Shellability of the quotient order on lattice path matroids
The concept of a matroid quotient has connections to fundamental questions in the geometry of flag varieties. In previous work, Benedetti and Knauer characterized quotients in the class of lattice path matroids (LPMs) in terms of a simple combinatorial condition. As a consequence, they showed that the quotient order on LPMs yields a graded poset whose rank polynomial relates to a refinement of the Catalan numbers. In this work we show that this poset admits an EL-labeling, implying that the order complex is shellable and hence enjoys several combinatorial and topological properties. We use this to establish bounds on the Möbius function of the poset, interpreting falling chains in the EL-labeling in terms of properties of underlying permutations. Furthermore, we show that this EL-labeling is in fact a Whitney labeling, in the sense of the recent notion introduced by González D'León and Hallam.
Enumeration on polyominoes determined by Catalan words avoiding $(\geq,\geq)$
A Catalan word of length $n$ that avoids the pattern $(\geq, \geq)$ is a sequence $w=w_1\cdots w_n$ with $w_1=0$ and $0\leq w_i\leq w_{i-1}+1$ for all $i$, while ensuring that no subsequence satisfies $w_i \geq w_{i+1}\geq w_{i+2}$ for $i=2,\ldots,n$. These words are enumerated by the $n$-th Motzkin number. From such a word, we associate a $n$-column Motzkin polyomino (called a $(\geq,\geq)$-polyomino), where the $i$-th column contains $w_i+1$ bottom-aligned cells. In this paper, we derive generating functions for $(\geq,\geq)$-polyominoes based on their length, area, semiperimeter, last symbol value, and number of interior points. We provide asymptotic analyses and closed-form expressions for the total area, total semiperimeter, sum of the last symbol values, and total number of interior points across all $(\geq,\geq)$-polyominoes of a given length. Finally, we express all these results as linear combinations of trinomial coefficients.
Signatures of Type $A$ Root Systems
Given a type $A$ root system $Φ$ of rank $n$, we introduce the concept of a signature for each subset $S$ of $Φ$ consisting of $n+1$ positive roots. For a subset $S$ represented by a tuple $(β_1, \ldots, β_{n+1})$, the signature of $S$ is defined as an unordered pair $\{a, b\}$, where $a$ and $b$ denote the numbers of $1$s and $-1$s, respectively, among the cofactors $(-1)^k \det(S \setminus \{β_k\})$ for $1 \le k \le n+1$. We prove that the number of tuples with a given signature can be expressed in terms of classical Eulerian numbers. The study of these signatures is motivated by their connections to the arithmetic and combinatorial properties of cones over deformed arrangements defined by $Φ$, including the Shi, Catalan, Linial, and Ish arrangements. We apply our main result to compute two important invariants of these arrangements: The minimum period of the characteristic quasi-polynomial, and the evaluation of the classical and arithmetic Tutte polynomials at $(1, 1)$.

A strip of square stamps can be folded in many ways such that all of the stamps are stacked in a single pile in the folded state. The stamp folding problem asks for the number of such foldings and has previously been studied extensively. We consider this problem with the additional restriction of fixing the mountain-valley assignment of each crease in the stamp pattern. We provide a closed form for counting the number of legal foldings on specific patterns of mountain-valley assignments, including a surprising appearance of the Catalan numbers. We describe results on upper and lower bounds for the number of ways to fold a given mountain-valley assignment on the strip of stamps, provide experimental evidence suggesting more general results, and include conjectures and open problems.
A Linear Representation for Constant Term Sequences mod $p^a$ with Applications to Uniform Recurrence
Many integer sequences including the Catalan numbers, Motzkin numbers, and the Apr{é}y numbers can be expressed in the form ConstantTermOf$\left[P^nQ\right]$ for Laurent polynomials $P$ and $Q$. These are often called ``constant term sequences''. In this paper, we characterize the prime powers, $p^a$, for which sequences of this form modulo $p^a$, and others built out of these sequences, are uniformly recurrent. For all other prime powers, we show that the frequency of $0$ is $1$. This is accomplished by introducing a novel linear representation of constant term sequences modulo $p^a$, which is of independent interest.
