{Z}$ and we prove this conjecture for $a\le 20$. We show that these statistics satisfy many remarkable properties including a $q$-analogue of Brion's theorem for simplices.

Chebyshev polynomials, their remarkable properties and connection with Catalan numbers
The main result of the article says that the formal power series equal to the ratio of two neighboring Chebyshev polynomials, after some renormalization, approximates the generating function of the Catalan numbers. We present a proof of this result using continued fractions. Also, for completeness of the presentation, we recall the basic properties of Chebyshev polynomials and formal power series that we use.
On the Lucky and Displacement Statistics of Stirling Permutations
Stirling permutations are parking functions, and we investigate two parking function statistics in the context of these objects: lucky cars and displacement. Among our results, we consider two extreme cases: extremely lucky Stirling permutations (those with maximally many lucky cars) and extremely unlucky Stirling permutations (those with exactly one lucky car). We show that the number of extremely lucky Stirling permutations of order $n$ is the Catalan number $C_n$, and the number of extremely unlucky Stirling permutations is $(n-1)!$. We also give some results for luck that lies between these two extremes. Further, we establish that the displacement of any Stirling permutation of order $n$ is $n^2$, and we prove several results about displacement composition vectors. We conclude with directions for further study.
On q-series and the moment problem associated to local factors
We investigate the moment problem and Jacobi matrix associated -- by the operator theoretic framework of the semilocal trace formula -- to each finite set $S$ of places of $\mathbb Q$ containing the archimedean place. The measure is given by the absolute value squared of the product over $S$ of local factors restricted to the critical line. We treat the case $S=\{p,\infty\}$, where a single prime $p$ is adjoined to the archimedean place. We find that all the key ingredients such as the moments, the orthogonal polynomials and the Jacobi matrices can be expressed as power series in terms of the parameter $q:=1/p$. We show that the series which appear for the moments themselves are Lambert series. The study of the $q$-series for the coefficients of the Jacobi matrix, and for the associated orthogonal polynomials reveals an intriguing integrality result: all those coefficients belong to the ring $\mathbb Z[\frac{1}{\sqrt{2}}]$ obtained by adjoining $1 / \sqrt{2}$ to the ring of integers. The main result of this paper is the conceptual explanation of this integrality property using Catalan numbers.

The Catalan's triangle system, the Catalan's trapezoids and (q,2)--Fock space
We provide an explicit formulation for the solution to the Catalan's triangle system using Catalan's trapezoids and a specified boundary condition. Additionally, we study this system with various boundary conditions obtained by utilizing different types of Fock spaces.

Hankel Determinants of convoluted Catalan numbers and nonintersecting lattice paths: A bijective proof of Cigler's Conjecture
In recent preprints, Cigler considered certain Hankel determinants of convoluted Catalan numbers and conjectured identities for these determinants. In this note, we shall give a bijective proof of Cigler's Conjecture by interpreting determinants as generating functions of nonintersecting lattice paths: this proof employs the reflection principle, the Lindström-Gessel-Viennot-method and a certain construction involving reflections and overlays of nonintersecting lattice paths. Shortly after this bijective proof was presented here, Cigler provided a shorter proof based on earlier results.

Weighted Catalan convolution and $(q,2)$-Fock space
Motivated by the study of certain combinatorial properties of $(q,2)$-Fock space, we compute explicitly a sequence driven by the Catalan's convolution and parameterized by $1+q$. As an application of this explicit form, we calculate the number of pair partitions involved in the determination of the vacuum--moments of the field operator defined on the $(q,2)$-Fock space.

Uniform Recurrence in the Motzkin Numbers and Related Sequences mod $p$
Many famous integer sequences including the Catalan numbers and the Motzkin numbers can be expressed in the form $ConstantTermOf\left[P(x)^nQ(x)\right]$ for Laurent polynomials $Q$, and symmetric Laurent trinomials $P$. In this paper we characterize the primes for which sequences of this form are uniformly recurrent modulo $p$. For all other primes, we show that $0$ has density $1$. This will be accomplished by showing that the study of these sequences mod $p$ can be reduced to the study of the generalized central trinomial coefficients, which are well-behaved mod $p$.

