Abaci structures of $(s,ms\pm1)$-core partitions
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 24, no. 1 (2017), Article P1.5 • View PublicationBIB
We develop a geometric approach to the study of $(s,ms-1)$-core and $(s,ms+1)$-core partitions through the associated $ms$-abaci. This perspective yields new proofs for results of H. Xiong and A. Straub (originally proposed by T. Amdeberhan) on the enumeration of $(s, s+1)$ and $(s,ms-1)$-core partitions with distinct parts. It also enumerates the $(s, ms+1)$-cores with distinct parts. Furthermore, we calculate the weight of the $(s, ms-1,ms+1)$-core partition with the largest number of parts. Finally we use 2-core partitions to enumerate self-conjugate core partitions with distinct parts. The central idea is that the $ms$-abaci of maximal $(s,ms\pm1)$-cores can be built up from $s$-abaci of $(s,s\pm 1)$-cores in an elegant way.

Explicit expressions for the moments of the size of an (s,s+1)-core partition with distinct parts
Published in Adv. Appl. Math. 84, 1-7 (2017) • View PublicationBIB
For fixed s, the size of an (s, s+1)-core partition with distinct parts can be seen as a random variable X_s. Using computer-assisted methods, we derive formulas for the expectation, variance, and higher moments of X_s. Our results give good evidence that X_s is asymptotically normal.
On $(2k+1, 2k+3)$-core partitions with distinct parts
In this paper, we are mainly concerned with the enumeration of $(2k+1, 2k+3)$-core partitions with distinct parts. We derive the number and the largest size of such partitions, confirming two conjectures posed by Straub.

Core partitions into distinct parts and an analog of Euler's theorem
Published • View PublicationBIB
A special case of an elegant result due to Anderson proves that the number of $(s,s+1)$-core partitions is finite and is given by the Catalan number $C_s$. Amdeberhan recently conjectured that the number of $(s,s+1)$-core partitions into distinct parts equals the Fibonacci number $F_{s+1}$. We prove this conjecture by enumerating, more generally, $(s,ds-1)$-core partitions into distinct parts. We do this by relating them to certain tuples of nested twin-free sets. As a by-product of our results, we obtain a bijection between partitions into distinct parts and partitions into odd parts, which preserves the perimeter (that is, the largest part plus the number of parts minus $1$). This simple but curious analog of Euler's theorem appears to be missing from the literature on partitions.

The Raney Numbers and $(s,s+1)$-Core Partitions
The Raney numbers $R_{p,r}(k)$ are a two-parameter generalization of the Catalan numbers. In this paper, we obtain a recurrence relation for the Raney numbers which is a generalization of the recurrence relation for the Catalan numbers. Using this recurrence relation, we confirm a conjecture posed by Amdeberhan concerning the enumeration of $(s,s+1)$-core partitions $λ$ with parts that are multiples of $p$. We then give a new combinatorial interpretation for the Raney numbers $R_{p+1,r+1}(k)$ with $0\leq r<p$ in terms of $(kp+r,kp+r+1)$-core partitions $λ$ with parts that are multiples of $p$.

Rational Shi tableaux and the skew length statistic
Published • View PublicationBIB
We define two refinements of the skew length statistic on simultaneous core partitions. The first one relies on hook lengths and is used to prove a refined version of the theorem stating that the skew length is invariant under conjugation of the core. The second one is equivalent to a generalisation of Shi tableaux to the rational level of Catalan combinatorics. These rational Shi tableaux encode dominant $p$-stable elements in the affine symmetric group. We prove that the rational Shi tableau is injective, that is, each dominant $p$-stable affine permutation is determined uniquely by its Shi tableau. Moreover, we provide a uniform generalisation of rational Shi tableaux to Weyl groups, and conjecture injectivity in the general case.
Numerical Sets, Core Partitions, and Integer Points in Polytopes
Published in Combinatorial and Additive Number Theory. II, 99-127, Springer Proc. Math. Stat., 220, Springer, Cham, 2017 • View PublicationBIB
We study a correspondence between numerical sets and integer partitions that leads to a bijection between simultaneous core partitions and the integer points of a certain polytope. We use this correspondence to prove combinatorial results about core partitions. For small values of a, we give formulas for the number of (a,b)-core partitions corresponding to numerical semigroups. We also study the number of partitions with a given hook set.

Core partitions with distinct parts
Published • View PublicationBIB
Simultaneous core partitions have attracted much attention since Anderson's work on the number of $(t_1,t_2)$-core partitions. In this paper we focus on simultaneous core partitions with distinct parts. The generating function of $t$-core partitions with distinct parts is obtained. We also prove the results on the number, the largest size and the average size of $(t, t + 1)$-core partitions. This gives a complete answer to a conjecture of Amdeberhan, which is partly and independently proved by Straub, Nath and Sellers, and Zaleski recently.

