Polysymmetric functions and motivic measures of configuration spaces
We introduce a generalization of symmetric functions and apply the resulting theory to compute the class in the Grothendieck ring of varieties of the space of geometrically irreducible hypersurfaces of a fixed degree in projective space.

A decoration of a hyperbolic surface of finite type is a choice of circle, horocycle or hypercycle about each cone-point, cusp or flare of the surface, respectively. In this article we show that a decoration induces a unique canonical tessellation and dual decomposition of the underlying surface. They are analogues of the weighted Delaunay tessellation and Voronoi decomposition in the Euclidean plane. We develop a characterisation in terms of the hyperbolic geometric equivalents of Delaunay's empty-discs and Laguerre's tangent-distance, also known as power-distance. Furthermore, the relation between the tessellations and convex hulls in Minkowski space is presented, generalising the Epstein-Penner convex hull construction. This relation allows us to extend Weeks' flip algorithm to the case of decorated finite type hyperbolic surfaces. Finally, we give a simple description of the configuration space of decorations and show that any fixed hyperbolic surface only admits a finite number of combinatorially different canonical tessellations.
Hardness of almost embedding simplicial complexes in $\mathbb{R}^d$, II
A map $f: K \to \mathbb{R}^d$ of a simplicial complex is an almost embedding if $f(σ) \cap f(τ) = \varnothing$ whenever $σ, τ$ are disjoint simplices of $K$. Fix integers $d,k \geqslant 2$ such that $k+2 \leqslant d \leqslant\frac{3k}2+1$. Assuming that the "preimage of a cycle is a cycle" we prove $\mathbf{NP}$-hardness of the algorithmic problem of recognition of almost embeddability of finite $k$-dimensional complexes in $\mathbb{R}^d$. Assuming that $\mathbf{P} \ne \mathbf{NP}$ (and that the "preimage of a cycle is a cycle") we prove that the embedding obstruction is incomplete for $k$-dimensional complexes in $\mathbb{R}^d$ using configuration spaces. Our proof generalizes the Skopenkov-Tancer proof of this result for $d = \frac{3k}{2} + 1$.
Simplicial chromatic polynomials as Hilbert series of Stanley--Reisner rings
We find families of simplicial complexes where the simplicial chromatic polynomials defined by Cooper--de Silva--Sazdanovic \cite{CdSS} are Hilbert series of Stanley--Reisner rings of auxiliary simplicial complexes. As a result, such generalized chromatic polynomials are determined by $h$-vectors of auxiliary simplicial complexes. In addition to generalizing related results on graphs and matroids, the simplicial complexes used allow us to consider problems that are not necessarily analogues of those considered for graphs. Some examples include supports of cyclotomic polynomials, log concavity properties of a polynomial or some translate of the polynomial, and symmetry relations between a polynomial and its reciprocal polynomial.
If the $h$-vectors involed have sufficiently large entries, the Hilbert series are Hilbert polynomials of some $k$-algebra. As a consequence of connections between $h$-vectors and simplicial chromatic polynomials, we also find simplicial complexes whose $h$-vectors are determined by addition-contraction relations of simplicial complexes analogous to deletion-contraction relations of graphs. The constructions used involve generalizations of relations Euler characteristics of configuration spaces and chromatic polynomials of graphs.
Graph coloring-related properties of (generating functions of) Hodge-Deligne polynomials
Motivated by a connection between the topology of (generalized) configuration spaces and chromatic polynomials, we show that generating functions of Hodge-Deligne polynomials of quasiprojective varieties and colorings of acyclic directed graphs with the complete graph $K_n$ as the underlying undirected graph. In order to do this, we combine an interpretation of Crew-Spirkl for plethysms involving chromatic symmetric polynomials using colorings of directed acyclic graphs to plethystic exponentials often appearing Hodge-Deligne polynomials of varieties. Applying this to a recent result of Florentino-Nozad-Zamora, we find a connection between $GL_n$-character varieties of finitely presented groups and colorings of these "complete" directed graphs by (signed) variables used in the Hodge-Deligne polynomials of the irreducible representations.
As a consequence of the constructions used, generators of Hodge-Deligne polynomials carry over to generators of the plethystic exponentials as a power series in a way that is compatible with this graph coloring interpretation and gives interesting combinatorial information that simplifies when we consider Hodge-Deligne polynomials of birationally equivalent varieties to be equivalent. Finally, we give an application of methods used to symmetries of Hodge-Deligne polynomials of varieties and their configuration spaces and their relation to chromatic symmetric polynomials.
A Type B analog of the Whitehouse representation

