Recovering trees from the cohomology ring of their configuration spaces
Given a tree $T$, the cohomology ring of its unordered configuration space $H^{\ast}(U\mathcal{D}^nT)$ is an exterior face algebra if $T$ is a binary core tree (if by removing the leaves from $T$ we obtain a binary tree), or if $n=4$. This means that every cup product is determined by a simplicial complex $K_nT$. In this paper we show how to recover the tree $T$ from the simplicial complex $K_nT$ when $n=4.$
Motivic factorisation of KZ local systems and deformations of representation and fusion rings
Let $\mathfrak{g}$ be a simple Lie algebra over $\mathbb{C}$. The KZ connection is a connection on the constant bundle associated to a set of $n$ finite dimensional irreducible representations of $\mathfrak{g}$ and a nonzero $κ\in \mathbb{C}$, over the configuration space of $n$-distinct points on the affine line. Via the work of Schechtman--Varchenko and Looijenga, when $κ$ is a rational number the associated local systems can be seen to be realisations of naturally defined motivic local systems. We prove a basic factorisation for the nearby cycles of these motivic local systems as some of the $n$ points coalesce. This leads to the construction of a family (parametrised by $κ$) of deformations over $\mathbb{Z}[t]$ of the representation ring of $\mathfrak{g}$--we call these enriched representation rings--which allows one to compute the ranks of the Hodge filtration of the associated variations of mixed Hodge structure; in turn, this has applications to both the local and global monodromy of the KZ connection. In the case of $\mathfrak{sl}_n$ we give an explicit algorithm for computing all products in the enriched representation rings, which we use to prove that if $1/κ$ is an integer then the global monodromy is finite and scalar. We also prove a similar factorisation result for motivic local systems associated to conformal blocks in genus $0$; this leads to the construction of a family of deformations of the fusion rings. Computations in these rings have potential applications to finiteness of global monodromy. Several open problems and conjectures are formulated. These include questions about motivic BGG-type resolutions and the relationship between the Hodge filtration and the filtration by conformal blocks at varying levels.

Configuration spaces of labeled points on a circle with two anchors
Published in Topology Appl. 315 (2022), Paper No. 10817, 18 pp • Search Publication
In this paper we calculate the homology of configuration spaces of $n$ points on a circle, subject to the condition that two pre-determined points are included in the configuration. We make use of discrete Morse theory both to determine the Betti numbers, as well as to provide an explicit combinatorial description of the bases both for homology and cohomology.

Homology and Euler characteristic of generalized anchored configuration spaces of graphs
In this paper we consider the generalized anchored configuration spaces on $n$ labeled points on a~graph. These are the spaces of all configurations of $n$ points on a~fixed graph $G$, subject to the condition that at least $q$ vertices in some pre-determined set $K$ of vertices of $G$ are included in each configuration. We give a non-alternating formula for the Euler characteristic of such spaces for arbitrary connected graphs, which are not trees. Furthermore, we completely determine the homology groups of the generalized anchored configuration spaces of $n$ points on a circle graph.

Lattice path matroidal subdivisions, Positive Tropical Grassmannian and Amplituhedron
We introduce the notion of lattice path matroidal subdivisions, or LPM subdivisions for short, and show that these subdivisions are regular and hence the weight vectors for them lie in the Dressian. This leads us to explore the structure of the set of these weights inside the Dressian and owing to the fact that Lattice path matroids are positroids, we move to the positive Dressian which in turn is equal to the positive tropical Grassmannian, an object of immense interest currently in Physics. This is related to the amplituhedron and positive configuration space, which we describe here and wish to explore these connections further.

A Serre spectral sequence for the moduli space of tropical curves
We construct, for all $g\geq 2$ and $n\geq 0$, a spectral sequence of rational $S_n$-representations which computes the $S_n$-equivariant reduced rational cohomology of the tropical moduli spaces of curves $Δ_{g,n}$ in terms of compactly supported cohomology groups of configuration spaces of $n$ points on graphs of genus $g$. Using the canonical $S_n$-equivariant isomorphisms $\widetilde{H}^{i-1}(Δ_{g,n};\mathbb{Q}) \cong W_0 H^i_c(\mathcal{M}_{g,n};\mathbb{Q})$, we calculate the weight $0$, compactly supported rational cohomology of the moduli spaces $\mathcal{M}_{g,n}$ in the range $g=3$ and $n\leq 9$, with partial computations available for $n\leq 13$.

