Partial list colouring of certain graphs

Let $G$ be a graph on $n$ vertices and let $\mathcal{L}_k$ be an arbitrary function that assigns each vertex in $G$ a list of $k$ colours. Then $G$ is $\mathcal{L}_k$-list colourable if there exists a proper colouring of the vertices of $G$ such that every vertex is coloured with a colour from its own list. We say $G$ is $k$-choosable if for every such function $\mathcal{L}_k$, $G$ is $\mathcal{L}_k$-list colourable. The minimum $k$ such that $G$ is $k$-choosable is called the list chromatic number of $G$ and is denoted by $χ_L(G)$. Let $χ_L(G) = s$ and let $t$ be a positive integer less than $s$. The partial list colouring conjecture due to Albertson et al. \cite{albertson2000partial} states that for every $\mathcal{L}_t$ that maps the vertices of $G$ to $t$-sized lists, there always exists an induced subgraph of $G$ of size at least $\frac{tn}{s}$ that is $\mathcal{L}_t$-list colourable. In this paper we show that the partial list colouring conjecture holds true for certain classes of graphs like claw-free graphs, graphs with large chromatic number, chordless graphs, and series-parallel graphs.
In the second part of the paper, we put forth a question which is a variant of the partial list colouring conjecture: does $G$ always contain an induced subgraph of size at least $\frac{tn}{s}$ that is $t$-choosable? We show that the answer to this question is not always `yes' by explicitly constructing an infinite family of $3$-choosable graphs where a largest induced $2$-choosable subgraph of each graph in the family is of size at most $\frac{5n}{8}$.
Biased graphs with no two vertex-disjoint unbalanced cycles

Lovász has completely characterised the structure of graphs with no two vertex-disjoint cycles, while Slilaty has given a structural characterisation of graphs with no two vertex-disjoint odd cycles; his result is in fact more general, describing signed graphs with no two vertex-disjoint negative cycles. A biased graph is a graph with a distinguished set of cycles (called balanced) with the property that any theta subgraph does not contain exactly two balanced cycles. In this paper we characterise the structure of biased graphs with no two vertex-disjoint unbalanced cycles, answering a question by Zaslavsky and generalising the results of Lovász and Slilaty.
Ore-degree threshold for the square of a Hamiltonian cycle

A classic theorem of Dirac from 1952 states that every graph with minimum degree at least n/2 contains a Hamiltonian cycle. In 1963, Pósa conjectured that every graph with minimum degree at least 2n/3 contains the square of a Hamiltonian cycle. In 1960, Ore relaxed the degree condition in the Dirac's theorem by proving that every graph with $deg(u) + deg(v) \geq n$ for every $uv \notin E(G)$ contains a Hamiltonian cycle. Recently, Châu proved an Ore-type version of Pósa's conjecture for graphs on $n\geq n_0$ vertices using the regularity--blow-up method; consequently the $n_0$ is very large (involving a tower function). Here we present another proof that avoids the use of the regularity lemma. Aside from the fact that our proof holds for much smaller $n_0$, we believe that our method of proof will be of independent interest.
A new characterization of $P_k$-free graphs

The class of graphs that do not contain an induced path on $k$ vertices, $P_k$-free graphs, plays a prominent role in algorithmic graph theory. This motivates the search for special structural properties of $P_k$-free graphs, including alternative characterizations.
Let $G$ be a connected $P_k$-free graph, $k \ge 4$. We show that $G$ admits a connected dominating set whose induced subgraph is either $P_{k-2}$-free, or isomorphic to $P_{k-2}$. Surprisingly, it turns out that every minimum connected dominating set of $G$ has this property.
This yields a new characterization for $P_k$-free graphs: a graph $G$ is $P_k$-free if and only if each connected induced subgraph of $G$ has a connected dominating set whose induced subgraph is either $P_{k-2}$-free, or isomorphic to $C_k$. This improves and generalizes several previous results; the particular case of $k=7$ solves a problem posed by van 't Hof and Paulusma [A new characterization of $P_6$-free graphs, COCOON 2008].
In the second part of the paper, we present an efficient algorithm that, given a connected graph $G$ on $n$ vertices and $m$ edges, computes a connected dominating set $X$ of $G$ with the following property: for the minimum $k$ such that $G$ is $P_k$-free, the subgraph induced by $X$ is $P_{k-2}$-free or isomorphic to $P_{k-2}$.
As an application our results, we prove that Hypergraph 2-Colorability, an NP-complete problem in general, can be solved in polynomial time for hypergraphs whose vertex-hyperedge incidence graph is $P_7$-free.
Analyzing Cascading Failures in Smart Grids under Random and Targeted Attacks

