Envy-free division via configuration spaces
Published • View PublicationBIB
The classical approach to envy-free division and equilibrium problems relies on Knaster-Kuratowski-Mazurkiewicz theorem, Sperner's lemma or some extension involving mapping degree. We propose a different and relatively novel approach where the emphasis is on configuration spaces and equivariant topology. We illustrate the method by proving several relatives (extensions) of the classical envy-free division theorem of David Gale, where the emphasis is on preferences allowing the players to choose degenerate pieces of the cake.

A Greedy Chip-firing Game
Published in Random Structures Algorithms 62(3):645-666 (2023) • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a deterministic analogue of Markov chains that we call the hunger game. Like rotor-routing, the hunger game deterministically mimics the behavior of both recurrent Markov chains and absorbing Markov chains. In the case of recurrent Markov chains with finitely many states, hunger game simulation concentrates around the stationary distribution with discrepancy falling off like $N^{-1}$, where $N$ is the number of simulation steps; in the case of absorbing Markov chains with finitely many states, hunger game simulation also exhibits concentration for hitting measures and expected hitting times with discrepancy falling off like $N^{-1}$ rather than $N^{-1/2}$. When transition probabilities in a finite Markov chain are rational, the game is eventually periodic; the period seems to be the same for all initial configurations and the basin of attraction appears to tile the configuration space (the set of hunger vectors) by translation, but we have not proved this.

A tree expansion formula of a homology intersection numbers on the configuration space $\mathcal{M}_{0,n}$
Published • View PublicationBIB
In \cite{M}, Sebastian Mizera discovered a tree expansion formula of a homology intersection number on the configuration space $\mathcal{M}_{0,n}$. The formula originates in a study of Kawai-Lewellen-Tye relation in string theory. In this paper, we give an elementary proof of the formula. The basic ingredients are the combinatorics of the real moduli space $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,n}(\R)$ and a combinatorial identity related to the face number of the associahedron.
Homology of configuration spaces of hard squares in a rectangle
Published in Algebr. Geom. Topol. 23 (2023) 2593-2626 • View PublicationBIB
We study ordered configuration spaces $C(n;p,q)$ of $n$ hard squares in a $p \times q$ rectangle, a generalization of the well-known "15 Puzzle". Our main interest is in the topology of these spaces. Our first result is to describe a cubical cell complex and prove that is homotopy equivalent to the configuration space. We then focus on determining for which $n$, $j$, $p$, and $q$ the homology group $H_j [ C(n;p,q) ]$ is nontrivial. We prove three homology-vanishing theorems, based on discrete Morse theory on the cell complex. Then we describe several explicit families of nontrivial cycles, and a method for interpolating between parameters to fill in most of the picture for "large-scale" nontrivial homology.

Sparse reconstruction in spin systems I: iid spins
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a sequence of Boolean functions $f_n : \{-1,1\}^{V_n} \longrightarrow \{-1,1\}$, defined on increasing configuration spaces of random inputs, we say that there is sparse reconstruction if there is a sequence of subsets $U_n \subseteq V_n$ of the coordinates satisfying $|U_n| = o(|V_n|)$ such that knowing the coordinates in $U_n$ gives us a non-vanishing amount of information about the value of $f_n$. We first show that, if the underlying measure is a product measure, then no sparse reconstruction is possible for any sequence of transitive functions. We discuss the question in different frameworks, measuring information content in $L^2$ and with entropy. We also highlight some interesting connections with cooperative game theory. Beyond transitive functions, we show that the left-right crossing event for critical planar percolation on the square lattice does not admit sparse reconstruction either. Some of these results answer questions posed by Itai Benjamini.

Betti and Hodge numbers of configuration spaces of a punctured elliptic curve from its zeta functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given an elliptic curve $E$ defined over $\mathbb{C}$, let $E^{\times}$ be an open subset of $E$ obtained by removing a point. In this paper, we show that the $i$-th Betti number of the unordered configuration space $\mathrm{Conf}^{n}(E^{\times})$ of $n$ points on $E^{\times}$ appears as a coefficient of an explicit rational function in two variables. We also compute its Hodge numbers as coefficients of another explicit rational function in four variables. Our result is interesting because these rational functions resemble the generating function of the $\mathbb{F}_{q}$-point counts of $\mathrm{Conf}^{n}(E^{\times})$, which can be obtained from the zeta function of $E$ over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_{q}$. We show that the mixed Hodge structure of the $i$-th singular cohomology group $H^{i}(\mathrm{Conf}^{n}(E^{\times}))$ with complex coefficients is pure of weight $w(i)$, an explicit integer we provide in this paper. This purity statement implies our main result about the Betti numbers and the Hodge numbers. Our proof uses Totaro's spectral sequence computation that describes the weight filtration of the mixed Hodge structure on $H^{i}(\mathrm{Conf}^{n}(E^{\times}))$.

