Boundary Braids
Published in Algebr. Geom. Topol. 20 (2020) 3505-3560 • View PublicationBIB
The n-strand braid group can be defined as the fundamental group of the configuration space of n unlabeled points in a closed disk based at a configuration where all n points lie in the boundary of the disk. Using this definition, the subset of braids that have a representative where a specified subset of these points remain pointwise fixed forms a subgroup isomorphic to a braid group with fewer strands. In this article, we generalize this phenomenon by introducing the notion of boundary braids. A boundary braid is a braid that has a representative where some specified subset of the points remains in the boundary cycle of the disk. Although boundary braids merely form a subgroupoid rather than a subgroup, they play an interesting geometric role in the piecewise Euclidean dual braid complex defined by Tom Brady and the second author. We prove several theorems in this setting, including the fact that the subcomplex of the dual braid complex determined by a specified set of boundary braids metrically splits as the direct metric product of a Euclidean polyhedron and a dual braid complex of smaller rank.

On configuration spaces and Whitehouse's lifts of the Eulerian representations

S. Whitehouse's lifts of the Eulerian representations of $S_n$ to $S_{n+1}$ are reinterpreted, topologically and ring-theoretically, building on the first author's work on A. Ocneanu's theory of permutohedral blades.

An application of the theory of FI-algebras to graph configuration spaces
Published • View PublicationBIB
Recent work of An, Drummond-Cole, and Knudsen, as well as the author, has shown that the homology groups of configuration spaces of graphs can be equipped with the structure of a finitely generated graded module over a polynomial ring. In this work we study this module structure in certain families of graphs using the language of FI-algebras recently explored by Nagel and Römer. As an application we prove that the syzygies of the modules in these families exhibit a range of stable behaviors.

Combinatorics of orbit configuration spaces
Published • View PublicationBIB
From a group action on a space, define a variant of the configuration space by insisting that no two points inhabit the same orbit. When the action is almost free, this "orbit configuration space" is the complement of an arrangement of subvarieties inside the cartesian product, and we use this structure to study its topology. We give an abstract combinatorial description of its poset of layers (connected components of intersections from the arrangement) which turns out to be of much independent interest as a generalization of partition and Dowling lattices. The close relationship to these classical posets is then exploited to give explicit cohomological calculations.

Generalized permutohedra in the kinematic space
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this note, we study the permutohedral geometry of the poles of a certain differential form introduced in recent work of Arkani-Hamed, Bai, He and Yan. There it was observed that the poles of the form determine a family of polyhedra which have the same face lattice as that of the permutohedron. We realize that family explicitly, proving that it in fact fills out the configuration space of a particularly well-behaved family of generalized permutohedra, the zonotopal generalized permutohedra, that are obtained as the Minkowski sums of line segments parallel to the root directions $e_i-e_j$. Finally we interpret Mizera's formula for the biadjoint scalar amplitude $m(\mathbb{I}_n,\mathbb{I}_n)$, restricted to a certain dimension $n-2$ subspace of the kinematic space, as a sum over the boundary components of the standard root cone, which is the conical hull of the roots $e_1-e_2,\ldots, e_{n-2}-e_{n-1}$.

Variations on the $S_n$-module $Lie_n$
We define, for each subset $S$ of primes, an $S_n$-module $Lie_n^S$ with interesting properties. When $S=\emptyset,$ this is the well-known representation $Lie_n$ of $S_n$ afforded by the free Lie algebra. The most intriguing case is $S=\{2\},$ giving a decomposition of the regular representation as a sum of {exterior} powers of modules $Lie_n^{(2)}.$ This is in contrast to the theorems of Poincaré-Birkhoff-Witt and Thrall which decompose the regular representation into a sum of symmetrised $Lie$ modules. We show that nearly every known property of $Lie_n$ has a counterpart for the module $Lie_n^{(2)},$ suggesting connections to the cohomology of configuration spaces via the character formulas of Sundaram and Welker, to the Eulerian idempotents of Gerstenhaber and Schack, and to the Hodge decomposition of the complex of injective words arising from Hochschild homology, due to Hanlon and Hersh. For arbitrary $S,$ the symmetric and exterior powers of the module $Lie_n^S$ allow us to deduce Schur positivity for a new class of multiplicity-free sums of power sums.