Symmetric statistics on rational Dyck paths
Rational Dyck paths are the rational generalization of classical Dyck paths. They play an important role in Catalan combinatorics, and have multiple applications in algebra and geometry. Two statistics over rational Dyck paths called run and ratio-run are introduced. They both have symmetric joint distributions with the return statistic. We give combinatorial proofs and algebraic proofs of the symmetries, generalizing a result of Li and Lin.
Valuative Invariants of Catalan Matroids
We decompose the indicator function of each $(a, b)$-Catalan matroid polytope as a weighted sum of indicator function of matroid polytopes that correspond to direct sums of uniform matroids. Catalan matroids lie in the interior of the convex hull of direct sums of uniform matroids in the polytope of all matroids introduced by Ferroni and Fink. Moreover, we describe combinatorially the coefficients of the convex combination of direct sums of uniform matroid corresponding to an $(a,b)$-Catalan matroid. In particular, this allows us to derive explicit formulas for arbitrary valuative invariants of $(a, b)$-Catalan matroids. Among other applications, we prove that $(a,b)$-Catalan matroids are Ehrhart positive, and we find formulas for the Kazhdan--Lusztig invariants of these matroids.
Hankel Determinants for Convolution of Power Series: An Extension of Cigler's Results
Cigler considered certain shifted Hankel determinants of convolution powers of Catalan numbers and conjectured identities for these determinants. Recently, Fulmek gave a bijective proof of Cigler's conjecture. Cigler then provided a computational proof. We extend Cigler's determinant identities to the convolution of general power series $F(x)$, where $F(x)$ satisfies a certain type of quadratic equation. As an application, we present the Hankel determinant identities of convolution powers of Motzkin numbers.
Arithmetic properties of generalized Delannoy polynomials and Schröder polynomials
Let $n$ be any nonnegative integer and \[ D_n^{(h)}(x)=\sum_{k=0}^{n}\binom{n+k}{2k}^{h}\binom{2k}{k}^{h}{x}^{k} \text{ and } S_{n}^{(h)}(x)=\sum_{k=0}^{n}\binom{n+k}{2k}^{h}C_{k}^{h}{x}^{k} \] be the generalized Delannoy polynomials and Schröder polynomials respectively. Here $C_k$ is the Catalan number and $h$ is a positive integer. In this paper, we prove that $$\begin{align*} & \frac{(2,n)}{n(n+1)(n+2)} \sum_{k=1}^{n}k^a(k+1)^a(2k+1)D_{k}^{(h)}(x)^{m}\in\mathbb{Z}[x],\\ &\frac{(2,hm-1,n)}{n(n+1)(n+2)} \sum_{k=1}^{n}(-1)^{k}k^a(k+1)^a(2k+1)D_{k}^{(h)}(x)^{m}\in\mathbb{Z}[x],\\ &\frac{(2,n)}{n(n+1)(n+2)} \sum_{k=1}^{n}k^a(k+1)^a(2k+1)S_{k}^{(h)}(x)^{m}\in\mathbb{Z}[x],\\ &\frac{(2,m-1,n)}{n(n+1)(n+2)} \sum_{k=1}^{n}(-1)^{k}k^a(k+1)^a(2k+1)S_{k}^{(h)}(x)^{m}\in\mathbb{Z}[x]. \end{align*}$$ Taking $a=1$ will confirm some of Z.-W. Sun's conjectures.
Mixed Dimer Models for Euler and Catalan Numbers
We study the enumeration of mixed dimer covers on skew Young diagrams of ribbon shape (also called border strips or snake graphs). For the two extreme cases of straight and zigzag shapes, we show that the number of mixed dimer covers are given by the Euler and Catalan numbers. We also give q-analogs by showing that the rank generating functions of the partial orders on mixed dimer covers agree with certain q-Euler and q-Catalan numbers. These q-analogs are a consequence of an isomorphism between the partial order on mixed dimer covers and the so-called middle order on certain classes of permutations.
