Chain Tutte polynomials
The Tutte polynomial and Derksen's $\mathcal{G}$-invariant are the universal deletion-contraction and valuative matroid and polymatroid invariants, respectively. There are only a handful of well known invariants (like the matroid Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials) between (in terms of fineness) the Tutte polynomial and Derksen's $\mathcal{G}$-invariant. The aim of this study is to define a spectrum of generalized Tutte polynomials to fill the gap between the Tutte polynomial and Derksen's $\mathcal{G}$-invariant. These polynomials are built by taking repeated convolution products of universal Tutte characters studied by Dupont, Fink, and Moci and using the framework of Ardila and Sanchez for studying valuative invariants. We develop foundational aspects of these polynomials by showing they are valuative on generalized permutahedra and present a generalized deletion-contraction formula. We apply these results on chain Tutte polynomials to obtain formulas for the Möbius polynomial, the opposite characteristic polynomial, a generalized Möbius polynomial, Ford's expected codimension of a matroid variety, and Derksen's $\mathcal{G}$-invariant.

Types of embedded graphs and their Tutte polynomials
Published in Mathematical Proceedings of the Cambridge Philosophical Society, 169 (2020) 255-297 • View PublicationBIB
We take an elementary and systematic approach to the problem of extending the Tutte polynomial to the setting of embedded graphs. Four notions of embedded graphs arise naturally when considering deletion and contraction operations on graphs on surfaces. We give a description of each class in terms of coloured ribbon graphs. We then identify a universal deletion-contraction invariant (i.e., a `Tutte polynomial') for each class. We relate these to graph polynomials in the literature, including the Bollobás--Riordan, Krushkal, and Las Vergnas polynomials, and give state-sum formulations, duality relations, deleton-contraction relations, and quasi-tree expansions for each of them.

Deletion-Contraction and the Surface Tutte Polynomial
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we unify two families of topological Tutte polynomials. The first family is that coming from the surface Tutte polynomial, a polynomial that arises in the theory of local flows and tensions. The second family arises from the canonical Tutte polynomials of Hopf algebras. Each family includes the Las Vergnas, Bollobás-Riordan, and Krushkal polynomials. As a consequence we determine a deletion-contraction definition of the surface Tutte polynomial and recursion relations for the number of local flows and tensions in an embedded graph.

A deletion-contraction long exact sequence for chromatic symmetric homology
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics 115 (2024) • View PublicationBIB
Crew and Spirklt generalize Stanley's chromatic symmetric function to vertex-weighted graphs. One of the primary motivations for extending the chromatic symmetric function to vertex-weighted graphs is the existence of a deletion-contraction relation in this setting, which, as known, holds for the chromatic polynomial, but doesn't hold for the chromatic symmetric function. In this paper we find a categorification of their new invariant extending the definition of chromatic symmetric homology to vertex-weighted graphs. We prove the existence of a deletion-contraction long exact sequence for chromatic symmetric homology which lifts the deletion-contraction relation that holds for the extension of Crew and Spirklt. Moreover, the new categorification gives a useful computational tool and allow us to answer two questions left open by Chandler, Sazdanovic, Stella and Yip. In particular, we prove that, for a graph G with $n$ vertices, the maximal index with nonzero homology is not greater that $n$ - 1. Moreover, we show that the homology is non-trivial for all the indices between the minimum and the maximum with this property.

Acyclic Orientations and the Chromatic Polynomial of Signed Graphs
We present a new correspondence between acyclic orientations and coloring of a signed graph (symmetric graph). Goodall et al. introduced a bivariate chromatic polynomial $χ_G(k,l)$ that counts the number of signed colorings using colors $0,\pm1,\dots,\pm k$ along with $l-1$ symmetric colors $0_1,\dots,0_{l-1}$. We show that the evaluation of the bivariate chromatic polynomial $|χ_G(-1,2)|$ is equal to the number of acyclic orientations of the signed graph modulo the equivalence relation generated by swapping sources and sinks. We present three proofs of this fact, a proof using toric hyperplane arrangements, a proof using deletion-contraction, and a direct proof.

Matroid schemes and geometric posets
The intersection data of a hyperplane arrangement is described by a geometric lattice, or equivalently a simple matroid. There is a rich interplay between this combinatorial structure and the topology of the arrangement complement. In this paper, we characterize the combinatorial structure underlying an abelian arrangement (such as a toric or elliptic arrangement) by defining a class of geometric posets and a generalization of matroids called matroid schemes. The intersection data of an abelian arrangement is encoded in a geometric poset, and we prove that a geometric poset is equivalent to a simple matroid scheme. We lay foundations for the theory of matroid schemes, discussing rank, flats, and independence. We also extend the definition of the Tutte polynomial to this setting and prove that it satisfies a deletion-contraction recurrence.

