Near Perfect Matchings in $k$-uniform Hypergraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $H$ be a $k$-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices where $n$ is a sufficiently large integer not divisible by $k$. We prove that if the minimum $(k-1)$-degree of $H$ is at least $\lfloor n/k \rfloor$, then $H$ contains a matching with $\lfloor n/k\rfloor$ edges. This confirms a conjecture of Rödl, Ruciński and Szemerédi, who proved that the minimum $(k-1)$-degree $n/k+O(\log n)$ suffices. More generally, we show that $H$ contains a matching of size $d$ if its minimum codegree is $d<n/k$, which is also best possible.

Density of Range Capturing Hypergraphs
For a finite set $X$ of points in the plane, a set $S$ in the plane, and a positive integer $k$, we say that a $k$-element subset $Y$ of $X$ is captured by $S$ if there is a homothetic copy $S'$ of $S$ such that $X\cap S' = Y$, i.e., $S'$ contains exactly $k$ elements from $X$. A $k$-uniform $S$-capturing hypergraph $H = H(X,S,k)$ has a vertex set $X$ and a hyperedge set consisting of all $k$-element subsets of $X$ captured by $S$. In case when $k=2$ and $S$ is convex these graphs are planar graphs, known as convex distance function Delaunay graphs. In this paper we prove that for any $k\geq 2$, any $X$, and any convex compact set $S$, the number of hyperedges in $H(X,S,k)$ is at most $(2k-1)|X| - k^2 + 1 - \sum_{i=1}^{k-1}a_i$, where $a_i$ is the number of $i$-element subsets of $X$ that can be separated from the rest of $X$ with a straight line. In particular, this bound is independent of $S$ and indeed the bound is tight for all "round" sets $S$ and point sets $X$ in general position with respect to $S$. This refines a general result of Buzaglo, Pinchasi and Rote stating that every pseudodisc topological hypergraph with vertex set $X$ has $O(k^2|X|)$ hyperedges of size $k$ or less.
Tables, bounds and graphics of sizes of complete arcs in the plane $\mathrm{PG}(2,q)$ for all $q\le321007$ and sporadic $q$ in $[323761\ldots430007]$ obtained by an algorithm with fixed order of points (FOP)
In the previous works of the authors, a step-by-step algorithm FOP which uses any fixed order of points in the projective plane $\mathrm{PG}(2,q)$ is proposed to construct small complete arcs. In each step, the algorithm adds to a current arc the first point in the fixed order not lying on the bisecants of the arc. The algorithm is based on the intuitive postulate that $\mathrm{PG}(2,q)$ contains a sufficient number of relatively small complete arcs. Also, in the previous papers, it is shown that the type of order on the points of $\mathrm{PG}(2,q)$ is not relevant. A complete lexiarc in $\mathrm{PG}(2,q)$ is a complete arc obtained by the algorithm FOP using the lexicographical order of points. In this work, we collect and analyze the sizes of complete lexiarcs in the following regions: \begin{align*}& \textbf{all } q\le321007,~ q \mbox{ prime power}; & 15 \mbox{ sporadic $q$'s in the interval }[323761\ldots430007], \mbox{ see (1.10)}. \end{align*} In the work [9], the smallest known sizes of complete arcs in $\mathrm{PG}(2,q)$ are collected for all $q\leq160001$, $q$ prime power. The sizes of complete arcs, collected in this work and in [9], provide the following upper bounds on the smallest size $t_{2}(2,q)$ of a complete arc in the projective plane $\mathrm{PG}(2,q)$: \begin{align*} t_{2}(2,q)&<0.998\sqrt{3q\ln q}<1.729\sqrt{q\ln q}&\mbox{ for }&&7&\le q\le160001;\\ t_{2}(2,q)&<1.05\sqrt{3q\ln q}<1.819\sqrt{q\ln q}&\mbox{ for }&&7&\le q\le321007. \end{align*} Our investigations and results allow to conjecture that the bound $t_{2}(2,q)<1.05\sqrt{3q\ln q}<1.819\sqrt{q\ln q}$ holds for all $q\ge7$. It is noted that sizes of the random complete arcs and complete lexiarcs behave similarly. This work can be considered as a continuation and development of the paper [11].