Cyclic Sieving and Cluster Duality of Grassmannian
Published in SIGMA 16 (2020), 067, 41 pages • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a decorated configuration space $\mathscr{C}\!{\rm onf}_n^\times(a)$ with a potential function $\mathcal{W}$. We prove the cluster duality conjecture of Fock-Goncharov for Grassmannians, that is, the tropicalization of $\big(\mathscr{C}\!{\rm onf}_n^\times(a), \mathcal{W}\big)$ canonically parametrizes a linear basis of the homogeneous coordinate ring of the Grassmannian $\operatorname{Gr}_a(n)$ with respect to the Plücker embedding. We prove that $\big(\mathscr{C}\!{\rm onf}_n^\times(a), \mathcal{W}\big)$ is equivalent to the mirror Landau-Ginzburg model of the Grassmannian considered by Eguchi-Hori-Xiong, Marsh-Rietsch and Rietsch-Williams. As an application, we show a cyclic sieving phenomenon involving plane partitions under a sequence of piecewise-linear toggles.

The topology of arrangements of ideal type
Published • View PublicationBIB
In 1962, Fadell and Neuwirth showed that the configuration space of the braid arrangement is aspherical. Having generalized this to many real reflection groups, Brieskorn conjectured this for all finite Coxeter groups. This in turn follows from Deligne's seminal work from 1972, where he showed that the complexification of every real simplicial arrangement is a $K(π,1)$-arrangement. In this paper we study the $K(π,1)$-property for a certain class of subarrangements of Weyl arrangements, the so called arrangements of ideal type ${\mathscr A}_I$. These stem from ideals $I$ in the set of positive roots of a reduced root system. We show that the $K(π,1)$-property holds for all arrangements ${\mathscr A}_I$ if the underlying Weyl group is classical and that it extends to most of the ${\mathscr A}_I$ if the underlying Weyl group is of exceptional type. Conjecturally this holds for all ${\mathscr A}_I$. In general, the ${\mathscr A}_I$ are neither simplicial, nor is their complexification fiber type.

Families of nested graphs with compatible symmetric-group actions
Published • View PublicationBIB
For fixed positive integers $n$ and $k$, the Kneser graph $KG_{n,k}$ has vertices labeled by $k$-element subsets of $\{1,2,\dots,n\}$ and edges between disjoint sets. Keeping $k$ fixed and allowing $n$ to grow, one obtains a family of nested graphs, each of which is acted on by a symmetric group in a way which is compatible with all of the other actions. In this paper, we provide a framework for studying families of this kind using the FI-module theory of Church, Ellenberg, and Farb, and show that this theory has a variety of asymptotic consequences for such families of graphs. These consequences span a range of topics including enumeration, concerning counting occurrences of subgraphs, topology, concerning Hom-complexes and configuration spaces of the graphs, and algebra, concerning the changing behaviors in the graph spectra.

Configuration Graph Cohomology
We investigate an algebraic problem related to the determination of the fundamental group of a class of spaces of configurations on surfaces. The configuration spaces are spaces of points grouped into colors. Whether two points are allowed to collide is determined by a graph, whose vertices are the colors. In an earlier paper, the fundamental group of such graphs was described as solutions to linear Diophantine equations. In this paper, the problem of describing the set of solution is reformulated using a new type of cohomology groups of graphs. The dependence of the solution on the number of points of each color is studied. The answer is formulated in terms of graph theoretical properties.