We model smart grids as complex interdependent networks, and study targeted attacks on smart grids for the first time. A smart grid consists of two networks: the power network and the communication network, interconnected by edges. Occurrence of failures (attacks) in one network triggers failures in the other network, and propagates in cascades across the networks. Such cascading failures can result in disintegration of either (or both) of the networks. Earlier works considered only random failures. In practical situations, an attacker is more likely to compromise nodes selectively.
We study cascading failures in smart grids, where an attacker selectively compromises the nodes with probabilities proportional to their degrees; high degree nodes are compromised with higher probability. We mathematically analyze the sizes of the giant components of the networks under targeted attacks, and compare the results with the corresponding sizes under random attacks. We show that networks disintegrate faster for targeted attacks compared to random attacks. A targeted attack on a small fraction of high degree nodes disintegrates one or both of the networks, whereas both the networks contain giant components for random attack on the same fraction of nodes.

Let $G$ be a bipartite graph, and let $H$ be a bipartite graph with a fixed bipartition $(B_H,W_H)$. We consider three different, natural ways of forbidding $H$ as an induced subgraph in $G$. First, $G$ is $H$-free if it does not contain $H$ as an induced subgraph. Second, $G$ is strongly $H$-free if $G$ is $H$-free or else has no bipartition $(B_G,W_G)$ with $B_H\subseteq B_G$ and $W_H\subseteq W_G$. Third, $G$ is weakly $H$-free if $G$ is $H$-free or else has at least one bipartition $(B_G,W_G)$ with $B_H\not\subseteq B_G$ or $W_H\not\subseteq W_G$. Lozin and Volz characterized all bipartite graphs $H$ for which the class of strongly $H$-free bipartite graphs has bounded clique-width. We extend their result by giving complete classifications for the other two variants of $H$-freeness.

The generalized Fibonacci cube $Q_d(f)$ is the subgraph of the $d$-cube $Q_d$ induced on the set of all strings of length $d$ that do not contain $f$ as a substring. It is proved that if $Q_d(f) \cong Q_d(f')$ then $|f|=|f'|$. The key tool to prove this result is a result of Guibas and Odlyzko about the autocorrelation polynomial associated to a binary string. It is also proved that there exist pairs of strings $f, f'$ such that $Q_d(f) \cong Q_d(f')$, where $|f| \ge \frac{2}{3}(d+1)$ and $f'$ cannot be obtained from $f$ by its reversal or binary complementation. Strings $f$ and $f'$ with $|f|=|f'|=d-1$ for which $Q_d(f) \cong Q_d(f')$ are characterized.
The majority game with an arbitrary majority

The $k$-majority game is played with $n$ numbered balls, each coloured with one of two colours. It is given that there are at least $k$ balls of the majority colour, where $k$ is a fixed integer greater than $n/2$. On each turn the player selects two balls to compare, and it is revealed whether they are of the same colour; the player's aim is to determine a ball of the majority colour. It has been correctly stated by Aigner that the minimum number of comparisons necessary to guarantee success is $2(n-k) - B(n-k)$, where $B(m)$ is the weight of the binary expansion of $m$. However his proof contains an error. We give an alternative proof of this result, which generalizes an argument of Saks and Werman.