Explicit Expressions for the Variance and Higher Moments of the Size of a Simultaneous Core Partition and its Limiting Distribution
Jaclyn Anderson proved that if s and t are relatively prime positive integers, then there are exactly (s+t-1)!/(s!t!) partitions whose set of hook-lengths is disjoint from the set {s,t}. Drew Armstrong conjectured (and Paul Johnson, and a bit later, Victor Wang, proved) a beautiful expression for the average size, namely (s-1)(t-1)(s+t+1)/24 . In the present article, we go far beyond the average, and state absolutely certain expressions (but "officially" still conjectures) for the variance (showing in particular that it is rather large, and there is no "concentration about the mean"), and the third through the sixth moments. For the special case of (s,s+1)-core partitions, we go all the way to the 9th moment. We pose two challenges, and will be glad to donate 100 dollars each, to the OEIS foundation in honor of the first provers, regarding a "soft" and "global", yet rigorous, justification of our empirical approach, and for proving an intriguing conjecture about the limiting distribution. This version reports (thanks to Marko Thiel and Nathan Williams) that the second challenge mentioned above has been done by Paul Johnson (but not in two pages). A donation to the OEIS was made. The first challenge is still wide open.

Even $(\bar{s}, \bar{t})$-core partitions and self-associate characters of $\tilde{S}_n$
A partition is a $\bar{s}$-core if it is the result of removing all of the $s$-bars from a partition. We extend a method of Olsson and Bessenrodt to determine the number of even partitions that are simultaneously $\bar{s}$-core and $\bar{t}$-core. When $p$ and $q$ are distinct primes, this also determines the number of self-associate characters of $\tilde{S}_n$ that are simultaneosly defect 0 for $p$ and $q$.

Simultaneous core partitions: parameterizations and sums
Published in Electron. J. Combin. 23 (2016), no. 1, Paper 1.4, 34 pp • View PublicationBIB
Fix coprime $s,t\ge1$. We re-prove, without Ehrhart reciprocity, a conjecture of Armstrong (recently verified by Johnson) that the finitely many simultaneous $(s,t)$-cores have average size $\frac{1}{24}(s-1)(t-1)(s+t+1)$, and that the subset of self-conjugate cores has the same average (first shown by Chen--Huang--Wang). We similarly prove a recent conjecture of Fayers that the average weighted by an inverse stabilizer---giving the "expected size of the $t$-core of a random $s$-core"---is $\frac{1}{24}(s-1)(t^2-1)$. We also prove Fayers' conjecture that the analogous self-conjugate average is the same if $t$ is odd, but instead $\frac{1}{24}(s-1)(t^2+2)$ if $t$ is even. In principle, our explicit methods---or implicit variants thereof---extend to averages of arbitrary powers. The main new observation is that the stabilizers appearing in Fayers' conjectures have simple formulas in Johnson's $z$-coordinates parameterization of $(s,t)$-cores. We also observe that the $z$-coordinates extend to parameterize general $t$-cores. As an example application with $t := s+d$, we count the number of $(s,s+d,s+2d)$-cores for coprime $s,d\ge1$, verifying a recent conjecture of Amdeberhan and Leven.

Rank complement of rational Dyck paths and conjugation of $(m,n)$-core partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a coprime pair $(m,n)$ of positive integers, rational Catalan numbers $\frac{1}{m+n} \binom{m+n}{m,n}$ counts two combinatorial objects:rational $(m,n)$-Dyck paths are lattice paths in the $m\times n$ rectangle that never go below the diagonal; $(m,n)$-cores are partitions with no hook length equal to $m$ or $n$.Anderson established a bijection between $(m,n)$-Dyck paths and $(m,n)$-cores. We define a new transformation, called rank complement, on rational Dyck paths. We show that rank complement corresponds to conjugation of $(m,n)$-cores under Anderson's bijection. This leads to: i) a new approach to characterizing $n$-cores; ii) a simple approach for counting the number of self-conjugate $(m,n)$-cores; iii) a proof of the equivalence of two conjectured combinatorial sum formulas, one over rational $(m,n)$-Dyck paths and the other over $(m,n)$-cores, for rational Catalan polynomials.

$(s,t)$-cores: a weighted version of Armstrong's conjecture
Published in Electronic J. Combin. 23 (2016) #P4.32 • View PublicationBIB
The study of core partitions has been very active in recent years, with the study of $(s,t)$-cores - partitions which are both $s$- and $t$-cores - playing a prominent role. A conjecture of Armstrong, proved recently by Johnson, says that the average size of an $(s,t)$-core, when $s$ and $t$ are coprime positive integers, is $\frac1{24}(s-1)(t-1)(s+t-1)$. Armstrong also conjectured that the same formula gives the average size of a self-conjugate $(s,t)$-core; this was proved by Chen, Huang and Wang. In the present paper, we develop the ideas from the author's paper [J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 118 (2011) 1525-1539] studying actions of affine symmetric groups on the set of $s$-cores in order to give variants of Armstrong's conjectures in which each $(s,t)$-core is weighted by the reciprocal of the order of its stabiliser under a certain group action. Informally, this weighted average gives the expected size of the $t$-core of a random $s$-core.