Littlewood-Richardson coefficients via mirror symmetry for cluster varieties

I prove that the full Fock-Goncharov conjecture holds for $\mathrm{Conf}_3^\times(\widetilde{\mathcal{F}\hspace{-1.6pt}\ell})$-- the configuration space of triples of decorated flags in generic position. As a key ingredient of this proof, I exhibit a maximal green sequence for the quiver of the initial seed. I compute the Landau-Ginzburg potential $W$ on $\mathrm{Conf}_3^\times(\widetilde{\mathcal{F}\hspace{-1.6pt}\ell})^\vee$ associated to the partial minimal model $\mathrm{Conf}_3^\times(\widetilde{\mathcal{F}\hspace{-1.6pt}\ell}) \subset \mathrm{Conf}_3(\widetilde{\mathcal{F}\hspace{-1.6pt}\ell})$. The integral points of the associated "cone" ${Ξ:=\left\{W^T \geq 0\right\} \subset \mathrm{Conf}_3^\times(\widetilde{\mathcal{F}\hspace{-1.6pt}\ell})^\vee\left({\mathbb{R}^T}\right)}$ parametrize a basis for $\mathcal{O}\left(\mathrm{Conf}_3(\widetilde{\mathcal{F}\hspace{-1.6pt}\ell})\right) = \bigoplus \left(V_α\otimes V_β\otimes V_γ\right)^G$ and encode the Littlewood-Richardson coefficients $c^γ_{αβ}$. In the initial seed, the inequalities defining $Ξ$ are exactly Zelevinsky's tail positivity conditions. I exhibit a unimodular $p^*$ map that identifies $W$ with the potential of Goncharov-Shen on $\mathrm{Conf}_3^\times(\widetilde{\mathcal{F}\hspace{-1.6pt}\ell})$ and $Ξ$ with the Knutson-Tao hive cone.

Models for Configuration Space in a Simplicial Complex
Published in Colloq. Math. 155 (2019), no. 1, 127-139 • View PublicationBIB
We produce combinatorial models for configuration space in a simplicial complex, and for configurations near a single point ("local configuration space.") The model for local configuration space is built out of the poset of poset structures on a finite set. The model for global configuration space relies on a combinatorial model for a simplicial complex with a deleted subcomplex. By way of application, we study the nodal curve $y^2 z = x^3 + x^2 z$, obtaining a presentation for its two-strand braid group, a conjectural presentation for its three-strand braid group, and presentations for its two- and three-strand local braid groups near the singular point.

Growth Diagrams and Minuscule Polygon Configurations in the Affine Grassmannian
We define affine growth diagrams consisting of $GL_m$ dominant weights that label the vertices of a staircase-shaped grid. These are also called cylindrical growth diagrams as defined by Speyer and White in the case of partitions. The weights labelling each adjacent pair of vertices differ by a vertical strip and the weights around each unit square satisfy a local condition that appeared in van Leeuwen's work on the Littelmann path model for crystals. We prove two main results. For a sequence of minuscule weights $\vecλ=(λ^1,\ldots,λ^n)$ let Poly$(\vecλ)$ denote the configuration space of $n$-tuples of points $(g_1,\ldots,g_n)$ in the affine Grassmannian such that the weight-valued distances satisfy $d(g_i,g_{i+1})=λ^i$. This is the convolution variety arising in the geometric Satake correspondence. We show that for a generic point $(g_1,\ldots,g_n)$ of a component the distances $d(g_i,g_j)$ form an affine growth diagram and that this gives a bijection between components of Poly$(\vecλ)$ and affine growth diagrams of type $\vecλ$. The main tool used in the proof is the Knutson--Tao hive. In the second part, we give a purely combinatorial construction of affine growth diagrams from natural number entries by applying Greene's theorem to certain subrectangles of the staircase. From this construction it follows that affine growth diagrams contain the classical Fomin growth diagrams and realize the RS-correspondence when $\vecλ=(ω_1,\ldots,ω_1,ω_1^*,\ldots,ω_1^*)$.