Durfee rectangle identities as character identities for infinite Fibonacci configurations
We introduce a natural generalization of Maya diagrams -- the space of infinite Fibonacci configurations, which are specified functions on $\mathbb{Z}$ with values $1$ and $0$. Infinite Fibonacci configurations are particularly interesting as soon as they parametrize Feigin-Stoyanovsky type bases in lattice vertex superalgebras $V_{\sqrt{N}\mathbb{Z}}$ and their irreducible modules. We calculate the character of such configurations space by two different ways and obtain series of combinatorial identities. These identities turn out to be Durfee rectangle identities with shifts in base and height.

Robertson's conjecture and universal finite generation in the homology of graph braid groups
We formulate a categorification of Robertson's conjecture analogous to the categorical graph minor conjecture of Miyata--Proudfood--Ramos. We show that these conjectures imply the existence of a finite list of atomic graphs generating the homology of configuration spaces of graphs -- in fixed degree, with a fixed number of particles, under topological embeddings. We explain how the simplest case of our conjecture follows from work of Barter and Miyata--Proudfoot, implying that the category of cographs is Noetherian, a result of potential independent interest.

Embeddability of joinpowers, and minimal rank of partial matrices
A general position map $f:K\to M$ of a $k$-dimensional simplicial complex to a $2k$-dimensional manifold (for $k=1$, of a graph to a surface) is a $\mathbb Z_2$-embedding if $|fσ\cap fτ|$ is even for any non-adjacent $k$-faces $σ,τ$. We present criteria for $\mathbb Z_2$-embeddability of certain $k$-dimensional complex (for $k=1$, of any graph) to $2k$-dimensional manifolds. These criteria are $\bullet$ a `Kuratowski-type' version of the Fulek-Kynčl-Bikeev criteria (for $k=1$), and $\bullet$ a converse to the Dzhenzher-Skopenkov necessary condition (for $k>1$). Our higher-dimensional criterion allows us to reduce the modulo 2 Kühnel problem on embeddings to a purely algebraic problem. Our proof is interplay between geometric topology, combinatorics and linear algebra. It is based on calculation of generators in the homology of certain configuration space (the deleted product) of certain complex (joinpower).

Local dimer dynamics in higher dimensions
We consider local dynamics of the dimer model (perfect matchings) on hypercubic boxes $[n]^d$. These consist of successively switching the dimers along alternating cycles of prescribed (small) lengths. We study the connectivity properties of the dimer configuration space equipped with these transitions. Answering a question of Freire, Klivans, Milet and Saldanha, we show that in three dimensions any configuration admits an alternating cycle of length at most 6. We further establish that any configuration on $[n]^d$ features order $n^{d-2}$ alternating cycles of length at most $4d-2$. We also prove that the dynamics of dimer configurations on the unit hypercube of dimension $d$ is ergodic when switching alternating cycles of length at most $4d-4$. Finally, in the planar but non-bipartite case, we show that parallelogram-shaped boxes in the triangular lattice are ergodic for switching alternating cycles of lengths 4 and 6 only, thus improving a result of Kenyon and Rémila, which also uses 8-cycles. None of our proofs make reference to height functions.

