Normally ordered forms of powers of differential operators and their combinatorics
Published • View PublicationBIB
We investigate the combinatorics of the general formulas for the powers of the operator $h \partial^k$, where $h$ is a central element of a ring and $\partial$ is a differential operator. This generalizes previous work on the powers of operators $h \partial$. New formulas for the generalized Stirling numbers are obtained.
Periodic Pólya urns and an application to Young tableaux
Published in Leibniz International Proceedings in Informatics (LIPIcs), 29th International Conference on Probabilistic, Combinatorial and Asymptotic Methods for the Analysis of Algorithms (AofA 2018), pp.1-12 • View PublicationBIB
P{ó}lya urns are urns where at each unit of time a ball is drawn and is replaced with some other balls according to its colour. We introduce a more general model: The replacement rule depends on the colour of the drawn ball and the value of the time (mod p). We discuss some intriguing properties of the differential operators associated to the generating functions encoding the evolution of these urns. The initial partial differential equation indeed leads to ordinary linear differential equations and we prove that the moment generating functions are D-finite. For a subclass, we exhibit a closed form for the corresponding generating functions (giving the exact state of the urns at time n). When the time goes to infinity, we show that these periodic P{ó}lya urns follow a rich variety of behaviours: their asymptotic fluctuations are described by a family of distributions, the generalized Gamma distributions, which can also be seen as powers of Gamma distributions. En passant, we establish some enumerative links with other combinatorial objects, and we give an application for a new result on the asymptotics of Young tableaux: This approach allows us to prove that the law of the lower right corner in a triangular Young tableau follows asymptotically a product of generalized Gamma distributions.

Counting Matchings via Capacity Preserving Operators
Published • View PublicationBIB
The notion of the capacity of a polynomial was introduced by Gurvits around 2005, originally to give drastically simplified proofs of the Van der Waerden lower bound for permanents of doubly stochastic matrices and Schrijver's inequality for perfect matchings of regular bipartite graphs. Since this seminal work, the notion of capacity has been utilized to bound various combinatorial quantities and to give polynomial-time algorithms to approximate such quantities (e.g., the number of bases of a matroid). These types of results are often proven by giving bounds on how much a particular differential operator can change the capacity of a given polynomial. In this paper, we unify the theory surrounding such capacity preserving operators by giving tight capacity preservation bounds for all nondegenerate real stability preservers. We then use this theory to give a new proof of a recent result of Csikvári, which settled Friedland's lower matching conjecture.

Generalized Stirling Numbers I
We consider generalized Stirling numbers of the second kind $% S_{a,b,r}^{α_{s},β_{s},r_{s},p_{s}}\left( p,k\right) $, $% k=0,1,\ldots .rp+\sum_{s=2}^{L}r_{s}p_{s}$, where $a,b,α_{s},β_{s} $ are complex numbers, and $r,p,r_{s},p_{s}$ are non-negative integers given, $s=2,\ldots ,L$. (The case $a=1,b=0,r=1,r_{s}p_{s}=0$, corresponds to the standard Stirling numbers $S\left( p,k\right) $.) The numbers $% S_{a,b,r}^{α_{s},β_{s},r_{s},p_{s}}\left( p,k\right) $ are connected with a generalization of Eulerian numbers and polynomials we studied in previous works. This link allows us to propose (first, and then to prove, specially in the case $r=r_{s}=1$) several results involving our generalized Stirling numbers, including several families of new recurrences for Stirling numbers of the second kind. In a future work we consider the recurrence and the differential operator associated to the numbers $% S_{a,b,r}^{α_{s},β_{s},r_{s},p_{s}}\left( p,k\right) $.

Intersections of $ψ$ classes on Hassett Spaces for genus $0$ with all weights $\frac{1}{2}$
Published • View PublicationBIB
Hassett spaces are moduli spaces of weighted stable pointed curves. In this work, we consider such spaces of curves of genus $0$ with weights all $\frac{1}{2}$. These spaces are interesting as they are isomorphic to $\overline{M}_{0,n}$ but have different universal families and different intersection theory. We develop a closed formula for intersections of $ψ$-classes on such spaces. In our main result, we encode the formula for top intersections in a generating function obtained by applying a differential operator to the Witten-potential.