We give a Type $B$ analog of Whitehouse's lifts of the Eulerian representations from $S_n$ to $S_{n+1}$ by introducing a family of $B_{n}$-representations that lift to $B_{n+1}$. As in Type $A$, we interpret these representations combinatorially via a family of orthogonal idempotents in the Mantaci-Reutenauer algebra, and topologically as the graded pieces of the cohomology of a certain $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$-orbit configuration space of $\mathbb{R}^{3}$. We show that the lifted $B_{n+1}$-representations also have a configuration space interpretation, and further parallel the Type $A$ story by giving analogs of many of its notable properties, such as connections to equivariant cohomology and the Varchenko-Gelfand ring.

We give refined bounds for the regularity of FI-modules and the stable ranges of FI-modules for various forms of their stabilization studied in the representation stability literature. We show that our bounds are sharp in several cases. We apply these to get explicit stable ranges for diagonal coinvariant algebras, and improve those for ordered configuration spaces of manifolds and congruence subgroups of general linear groups.
Representations on the cohomology of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,n}$
The moduli space $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,n}$ of $n$ pointed stable curves of genus $0$ admits an action of the symmetric group $S_n$ by permuting the marked points. We provide a closed formula for the character of the $S_n$-action on the cohomology of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,n}$. This is achieved by studying wall crossings of the moduli spaces of quasimaps which provide us with a new inductive construction of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,n}$, equivariant with respect to the symmetric group action. Moreover we prove that $H^{2k}(\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,n})$ for $k\le 3$ and $H^{2k}(\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,n})\oplus H^{2k-2}(\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,n})$ for any $k$ are permutation representations. Our method works for related moduli spaces as well and we provide a closed formula for the character of the $S_n$-representation on the cohomology of the Fulton-MacPherson compactification $\mathbb{P}^1[n]$ of the configuration space of $n$ points on $\mathbb{P}^1$ and more generally on the cohomology of the moduli space $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,n}(\mathbb{P}^{m-1},1)$ of stable maps.

We present a combinatorial analysis of fiber bundles of generalized configuration spaces on connected abelian Lie groups. These bundles are akin to those of Fadell-Neuwirth for configuration spaces, and their existence is detected by a combinatorial property of an associated finite partially ordered set. This is consistent with Terao's fibration theorem connecting bundles of hyperplane arrangements to Stanley's lattice supersolvability. We obtain a combinatorially determined class of K($π$,1) toric and elliptic arrangements. Under a stronger combinatorial condition, we prove a factorization of the Poincaré polynomial when the Lie group is noncompact. In the case of toric arrangements, this provides an analogue of Falk-Randell's formula relating the Poincaré polynomial to the lower central series of the fundamental group.
Parity Property of Hexagonal Sliding Puzzles

We study the puzzle graphs of hexagonal sliding puzzles of various shapes and with various numbers of holes. The puzzle graph is a combinatorial model which captures the solvability and the complexity of sequential mechanical puzzles. Questions relating to the puzzle graph have been previously studied and resolved for the 15 Puzzle which is the most famous, and unsolvable, square sliding puzzle of all time. It is known that for square puzzles such as the 15 Puzzle, solvability depends on a parity property that splits the puzzle graph into two components. In the case of hexagonal sliding puzzles, we get more interesting parity properties that depend on the shape of the boards and on the missing tiles or holes on the board. We show that for large-enough hexagonal, triangular, or parallelogram-shaped boards with hexagonal tiles, all puzzles with three or more holes are solvable. For puzzles with two or more holes, we give a solvability criterion involving both a parity property and the placement of tiles in tight corners of the board. The puzzle graph is a discrete model for the configuration space of hard tiles (hexagons or squares) moving on different tessellation-based domains. Understanding the combinatorics of the puzzle graph could lead to understanding some aspects of the topology of these configuration spaces.