Let $G$ and $H$ be $k$-graphs ($k$-uniform hypergraphs); then a perfect $H$-packing in $G$ is a collection of vertex-disjoint copies of $H$ in $G$ which together cover every vertex of $G$. For any fixed $H$ let $δ(H, n)$ be the minimum $δ$ such that any $k$-graph $G$ on $n$ vertices with minimum codegree $δ(G) \geq δ$ contains a perfect $H$-packing. The problem of determining $δ(H, n)$ has been widely studied for graphs (i.e. $2$-graphs), but little is known for $k \geq 3$. Here we determine the asymptotic value of $δ(H, n)$ for all complete $k$-partite $k$-graphs $H$, as well as a wide class of other $k$-partite $k$-graphs. In particular, these results provide an asymptotic solution to a question of Rödl and Ruciński on the value of $δ(H, n)$ when $H$ is a loose cycle. We also determine asymptotically the codegree threshold needed to guarantee an $H$-packing covering all but a constant number of vertices of $G$ for any complete $k$-partite $k$-graph $H$.

Given a set $X$, a collection $\mathcal{F}\subseteq\mathcal{P}(X)$ is said to be $k$-Sperner if it does not contain a chain of length $k+1$ under set inclusion and it is saturated if it is maximal with respect to this property. Gerbner et al. conjectured that, if $|X|$ is sufficiently large with respect to $k$, then the minimum size of a saturated $k$-Sperner system $\mathcal{F}\subseteq\mathcal{P}(X)$ is $2^{k-1}$. We disprove this conjecture by showing that there exists $\varepsilon>0$ such that for every $k$ and $|X| \geq n_0(k)$ there exists a saturated $k$-Sperner system $\mathcal{F}\subseteq\mathcal{P}(X)$ with cardinality at most $2^{(1-\varepsilon)k}$.
A collection $\mathcal{F}\subseteq \mathcal{P}(X)$ is said to be an oversaturated $k$-Sperner system if, for every $S\in\mathcal{P}(X)\setminus\mathcal{F}$, $\mathcal{F}\cup\{S\}$ contains more chains of length $k+1$ than $\mathcal{F}$. Gerbner et al. proved that, if $|X|\geq k$, then the smallest such collection contains between $2^{k/2-1}$ and $O\left(\frac{\log{k}}{k}2^k\right)$ elements. We show that if $|X|\geq k^2+k$, then the lower bound is best possible, up to a polynomial factor.

The notion of $SL_2$-tiling is a generalization of that of classical Coxeter-Conway frieze pattern. We classify doubly antiperiodic $SL_2$-tilings that contain a rectangular domain of positive integers. Every such $SL_2$-tiling corresponds to a pair of frieze patterns and a unimodular $2\times2$-matrix with positive integer coefficients. We relate this notion to triangulated $n$-gons in the Farey graph.
Forcing Posets with Large Dimension to Contain Large Standard Examples
The dimension of a poset $P$, denoted $\dim(P)$, is the least positive integer $d$ for which $P$ is the intersection of $d$ linear extensions of $P$. The maximum dimension of a poset $P$ with $|P|\le 2n+1$ is $n$, provided $n\ge2$, and this inequality is tight when $P$ contains the standard example $S_n$. However, there are posets with large dimension that do not contain the standard example $S_2$. Moreover, for each fixed $d\ge2$, if $P$ is a poset with $|P|\le 2n+1$ and $P$ does not contain the standard example $S_d$, then $\dim(P)=o(n)$. Also, for large $n$, there is a poset $P$ with $|P|=2n$ and $\dim(P)\ge (1-o(1))n$ such that the largest $d$ so that $P$ contains the standard example $S_d$ is $o(n)$. In this paper, we will show that for every integer $c\ge1$, there is an integer $f(c)=O(c^2)$ so that for large enough $n$, if $P$ is a poset with $|P|\le 2n+1$ and $\dim(P)\ge n-c$, then $P$ contains a standard example $S_d$ with $d\ge n-f(c)$. From below, we show that $f(c)=Ω(c^{4/3})$. On the other hand, we also prove an analogous result for fractional dimension, and in this setting $f(c)$ is linear in $c$. Here the result is best possible up to the value of the multiplicative constant.
Finite Products Sets and Minimally Almost Periodic Groups