Generalized representation stability for disks in a strip and no-k-equal spaces
For fixed j and w, we study the j-th homology of the configuration space of n labeled disks of width 1 in an infinite strip of width w. As n grows, the homology groups grow exponentially in rank, suggesting a generalized representation stability as defined by Church--Ellenberg--Farb and Ramos. We prove this generalized representation stability for the strip of width 2, leaving open the case of w > 2. We also prove it for the configuration space of n labeled points in the line, of which no k are equal.

Discrete homotopy of token configurations
This paper studies graphical analogs of symmetric products and unordered configuration spaces in topology. We do so from the perspective of the discrete homotopy theory introduced by Barcelo et al. Our first result is a combinatorial version of a theorem of P. A. Smith, which says that the fundamental group of any nontrivial symmetric product of $X$ is isomorphic to $H_1(X)$. Our second result gives conditions under which the n-strand braid group of a graph is isomorphic to its discrete analog.

Optimal colored Tverberg theorems for prime powers
The type A colored Tverberg theorem of Blagojević, Matschke, and Ziegler provides optimal bounds for the colored Tverberg problem, under the condition that the number of intersecting rainbow simplices is a prime number. We extend this result to an optimal, type A colored Tverberg theorem for multisets of colored points, which is valid for each prime power $r=p^k$. One of the principal new ideas is to replace the ambient simplex $Δ^N$, used in the original Tverberg theorem, by an "abridged simplex" of smaller dimension, and to compensate for this reduction by allowing vertices to repeatedly appear a controlled number of times in different rainbow simplices. Configuration spaces, used in the proof, are combinatorial pseudomanifolds which can be represented as multiple chessboard complexes. Our main topological tool is the Eilenberg-Krasnoselskii theory of degrees of equivariant maps for non-free actions.

Cluster Configuration Spaces of Finite Type
Published in SIGMA 17 (2021), 092, 41 pages • View PublicationBIB
For each Dynkin diagram $D$, we define a ''cluster configuration space'' ${\mathcal{M}}_D$ and a partial compactification ${\widetilde {\mathcal{M}}}_D$. For $D = A_{n-3}$, we have ${\mathcal{M}}_{A_{n-3}} = {\mathcal{M}}_{0,n}$, the configuration space of $n$ points on ${\mathbb P}^1$, and the partial compactification ${\widetilde {\mathcal{M}}}_{A_{n-3}}$ was studied in this case by Brown. The space ${\widetilde {\mathcal{M}}}_D$ is a smooth affine algebraic variety with a stratification in bijection with the faces of the Chapoton-Fomin-Zelevinsky generalized associahedron. The regular functions on ${\widetilde {\mathcal{M}}}_D$ are generated by coordinates $u_γ$, in bijection with the cluster variables of type $D$, and the relations are described completely in terms of the compatibility degree function of the cluster algebra. As an application, we define and study cluster algebra analogues of tree-level open string amplitudes.

Stringy canonical forms and binary geometries from associahedra, cyclohedra and generalized permutohedra
Published • View PublicationBIB
Stringy canonical forms are a class of integrals that provide $α'$-deformations of the canonical form of any polytopes. For generalized associahedra of finite-type cluster algebra, there exist completely rigid stringy integrals, whose configuration spaces are the so-called binary geometries, and for classical types are associated with (generalized) scattering of particles and strings. In this paper we propose a large class of rigid stringy canonical forms for another class of polytopes, generalized permutohedra, which also include associahedra and cyclohedra as special cases (type $A_n$ and $B_n$ generalized associahedra). Remarkably, we find that the configuration spaces of such integrals are also binary geometries, which were suspected to exist for generalized associahedra only. For any generalized permutohedron that can be written as Minkowski sum of coordinate simplices, we show that its rigid stringy integral factorizes into products of lower integrals for massless poles at finite $α'$, and the configuration space is binary although the $u$ equations take a more general form than those "perfect" ones for cluster cases. Moreover, we provide an infinite class of examples obtained by degenerations of type $A_n$ and $B_n$ integrals, which have perfect $u$ equations as well. Our results provide yet another family of generalizations of the usual string integral and moduli space, whose physical interpretations remain to be explored.