On a New Congruence in the Catalan Triangle
For $0\leq k \leq n$, the number $C(n,k)$ represents the number of all lattice paths in the plane from the point $(0,0)$ to the point $(n,k)$, using steps $(1,0)$ and $(0,1)$, that never rise above the main diagonal $y=x$. The Fuss-Catalan number of order three $C^{(3)}_n$ represents the number of all lattice paths in the plane from the point $(0,0)$ to the point $(2n,n)$, using steps $(1,0)$ and $(0,1)$, that do not rise above the line $y=\frac{x}{2}$. We present a new alternating convolution formula for the numbers $C(2n,k)$. By using a new class of binomial sums that we call $M$ sums, we prove that this sum is divisible by $C^{(3)}_n$ and by the central binomial coefficient $\binom{2n}{n}$. We do this by examining the numbers $T(n,j)=\frac{1}{2n+1}\binom{2n+j}{j}\binom{2n+1}{n+j+1}$, for which we present a new combinatorial interpretation, connecting them to the generalized Schröder numbers of order two.
Equivalence Classes Induced by Binary Tree Isomorphism -- Generating Functions
Working with generating functions, the combinatorics of a recurrence relation can be expressed in a way that allows for more efficient calculation of the quantity. This is true of the Catalan numbers for an ordered binary tree \cite{abboud2018subtree}. Binary tree isomorphism is an important problem in computer science. The enumeration of the number of non-isomorphic rooted binary trees is therefore well known. The paper reiterates the known results for ordered binary trees and presents previous results for the enumeration of non-isomorphic rooted binary trees. Then, new enumeration results are put forward for two-colour binary tree isomorphism parametrized by the number of nodes, the number of specific colours and the number of non-isomorphic sibling subtrees. Multi-variate generating function equations are presented that enumerate these tree structures. The generating functions with these parametrizations separate multiplicatively into simplified generating function equations.
Enumeration of consecutive patterns in flattened Catalan words
A Catalan word $w$ is said to be flattened if the subsequence of $w$ obtained by taking the first letter of each weakly increasing run is nondecreasing. Let $\mathcal{F}_n$ denote the set of flattened Catalan words of length $n$, which has cardinality $\frac{3^{n-1}+1}{2}$ for all $n \geq 1$. In this paper, we consider the distribution of several consecutive patterns on $\mathcal{F}_n$. Indeed, we find explicit formulas for the generating functions of the joint distribution on $\mathcal{F}_n$ of several trios of patterns, along with an auxiliary parameter. As special cases of these formulas, we obtain the generating function for the distribution of all consecutive patterns of length two or three. The following equivalences with regard to being identically distributed on $\mathcal{F}_n$ arise when comparing the various generating functions and may be explained bijectively: $112\approx122$ and $211\approx221\approx231$. In addition, explicit expressions are found for the total number of occurrences on $\mathcal{F}_n$ of each pattern of length two or three as well as for the number of avoiders of each pattern. These results can be obtained as special cases of our more general formulas for the generating functions, but may be explained combinatorially as well, the arguments of which are featured herein.
The Affine Tamari Lattice
Given a fixed integer $n\geq 2$, we construct two new finite lattices that we call the cyclic Tamari lattice and the affine Tamari lattice. The cyclic Tamari lattice is a sublattice and a quotient lattice of the cyclic Dyer lattice, which is the infinite lattice of translation-invariant total orders under containment of inversion sets. The affine Tamari lattice is a quotient of the Dyer lattice, which in turn is a quotient of the cyclic Dyer lattice and is isomorphic to the collection of biclosed sets of the root system of type $\widetilde{A}_{n-1}$ under inclusion. We provide numerous combinatorial and algebraic descriptions of these lattices using translation-invariant total orders, translation-invariant binary in-ordered trees, noncrossing arc diagrams, torsion classes, triangulations, and translation-invariant noncrossing partitions. The cardinalities of the cyclic and affine Tamari lattices are the Catalan numbers of types $B_n$ and $D_n$, respectively. We show that these lattices are self-dual and semidistributive, and we describe their decompositions coming from the Fundamental Theorem of Finite Semidistributive Lattices. We also show that the rowmotion operators on these lattices have well-behaved orbit structures, which we describe via the cyclic sieving phenomenon. Our new combinatorial framework allows us to prove that the lengths of maximal green sequences for the completed path algebra of the oriented $n$-cycle are precisely the integers in the interval $[2n-1,\binom{n+1}{2}]$.