We construct, in locally compact, second countable, amenable groups, sets with large density that fail to have certain combinatorial properties. For the property of being a shift of a set of measurable recurrence we show that this is possible when the group does not have cocompact von Neumann kernel. For the stronger property of being piecewise-syndetic we show that this is always possible.
For minimally almost periodic, locally compact, second countable, amenable groups, we prove that any dilation of a positive density set by an open neighborhood of the identity contains a set of measurable recurrence, and that the same result holds, up to a shift, when the von Neumann kernel is cocompact. This leads to a trichotomy for locally compact, second countable, amenable groups based on combinatorial properties of large sets. We also prove, using a two-sided Furstenberg correspondence principle, that any two-sided dilation of a positive density set contains a two-sided finite products set.
Characterizing Block Graphs in Terms of their Vertex-Induced Partitions
Given a finite connected simple graph $G=(V,E)$ with vertex set $V$ and edge set $E\subseteq \binom{V}{2}$, we will show that
$1.$ the (necessarily unique) smallest block graph with vertex set $V$ whose edge set contains $E$ is uniquely determined by the $V$-indexed family ${\bf P}_G:=\big(π_0(G^{(v)})\big)_{v \in V}$ of the various partitions $π_0(G^{(v)})$ of the set $V$ into the set of connected components of the graph $G^{(v)}:=(V,\{e\in E: v\notin e\})$,
$2.$ the edge set of this block graph coincides with set of all $2$-subsets $\{u,v\}$ of $V$ for which $u$ and $v$ are, for all $w\in V-\{u,v\}$, contained in the same connected component of $G^{(w)}$,
$3.$ and an arbitrary $V$-indexed family ${\bf P}p=({\bf p}_v)_{v \in V}$ of partitions $π_v$ of the set $V$ is of the form ${\bf P}p={\bf P}p_G$ for some connected simple graph $G=(V,E)$ with vertex set $V$ as above if and only if, for any two distinct elements $u,v\in V$, the union of the set in ${\bf p}_v$ that contains $u$ and the set in ${\bf p}_u$ that contains $v$ coincides with the set $V$, and $\{v\}\in {\bf p}_v$ holds for all $v \in V$.
As well as being of inherent interest to the theory of block graphs, these facts are also useful in the analysis of compatible decompositions and block realizations of finite metric spaces.

We examine sets of lines in PG(d,F) meeting each hyperplane in a generator set of points. We prove that such a set has to contain at least 1.5d lines if the field F has more than 1.5d elements, and at least 2d-1 lines if the field F is algebraically closed. We show that suitable 2d-1 lines constitute such a set (if |F| > or = 2d-1), proving that the lower bound is tight over algebraically closed fields. At last, we will see that the strong (s,A) subspace designs constructed by Guruswami and Kopparty have better (smaller) parameter A than one would think at first sight.
S-crucial and bicrucial permutations with respect to squares
A permutation is square-free if it does not contain two consecutive factors of length two or more that are order-isomorphic. A permutation is bicrucial with respect to squares if it is square-free but any extension of it to the right or to the left by any element gives a permutation that is not square-free.
Bicrucial permutations with respect to squares were studied by Avgustinovich et al., who proved that there exist bicrucial permutations of lengths $8k+1, 8k+5, 8k+7$ for $k\ge 1$. It was left as open questions whether bicrucial permutations of even length, or such permutations of length $8k+3$ exist. In this paper, we provide an encoding of orderings which allows us, using the constraint solver Minion, to show that bicrucial permutations of even length exist, and the smallest such permutations are of length 32. To show that 32 is the minimum length in question, we establish a result on left-crucial (that is, not extendable to the left) square-free permutations which begin with three elements in monotone order. Also, we show that bicrucial permutations of length $8k+3$ exist for $k=2,3$ and they do not exist for $k=1$.
Further, we generalise the notions of right-crucial, left-crucial, and bicrucial permutations studied in the literature in various contexts, by introducing the notion of $P$-crucial permutations that can be extended to the notion of $P$-crucial words. In S-crucial permutations, a particular case of $P$-crucial permutations, we deal with permutations that avoid prohibitions, but whose extensions in any position contain a prohibition. We show that S-crucial permutations exist with respect to squares, and minimal such permutations are of length 17.
Finally, using our software, we generate much of relevant data showing, for example, that there are 162,190,472 bicrucial square-free permutations of length 19.
Hilbert Functions and the Finite Degree Zariski Closure in Finite Field Combinatorial Geometry