Lattice points and simultaneous core partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We observe that for a and b relatively prime, the "abacus construction" identifies the set of simultaneous (a,b)-core partitions with lattice points in a rational simplex. Furthermore, many statistics on (a,b)-cores are piecewise polynomial functions on this simplex. We apply these results to rational Catalan combinatorics. Using Ehrhart theory, we reprove Anderson's theorem that there are (a+b-1)!/a!b! simultaneous (a,b)-cores, and using Euler-Maclaurin theory we prove Armstrong's conjecture that the average size of an (a,b)-core is (a+b+1)(a-1)(b-1)/24. Our methods also give new derivations of analogous formulas for the number and average size of self-conjugate (a,b)-cores. We conjecture a unimodality result for q rational Catalan numbers, and make preliminary investigations in applying these methods to the (q,t)-symmetry and specialization conjectures. We prove these conjectures for low degree terms and when a=3, connecting them to the Catalan hyperplane arrangement and quadratic permutation statistics.

Symmetry in maximal $(s-1,s+1)$ cores
We explain a "curious symmetry" for maximal $(s-1,s+1)$-core partitions first observed by T. Amdeberhan and E. Leven. Specifically, using the $s$-abacus, we show such partitions have empty $s$-core and that their $s$-quotient is comprised of 2-cores. This imposes strong conditions on the partition structure, and implies both the Amdeberhan-Leven result and additional symmetry. We also find a more general family that exhibits these symmetries.

A conjecture of Han on 3-cores and modular forms
Published • View PublicationBIB
In his study of Nekrasov-Okounkov type formulas on "partition theoretic" expressions for families of infinite products, Han discovered seemingly unrelated $q$-series that are supported on precisely the same terms as these infinite products. In earlier work with Ono, Han proved one instance of this occurrence that exhibited a relation between numbers $a(n)$ that are given in terms of hook lengths of partitions, with numbers $b(n)$ that equal the number of 3-core partitions of $n$. Recently Han revisited the $q$-series with coefficients $a(n)$ and $b(n)$, and numerically found a third $q$-series whose coefficients appear to be supported on the same terms. Here we prove Han's Conjecture about this third series by proving a general theorem about this phenomenon.

On the largest size of $(t,t+1,..., t+p)$-core partitions
In this paper we prove that Amdeberhan's conjecture on the largest size of $(t, t+1, t+2)$-core partitions is true. We also show that the number of $(t, t + 1, t + 2)$-core partitions with the largest size is $1$ or $2$ based on the parity of $t$. More generally, the largest size of $(t,t+1,..., t+p)$-core partitions and the number of such partitions with the largest size are determined.

The number of simultaneous core partitions
Amdeberhan conjectured that the number of $(t,t+1, t+2)$-core partitions is $\sum_{0\leq k\leq [\frac{t}{2}]}\frac{1}{k+1}\binom{t}{2k}\binom{2k}{k}$. In this paper, we obtain the generating function of the numbers $f_t$ of $(t, t + 1, ..., t + p)$-core partitions. In particular, this verifies that Amdeberhan's conjecture is true. We also prove that the number of $(t_1,t_2,..., t_m)$-core partitions is finite if and only if gcd$(t_1,t_2,..., t_m)=1,$ which extends Anderson's result on the finiteness of the number of $(t_1,t_2)$-core partitions for coprime positive integers $t_1$ and $t_2$ and thus rediscover a result of Keith and Nath with a different proof.

When Does the Set of $(a, b, c)$-Core Partitions Have a Unique Maximal Element?
Published • View PublicationBIB
In 2007, Olsson and Stanton gave an explicit form for the largest $(a, b)$-core partition, for any relatively prime positive integers $a$ and $b$, and asked whether there exists an $(a, b)$-core that contains all other $(a, b)$-cores as subpartitions; this question was answered in the affirmative first by Vandehey and later by Fayers independently. In this paper we investigate a generalization of this question, which was originally posed by Fayers: for what triples of positive integers $(a, b, c)$ does there exist an $(a, b, c)$-core that contains all other $(a, b, c)$-cores as subpartitions? We completely answer this question when $a$, $b$, and $c$ are pairwise relatively prime; we then use this to generalize the result of Olsson and Stanton.

Armstrong's Conjecture for $(k, mk + 1)$-Core Partitions
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics 47, 54-67 (2015) • View PublicationBIB
A conjecture of Armstrong states that if $\gcd (a, b) = 1$, then the average size of an $(a, b)$-core partition is $(a - 1)(b - 1)(a + b + 1) / 24$. Recently, Stanley and Zanello used a recursive argument to verify this conjecture when $a = b - 1$. In this paper we use a variant of their method to establish Armstrong's conjecture in the more general setting where $a$ divides $b - 1$.