Decompositions of complete uniform hypergraphs into Hamilton Berge cycles
In 1973 Bermond, Germa, Heydemann and Sotteau conjectured that if $n$ divides $\binom{n}{k}$, then the complete $k$-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices has a decomposition into Hamilton Berge cycles. Here a Berge cycle consists of an alternating sequence $v_1,e_1,v_2,\dots,v_n,e_n$ of distinct vertices $v_i$ and distinct edges $e_i$ so that each $e_i$ contains $v_i$ and $v_{i+1}$. So the divisibility condition is clearly necessary. In this note, we prove that the conjecture holds whenever $k \ge 4$ and $n \ge 30$. Our argument is based on the Kruskal-Katona theorem. The case when $k=3$ was already solved by Verrall, building on results of Bermond.

Coloring Digraphs with Forbidden Cycles
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $k$ and $r$ be two integers with $k \ge 2$ and $k\ge r \ge 1$. In this paper we show that (1) if a strongly connected digraph $D$ contains no directed cycle of length $1$ modulo $k$, then $D$ is $k$-colorable; and (2) if a digraph $D$ contains no directed cycle of length $r$ modulo $k$, then $D$ can be vertex-colored with $k$ colors so that each color class induces an acyclic subdigraph in $D$. The first result gives an affirmative answer to a question posed by Tuza in 1992, and the second implies the following strong form of a conjecture of Diwan, Kenkre and Vishwanathan: If an undirected graph $G$ contains no cycle of length $r$ modulo $k$, then $G$ is $k$-colorable if $r\ne 2$ and $(k+1)$-colorable otherwise. Our results also strengthen several classical theorems on graph coloring proved by Bondy, Erdős and Hajnal, Gallai and Roy, Gyárfás, etc.

Integer decomposition property of free sums of convex polytopes
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $\mathcal{P} \subset \mathbb{R}^{d}$ and $\mathcal{Q} \subset \mathbb{R}^e$ be integral convex polytopes of dimension $d$ and $e$ which contain the origin of $\mathbb{R}^{d}$ and $\mathbb{R}^e$, respectively. In the present paper, under some assumptions, the necessary and sufficient condition for the free sum of $\mathcal{P}$ and $\mathcal{Q}$ to possess the integer decomposition property will be presented.

When does a biased graph come from a group labelling?
Published • View Publication • BIB
A biased graph consists of a graph $G$ together with a collection of distinguished cycles of $G$, called balanced cycles, with the property that no theta subgraph contains exactly two balanced cycles. Perhaps the most natural biased graphs on $G$ arise from orienting $G$ and then labelling the edges of $G$ with elements of a group $Γ$. In this case, we may define a biased graph by declaring a cycle to be balanced if the product of the labels on its edges is the identity, with the convention that we take the inverse value for an edge traversed backwards. Our first result gives a natural topological characterisation of biased graphs arising from group-labellings. In the second part of this article, we use this theorem to construct some exceptional biased graphs. Notably, we prove that for every $m \ge 3$ and $\ell$ there exists a minor minimal not group labellable biased graph on $m$ vertices where every pair of vertices is joined by at least $\ell$ edges. Finally, we show that these results extend to give infinite families of excluded minors for certain families of frame and lift matroids.
Veldkamp-Space Aspects of a Sequence of Nested Binary Segre Varieties
Published in Ann. Inst. Henri Poincare Comb. Phys. Interact. 2 (2015) 309-333 • View Publication • BIB
Let $S_{(N)} \equiv PG(1,\,2) \times PG(1,\,2) \times \cdots \times PG(1,\,2)$ be a Segre variety that is $N$-fold direct product of projective lines of size three. Given two geometric hyperplanes $H'$ and $H''$ of $S_{(N)}$, let us call the triple $\{H', H'', \overline{H' ΔH''}\}$ the Veldkamp line of $S_{(N)}$. We shall demonstrate, for the sequence $2 \leq N \leq 4$, that the properties of geometric hyperplanes of $S_{(N)}$ are fully encoded in the properties of Veldkamp {\it lines} of $S_{(N-1)}$. Using this property, a complete classification of all types of geometric hyperplanes of $S_{(4)}$ is provided. Employing the fact that, for $2 \leq N \leq 4$, the (ordinary part of) Veldkamp space of $S_{(N)}$ is $PG(2^N-1,2)$, we shall further describe which types of geometric hyperplanes of $S_{(N)}$ lie on a certain hyperbolic quadric $\mathcal{Q}_0^+(2^N-1,2) \subset PG(2^N-1,2)$ that contains the $S_{(N)}$ and is invariant under its stabilizer group; in the $N=4$ case we shall also single out those of them that correspond, via the Lagrangian Grassmannian of type $LG(4,8)$, to the set of 2295 maximal subspaces of the symplectic polar space $\mathcal{W}(7,2)$.