Hankel continued fractions and Hankel determinants for $q$-deformed metallic numbers
Fix $n$ a positive integer. Take the $n$-th metallic number $φ_n=\frac{n+\sqrt{n^2+4}}{2}$ (e.g. $φ_1$ is the golden number) and let $Φ_n(q)$ be its $q$-deformation in the sense of S. Morier-Genoud and V. Ovsienko. This is an algebraic continued fraction which admits an expansion into a Taylor series around $q=0$, with integral coefficients. By using the notion of Hankel continued fraction introduced by the first author in 2016 we determine explicitly the first $n+2$ sequences of shifted Hankel determinants of $Φ_n$ and show that they satisfy the following properties:
1) They are periodic and consist of $-1,0,1$ only.
2) They satisfy a three-term Gale-Robinson recurrence, i.e. they form discrete integrable dynamical systems.
3) They are all completely determined by the first sequence.
This article thus validates a conjecture formulated by V. Ovsienko and the second author in a recent paper and establishes new connections between $q$-deformations of real numbers and sequences of Catalan or Motzkin numbers.
Notes on Divisibility of Catalan Numbers
We investigate the divisibility properties of σ(C_n), the sum-of-divisors function applied to Catalan numbers, in relation to other number-theoretic functions. We establish conditions under which C_n has prime factors of the form 6k-1, derive sufficient criteria for divisibility of σ(C_n), and explore asymptotic estimates for the growth of σ(C_n) using de Bruijn's theorem. These results provide new insights into the arithmetic structure of Catalan numbers.
Convolution numbers: the cyclic case
Convolution sums are introduced and special instances of the cyclic convolution on finite sets is examined in more detail. The distributions that emerge are multidimensional generalizations of the Catalan and Narayana numbers. This work yields a closed form solution for 1-dimensional marginals and certain bivariate marginals in the cyclic prime case. It is explained how a sufficiently high resolution of understanding these multidimensional distributions yields an approach to attack the Hadamard matrix conjecture.
Domino Tilings, Domino Shuffling, and the Nabla Operator
We study domino tilings of certain regions $R_λ$, indexed by partitions $λ$, weighted according to generalized area and dinv statistics. These statistics arise from the $q,t$-Catalan combinatorics and Macdonald polynomials. We present a formula for the generating polynomial of these domino tilings in terms of the Bergeron--Garsia nabla operator. When $λ= (n^n)$ is a square shape, domino tilings of $R_λ$ are equivalent to those of the Aztec diamond of order $n$. In this case, we give a new product formula for the resulting polynomials by domino shuffling and its connection with alternating sign matrices. In particular, we obtain a combinatorial proof of the joint symmetry of the generalized area and dinv statistics.
A study of a recursive sequence of polynomials revealing weighted Catalan Numbers
This paper examines the recursive sequence of polynomials $p_n(x)$, defined by $p_0(x) = x^2 - 2$ and $p_n(x) = p_{n-1}(x)^2 - 2$ for $n \geq 1$. It describes the field-theoretic motivations behind this sequence, derives a recursive formula for its coefficients, and identifies invariants that uncover combinatorial connections, including links to weighted Catalan numbers.

We initiate a systematic study of pattern avoidance in rectangulations. We give a formal definition of such patterns and investigate rectangulations that avoid $\top$-like patterns - the pattern $\top$ and its rotations. For every $L \subseteq \{\top, \, \vdash, \, \bot, \, \dashv \}$ we enumerate $L$-avoiding rectangulations, both weak and strong. In particular, we show $\top$-avoiding weak rectangulations are enumerated by Catalan numbers and construct bijections to several Catalan structures. Then, we prove that $\top$-avoiding strong rectangulations are in bijection with several classes of inversion sequences, among them $I(010,101,120,201)$ and $I(011,201)$ - which leads to a solution of the conjecture that these classes are Wilf-equivalent. Finally, we show that $\{\top, \bot\}$-avoiding strong rectangulations are in bijection with recently introduced rushed Dyck paths.
