On zero-sum spanning trees and zero-sum connectivity
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider $2$-colourings $f : E(G) \rightarrow \{ -1 ,1 \}$ of the edges of a graph $G$ with colours $-1$ and $1$ in $\mathbb{Z}$. A subgraph $H$ of $G$ is said to be a zero-sum subgraph of $G$ under $f$ if $f(H) := \sum_{e\in E(H)} f(e) =0$. We study the following type of questions, in several cases obtaining best possible results: Under which conditions on $|f(G)|$ can we guarantee the existence of a zero-sum spanning tree of $G$? The types of $G$ we consider are complete graphs, $K_3$-free graphs, $d$-trees, and maximal planar graphs. We also answer the question of when any such colouring contains a zero-sum spanning path or a zero-sum spanning tree of diameter at most $3$, showing in passing that the diameter-$3$ condition is best possible. Finally, we give, for $G = K_n$, a sharp bound on $|f(K_n)|$ by which an interesting zero-sum connectivity property is forced, namely that any two vertices are joined by a zero-sum path of length at most $4$. One feature of this paper is the proof of an Interpolation Lemma leading to a Master Theorem from which many of the above results follow and which can be of independent interest.

Asymptotic Enumeration and Limit Laws for Multisets: the Subexponential Case
Published • View Publication • BIB
For a given combinatorial class $\mathcal{C}$ we study the class $\mathcal{G} = \mathrm{MSET}(\mathcal{C})$ satisfying the multiset construction, that is, any object in $\mathcal{G}$ is uniquely determined by a set of $\mathcal{C}$-objects paired with their multiplicities. For example, $\mathrm{MSET}(\mathbb{N})$ is (isomorphic to) the class of number partitions of positive integers, a prominent and well-studied case. The multiset construction appears naturally in the study of unlabelled objects, for example graphs or various structures related to number partitions. Our main result establishes the asymptotic size of the set $\mathcal{G}_{n,N}$ that contains all multisets in $\mathcal{G}$ having size $n$ and being comprised of $N$ objects from $\mathcal{C}$, as $n$ \emph{and} $N$ tend to infinity and when the counting sequence of $\mathcal{C}$ is governed by subexponential growth; this is a particularly important setting in combinatorial applications. Moreover, we study the component distribution of random objects from $\mathcal{G}_{n,N}$ and we discover a phenomenon that we baptise \emph{extreme condensation}: taking away the largest component as well as all the components of the smallest possible size, we are left with an object which converges in distribution as $n,N\to\infty$. The distribution of the limiting object is also retrieved. Moreover and rather surprisingly, in stark contrast to analogous results for labelled objects, the results here hold uniformly in $N$.

Boolean elements in the Bruhat order
Published • View Publication • BIB
We show that $w\in W$ is boolean if and only if it avoids a set of Billey-Postnikov patterns, which we describe explicitly. Our proof is based on an analysis of inversion sets, and it is in large part type-uniform. We also introduce the notion of linear pattern avoidance, and show that boolean elements are characterized by avoiding just the $3$ linear patterns $s_1 s_2 s_1 \in W(A_2)$, $s_2 s_1 s_3 s_2 \in W(A_3)$, and $s_2 s_1 s_3 s_4 s_2 \in W(D_4)$. We also consider the more general case of $k$-boolean Weyl group elements. We say that $w\in W$ is $k$-boolean if every reduced expression for $w$ contains at most $k$ copies of each generator. We show that the $2$-boolean elements of the symmetric group $S_n$ are characterized by avoiding the patterns $3421,4312,4321,$ and $456123$, and give a rational generating function for the number of $2$-boolean elements of $S_n$.