Generalized Color Orderings: CEGM Integrands and Decoupling Identities
Published • View PublicationBIB
In a recent paper, we defined generalized color orderings (GCO) and Feynman diagrams (GFD) to compute color-dressed generalized biadjoint amplitudes. In this work, we study the Cachazo-Early-Guevara-Mizera (CEGM) representation of generalized partial amplitudes and ``decoupling" identities. This representation is a generalization of the Cachazo-He-Yuan (CHY) formulation as an integral over the configuration space $X(k,n)$ of $n$ points on $\mathbb{CP}^{k-1}$ in generic position. Unlike the $k=2$ case, Parke-Taylor-like integrands are not enough to compute all partial amplitudes for $k>2$. Here we give a set of constraints that integrands associated with GCOs must satisfy and use them to construct all $(3,n<9)$ integrands, all $(3,9)$ integrands up to four undetermined constants, and $95 \%$ of $(4,8)$ integrands up to 24 undetermined constants. $k=2$ partial amplitudes are known to satisfy identities. Among them, the so-called $U(1)$ decoupling identities are the simplest ones. These are characterized by a label $i$ and a color ordering in $X(2,|[n]\setminus \{i\}|)$. Here we introduce decoupling identities for $k>2$ determined combinatorially using GCOs. Moreover, we identify the natural analog of $U(1)$ identities as those characterized by a pair of labels $i\neq j$, and a pair of GCOs, one in $X(k,|[n]\setminus \{i\}|)$ and the other in $X(k-1,|[n]\setminus \{j\}|)$. We call them {\it double extension} identities. We also provide explicit connections among different ways of representing GCOs, such as configurations of lines, configurations of points, and reorientation classes of uniform oriented matroids (chirotopes).

Books, Hallways and Social Butterflies: A Note on Sliding Block Puzzles
Published in The Mathematical Intelligencer (2024): 1-14 • Search Publication
Recall the classical 15-puzzle, consisting of 15 sliding blocks in a $4\times 4$ grid. Famously, the configuration space of this puzzle consists of two connected components, corresponding to the odd and even permutations of the symmetric group $S_{15}$. In 1974, Wilson generalised sliding block puzzles beyond the $4\times 4$ grid to arbitrary graphs (considering $n-1$ sliding blocks on a graph with $n$ vertices), and characterised the graphs for which the corresponding configuration space is connected. In this work, we extend Wilson's characterisation to sliding block puzzles with an arbitrary number of blocks (potentially leaving more than one empty vertex). For any graph, we determine how many empty vertices are necessary to connect the corresponding configuration space, and more generally we provide an algorithm to determine whether any two configurations are connected. Our work may also be interpreted within the framework of "Friends and Strangers graphs", where empty vertices correspond to "social butterflies" and sliding blocks to "asocial" people.

Cooperative envy-free division
Relying on configuration spaces and equivariant topology, we study a general "cooperative envy-free division problem". A group of players want to cut a "cake" $I=[0,1]$ and divide among themselves the pieces in an envy-free manner. Once the cake is cut and served in plates on a round table (at most one piece per plate), each player makes her choice by pointing at one (or several) plates she prefers. The novelty is that her choice may depend on the whole "allocation configuration". In particular, a player may choose an empty plate (possibly preferring one of the empty plates over the other), and take into account not only the content of her preferred plate, but also the content of the neighbouring plates. We show that if the number of players is a prime power, in this setting an envy-free division exists under standard assumptions that the preferences are closed.

A realization of poset associahedra
Given any connected poset $P$, we give a simple realization of Galashin's poset associahedron $\mathscr{A}(P)$ as a convex polytope in $\mathbb{R}^P.$ The realization is inspired by the description of $\mathscr{A}(P)$ as a compactification of the configuration space of order-preserving maps $P \to \mathbb{R}.$ In addition, we give an analogous realization for Galashin's affine poset cyclohedra.

Representation Stability for Disks in a Strip
We consider the ordered configuration space of $n$ open unit-diameter disks in the infinite strip of width $w$. In the spirit of Arnol'd and Cohen, we provide a finite presentation for the rational homology groups of this ordered configuration space as a twisted algebra. We use this presentation to prove that the ordered configuration space of open unit-diameter disks in the infinite strip of width $w$ exhibits a notion of first-order representation stability similar to Church--Ellenberg--Farb and Miller--Wilson's first-order representation stability for the ordered configuration space of points in a manifold. In addition, we prove that for large $w$ this disk configuration space exhibits notions of second- (and higher) order representation stability.

Cup products and the higher topological complexity of configuration spaces of the circle with two anchored points
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we show how to compute cup products in the anchored configuration space of the circle with two anchored points using discrete Morse theory. Knowing how to compute cup products allows us to obtain bounds for the (higher) topological complexity $TC_s$, which are sharp for a sufficiently large value of $s$.