On a curious variant of the $S_n$-module $Lie_n$
Published in Algebraic Combinatorics, Volume 3, Issue 4 (2020), pp. 985-1009 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a variant of the much-studied $Lie$ representation of the symmetric group $S_n$, which we denote by $Lie_n^{(2)}.$ Our variant gives rise to a decomposition of the regular representation as a sum of {exterior} powers of modules $Lie_n^{(2)}.$ This is in contrast to the theorems of Poincaré-Birkhoff-Witt and Thrall which decompose the regular representation into a sum of symmetrised $Lie$ modules. We show that nearly every known property of $Lie_n$ has a counterpart for the module $Lie_n^{(2)},$ suggesting connections to the cohomology of configuration spaces via the character formulas of Sundaram and Welker, to the Eulerian idempotents of Gerstenhaber and Schack, and to the Hodge decomposition of the complex of injective words arising from Hochschild homology, due to Hanlon and Hersh.

Factorization statistics and bug-eyed configuration spaces
Published in Geom. Topol. 25 (2021) 3691-3723 • View PublicationBIB
A recent theorem of Hyde proves that the factorizations statistics of a random polynomial over a finite field are governed by the action of the symmetric group on the configuration space of $n$ distinct ordered points in $\mathbb R^3$. Hyde asked whether this result could be explained geometrically. We give a geometric proof of Hyde's theorem as an instance of the Grothendieck--Lefschetz trace formula applied to an interesting, highly nonseparated algebraic space. An advantage of our method is that it generalizes uniformly to an arbitrary Weyl group. In the process we study certain non-Hausdorff models for complements of hyperplane arrangements, first introduced by Proudfoot.

The categorical graph minor theorem
We define the graph minor category and prove that the category of contravariant representations of the graph minor category over a Noetherian ring is locally Noetherian. This can be regarded as a categorification of the Robertson--Seymour graph minor theorem. In addition, we generalize Sam and Snowden's Gröbner theory of categories to the setting of pairs consisting of a category along with a functor to sets, and we apply this theory to the edge functor on the graph minor category. As an application, we study homology groups of unordered configuration spaces of graphs, improving upon various finite generation results in this subject.

A model for random braiding in graph configuration spaces

We define and study a model of winding for non-colliding particles in finite trees. We prove that the asymptotic behavior of this statistic satisfies a central limiting theorem, analogous to similar results on winding of bounded particles in the plane. We also propose certain natural open questions and conjectures, whose confirmation would provide new insights on configuration spaces of trees.

Minimal Kinematics: An All $k$ and $n$ Peek into ${\rm Trop}^+{\rm G}(k,n)$
Published in SIGMA 17 (2021), 078, 22 pages • View PublicationBIB
In this note we present a formula for the Cachazo-Early-Guevara-Mizera (CEGM) generalized biadjoint amplitudes for all $k$ and $n$ on what we call the minimal kinematics. We prove that on the minimal kinematics, the scattering equations on the configuration space of $n$ points on $\mathbb{CP}^{k-1}$ has a unique solution, and that this solution is in the image of a Veronese embedding. The minimal kinematics is an all $k$ generalization of the one recently introduced by Early for $k=2$ and uses a choice of cyclic ordering. We conjecture an explicit formula for $m_n^{(k)}(\mathbb{I},\mathbb{I})$ which we have checked analytically through $n=10$ for all $k$. The answer is a simple rational function which has only simple poles; the poles have the combinatorial structure of the circulant graph ${\rm C}_n^{(1,2,\dots, k-2)}$. Generalized biadjoint amplitudes can also be evaluated using the positive tropical Grassmannian ${\rm Tr}^+{\rm G}(k,n)$ in terms of generalized planar Feynman diagrams. We find perfect agreement between both definitions for all cases where the latter is known in the literature. In particular, this gives the first strong consistency check on the $90\,608$ planar arrays for ${\rm Tr}^+{\rm G}(4,8)$ recently computed by Cachazo, Guevara, Umbert and Zhang. We also introduce another class of special kinematics called planar-basis kinematics which generalizes the one introduced by Cachazo, He and Yuan for $k=2$ and uses the planar basis recently introduced by Early for all $k$. Based on numerical computations through $n=8$ for all $k$, we conjecture that on the planar-basis kinematics $m_n^{(k)}(\mathbb{I},\mathbb{I})$ evaluates to the multidimensional Catalan numbers, suggesting the possibility of novel combinatorial interpretations. For $k=2$ these are the standard Catalan numbers.