Pattern-restricted permutations of small order
We enumerate 132-avoiding permutations of order 3 in terms of the Catalan and Motzkin generating functions, answering a question of Bóna and Smith from 2019. We also enumerate 231-avoiding permutations that are composed only of 3-cycles, 2-cycles, and fixed points.
Generalized tableaux over arbitrary digraphs and their associated differential equations
We revisit the concepts of acyclic orderings and number of acyclic orderings of acyclic digraphs in terms of dispositions and counters for arbitrary multidigraphs. We prove that when we add a sequence of nested directed paths to a directed graph there is a unique polynomial such that the generatrix function of the family of counters is the product of the polynomial and the exponential function. We give an application, by considering a kind of digraphs arranged in rows introduced by the authors in a previous paper, called dispositional digraphs, in the particular case in which the digraph has two rows, to obtain new families of linear differential equations of small order whose coefficients are polynomials of small degree which admit polynomial solutions. In particular, we obtain a new differential equation associated to Catalan numbers, and the corresponding associated polynomials, which are solution of this differential equation; we term them Catalan differencial equation and Catalan polynomials, respectively. We prove that the Catalan polynomials obtained when we connect the directed path to the second vertex of the lower row of the digraph are orthogonal polynomials for an appropriate weight function. We characterize the digraphs that maximize the counter of connected dispositional digraphs and we find a new differential equation associated to these digraphs. We introduce also dispositions and counters in any multidigraph with non-strict inequalities in the dispositions, and we find new differential equations associated to some of them.

Two Formulas for the Number of Lines on Complex Projective Hypersurfaces
Two formulas for the classical number $C_n$ of lines on a generic hypersurface of degree $2n-3$ in $\mathbb{CP}^n$ are obtained which differ from the formulas by Dominici, Harris, Libgober, and van der Waerden-Zagier. We review the splitting principle computation by Harris obtaining a similar general closed-form formula in terms of the Catalan numbers and elementary symmetric polynomials. This in turn yields $C_n$ as a linear difference recursion relation of unbounded order. Thus, for the sequence of certain linear combinations of $C_n$, a simple generating function is found. Then, a result from random algebraic geometry by Basu, Lerario, Lundberg, and Peterson, that expresses these classical enumerative invariants as proportional to the Bombieri norm of particular polynomial determinants, yields another combinatorial expansion in terms of certain set compositions and block labeling counting. As an example, we compute this combinatorial interpretation for the cases of 27 lines on a cubic surface and 2875 lines on a quintic threefold. As an application, we reobtain the parity and asymptotic upper bound of the sequence. In an appendix, we generalize the splitting principle calculation to obtain a formula for the number of lines on a generic complete intersection.

Explicit expressions for the gamma vector leading to connections to upper/lower bounds and structural properties
We find an explicit formula for the gamma vector in terms of the input polynomial in a way that extends it to arbitrary polynomials. More specifically, we find explicit linear combination in terms of coefficients of the input polynomial (using Catalan numbers and binomial coefficients) and an expression involving the derivative of the input polynomial. The first expression suggests connections to common Coxeter group/noncrossing partition structures in existing gamma positivity examples. In the case where the input is the $h$-polynomial of a simplicial complex, this gives an interpretation of the gamma vector as a measure of differences in local and global contributions. We also apply them to connect signs/inequalities of (shifts of) the gamma vector to upper/lower bound conditions on coefficients of the input polynomial. Finally, we make use of the shape of the sums used to make these estimates and connections with intersection numbers to relate these properties of the gamma vector to algebraic structures (e.g. characteristic classes involved in existing log concavity and Schur positivity properties).

Cyclic sieving on noncrossing (1,2)-configurations
Published • View PublicationBIB
Verifying a suspicion of Propp and Reiner concerning the cyclic sieving phenomenon (CSP), M. Thiel introduced a Catalan object called noncrossing $(1,2)$-configurations (denoted by $X_n$), which is a class of set partitions of $[n-1]$. More precisely, Thiel proved that, with a natural action of the cyclic group $C_{n-1}$ on $X_n$, the triple $\left(X_n,C_{n-1},\text{Cat}_n(q)\right)$ exhibits the CSP, where $\text{Cat}_n(q):=\frac{1}{[n+1]_q}\begin{bmatrix} 2n\\ n \end{bmatrix}_q$ is MacMahon's $q$-Catalan number. Recently, in a study of the fermionic diagonal coinvariant ring $FDR_n$, J. Kim found a combinatorial basis for $FDR_n$ indexed by $X_n$. In this paper, we continue to study $X_n$ and obtain the following results: (1) We define a statistic $cwt$ on $X_n$ whose generating function is $\text{Cat}_n(q)$, which answers a problem of Thiel. (2) We show that $\text{Cat}_n(q)$ is equivalent to $$\sum_{\substack{k,x,y\\2k+x+y=n-1}}\begin{bmatrix} n-1 2k,x,y \end{bmatrix}_q\text{Cat}_k (q)q^{k+\binom{x}{2}+\binom{y}{2}+\binom{n}{2}}$$ modulo $q^{n-1}-1$, which answers a problem of Kim. As mentioned by Kim, this result leads to a representation theoretic proof of the above cyclic sieving result of Thiel. (3) We consider the dihedral sieving, a generalization of the CSP, which was recently introduced by Rao and Suk. Under a natural action of the dihedral group $I_2(n-1)$ (for even $n$), we prove a dihedral sieving result on $X_n$.