Maximal increasing sequences in fillings of almost-moon polyominoes
It was proved by Rubey that the number of fillings with zeros and ones of a given moon polyomino that do not contain a northeast chain of size $k$ depends only on the set of columns of the polyomino, but not the shape of the polyomino. Rubey's proof is an adaption of jeu de taquin and promotion for arbitrary fillings of moon polyominoes. In this paper we present a bijective proof for this result by considering fillings of almost-moon polyominoes, which are moon polyominoes after removing one of the rows. Explicitly, we construct a bijection which preserves the size of the largest northeast chains of the fillings when two adjacent rows of the polyomino are exchanged. This bijection also preserves the column sum of the fillings. We also present a bijection that preserves the size of the largest northeast chains, the row sum and the column sum if every row of the fillings has at most one 1.

Partitioning a Graph into Disjoint Cliques and a Triangle-free Graph
Published • View Publication • BIB
A graph $G = (V, E)$ is \emph{partitionable} if there exists a partition $\{A, B\}$ of $V$ such that $A$ induces a disjoint union of cliques and $B$ induces a triangle-free graph. In this paper we investigate the computational complexity of deciding whether a graph is partitionable. The problem is known to be $\NP$-complete on arbitrary graphs. Here it is proved that if a graph $G$ is bull-free, planar, perfect, $K_4$-free or does not contain certain holes then deciding whether $G$ is partitionable is $\NP$-complete. This answers an open question posed by Thomass{é}, Trotignon and Vuškovi{ć}. In contrast a finite list of forbidden induced subgraphs is given for partitionable cographs.

The algebraic square peg problem
The square peg problem asks whether every continuous curve in the plane that starts and ends at the same point without self-intersecting contains four distinct corners of some square. Toeplitz conjectured in 1911 that this is indeed the case. Hundred years later we only have partial results for curves with additional smoothness properties. The contribution of this thesis is an algebraic variant of the square peg problem. By casting the set of squares inscribed on an algebraic plane curve as a variety and applying Bernshtein's Theorem we are able to count the number of such squares. An algebraic plane curve defined by a polynomial of degree m inscribes either an infinite amount of squares, or at most (m^4 - 5m^2 + 4m)/4 squares. Computations using computer algebra software lend evidence to the claim that this upper bound is sharp for generic curves.

On the Erdos-Sos Conjecture for Graphs on n=k+4 Vertices

The Erdős-Sós Conjecture states that if $G$ is a simple graph of order $n$ with average degree more than $k-2,$ then $G$ contains every tree of order $k$. In this paper, we prove that Erdős-Sós Conjecture is true for $n=k+4$.

Tree-colorable maximal planar graphs
A tree-coloring of a maximal planar graph is a proper vertex $4$-coloring such that every bichromatic subgraph, induced by this coloring, is a tree. A maximal planar graph $G$ is tree-colorable if $G$ has a tree-coloring. In this article, we prove that a tree-colorable maximal planar graph $G$ with $δ(G)\geq 4$ contains at least four odd-vertices. Moreover, for a tree-colorable maximal planar graph of minimum degree 4 that contains exactly four odd-vertices, we show that the subgraph induced by its four odd-vertices is not a claw and contains no triangles.

Constructing large k-systems on Surfaces
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $S_{g}$ denote the genus $g$ closed orientable surface. For $k\in \mathbb{N}$, a $k$-system is a collection of pairwise non-homotopic simple closed curves such that no two intersect more than $k$ times. Juvan-Malnič-Mohar \cite{Ju-Mal-Mo} showed that there exists a $k$-system on $S_{g}$ whose size is on the order of $g^{k/4}$. For each $k\geq 2$, We construct a $k$-system on $S_{g}$ with on the order of $g^{\lfloor (k+1)/2 \rfloor +1}$ elements. The $k$-systems we construct behave well with respect to subsurface inclusion, analogously to how a pants decomposition contains pants decompositions of lower complexity subsurfaces.