In this paper we decompose the rational homology of the ordered configuration space of $p$ open unit-diameter disks on the infinite strip of width $2$ as a direct sum of induced $S_{n}$-representations. Alpert proved that the $k^{\text{th}}$-integral homology of the ordered configuration space of $n$ open unit-diameter disks on the infinite strip of width $2$ is an FI$_{k+1}$-module by studying certain operations on homology called "high-insertion maps." The integral homology groups $H_{k}(\text{cell}(n,2))$ are free abelian, and Alpert computed a basis for $H_{k}(\text{cell}(n,2))$ as an abelian group. In this paper, we study the rational homology groups as $S_{n}$-representations. We find a new basis for $H_{k}(\text{cell}(n,2);\mathbb{Q}),$ and use this, along with results of Ramos, to give an explicit description of $H_{k}(\text{cell}(n,2);\mathbb{Q})$ as a direct sum of induced $S_{n}$-representations arising from free FI$_{*}$-modules. We use this decomposition to calculate the dimension of the rational homology of the unordered configuration space of $p$ open unit-diameter disks on the infinite strip of width $2$.

Any collection of $n$ compact convex planar sets $K_1,\dots, K_n$ defines a vector of ${n\choose 2}$ mixed areas $V(K_i,K_j)$ for $1\leq i<j\leq n$. We show that for $n\geq 4$ these numbers satisfy certain Plücker-type inequalities. Moreover, we prove that for $n=4$ these inequalities completely describe the space of all mixed area vectors $(V(K_i,K_j) : 1\leq i<j\leq 4)$. For arbitrary $n\geq 4$ we show that this space has a semialgebraic closure of full dimension. As an application, we obtain an inequality description for the smallest positive homogeneous set containing the configuration space of intersection numbers of quadruples of tropical curves.
Facet volumes of polytopes
In this paper, motivated by the work of Edelman and Strang, we show that for fixed integers $d\geq 2$ and $n\geq d+1$ the configuration space of all facet volume vectors of all $d$-polytopes in $\mathbb R^{d}$ with $n$ facets is a full dimensional cone in $\mathbb R^{n}$. In particular, for tetrahedra ($d=3$ and $n=4$) this is a cone over a regular octahedron. Our proof is based on a novel configuration space / test map scheme which uses topological methods for finding solutions of a problem, and tools of differential geometry to identify solutions with the desired properties. Furthermore, our results open a possibility for the study of realization spaces of all $d$-polytopes in $\mathbb R^{d}$ with $n$ facets by the methods of algebraic topology.

We investigate the configuration space $\mathcal{S}_{G,b,\ell}$ associated with the movement of a robotic arm of length $\ell$ on a grid over an underlying graph $G$, anchored at a vertex $b \in G$. We study an associated PIP (poset with inconsistent pairs) $\text{IP}_{G,b,\ell}$ consisting of indexed paths on $G$. This PIP acts as a combinatorial model for the robotic arm, and we use $\text{IP}_{G,b,\ell}$ to show that the space $\mathcal{S}_{G,b,\ell}$ is a CAT(0) cubical complex, generalizing work of Ardila, Bastidas, Ceballos, and Guo. This establishes that geodesics exist within the configuration space, and yields explicit algorithms for moving the robotic arm between different configurations in an optimal fashion. We also give a tight bound on the diameter of the robotic arm transition graph (the maximal number of moves necessary to change from one configuration to another) and compute this diameter for a large family of underlying graphs $G$.
Orbit configuration space of standard action and cellular methods of poset
We extend the existing idea of "cellular poset", introduce a collection of "cellular methods" for the computation of homology of intersection lattice of a complicated subspace arrangement, and for the computation of multiplicative structure induced by intersection. As an application, we give a presentation of cohomology ring of orbit configuration space of standard action by cellular methods and a spectral sequence associated with Grothendieck fibration of poset.