The rectangular representation of the double affine Hecke algebra via elliptic Schur-Weyl duality
Published in Published in IMRN, 2019 • View PublicationBIB
Given a module $M$ for the algebra $\mathcal{D}_{\mathtt{q}}(G)$ of quantum differential operators on $G$, and a positive integer $n$, we may equip the space $F_n^G(M)$ of invariant tensors in $V^{\otimes n}\otimes M$, with an action of the double affine Hecke algebra of type $A_{n-1}$. Here $G= SL_N$ or $GL_N$, and $V$ is the $N$-dimensional defining representation of $G$. In this paper we take $M$ to be the basic $\mathcal{D}_{\mathtt{q}}(G)$-module, i.e. the quantized coordinate algebra $M= \mathcal{O}_{\mathtt{q}}(G)$. We describe a weight basis for $F_n^G(\mathcal{O}_{\mathtt{q}}(G))$ combinatorially in terms of walks in the type $A$ weight lattice, and standard periodic tableaux, and subsequently identify $F_n^G(\mathcal{O}_{\mathtt{q}}(G))$ with the irreducible "rectangular representation" of height $N$ of the double affine Hecke algebra.

A New Approach to the $r$-Whitney Numbers by Using Combinatorial Differential Calculus
In the present article we introduce two new combinatorial interpretations of the $r$-Whitney numbers of the second kind obtained from the combinatorics of the differential operators associated to the grammar $G:=\{ y\rightarrow yx^{m}, x\rightarrow x\}$. By specializing $m=1$ we obtain also a new combinatorial interpretation of the $r$-Stirling numbers of the second kind. Again, by specializing to the case $r=0$ we introduce a new generalization of the Stirling number of the second kind and through them a binomial type family of polynomials that generalizes Touchard's. Moreover, we show several well-known identities involving the $r$-Dowling polynomials and the $r$-Whitney numbers using the combinatorial differential calculus. Finally we prove that the $r$-Dowling polynomials are a Sheffer family relative to the generalized Touchard binomial family, study their umbral inverses, and introduce $[m]$-Stirling numbers of the first kind. From the relation between umbral calculus and the Riordan matrices we give several new combinatorial identities involving the $r$-Whitney number of both kinds, Bernoulli and Euler polynomials.
Expansion of permutations as products of transpositions
We compute the number of ways a given permutation can be written as a product of exactly $k$ transpositions. We express this number as a linear combination of explicit geometric sequences, with coefficients which can be computed in many particular cases. Along the way we prove several symmetry properties for matrices associated with bipartite graphs, as well as some general (likely known) properties of Young diagrams. The methods involve linear algebra, enumeration of border strip tableau, and a differential operator on symmetric polynomials.

A Formula about W-operator and Its Application to Hurwitz Number
Published in Discrete Mathematics, 342(3), 715-722. Volume 342, Issue 3, March 2019, Pages 715-722 • View PublicationBIB
W-operators are differential operators on the polynomial ring. Mironov, Morosov and Natanzon construct the generalized Hurwitz numbers. They use the W-operator to prove a formula for the generating function of the generalized Hurwitz numbers. A special example of the W-operator is the cut-and-join operator. Goulden and Jackson use the cut-and-join operator to calculate the simple Hurwitz number. In this paper, we study the relation between W-operator W([d]) and the central elements in Sn. Based on the relation we find, we give another proof about a differential equation of the generating function of d-Hurwitz number.

Bihomogeneous symmetric functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider two natural gradings on the space of symmetric functions: by degree and by length. We introduce a differential operator $T$ that leaves the components of this double grading invariant and exhibit a basis of bihomogeneous symmetric functions in which this operator is triangular. This allows us to compute the eigenvalues of $T$, which turn out to be non-negative integers.

