Illumination complexes, Δ-zonotopes, and the polyhedral curtain theorem
Illumination complexes are examples of 'flat polyhedral complexes' which arise if several copies of a convex polyhedron (convex body) Q are glued together along some of their common faces (closed convex subsets of their boundaries). A particularly nice example arises if Q is a Δ-zonotope (generalized rhombic dodecahedron), known also as the dual of the difference body Δ - Δ of a simplex Δ, or the dual of the convex hull of the root system A_n. We demonstrate that the illumination complexes and their relatives can be used as 'configuration spaces', leading to new 'fair division theorems'. Among the central new results is the 'polyhedral curtain theorem' (Theorem 3) which is a relative of both the 'ham sandwich theorem' and the 'splitting necklaces theorem'.

We develop a model for the cohomology of the complement of a hypersurface arrangement inside a smooth projective complex variety. This generalizes the case of normal crossing divisors, discovered by P. Deligne in the context of the mixed Hodge theory of smooth complex varieties. Our model is a global version of the Orlik-Solomon algebra, which computes the cohomology of the complement of a union of hyperplanes in an affine space. The main tool is the complex of logarithmic forms along a hypersurface arrangement, and its weight filtration. Connections with wonderful compactifications and the configuration spaces of points on curves are also studied.
The combinatorics of Morse theory with boundary
We prove several combinatorial results on path algebras over discrete structures related to directed graphs. These results are motivated by Morse theory on a manifold with boundary and, more generally, by Floer theory on a configuration space with boundary. Their purpose is to organize cobordism relationships among moduli spaces in order to define new algebraic invariants. We discuss applications to the Morse and Fukaya categories, and to work with John Baldwin on a bordered monopole Floer theory.

We define the Coxeter cochain complex of a Coxeter group (G,S) with coefficients in a Z[G]-module A. This is closely related to the complex of simplicial cochains on the abstract simplicial complex I(S) of the commuting subsets of S. We give some representative computations of Coxeter cohomology and explain the connection between the Coxeter cohomology for groups of type A, the (singular) homology of certain configuration spaces, and the (Tor) homology of certain local Artin rings.

FI-modules were introduced by the first three authors in [CEF] to encode sequences of representations of symmetric groups. Over a field of characteristic 0, finite generation of an FI-module implies representation stability for the corresponding sequence of S_n-representations. In this paper we prove the Noetherian property for FI-modules over arbitrary Noetherian rings: any sub-FI-module of a finitely generated FI-module is finitely generated. This lets us extend many of the results of [CEF] to representations in positive characteristic, and even to integral coefficients. We focus on three major applications of the main theorem: on the integral and mod p cohomology of configuration spaces; on diagonal coinvariant algebras in positive characteristic; and on an integral version of Putman's central stability for homology of congruence subgroups.

We study the Fadell-Husseini index of the configuration space F(R^d,n) with respect to different subgroups of the symmetric group S_n. For p prime and d>0, we completely determine Index_{Z/p}(F(R^d,p);F_p) and partially describe Index{(Z/p)^k}(F(R^d,p^k);F_p). In this process we obtain results of independent interest, including:
(1) an extended equivariant Goresky-MacPherson formula,
(2) a complete description of the top homology of the partition lattice Pi_p as an F_p[Z_p]-module, and
(3) a generalized Dold theorem for elementary abelian groups.
The results on the Fadell-Husseini index yield a new proof of the Nandakumar & Ramana Rao conjecture for a prime. For n=p^k a prime power, we compute the Lusternik-Schnirelmann category cat(F(R^d,n)/S_n)=(d-1)(n-1). Moreover, we extend coincidence results related to the Borsuk-Ulam theorem, as obtained by Cohen & Connett, Cohen & Lusk, and Karasev & Volovikov.

In this paper we introduce and develop the theory of FI-modules. We apply this theory to obtain new theorems about:
- the cohomology of the configuration space of n distinct ordered points on an arbitrary (connected, oriented) manifold
- the diagonal coinvariant algebra on r sets of n variables
- the cohomology and tautological ring of the moduli space of n-pointed curves
- the space of polynomials on rank varieties of n x n matrices
- the subalgebra of the cohomology of the genus n Torelli group generated by H^1 and more.
The symmetric group S_n acts on each of these vector spaces. In most cases almost nothing is known about the characters of these representations, or even their dimensions. We prove that in each fixed degree the character is given, for n large enough, by a polynomial in the cycle-counting functions that is independent of n. In particular, the dimension is eventually a polynomial in n. In this framework, representation stability (in the sense of Church-Farb) for a sequence of S_n-representations is converted to a finite generation property for a single FI-module.
Convex Equipartitions via Equivariant Obstruction Theory
We describe a regular cell complex model for the configuration space F(\R^d,n). Based on this, we use Equivariant Obstruction Theory to prove the prime power case of the conjecture by Nandakumar and Ramana Rao that every polygon can be partitioned into n convex parts of equal area and perimeter.