Prefixes of Stanley's Catalan paths with odd returns to the $x$-axis -- standard version and skew Catalan-Stanley paths
Stanley considered Dyck paths where each maximal run of down-steps to the $x$-axis has odd length; they are also enumerated by (shifted) Catalan numbers. Prefixes of these combinatorial objects are enumerated using the kernel method. A more challenging version of skew Dyck paths combined with Stanley's restriction is also considered.

$n\text{-}Lie_d$ Operad and its Koszul Dual
We study the operad $n\text{-}Lie_d$, whose algebras are graded $n$-Lie algebras with degree $d$ $n$-arity operations, which were introduced in Nambu mechanics and later studied in the algebraic setting with Filippov. We compute the Koszul dual of $n\text{-}Lie_d$, called $n\text{-}Com_{-d+n-2}$, whose relations are derived from the Specht module $S^{(n,n-1)}$ for a partition $(n,n-1)$ of $2n-1$. The intrinsic connection between these two operads come from the eigenvalues of the sequence of graphs $\{\mathcal{O}_n\}_{n\geq 0}$, called the Odd graphs, whose spectrum is related to the lower triangular sequence $\{\mathcal{E}_{r,n}\}$, called the Catalan triangle.

Simple Generating Functions for Certain Young Tableaux with Periodic Walls
Recently, Banderier et. al. considered Young tableaux with walls, which are similar to standard Young tableaux, except that local decreases are allowed at some walls. We count the numbers $\overline{f}_m(n)$ of Young tableaux of shape $2\times mn$ with walls, that allow local decreases at the $(jm+i)$-th columns for all $j=0,\dots, n-1$ and $i=2,\dots, m$. We find that they have nice generating functions (thanks to the OEIS) as follows. $$\overline{F}_m(x)=\sum_{n\geq 0}\overline{f}_m(n)x^n=\prod_{k=1}^{m}C(e^{k\frac{2πi}{m}} x^\frac{1}{m})=\exp \left(\sum_{n\geq 1}\binom{2mn-1}{mn-1}\frac{x^n}{n}\right),$$ where $C(x)=\frac{1-\sqrt{1-4x}}{2x}$ is the well-known Catalan generating function. We prove generalizations of this result. Firstly, we use the Yamanouchi word to transform Young tableaux with horizontal walls into lattice paths. This results in a determinant formula. Then by lattice path counting theory, we obtain the generating functions $F_r(x)$ for the number of lattice paths from $(0,0)$ to $(\ell n-r,kn)$ that never go above the path $(N^kE^{\ell})^{n-1}N^kE^{\ell-r}$, where $N,E$ stand for north and east steps, respectively. We also obtain exponential formulas for $F_1(x)$ and $F_\ell(x)$. The formula for $\overline{F}_m(x)$ is thus proved since it is just $F_1(x)$ specializes at $k=\ell=m$.
The Combinatorics of Motzkin Polyominoes
A word $w=w_1\cdots w_n$ over the set of positive integers is a Motzkin word whenever $w_1=\texttt{1}$, $1\leq w_k\leq w_{k-1}+1$, and $w_{k-1}\neq w_{k}$ for $k=2, \dots, n$. It can be associated to a $n$-column Motzkin polyomino whose $i$-th column contains $w_i$ cells, and all columns are bottom-justified. We reveal bijective connections between Motzkin paths, restricted Catalan words, primitive Łukasiewicz paths, and Motzkin polyominoes. Using the aforementioned bijections together with classical one-to-one correspondence with Dyck paths avoiding $UDU$s, we provide generating functions with respect to the length, area, semiperimeter, value of the last symbol, and number of interior points of Motzkin polyominoes. We give asymptotics and closed-form expressions for the total area, total semiperimeter, sum of the last symbol values, and total number of interior points over all Motzkin polyominoes of a given length. We also present and prove an engaging trinomial relation concerning the number of cells lying at different levels and first terms of the expanded $(1+x+x^2)^n$.

Combinatorial sums, series and integrals involving odd harmonic numbers
We present several types of ordinary generating functions involving central binomial coefficients, harmonic numbers, and odd harmonic numbers. Our results complement those of Boyadzhiev from 2012 and Chen from 2016. Based on these generating functions we evaluate several infinite series in closed form. In addition, we offer some combinatorial sum identities involving Catalan numbers, harmonic numbers and odd harmonic numbers. Finally, we analyze a special log-integral with Fibonacci numbers and odd harmonic numbers.