The signless Laplacian spectral radius of graphs with forbidding linear forests
Published in Linear algebra Application 591(2020)25-43 • View Publication • BIB
Turán type extremal problem is how to maximize the number of edges over all graphs which do not contain fixed forbidden subgraphs. Similarly, spectral Turán type extremal problem is how to maximize (signless Laplacian) spectral radius over all graphs which do not contain fixed subgraphs. In this paper, we first present a stability result for $k\cdot P_3$ in terms of the number of edges and then determine all extremal graphs maximizing the signless Laplacian spectral radius over all graphs which do not contain a fixed linear forest with at most two odd paths or $k\cdot P_3$ as a subgraph, respectively.
Adapting the Directed Grid Theorem into an FPT Algorithm
Published • View Publication • BIB
The Grid Theorem of Robertson and Seymour [JCTB, 1986], is one of the most important tools in the field of structural graph theory, finding numerous applications in the design of algorithms for undirected graphs. An analogous version of the Grid Theorem in digraphs was conjectured by Johnson et al. [JCTB, 2001], and proved by Kawarabayashi and Kreutzer [STOC, 2015]. Namely, they showed that there is a function $f(k)$ such that every digraph of directed tree-width at least $f(k)$ contains a cylindrical grid of size $k$ as a butterfly minor and stated that their proof can be turned into an XP algorithm, with parameter $k$, that either constructs a decomposition of the appropriate width, or finds the claimed large cylindrical grid as a butterfly minor. In this paper, we adapt some of the steps of the proof of Kawarabayashi and Kreutzer to improve this XP algorithm into an FPT algorithm. Towards this, our main technical contributions are two FPT algorithms with parameter $k$. The first one either produces an arboreal decomposition of width $3k-2$ or finds a haven of order $k$ in a digraph $D$, improving on the original result for arboreal decompositions by Johnson et al. The second algorithm finds a well-linked set of order $k$ in a digraph $D$ of large directed tree-width. As tools to prove these results, we show how to solve a generalized version of the problem of finding balanced separators for a given set of vertices $T$ in FPT time with parameter $|T|$, a result that we consider to be of its own interest.
Permutree sorting
Published in Alg. Comb., 6(1):53-74, 2023 • View Publication • BIB
Generalizing stack sorting and $c$-sorting for permutations, we define the permutree sorting algorithm. Given two disjoint subsets $U$ and $D$ of $\{2, \dots, n-1\}$, the $(U,D)$-permutree sorting tries to sort the permutation $π\in \mathfrak{S}_n$ and fails if and only if there are $1 \le i < j < k \le n$ such that $π$ contains the subword $jki$ if $j \in U$ and $kij$ if $j \in D$. This algorithm is seen as a way to explore an automaton which either rejects all reduced expressions of $π$, or accepts those reduced expressions for $π$ whose prefixes are all $(U,D)$-permutree sortable.
Empty Rainbow Triangles in $k$-colored Point Sets
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $S$ be a set of $n$ points in general position in the plane. Suppose that each point of $S$ has been assigned one of $k \ge 3$ possible colors and that there is the same number, $m$, of points of each color class. A polygon with vertices on $S$ is empty if it does not contain points of $S$ in its interior; and it is rainbow if all its vertices have different colors. Let $f(k,m)$ be the minimum number of empty rainbow triangles determined by $S$. In this paper we give tight asymptotic bounds for this function. Furthermore, we show that $S$ may not determine an empty rainbow quadrilateral for some arbitrarily large values of $k$ and $m$.
Supersaturation, counting, and randomness in forbidden subposet problems
Published • View Publication • BIB
In the area of forbidden subposet problems we look for the largest possible size $La(n,P)$ of a family $\mathcal{F}\subseteq 2^{[n]}$ that does not contain a forbidden inclusion pattern described by $P$. The main conjecture of the area states that for any finite poset $P$ there exists an integer $e(P)$ such that $La(n,P)=(e(P)+o(1))\binom{n}{\lfloor n/2\rfloor}$. In this paper, we formulate three strengthenings of this conjecture and prove them for some specific classes of posets. (The parameters $x(P)$ and $d(P)$ are defined in the paper.) $\bullet$ For any finite connected poset $P$ and $\varepsilon>0$, there exists $δ>0$ and an integer $x(P)$ such that for any $n$ large enough, and $\mathcal{F}\subseteq 2^{[n]}$ of size $(e(P)+\varepsilon)\binom{n}{\lfloor n/2\rfloor}$, $\mathcal{F}$ contains at least $δn^{x(P)}\binom{n}{\lfloor n/2\rfloor}$ copies of $P$. $\bullet$ The number of $P$-free families in $2^{[n]}$ is $2^{(e(P)+o(1))\binom{n}{\lfloor n/2\rfloor}}$. $\bullet$ For any finite poset $P$, there exists a positive rational $d(P)$ such that if $p=ω(n^{-d(P)})$, then the size of the largest $P$-free family in $\mathcal{P}(n,p)$ is $(e(P)+o(1))p\binom{n}{\lfloor n/2\rfloor}$ with high probability.

The maximum spectral radius of wheel-free graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A wheel graph is a graph formed by connecting a single vertex to all vertices of a cycle. A graph is called wheel-free if it does not contain any wheel graph as a subgraph. In 2010, Nikiforov proposed a Brualdi-Solheid-Turán type problem: what is the maximum spectral radius of a graph of order $n$ that does not contain subgraphs of particular kind. In this paper, we study the Brualdi-Solheid-Turán type problem for wheel-free graphs, and we determine the maximum (signless Laplacian) spectral radius of a wheel-free graph of order $n$. Furthermore, we characterize the extremal graphs.