The polynomial method has been used recently to obtain many striking results in combinatorial geometry. In this paper, we use affine Hilbert functions to obtain an estimation theorem in finite field geometry. The most natural way to state the theorem is via a sort of bounded degree Zariski closure operation: given a set, we consider all polynomials of some bounded degree vanishing on that set, and then the common zeros of these polynomials. For example, the degree d closure of d + 1 points on a line will contain the whole line, as any polynomial of degree at most d vanishing on the d + 1 points must vanish on the line. Our result is a bound on the size of a finite degree closure of a given set. Finally, we adapt our use of Hilbert functions to the method of multiplicities.
Non-planar extensions of subdivisions of planar graphs

Almost $4$-connectivity is a weakening of $4$-connectivity which allows for vertices of degree three. In this paper we prove the following theorem. Let $G$ be an almost $4$-connected triangle-free planar graph, and let $H$ be an almost $4$-connected non-planar graph such that $H$ has a subgraph isomorphic to a subdivision of $G$. Then there exists a graph $G'$ such that $G'$ is isomorphic to a minor of $H$, and either
(i) $G'=G+uv$ for some vertices $u,v\in V(G)$ such that no facial cycle of $G$ contains both $u$ and $v$, or
(ii) $G'=G+u_1v_1+u_2v_2$ for some distinct vertices $u_1,u_2,v_1,v_2\in V(G)$ such that $u_1,u_2,v_1,v_2$ appear on some facial cycle of $G$ in the order listed.
This is a lemma to be used in other papers. In fact, we prove a more general theorem, where we relax the connectivity assumptions, do not assume that $G$ is planar, and consider subdivisions rather than minors. Instead of face boundaries we work with a collection of cycles that cover every edge twice and have pairwise connected intersection. Finally, we prove a version of this result that applies when $G\backslash X$ is planar for some set $X\subseteq V(G)$ of size at most $k$, but $H\backslash Y$ is non-planar for every set $Y\subseteq V(H)$ of size at most $k$.
Powers of Hamilton cycles in pseudorandom graphs

We study the appearance of powers of Hamilton cycles in pseudorandom graphs, using the following comparatively weak pseudorandomness notion. A graph $G$ is $(\varepsilon,p,k,\ell)$-pseudorandom if for all disjoint $X$ and $Y\subset V(G)$ with $|X|\ge\varepsilon p^kn$ and $|Y|\ge\varepsilon p^\ell n$ we have $e(X,Y)=(1\pm\varepsilon)p|X||Y|$. We prove that for all $β>0$ there is an $\varepsilon>0$ such that an $(\varepsilon,p,1,2)$-pseudorandom graph on $n$ vertices with minimum degree at least $βpn$ contains the square of a Hamilton cycle. In particular, this implies that $(n,d,λ)$-graphs with $λ\ll d^{5/2 }n^{-3/2}$ contain the square of a Hamilton cycle, and thus a triangle factor if $n$ is a multiple of $3$. This improves on a result of Krivelevich, Sudakov and Szabó [Triangle factors in sparse pseudo-random graphs, Combinatorica 24 (2004), no. 3, 403--426].
We also extend our result to higher powers of Hamilton cycles and establish corresponding counting versions.

This paper addresses the following question for a given graph $H$: what is the minimum number $f(H)$ such that every graph with average degree at least $f(H)$ contains $H$ as a minor? Due to connections with Hadwiger's Conjecture, this question has been studied in depth when $H$ is a complete graph. Kostochka and Thomason independently proved that $f(K_t)=ct\sqrt{\ln t}$. More generally, Myers and Thomason determined $f(H)$ when $H$ has a super-linear number of edges. We focus on the case when $H$ has a linear number of edges. Our main result, which complements the result of Myers and Thomason, states that if $H$ has $t$ vertices and average degree $d$ at least some absolute constant, then $f(H)\leq 3.895\sqrt{\ln d}\,t$. Furthermore, motivated by the case when $H$ has small average degree, we prove that if $H$ has $t$ vertices and $q$ edges, then $f(H) \leq t+6.291q$ (where the coefficient of 1 in the $t$ term is best possible).