Simplicial chromatic polynomials as Hilbert series of Stanley--Reisner rings
We find families of simplicial complexes where the simplicial chromatic polynomials defined by Cooper--de Silva--Sazdanovic \cite{CdSS} are Hilbert series of Stanley--Reisner rings of auxiliary simplicial complexes. As a result, such generalized chromatic polynomials are determined by $h$-vectors of auxiliary simplicial complexes. In addition to generalizing related results on graphs and matroids, the simplicial complexes used allow us to consider problems that are not necessarily analogues of those considered for graphs. Some examples include supports of cyclotomic polynomials, log concavity properties of a polynomial or some translate of the polynomial, and symmetry relations between a polynomial and its reciprocal polynomial. If the $h$-vectors involed have sufficiently large entries, the Hilbert series are Hilbert polynomials of some $k$-algebra. As a consequence of connections between $h$-vectors and simplicial chromatic polynomials, we also find simplicial complexes whose $h$-vectors are determined by addition-contraction relations of simplicial complexes analogous to deletion-contraction relations of graphs. The constructions used involve generalizations of relations Euler characteristics of configuration spaces and chromatic polynomials of graphs.
Marked graphs and the chromatic symmetric function
Published • View PublicationBIB
The main result of this paper is the introduction of marked graphs and the marked graph polynomials ($M$-polynomial) associated with them. These polynomials can be defined via a deletion-contraction operation. These polynomials are a generalization of the $W$-polynomial introduced by Noble and Welsh and a specialization of the $\mathbf{V}$-polynomial introduced by Ellis-Monaghan and Moffatt. In addition, we describe an important specialization of the $M$-polynomial which we call the $D$-polynomial. Furthermore, we give an efficient algorithm for computing the chromatic symmetric function of a graph in the \emph{star-basis} of symmetric functions. As an application of these tools, we prove that proper trees of diameter at most 5 can be reconstructed from its chromatic symmetric function.
Deletion-contraction for a unified Laplacian and applications
Published • View PublicationBIB
We define a graph Laplacian with vertex weights in addition to the more classical edge weights, which unifies the combinatorial Laplacian and the normalised Laplacian. Moreover, we give a combinatorial interpretation for the coefficients of the weighted Laplacian characteristic polynomial in terms of weighted spanning forests and use this to prove a deletion-contraction relation. We prove various interlacing theorems relating to deletion and contraction, as well as to rectangular tilings, drawing on the work of Brooks, Smith, Stone and Tutte on square tilings. Additionally, we show that the weighted Laplacian also satisfies a vertex analogue of deletion-contraction. We give applications of weighted Laplacian eigenvalues to sparse cuts, independent sets and graph colouring, and establish new cases of a conjecture of Stanley on distinguishing nonisomorphic trees.

A Deletion-Contraction Relation for the DP Color Function
Published • View PublicationBIB
DP-coloring is a generalization of list coloring that was introduced in 2015 by Dvořák and Postle. The chromatic polynomial of a graph $G$, denoted $P(G,m)$, is equal to the number of proper $m$-colorings of $G$. A well-known tool for computing the chromatic polynomial of graph $G$ is the deletion-contraction formula which relates $P(G,m)$ to the chromatic polynomials of two smaller graphs. The DP color function of a graph $G$, denoted $P_{DP}(G,m)$, is a DP-coloring analogue of the chromatic polynomial, and $P_{DP}(G,m)$ is the minimum number of DP-colorings of $G$ over all possible $m$-fold covers. In this paper we present a deletion-contraction relation for the DP color function. To make this possible, we extend the definition of the DP color function to multigraphs. We also introduce the dual DP color function of a graph $G$, denoted $P^*_{DP}(G,m)$, which counts the maximum number of DP-colorings of $G$ over certain $m$-fold covers. We show how the dual DP color function along with our deletion-contraction relation yields a new general lower bound on the DP color function of a graph.

Express the number of spanning trees in term of degrees

It is well-known that the number of spanning trees, denoted by $τ(G)$, in a connected multi-graph $G$ can be calculated by the Matrix-Tree theorem and Tutte's deletion-contraction theorem. In this short note, we find an alternate method to compute $τ(G)$ by degrees of vertices.

A categorification for the signed chromatic polynomial
Published • View PublicationBIB
By coloring a signed graph by signed colors, one obtains the signed chromatic polynomial of the signed graph. For each signed graph we construct graded cohomology groups whose graded Euler characteristic yields the signed chromatic polynomial of the signed graph. We show that the cohomology groups satisfy a long exact sequence which corresponds to signed deletion-contraction rule. This work is motivated by Helme-Guizon and Rong's construction of the categorification for the chromatic polynomial of unsigned graphs.