Positive configuration space

We define and study the totally nonnegative part of the Chow quotient of the Grassmannian, or more simply the nonnegative configuration space. This space has a natural stratification by positive Chow cells, and we show that nonnegative configuration space is homeomorphic to a polytope as a stratified space. We establish bijections between positive Chow cells and the following sets: (a) regular subdivisions of the hypersimplex into positroid polytopes, (b) the set of cones in the positive tropical Grassmannian, and (c) the set of cones in the positive Dressian. Our work is motivated by connections to super Yang-Mills scattering amplitudes, which will be discussed in a sequel.

The localization spectral sequence in the motivic setting
Published in Algebr. Geom. Topol. 24 (2024) 1431-1466 • View PublicationBIB
We construct and study a motivic lift of a spectral sequence associated to a stratified scheme, recently discovered by Petersen in the context of mixed Hodge theory and $\ell$-adic Galois representations. The original spectral sequence expresses the compactly supported cohomology of an open stratum in terms of the compactly supported cohomology of the closures of strata and the combinatorics of the poset underlying the stratification. Some of its special cases are classical tools in the study of arrangements of subvarieties and configuration spaces. Our motivic lift lives in the triangulated category of étale motives and takes the shape of a Postnikov system. We describe its connecting morphisms and study some of its functoriality properties.
Colored Tverberg problem, extensions and new results
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove a "multiple colored Tverberg theorem" and a "balanced colored Tverberg theorem", by applying different methods, tools and ideas. The proof of the first theorem uses multiple chessboard complexes (as configuration spaces) and Eilenberg-Krasnoselskii theory of degrees of equivariant maps for non-free actions. The proof of the second result relies on high connectivity of the configuration space, established by discrete Morse theory.

Cohomology ring of manifold arrangements
We study the cohomology ring of the complement $\mathcal{M}(\mathcal{A})$ of a manifold arrangement $\mathcal{A}$ in a smooth manifold $M$ without boundary. We first give the concept of monoidal cosheaf on a locally geometric poset $\mathfrak{L}$, and then define the generalized Orlik--Solomon algebra $A^*(\mathfrak{L}, \mathcal{C})$ over a commutative ring with unit, which is built by the classical Orlik--Solomon algebra and a monoidal cosheaf $\mathcal{C}$ as coefficients. Furthermore, we construct a monoidal cosheaf $\hat{\mathcal{C}}(\mathcal{A})$ associated with $\mathcal{A}$, so that the generalized Orlik--Solomon algebra $A^*(\mathfrak{L}, \hat{\mathcal{C}}(\mathcal{A}))$ becomes a double complex with suitable multiplication structure and the associated total complex $Tot(A^*(\mathfrak{L}, \hat{\mathcal{C}}(\mathcal{A})))$ is a differential algebra. Our main result is that $H^*(Tot(A^*(\mathfrak{L}, \hat{\mathcal{C}}(\mathcal{A}))))$ is isomorphic to $H^*(\mathcal{M}(\mathcal{A}))$ as algebras. Our argument is of topological with the use of a spectral sequence induced by a geometric filtration associated with $\mathcal{A}$. In particular, we also discuss the mixed Hodge complex structure on our model if $M$ and all elements in $\mathcal{A}$ are complex smooth varieties, and show that it induces the canonical mixed Hodge structure of $\mathcal{M}(\mathcal{A})$. As an application, we calculate the cohomology of chromatic configuration spaces, which agrees with many known results in some special cases. In addition, some explicit formulas with respect to Poincaré polynomial and chromatic polynomial are also given.