In this paper we discuss several results about the structure of the configuration space of two-dimensional tensegrities with a small number of points. We briefly describe the technique of surgeries that is used to find geometric conditions for tensegrities. Further we introduce a new surgery for three-dimensional tensegrities. Within this paper we formulate additional open problems related to the stratification space of tensegrities.

The cohomology of the configuration space of n points in R^3 admits a symmetric group action and has been shown to be isomorphic to the regular representation. One way to prove this is by defining an S^1-action whose fixed point set is the complement of the braid arrangement and using equivariant cohomology to show that the cohomology of the configuration space is the associated graded algebra of the cohomology of the arrangement complement. In this paper, we will extend this result to the setting of affine subspace arrangements coming from real hyperplane arrangements using similar methods. We also provide a presentation of the equivariant cohomology ring and extend some results to the setting of oriented matroids.
On singularity confinement for the pentagram map

The pentagram map, introduced by R. Schwartz, is a birational map on the configuration space of polygons in the projective plane.
We study the singularities of the iterates of the pentagram map. We show that a "typical" singularity disappears after a finite number of iterations, a confinement phenomenon first discovered by Schwartz. We provide a method to bypass such a singular patch by directly constructing the first subsequent iterate that is well-defined on the singular locus under consideration. The key ingredient of this construction is the notion of a decorated (twisted) polygon, and the extension of the pentagram map to the corresponding decorated configuration space.
Algorithms for Solving Rubik's Cubes

The Rubik's Cube is perhaps the world's most famous and iconic puzzle, well-known to have a rich underlying mathematical structure (group theory). In this paper, we show that the Rubik's Cube also has a rich underlying algorithmic structure. Specifically, we show that the n x n x n Rubik's Cube, as well as the n x n x 1 variant, has a "God's Number" (diameter of the configuration space) of Theta(n^2/log n). The upper bound comes from effectively parallelizing standard Theta(n^2) solution algorithms, while the lower bound follows from a counting argument. The upper bound gives an asymptotically optimal algorithm for solving a general Rubik's Cube in the worst case. Given a specific starting state, we show how to find the shortest solution in an n x O(1) x O(1) Rubik's Cube. Finally, we show that finding this optimal solution becomes NP-hard in an n x n x 1 Rubik's Cube when the positions and colors of some of the cubies are ignored (not used in determining whether the cube is solved).
Cellular Stratified Spaces I: Face Categories and Classifying Spaces
The notion of cellular stratified spaces was introduced in a joint work of the author with Basabe, González, and Rudyak [1009.1851] with the aim of constructing a cellular model of the configuration space of a sphere. In particular, it was shown that the classifying space (order complex) of the face poset of a totally normal regular cellular stratified space $X$ can be embedded in $X$ as a strong deformation retract.
Here we elaborate on this idea and develop the theory of cellular stratified spaces. We introduce the notion of cylindrically normal cellular stratified spaces and associate a topological category $C(X)$, called the face category, to such a stratified space $X$. We show that the classifying space $BC(X)$ of $C(X)$ can be naturally embedded into $X$. When $X$ is a cell complex, the embedding is a homeomorphism and we obtain an extension of the barycentric subdivision of regular cell complexes. Furthermore, when the cellular stratification on $X$ is locally polyhedral, we show that $BC(X)$ is a deformation retract of $X$.
We discuss possible applications at the end of the paper. In particular, the results in this paper can be regarded as a common framework for the Salvetti complex for the complement of a complexified hyperplane arrangement and a version of Morse theory due to Cohen, Jones, and Segal.
Equipartition of several measures
We prove several results of the following type: any $d$ measures in $\mathbb R^d$ can be partitioned simultaneously into $k$ equal parts by a convex partition (this particular result is proved independently by Pablo Soberón). Another example is: Any convex body in the plane can be partitioned into $q$ parts of equal areas and perimeters provided $q$ is a prime power.
The above results give a partial answer to several questions posed by A. Kaneko, M. Kano, R. Nandakumar, N. Ramana Rao, and I. Bárány. The proofs in this paper are inspired by the generalization of the Borsuk--Ulam theorem by M. Gromov and Y. Memarian.
The main tolopogical tool in proving these facts is the lemma about the cohomology of configuration spaces originated in the work of V.A. Vasil'ev.
A newer version of this paper, merged with the similar paper of A. Hubard and B. Aronov is {arXiv:1306.2741}.
Discretized configurations and partial partitions

We show that the discretized configuration space of $k$ points in the $n$-simplex is homotopy equivalent to a wedge of spheres of dimension $n-k+1$. This space is homeomorphic to the order complex of the poset of ordered partial partitions of $\{1,...,n+1\}$ with exactly $k$ parts. We compute the exponential generating function for the Euler characteristic of this space in two different ways, thereby obtaining a topological proof of a combinatorial recurrence satisfied by the Stirling numbers of the second kind.