Alon -- Tarsi numbers of direct products
Published in Moscow J. Comb. Number Th. 10 (2021) 271-279 • View Publication • BIB
We provide a general framework on the coefficients of the graph polynomials of graphs which are Cartesian products. As a corollary, we prove that if $G=(V,E)$ is a graph with degrees of vertices $2d(v), v\in V$, and the graph polynomial $\prod_{(i,j)\in E} (x_j-x_i)$ contains an "almost central" monomial (that means a monomial $\prod_v x_v^{c_v}$, where $|c_v-d(v)|\leqslant 1$ for all $v\in V$), then the Cartesian product $G\square C_{2n}$ is $(d(\cdot)+2)$-choosable.

Kruskal-Katona's function and a variation of cross-intersecting antichains
Published in Discrete Math., 345, (2021), Article 112709 • Search Publication
We prove some properties of the Kruskal-Katona function, and apply to the following variation of cross-intersecting antichains. Let $n\ge 4$ be an even integer and $\mathscr{A}$ and $\mathscr{B}$ be two cross-intersecting antichains of $\mathbb{N}_n$ with at most $k$ disjoint pairs, i.e. for all $A_i\in \mathscr{A}$, $B_j\in\mathscr{B}$, $A_i\cap B_j=\emptyset$ only if $i=j\le k$. We prove a best possible upper bound on $|\mathscr{A}|+|\mathscr{B}|$. Furthermore, we show that the extremal families contain only $\frac{n}{2}$ and $(\frac{n}{2}+1)$-sets.

An infinite antichain of planar tanglegrams
Published • View Publication • BIB
Contrary to the expectation arising from the tanglegram Kuratowski theorem of É. Czabarka, L.A. Székely and S. Wagner [SIAM J. Discrete Math. 31(3): 1732--1750, (2017)], we construct an infinite antichain of planar tanglegrams with respect to the induced subtanglegram partial order. R.E. Tarjan, R. Laver, D.A. Spielman and M. Bóna, and possibly others, showed that the partially ordered set of finite permutations ordered by deletion of entries contains an infinite antichain, i.e. there exists an infinite collection of permutations, such that none of them contains another as a pattern. Our construction adds a twist to the construction of Spielman and Bóna [Electr. J. Comb, Vol. 7. N2.]
Gallai-Ramsey number for the union of stars
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a graph $G$ and a positive integer $k$, define the \emph{Gallai-Ramsey number} to be the minimum number of vertices $n$ such that any $k$-edge coloring of the complete graph $K_n$ contains either a rainbow (all different colored) triangle or a monochromatic copy of $G$. In this paper, we obtain the exact value of the Gallai-Ramsey numbers for the union of two stars in many cases and bounds in other cases. This work represents the first class of disconnected graphs to be considered as the desired monochromatic subgraph.

We prove that if $\varepsilon(m)\to 0$ arbitrarily slowly, then for almost all $m$ and any $A\subset\mathbb{Z}_m$ such that $A-A$ does not contain non-zero quadratic residues we have $|A|\leq m^{1/2-\varepsilon(m)}.$
Target set selection with maximum activation time
Published • View Publication • BIB
A target set selection model is a graph $G$ with a threshold function $τ:V\to \mathbb{N}$ upper-bounded by the vertex degree. For a given model, a set $S_0\subseteq V(G)$ is a target set if $V(G)$ can be partitioned into non-empty subsets $S_0,S_1,\dotsc,S_t$ such that, for $i \in \{1, \ldots, t\}$, $S_i$ contains exactly every vertex $v$ having at least $τ(v)$ neighbors in $S_0\cup\dots\cup S_{i-1}$. We say that $t$ is the activation time $t_τ(S_0)$ of the target set $S_0$. The problem of, given such a model, finding a target set of minimum size has been extensively studied in the literature. In this article, we investigate its variant, which we call TSS-time, in which the goal is to find a target set $S_0$ that maximizes $t_τ(S_0)$. That is, given a graph $G$, a threshold function $τ$ in $G$, and an integer $k$, the objective of the TSS-time problem is to decide whether $G$ contains a target set $S_0$ such that $t_τ(S_0)\geq k$. Let $τ^* = \max_{v \in V(G)} τ(v)$. Our main result is the following dichotomy about the complexity of TSS-time when $G$ belongs to a minor-closed graph class ${\cal C}$: if ${\cal C}$ has bounded local treewidth, the problem is FPT parameterized by $k$ and $τ^{\star}$; otherwise, it is NP-complete even for fixed $k=4$ and $τ^{\star}=2$. We also prove that, with $τ^*=2$, the problem is NP-hard in bipartite graphs for fixed $k=5$, and from previous results we observe that TSS-time is NP-hard in planar graphs and W[1]-hard parameterized by treewidth. Finally, we present a linear-time algorithm to find a target set $S_0$ in a given tree maximizing $t_τ(S_0)$.
Computing Dense and Sparse Subgraphs of Weakly Closed Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A graph $G$ is weakly $γ$-closed if every induced subgraph of $G$ contains one vertex $v$ such that for each non-neighbor $u$ of $v$ it holds that $|N(u)\cap N(v)|<γ$. The weak closure $γ(G)$ of a graph, recently introduced by Fox et al. [SIAM J. Comp. 2020], is the smallest number such that $G$ is weakly $γ$-closed. This graph parameter is never larger than the degeneracy (plus one) and can be significantly smaller. Extending the work of Fox et al. [SIAM J. Comp. 2020] on clique enumeration, we show that several problems related to finding dense subgraphs, such as the enumeration of bicliques and $s$-plexes, are fixed-parameter tractable with respect to $γ(G)$. Moreover, we show that the problem of determining whether a weakly $γ$-closed graph $G$ has a subgraph on at least $k$ vertices that belongs to a graph class $\mathcal{G}$ which is closed under taking subgraphs admits a kernel with at most $γk^2$ vertices. Finally, we provide fixed-parameter algorithms for Independent Dominating Set and Dominating Clique when parameterized by $γ+k$ where $k$ is the solution size.