Morse theory for discrete magnetic operators and nodal count distribution for graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a discrete Schrödinger operator $h$ on a finite connected graph $G$ of $n$ vertices, the nodal count $φ(h,k)$ denotes the number of edges on which the $k$-th eigenvector changes sign. A {\em signing} $h'$ of $h$ is any real symmetric matrix constructed by changing the sign of some off-diagonal entries of $h$, and its nodal count is defined according to the signing. The set of signings of $h$ lie in a naturally defined torus $\mathbb{T}_h$ of ``magnetic perturbations" of $h$. G. Berkolaiko discovered that every signing $h'$ of $h$ is a critical point of every eigenvalue $λ_k:\mathbb{T}_h \to \mathbb{R}$, with Morse index equal to the nodal surplus. We add further Morse theoretic information to this result. We show if $h_α \in \mathbb{T}_h$ is a critical point of $λ_k$ and the eigenvector vanishes at a single vertex $v$ of degree $d$, then the critical point lies in a nondegenerate critical submanifold of dimension $d+n-4$, closely related to the configuration space of a planar linkage. We compute its Morse index in terms of spectral data. The average nodal surplus distribution is the distribution of values of $φ(h',k)-(k-1)$, averaged over all signings $h'$ of $h$. If all critical points correspond to simple eigenvalues with nowhere-vanishing eigenvectors, then the average nodal surplus distribution is binomial. In general, we conjecture that the nodal surplus distribution converges to a Gaussian in a CLT fashion as the first Betti number of $G$ goes to infinity.

Rational Homotopy Type of Complements of Submanifold Arrangements
In this work we provide an explicit cdga that controls the rational homotopy type of the complement $X-\cup_i Z_i$, where $X$ is a smooth compact algebraic variety and $\{Z_i\}$ is a collection of subvarieties such that all set-theoretical intersections are smooth. The model is given in terms of the cohomology of all intersections of $Z_i$'s, and the natural maps induced by the inclusions. Our construction is inspired by the work of J.Morgan, who covered the fundamental case where $\{Z_i\}$ is a divisor with normal crossings, and it is built on developments of the theory of mixed Hodge diagrams by Cirici-Horel. We avoid any explicit reduction to the normal crossings divisor case, e.g. via the wonderful compactification of De Concini-Procesi. As an application of our approach we recover and generalize a few separate results on the complements of arrangements in a uniform manner. These include the Kritz-Totaro model for graph configuration spaces, Yuzvinsky's model for affine subspace arrangements and Dupont's model for complements of hypersurfaces with hyperplane-like intersection.

Constrainahedra
We define a family of convex polytopes called constrainahedra, which index collisions of horizontal and vertical lines. Our construction proceeds by first defining a poset $C(m,n)$ of good rectangular preorders, then proving that $C(m,n)$ is a lattice, and finally constructing a polytopal realization by taking the convex hull of a certain explicitly-defined collection of points. The constrainahedra will form the combinatorial backbone of the second author's construction of strong homotopy duoids. We indicate how constrainahedra could be realized as Gromov-compactified configuration spaces of horizontal and vertical lines; viewed from this perspective, the constrainahedra include naturally into the first author's notion of 2-associahedra.
Asymptotic Betti numbers for hard squares in the homological liquid regime
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study configuration spaces $C(n; p, q)$ of $n$ ordered unit squares in a $p$ by $q$ rectangle. Our goal is to estimate the Betti numbers for large $n$, $j$, $p$, and $q$. We consider sequences of area-normalized coordinates, where $(\frac{n}{pq}, \frac{j}{pq})$ converges as $n$, $j$, $p$, and $q$ approach infinity. For every sequence that converges to a point in the "feasible region" in the $(x,y)$-plane, we show that the factorial growth rate of the Betti numbers is the same as the factorial growth rate of $n!$. This implies that (1) the Betti numbers are vastly larger than for the configuration space of $n$ ordered points in the plane, which have the factorial growth rate of $j!$, and (2) every point in the feasible region is eventually in the homological liquid regime.