Combinatorial differential operators in: Faà di Bruno formula, enumeration of ballot paths, enriched rooted trees and increasing rooted trees
We obtain a differential equation for the enumeration of the path length of general increasing trees. By using differential operators and their combinatorial interpretation we give a bijective proof of a version of Faà di Bruno formula, and model the generation of ballot and Dyck paths. We get formulas for its enumeration according with the height of their lattice points. Recursive formulas for the enumeration of enriched increasing trees and forests with respect to the height of their internal and external vertices are also obtained. Finally we present a generalized form of all those results using one-parameter groups in the general context of formal power series in an arbitrary number of variables.

Contents of partitions and the combinatorics of permutation factorizations in genus 0
Published • View PublicationBIB
The central object of study is a formal power series that we call the content series, a symmetric function involving an arbitrary underlying formal power series $f$ in the contents of the cells in a partition. In previous work we have shown that the content series satisfies the KP equations. The main result of this paper is a new partial differential equation for which the content series is the unique solution, subject to a simple initial condition. This equation is expressed in terms of families of operators that we call $\mathcal{U}$ and $\mathcal{D}$ operators, whose action on the Schur symmetric function $s_λ$ can be simply expressed in terms of powers of the contents of the cells in $λ$. Among our results, we construct the ${\mathcal{U}}$ and ${\mathcal{D}}$ operators explicitly as partial differential operators in the underlying power sum symmetric functions. We also give a combinatorial interpretation for the content series in terms of the Jucys-Murphy elements in the group algebra of the symmetric group. This leads to an interpretation for the content series as a generating series for branched covers of the sphere by a Riemann surface of arbitrary genus $g$. As particular cases, by suitable choice of the underlying series $f$, the content series specializes to the generating series for three known classes of branched covers: Hurwitz numbers, monotone Hurwitz numbers, and $m$-hypermap numbers. We apply our pde to give new proofs of the explicit formulas for these three classes of number in genus $0$. In the case of the $m$-hypermap numbers of Bousquet-Mélou and Schaeffer, this is the first algebraic proof of this result.

Solution of the string equations for asymmetric potentials
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider the large $N$ expansion of the partition function for the Hermitian one-matrix model. It is well known that the coefficients of this expansion are generating functions $F^{(g)}$ for a certain kind of graph embedded in a Riemann surface. Other authors have made a simplifying assumption that the potential $V$ is an even function. We present a method for computing $F^{(g)}$ in the case that $V$ is not an even function. Our method is based on the string equations, and yields "valence independent" formulas which do not depend explicitly on the potential. We introduce a family of differential operators, the "string polynomials", which make clear the valence independent nature of the string equations.

The representation ring of the unitary groups and Markov processes of algebraic origin
Published in Advances in Mathematics 300 (2016), 544-615 • View PublicationBIB
The paper consists of two parts. The first part introduces the representation ring for the family of compact unitary groups U(1), U(2),.... This novel object is a commutative graded algebra R with infinite-dimensional homogeneous components. It plays the role of the algebra of symmetric functions, which serves as the representation ring for the family of finite symmetric groups. The purpose of the first part is to elaborate on the basic definitions and prepare the ground for the construction of the second part of the paper. The second part deals with a family of Markov processes on the dual object to the infinite-dimensional unitary group U(infinity). These processes were defined in a joint work with Alexei Borodin (J. Funct. Anal. 2012; arXiv:1009.2029). The main result of the present paper consists in the derivation of an explicit expression for their infinitesimal generators. It is shown that the generators are implemented by certain second order partial differential operators with countably many variables, initially defined as operators on R.

Connecting the Kontsevich-Witten and Hodge tau-functions by the $\hat{GL(\infty)}$ operators
Published in Commun. Math. Phys. (2016), 346(1), 143-190 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we present an explicit formula that connects the Kontsevich-Witten tau-function and the Hodge tau-function by differential operators belonging to the $\hat{GL(\infty)}$ group. Indeed, we show that the two tau-functions can be connected using Virasoro operators. This proves a conjecture posted by Alexandrov in [1].