On the algebraic and topological structure of the set of Turán densities
Published • View Publication • BIB
The present paper is concerned with the various algebraic structures supported by the set of Turán densities. We prove that the set of Turán densities of finite families of r-graphs is a non-trivial commutative semigroup, and as a consequence we construct explicit irrational densities for any r >= 3. The proof relies on a technique recently developed by Pikhurko. We also show that the set of all Turán densities forms a graded ring, and from this we obtain a short proof of a theorem of Peng on jumps of hypergraphs. Finally, we prove that the set of Turán densities of families of r-graphs has positive Lebesgue measure if and only if it contains an open interval. This is a simple consequence of Steinhaus's theorem.

Some Spectral Properties and Characterizations of Connected Odd-bipartite Uniform Hypergraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A $k$-uniform hypergraph $G=(V,E)$ is called odd-bipartite ([5]), if $k$ is even and there exists some proper subset $V_1$ of $V$ such that each edge of $G$ contains odd number of vertices in $V_1$. Odd-bipartite hypergraphs are generalizations of the ordinary bipartite graphs. We study the spectral properties of the connected odd-bipartite hypergraphs. We prove that the Laplacian H-spectrum and signless Laplacian H-spectrum of a connected $k$-uniform hypergraph $G$ are equal if and only if $k$ is even and $G$ is odd-bipartite. We further give several spectral characterizations of the connected odd-bipartite hypergraphs. We also give a characterization for a connected $k$-uniform hypergraph whose Laplacian spectral radius and signless Laplacian spectral radius are equal, thus provide an answer to a question raised in [9]. By showing that the Cartesian product $G\Box H$ of two odd-bipartite $k$-uniform hypergraphs is still odd-bipartite, we determine that the Laplacian spectral radius of $G\Box H$ is the sum of the Laplacian spectral radii of $G$ and $H$, when $G$ and $H$ are both connected odd-bipartite.

A density Corrádi-Hajnal Theorem
Published in Canad. J. Math. 67 (2015), no. 4, 721-758 • View Publication • BIB
We find, for all sufficiently large $n$ and each $k$, the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex graph which does not contain $k+1$ vertex-disjoint triangles. This extends a result of Moon [Canad. J. Math. 20 (1968), 96-102] which is in turn an extension of Mantel's Theorem. Our result can also be viewed as a density version of the Corradi-Hajnal Theorem.

A precise threshold for quasi-Ramsey numbers
Published in SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics 29(3): 1670-1682, 2015 • View Publication • BIB
We consider a variation of Ramsey numbers introduced by Erdős and Pach (1983), where instead of seeking complete or independent sets we only seek a $t$-homogeneous set, a vertex subset that induces a subgraph of minimum degree at least $t$ or the complement of such a graph. For any $ν> 0$ and positive integer $k$, we show that any graph $G$ or its complement contains as an induced subgraph some graph $H$ on $\ell \ge k$ vertices with minimum degree at least $\frac12(\ell-1) + ν$ provided that $G$ has at least $k^{Ω(ν^2)}$ vertices. We also show this to be best possible in a sense. This may be viewed as correction to a result claimed in Erdős and Pach (1983). For the above result, we permit $H$ to have order at least $k$. In the harder problem where we insist that $H$ have exactly $k$ vertices, we do not obtain sharp results, although we show a way to translate results of one form of the problem to the other.

Shapes of topological RNA structures
Published • View Publication • BIB
A topological RNA structure is derived from a diagram and its shape is obtained by collapsing the stacks of the structure into single arcs and by removing any arcs of length one. Shapes contain key topological, information and for fixed topological genus there exist only finitely many such shapes. We shall express topological RNA structures as unicellular maps, i.e. graphs together with a cyclic ordering of their half-edges. In this paper we prove a bijection of shapes of topological RNA structures. We furthermore derive a linear time algorithm generating shapes of fixed topological genus. We derive explicit expressions for the coefficients of the generating polynomial of these shapes and the generating function of RNA structures of genus $g$. Furthermore we outline how shapes can be used in order to extract essential information of RNA structure databases.