For each poset $P$, we construct a polytope $A(P)$ called the $P$-associahedron. Similarly to the case of graph associahedra, the faces of $A(P)$ correspond to certain nested collections of subsets of $P$. The Stasheff associahedron is a compactification of the configuration space of $n$ points on a line, and we recover $A(P)$ as an analogous compactification of the space of order-preserving maps $P\to\mathbb{R}$. Motivated by the study of totally nonnegative critical varieties in the Grassmannian, we introduce affine poset cyclohedra and realize these polytopes as compactifications of configuration spaces of $n$ points on a circle. For particular choices of (affine) posets, we obtain associahedra, cyclohedra, permutohedra, and type B permutohedra as special cases.
Homology representations of compactified configurations on graphs applied to $\mathcal{M}_{2,n}$

We obtain new calculations of the top weight rational cohomology of the moduli spaces $\mathcal{M}_{2,n}$, equivalently the rational homology of the tropical moduli spaces $Δ_{2,n}$, as a representation of $S_n$. These calculations are achieved fully for all $n\leq 10$, and partially -- for specific irreducible representations of $S_n$ -- for $n\le 22$. We also present conjectures, verified up to $n=22$, for the multiplicities of the irreducible representations $\mathrm{std}_n$ and $\mathrm{std}_n\otimes \mathrm{sgn}_n$.
We achieve our calculations via a comparison with the homology of compactified configuration spaces of graphs. These homology groups are equipped with commuting actions of a symmetric group and the outer automorphism group of a free group. In this paper, we construct an efficient free resolution for these homology representations, from which we extract calculations on irreducible representations one at a time, simplifying the calculation of these homology representations.

We give $\mathbb{Z}$-bases for the homology and cohomology of the configuration space $\operatorname{config}(n,w)$ of $n$ unit disks in an infinite strip of width $w$, first studied by Alpert, Kahle and MacPherson. We also study the way these spaces evolve both as $n$ increases (using the framework of representation stability) and as $w$ increases (using the framework of persistent homology). Finally, we include some results about the cup product in the cohomology and about the configuration space of unordered disks.
Planarity in Generalized Scattering Amplitudes: PK Polytope, Generalized Root Systems and Worldsheet Associahedra
In this paper we study the role of planarity in generalized scattering amplitudes, through several closely interacting structures in combinatorics, algebraic and tropical geometry.
The generalized biadjoint scalar amplitude, introduced recently by Cachazo-Early-Guevara-Mizera (CEGM), is a rational function of homogeneous degree $-(k-1)(n-k-1)$ in $\binom{n}{k}-n$ independent variables; its poles can be constructed directly from the rays of the positive tropical Grassmannian.
We introduce for each pair of integers $(k,n)$ with $2\le k\le n-2$ a system of generalized positive roots which arises as a specialization of the planar basis of kinematic invariants. We prove that the higher root polytope $\mathcal{R}^{(k)}_{n-k}$ has volume the k-dimensional Catalan number $C^{(k)}_{n-k}$, via a flag unimodular triangulation into simplices, in bijection with noncrossing collections of $k$-element subsets. We also give a bijection between certain positroidal subdivisions, called tripods, of the hypersimplex $Δ_{3,n}$ and noncrossing pairs of 3-element subsets that are not weakly separated.
We show that the facets of the Planar Kinematics (PK) polytope, introduced recently by Cachazo and the author, are exactly the $\binom{n}{k}-n$ generalized positive roots. We show that the PK specialization of the generalized biadjoint amplitude evaluates to $C^{(k)}_{n-k}$.
Looking forward, we give defining equations and conjecture explicit solutions using $(\mathbb{CP}^{n-k-1})^{\times (k-1)}$ via a notion of compatibility degree for noncrossing collections, for a two parameter family of generalized worldsheet associahedra $\mathcal{W}^+_{k,n}$. These specialize when $k=2$ to a certain dihedrally invariant partial compactification of the configuration space $M_{0,n}$ of $n$ distinct points in $\mathbb{CP}^{1}$. Many detailed examples are given throughout to motivate future work.