Local asymptotic Euler-Maclaurin expansion for Riemann sums over a semi-rational polyhedron
Published • View PublicationBIB
Consider the Riemann sum of a smooth compactly supported function h(x) on a polyhedron in R^d, sampled at the points of the lattice Z^d/t. We give an asymptotic expansion when t goes to infinity, writing each coefficient of this expansion as a sum indexed by the faces f of the polyhedron, where the f-term is the integral over f of a differential operator applied to the function h(x). In particular, if a Euclidean scalar product is chosen, we prove that the differential operator for the face f can be chosen (in a unique way) to involve only normal derivatives to f. Our formulas are valid for a semi-rational polyhedron and a real sampling parameter t, if we allow for step-polynomial coefficients, instead of just constant ones.

Square-root cancellation for the signs of Latin squares
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $L(n)$ be the number of Latin squares of order $n$, and let $L^{\textrm{even}}(n)$ and $L^{\textrm{odd}}(n)$ be the number of even and odd such squares, so that $L(n) = L^{\textrm{even}}(n) + L^{\textrm{odd}}(n)$. The Alon-Tarsi conjecture states that $L^{\textrm{even}}(n)\neq L^{\textrm{odd}}(n)$ when $n$ is even (when $n$ is odd the two are equal for very simple reasons). In this short note we prove that $|L^{\textrm{even}}(n) - L^{\textrm{odd}}(n)|\leq L(n)^{\frac{1}{2} + o(1)},$ thus establishing the conjecture that the number of even and odd Latin squares, while conjecturally not equal in even dimensions, are equal to leading order asymptotically. Two proofs are given: both proceed by applying a differential operator to an exponential integral over $\mathrm{SU}(n)$. The method is inspired by a recent result of Kumar-Landsberg.

Path decompositions of digraphs and their applications to Weyl algebra
We consider decompositions of digraphs into edge-disjoint paths and describe their connection with the $n$-th Weyl algebra of differential operators. This approach gives a graph-theoretic combinatorial view of the normal ordering problem and helps to study skew-symmetric polynomials on certain subspaces of Weyl algebra. For instance, path decompositions can be used to study minimal polynomial identities on Weyl algebra, similar as Eulerian tours applicable for Amitsur--Levitzki theorem. We introduce the $G$-Stirling functions which enumerate decompositions by sources (and sinks) of paths.

Splines, lattice points, and arithmetic matroids
Published in Journal of Algebraic Combinatorics, March 2016, Volume 43, Issue 2, pp 277-324 • View PublicationBIB
Let $X$ be a $(d\times N)$-matrix. We consider the variable polytope $Π_X(u) = \{w \ge 0 : X w = u \}$. It is known that the function $T_X$ that assigns to a parameter $u \in \mathbb{R}^d$ the volume of the polytope $Π_X(u)$ is piecewise polynomial. The Brion-Vergne formula implies that the number of lattice points in $Π_X(u)$ can be obtained by applying a certain differential operator to the function $T_X$. In this article we slightly improve the Brion-Vergne formula and we study two spaces of differential operators that arise in this context: the space of relevant differential operators (i.e. operators that do not annihilate $T_X$) and the space of nice differential operators (i.e. operators that leave $T_X$ continuous). These two spaces are finite-dimensional homogeneous vector spaces and their Hilbert series are evaluations of the Tutte polynomial of the arithmetic matroid defined by the matrix $X$. They are closely related to the $\mathcal{P}$-spaces studied by Ardila-Postnikov and Holtz-Ron in the context of zonotopal algebra and power ideals.

Overview of the Heisenberg--Weyl Algebra and Subsets of Riordan Subgroups
Published • View PublicationBIB
In a first part, we are concerned with the relationships between polynomials in the two generators of the algebra of Heisenberg--Weyl, its Bargmann--Fock representation with differential operators and the associated one-parameter group.Upon this basis, the paper is then devoted to the groups of Riordan matrices associated to the related transformations of matrices (i.e. substitutions with prefunctions). Thereby, various properties are studied arising in Riordan arrays, in the Riordan group and, more specifically, in the `striped' Riordan subgroups; further, a striped quasigroup and a semigroup are also examined. A few applications to combinatorial structures are also briefly addressed in the Appendix.