Discrete configuration spaces of squares and hexagons
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider generalizations of the familiar fifteen-piece sliding puzzle on the 4 by 4 square grid. On larger grids with more pieces and more holes, asymptotically how fast can we move the puzzle into the solved state? We also give a variation with sliding hexagons. The square puzzles and the hexagon puzzles are both discrete versions of configuration spaces of disks, which are of interest in statistical mechanics and topological robotics. The combinatorial theorems and proofs in this paper suggest followup questions in both combinatorics and topology, and may turn out to be useful for proving topological statements about configuration spaces.

Unwinding the Amplituhedron in Binary
Published • View PublicationBIB
We present new, fundamentally combinatorial and topological characterizations of the amplituhedron. Upon projecting external data through the amplituhedron, the resulting configuration of points has a specified (and maximal) generalized 'winding number'. Equivalently, the amplituhedron can be fully described in binary: canonical projections of the geometry down to one dimension have a specified (and maximal) number of 'sign flips' of the projected data. The locality and unitarity of scattering amplitudes are easily derived as elementary consequences of this binary code. Minimal winding defines a natural 'dual' of the amplituhedron. This picture gives us an avatar of the amplituhedron purely in the configuration space of points in vector space (momentum-twistor space in the physics), a new interpretation of the canonical amplituhedron form, and a direct bosonic understanding of the scattering super-amplitude in planar N = 4 SYM as a differential form on the space of physical kinematical data.

Configuration spaces, $\operatorname{FS^{op}}$-modules, and Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials of braid matroids
The equivariant Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomial of a braid matroid may be interpreted as the intersection cohomology of a certain partial compactification of the configuration space of n distinct labeled points in the plane, regarded as a graded representation of the symmetric group. We show that, in fixed cohomological degree, this sequence of representations of symmetric groups naturally admits the structure of an FS-module, and that the dual FS^op-module is finitely generated. Using the work of Sam and Snowden, we give an asymptotic formula for the dimensions of these representations and obtain restrictions on which irreducible representations can appear in their decomposition.

Configuration spaces of graphs with certain permitted collisions
Published • View PublicationBIB
If $G$ is a graph with vertex set $V$, let Conf$_n^{\text{sink}}(G,V)$ be the space of $n$-tuples of points on $G$, which are only allowed to overlap on elements of $V$. We think of Conf$_n^{\text{sink}}(G,V)$ as a configuration space of points on $G$, where points are allowed to collide on vertices. In this paper, we attempt to understand these spaces from two separate, but closely related, perspectives. Using techniques of combinatorial topology we compute the fundamental groups and homology groups of Conf$_n^{\text{sink}}(G,V)$ in the case where $G$ is a tree. Next, we use techniques of asymptotic algebra to prove statements about Conf$_n^{\text{sink}}(G,V)$, for general graphs $G$, whenever $n$ is sufficiently large. It is proven that, for general graphs, the homology groups exhibit generalized representation stability in the sense of previous work of the author.

Braid group symmetries of Grassmannian cluster algebras
Published • View PublicationBIB
We define an action of the extended affine d-strand braid group on the open positroid stratum in the Grassmannian Gr(k,n), for d the greatest common divisor of k and n. The action is by quasi-automorphisms of the cluster structure on the Grassmannian, determining a homomorphism from the extended affine braid group to the cluster modular group. We also define a quasi-isomorphism between the Grassmannian Gr(k,rk) and the Fock-Goncharov configuration space of 2r-tuples of affine flags for SL(k). This identifies the cluster variables, clusters, and cluster modular groups, in these two cluster structures. Fomin and Pylyavskyy proposed a description of the cluster combinatorics for Gr(3,n) in terms of Kuperberg's basis of non-elliptic webs. As our main application, we prove many of their conjectures for Gr(3,9) and give a presentation for its cluster modular group. We establish similar results for Gr(4,8). These results rely on the fact that both of these Grassmannians have finite mutation type.