We construct bundles $E_k(\A,\F) \to M$ over the complement $M$ of a complex hyperplane arrangement \A, depending on an integer $k \geq 1$ and a set $\F=\{f_1, \ldots, f_μ\}$ of continuous functions $f_i \colon M \to \C$ whose differences are nonzero on $M$, generalizing the configuration space bundles arising in the Lawrence-Krammer-Bigelow representation of the pure braid group. We display such families \F\ for rank two arrangements, reflection arrangements of types $A_\ell$, $B_\ell$, $D_\ell$, $F_4$, and for arrangements supporting multinet structures with three classes, with the resulting bundles having nontrivial monodromy around each hyperplane. The construction extends to arbitrary arrangements by pulling back these bundles along products of inclusions arising from subarrangements of these types.
We then consider the faithfulness of the resulting representations of the arrangement group $π_1(M)$. We describe the kernel of the product $ρ_\X \colon G \to \prod_{S \in \X} G_S$ of homomorphisms of a finitely-generated group $G$ onto quotient groups $G_S$ determined by a family \X\ of subsets of a fixed set of generators of $G$, extending a result of T.~Stanford about Brunnian braids. When the projections $G \to G_S$ split in a compatible way, we show the image of $ρ_\X$ is normal with free abelian quotient, and identify the cohomological finiteness type of $G$. These results apply to some well-studied arrangements, implying several qualitative and residual properties of $π_1(M)$, including an alternate proof of a result of Artal, Cogolludo, and Matei on arrangement groups and Bestvina-Brady groups, and a dichotomy for a decomposable arrangement \A: either $π_1(M)$ has a conjugation-free presentation or it is not residually nilpotent.
Topology of configuration space of two particles on a graph, II

This paper continues the investigation of the configuration space of two distinct points on a graph. We analyze the process of adding an additional edge to the graph and the resulting changes in the topology of the configuration space. We introduce a linking bilinear form on the homology group of the graph with values in the cokernel of the intersection form (introduced in Part I of this work). For a large class of graphs, which we call mature graphs, we give explicit expressions for the homology groups of the configuration space. We show that under a simple condition, adding an edge to a mature graph yields another mature graph.
On the Homology of Configuration Spaces Associated to Centers of Mass

The aim of this paper is to make sample computations with the Salvetti complex of the "center of mass" arrangement introduced in [arXiv:math/0611732] by Cohen and Kamiyama. We compute the homology of the Salvetti complex of these arrangements with coefficients in the sign representation of symmetric groups on F_p in the case of four particles. We show, when p is an odd prime, the homology is isomorphic to the homology of the configuration space F(C,4) of distinct four points in the complex plane with the same coefficients. When p=2, we show the homology is different from that of F(C,4), hence obtain an alternative and more direct proof of a theorem of Cohen and Kamiyama in [arXiv:math/0611732].
Symmetric group actions on the cohomology of configurations in $R^d$
In this paper we deal with the action of the symmetric group on the cohomology of the configuration space $C_n(d)$ of $n$ points in $\mathbb{R}^d$. This topic has been studied by several authors (see the introduction). On the cohomology algebra $H^*(C_n(d); \mathbb{C})$ there is, in addition to the natural $S_n$-action, an extended action of $S_{n+1}$; this was first shown for the case when $d$ is even by Mathieu, Robinson and Whitehouse and the second author. For the case when $d$ is odd it was shown by Mathieu (anyway we will give an elementary algebraic construction of the extended action for this case). The purpose of this article is to present some results that can be obtained, in an elementary way, exploiting the interplay between the extended action and the standard action.
Branched polymers and hyperplane arrangements
We generalize the construction of connected branched polymers and the notion of the volume of the space of connected branched polymers studied by Brydges and Imbrie, and Kenyon and Winkler to any hyperplane arrangement A. The volume of the resulting configuration space of connected branched polymers associated to the hyperplane arrangement A is expressed through the value of the characteristic polynomial of A at 0. We give a more general definition of the space of branched polymers, where we do not require connectivity, and introduce the notion of q-volume for it, which is expressed through the value of the characteristic polynomial of A at -q. Finally, we relate the volume of the space of branched polymers to broken circuits and show that the cohomology ring of the space of branched polymers is isomorphic to the Orlik-Solomon algebra.