Simulating Quantum Computations with Tutte Polynomials
Published in npj Quantum Information 7, 141 (2021) • View PublicationBIB
We establish a classical heuristic algorithm for exactly computing quantum probability amplitudes. Our algorithm is based on mapping output probability amplitudes of quantum circuits to evaluations of the Tutte polynomial of graphic matroids. The algorithm evaluates the Tutte polynomial recursively using the deletion-contraction property while attempting to exploit structural properties of the matroid. We consider several variations of our algorithm and present experimental results comparing their performance on two classes of random quantum circuits. Further, we obtain an explicit form for Clifford circuit amplitudes in terms of matroid invariants and an alternative efficient classical algorithm for computing the output probability amplitudes of Clifford circuits.
A Vertex-Weighted Tutte Symmetric Function, and Constructing Graphs with Equal Chromatic Symmetric Function
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics (2021): P2-1 • View PublicationBIB
This paper has two main parts. First, we consider the Tutte symmetric function $XB$, a generalization of the chromatic symmetric function. We introduce a vertex-weighted version of $XB$ and show that this function admits a deletion-contraction relation. We also demonstrate that the vertex-weighted $XB$ admits spanning-tree and spanning-forest expansions generalizing those of the Tutte polynomial by connecting $XB$ to other graph functions. Second, we give several methods for constructing nonisomorphic graphs with equal chromatic and Tutte symmetric functions, and use them to provide specific examples.

K-theoretic Tutte polynomials of morphisms of matroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
We generalize the Tutte polynomial of a matroid to a morphism of matroids via the K-theory of flag varieties. We introduce two different generalizations, and demonstrate that each has its own merits, where the trade-off is between the ease of combinatorics and geometry. One generalization recovers the Las Vergnas Tutte polynomial of a morphism of matroids, which admits a corank-nullity formula and a deletion-contraction recursion. The other generalization does not, but better reflects the geometry of flag varieties.
Arborescences of Covering Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
An arborescence of a directed graph $Γ$ is a spanning tree directed toward a particular vertex $v$. The arborescences of a graph rooted at a particular vertex may be encoded as a polynomial $A_v(Γ)$ representing the sum of the weights of all such arborescences. The arborescences of a graph and the arborescences of a covering graph $\tildeΓ$ are closely related. Using voltage graphs as means to construct arbitrary regular covers, we derive a novel explicit formula for the ratio of $A_v(Γ)$ to the sum of arborescences in the lift $A_{\tilde{v}}(\tildeΓ)$ in terms of the determinant of Chaiken's voltage Laplacian matrix, a generalization of the Laplacian matrix. Chaiken's results on the relationship between the voltage Laplacian and vector fields on $Γ$ are reviewed, and we provide a new proof of Chaiken's results via a deletion-contraction argument.

A Deletion-Contraction Relation for the Chromatic Symmetric Function
Published • View PublicationBIB
We extend the definition of the chromatic symmetric function $X_G$ to include graphs $G$ with a vertex-weight function $w : V(G) \rightarrow \mathbb{N}$. We show how this provides the chromatic symmetric function with a natural deletion-contraction relation analogous to that of the chromatic polynomial. Using this relation we derive new properties of the chromatic symmetric function, and we give alternate proofs of many fundamental properties of $X_G$.

Deletion-contraction triangles for Hausel-Proudfoot varieties
Published • View PublicationBIB
To a graph, Hausel and Proudfoot associate two complex manifolds, B and D, which behave, respectively like moduli of local systems on a Riemann surface, and moduli of Higgs bundles. For instance, B is a moduli space of microlocal sheaves, which generalize local systems, and D carries the structure of a complex integrable system. We show the Euler characteristics of these varieties count spanning subtrees of the graph, and the point-count over a finite field for B is a generating polynomial for spanning subgraphs. This polynomial satisfies a deletion-contraction relation, which we lift to a deletion-contraction exact triangle for the cohomology of B. There is a corresponding triangle for D. Finally, we prove B and D are diffeomorphic, that the diffeomorphism carries the weight filtration on the cohomology of B to the perverse Leray filtration on the cohomology of D, and that all these structures are compatible with the deletion-contraction triangles.

Set of independencies and Tutte polynomial of matroids over a domain
In this work, we study matroids over a domain and several classical combinatorial and algebraic invariants related. We define their Grothendieck-Tutte polynomial $T_{\mathcal{M}}(x,y)$, extending the definition given by Fink and Moci in 2016, and we show that such polynomial has the classical deletion-contraction property. Moreover, we study the set of independencies for a realizable matroid over a domain, generalizing the definition of \emph{poset of torsions} $Gr(\mathcal{M})$ given by the second author in 2017. This is a union of identical simplicial posets as for (quasi-)arithmetic matroids. The new notions harmonize naturally through the face module $N_\mathcal{M}$ of the matroid over a domain. Whenever $Gr(\mathcal{M})$ is a finite poset, the Hilbert series $N_\mathcal{M}(t)$ of its face module is a specialization of the Tutte polynomial $T_{\mathcal{M}}(x,y)$. Further, for arrangements of codimension-one abelian subvarities of an elliptic curve admitting complex multiplication, we extend certain results of Bibby and we provide an algebraic interpretation of the elliptic Tutte polynomial.