Bounds for Gallai-Ramsey functions and numbers
For two graphs $G,H$ and a positive integer $k$, the \emph{Gallai-Ramsey number} $\operatorname{gr}_k(G,H)$ is defined as the minimum number of vertices $n$ such that any $k$-edge-coloring of $K_n$ contains either a rainbow (all different colored) copy of $G$ or a monochromatic copy of $H$. If $G$ and $H$ are both complete graphs, then we call it Gallai-Ramsey function. Fox and Sudakov proved $\operatorname{gr}_k(K_s,K_t)\leq s^{4kt}$. Alon et al. showed that $\operatorname{gr}_k(K_s,K_t)\leq (2s^3+4s^2)^{kt}$. In this paper, we prove that $\operatorname{gr}_k(K_s,K_t)\leq 2^{kt}s^{3kt}$ for $t\geq 47$. We also give better upper bounds for $\operatorname{gr}_k(G,H)$ when $G,H$ are some special graphs. In this paper, we derive some lower bounds for Gallai-Ramsey functions and numbers by Lovász Local Lemma.

Breaking the logarithmic barrier in Roth's theorem on arithmetic progressions
We show that if $A\subset \{1,\ldots,N\}$ contains no non-trivial three-term arithmetic progressions then $\lvert A\rvert \ll N/(\log N)^{1+c}$ for some absolute constant $c>0$. In particular, this proves the first non-trivial case of a conjecture of Erdős on arithmetic progressions.

A Sylvester-Gallai result for concurrent lines in the complex plane
Published • View Publication • BIB
We show that if a set of points in $\mathbb{C}^2$ lies on a family of $m$ concurrent lines, and if one of those lines contains more than $m-2$ points, then there is a line passing through exactly two points of the set. The bound $m-2$ in our result is optimal. Our main theorem resolves a conjecture of Frank de Zeeuw, and generalizes a result of Kelly and Nwankpa.

Large independent sets from local considerations
The following natural problem was raised independently by Erdős-Hajnal and Linial-Rabinovich in the late 80's. How large must the independence number $α(G)$ of a graph $G$ be whose every $m$ vertices contain an independent set of size $r$? In this paper we discuss new methods to attack this problem. The first new approach, based on bounding Ramsey numbers of certain graphs, allows us to improve previously best lower bounds due to Linial-Rabinovich, Erdős-Hajnal and Alon-Sudakov. As an example, we prove that any $n$-vertex graph $G$ having an independent set of size $3$ among every $7$ vertices has $α(G) \ge Ω(n^{5/12})$. This confirms a conjecture of Erdős and Hajnal that $α(G)$ should be at least $n^{1/3+\varepsilon}$ and brings the exponent half-way to the best possible value of $1/2$. Our second approach deals with upper bounds. It relies on a reduction of the original question to the following natural extremal problem. What is the minimum possible value of the $2$-density of a graph on $m$ vertices having no independent set of size $r$? This allows us to improve previous upper bounds due to Linial-Rabinovich, Krivelevich and Kostochka-Jancey. As part of our arguments we link the problem of Erdős-Hajnal and Linial-Rabinovich and our new extremal $2$-density problem to a number of other well-studied questions. This leads to many interesting directions for future research.
