A Filtration of (q,t)-Catalan numbers
Published in Adv. in Appl. Math. 44 (2010), no. 1, 16--36 • View PublicationBIB
We define new generalizations of (q,t)-Catalan numbers applying nabla operator on k-Schur functions indexed by column partitions. In some special cases, we give a combinatorial interpretation of these numbers using configurations of Dyck paths. In some other special cases, we also interpret these new polynomial as Hilbert series of explicit sub-modules of the alternating diagonal harmonics built using differential operators.

Paradan's wall crossing formula for partition functions and Khovanski-Pukhlikov differential operator
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give an elementary algebraic proof of Paradan's wall crossing formulae for partition functions. We also express such jumps in volume and partition functions by one dimensional residue formulae. Subsequently we reprove the relation between them as given by the application of a generalized Khovanskii-Pukhlikov differential operator.

On certain spaces of lattice diagram polynomials
Published in Discrete Mathematics 256 (2002) 557-575 • Search Publication
The aim of this work is to study some lattice diagram determinants $Δ_L(X,Y)$. We recall that $M_L$ denotes the space of all partial derivatives of $Δ_L$. In this paper, we want to study the space $M^k_{i,j}(X,Y)$ which is defined as the sum of $M_L$ spaces where the lattice diagrams $L$ are obtained by removing $k$ cells from a given partition, these cells being in the ``shadow'' of a given cell $(i,j)$ in a fixed Ferrers diagram. We obtain an upper bound for the dimension of the resulting space $M^k_{i,j}(X,Y)$, that we conjecture to be optimal. This dimension is a multiple of $n!$ and thus we obtain a generalization of the $n!$ conjecture. Moreover, these upper bounds associated to nice properties of some special symmetric differential operators (the ``shift'' operators) allow us to construct explicit bases in the case of one set of variables, i.e. for the subspace $M^k_{i,j}(X)$ consisting of elements of 0 $Y$-degree.

The twisted Mellin transform
The "twisted Mellin transform" is a slightly modified version of the usual classical Mellin transform on $L^2(\mathbb R)$. In this short note we investigate some of its basic properties. From the point of views of combinatorics one of its most important interesting properties is that it intertwines the differential operator, $df/dx$, with its finite difference analogue, $\nabla f= f(x)-f(x-1)$. From the point of view of analysis one of its most important properties is that it describes the asymptotics of one dimensional quantum states in Bargmann quantization.

On Differential Rota-Baxter Algebras
Published in J. Pure and Appl. Algebra, vol 212 (2008), 522-540 • View PublicationBIB
A Rota-Baxter operator of weight $λ$ is an abstraction of both the integral operator (when $λ=0$) and the summation operator (when $λ=1$). We similarly define a differential operator of weight $λ$ that includes both the differential operator (when $λ=0$) and the difference operator (when $λ=1$). We further consider an algebraic structure with both a differential operator of weight $λ$ and a Rota-Baxter operator of weight $λ$ that are related in the same way that the differential operator and the integral operator are related by the First Fundamental Theorem of Calculus. We construct free objects in the corresponding categories. In the commutative case, the free objects are given in terms of generalized shuffles, called mixable shuffles. In the noncommutative case, the free objects are given in terms of angularly decorated rooted forests. As a byproduct, we obtain structures of a differential algebra on decorated and undecorated planar rooted forests.

On an identity due to ((Bump and Diaconis) and (Tracy and Widom))
Published in Canadian Math. Bulletin 54 (2011) no. 2, 255-269 • View PublicationBIB
A classical question for a Toeplitz matrix with given symbol is to compute asymptotics for the determinants of its reductions to finite rank. One can also consider how those asymptotics are affected when shifting an initial set of rows and columns (or, equivalently, asymptotics of their minors). Bump and Diaconis (Toeplitz minors, J. Combin. Theory Ser. A, 97 (2002), pp. 252--271) obtained a formula for such shifts involving Laguerre polynomials and sums over symmetric groups. They also showed how the Heine identity extends for such minors, which makes this question relevant to Random Matrix Theory. Independently, Tracy and Widom (On the limit of some Toeplitz-like determinants, SIAM J. Matrix Anal. Appl., 23 (2002), pp. 1194--1196) used the Wiener-Hopf factorization to express those shifts in terms of products of infinite matrices. We show directly why those two expressions are equal and uncover some structure in both formulas that was unknown to their authors. We introduce a mysterious differential operator on symmetric functions that is very similar to vertex operators. We show that the Bump-Diaconis-Tracy- Widom identity is a differentiated version of the classical Jacobi-Trudi identity.

Combinatorics of Partial Derivatives
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 13 (2006) #R1 • View PublicationBIB
The natural forms of the Leibniz rule for the $k$th derivative of a product and of Faà di Bruno's formula for the $k$th derivative of a composition involve the differential operator $\partial^k/\partial x_1 ... \partial x_k$ rather than $d^k/dx^k$, with no assumptions about whether the variables $x_1,...,x_k$ are all distinct, or all identical, or partitioned into several distinguishable classes of indistinguishable variables. Coefficients appearing in forms of these identities in which some variables are indistinguishable are just multiplicities of indistinguishable terms (in particular, if all variables are distinct then all coefficients are 1). The computation of the multiplicities in this generalization of Faà di Bruno's formula is a combinatorial enumeration problem that, although completely elementary, seems to have been neglected. We apply the results to cumulants of probability distributions.

Noncommutative Symmetric Systems over Associative Algebras
Published in J. Pure Appl. Algebra, 210 (2007), no. 2, 363--382 • View PublicationBIB
This paper is the first of a sequence papers ([Z4]--[Z7]) on the {\it ${\mathcal N}$CS $(\text{noncommutative symmetric})$ systems} over differential operator algebras in commutative or noncommutative variables ([Z4]); the ${\mathcal N}$CS systems over the Grossman-Larson Hopf algebras ([GL],[F]) of labeled rooted trees ([Z6]); as well as their connections and applications to the inversion problem ([BCW],[E4]) and specializations of NCSFs ([Z5],[Z7]). In this paper, inspired by the seminal work [GKLLRT] on NCSFs (noncommutative symmetric functions), we first formulate the notion {\it ${\mathcal N}$CS systems} over associative $\mathbb Q$-algebras. We then prove some results for ${\mathcal N}$CS systems in general; the ${\mathcal N}$CS systems over bialgebras or Hopf algebras; and the universal ${\mathcal N}$CS system formed by the generating functions of certain NCSFs in [GKLLRT]. Finally, we review some of the main results that will be proved in the followed papers [Z4], [Z6] and [Z7] as some supporting examples for the general discussions given in this paper.

Differential Operator Specializations of Noncommutative Symmetric Functions
Published in Adv. Math. 214 (2007), no. 2, 639-665 • View PublicationBIB
Let $K$ be any unital commutative $\mathbb Q$-algebra and $z=(z_1, ..., z_n)$ commutative or noncommutative free variables. Let $t$ be a formal parameter which commutes with $z$ and elements of $K$. We denote uniformly by $\kzz$ and $\kttzz$ the formal power series algebras of $z$ over $K$ and $K[[t]]$, respectively. For any $α\geq 1$, let $\cDazz$ be the unital algebra generated by the differential operators of $\kzz$ which increase the degree in $z$ by at least $α-1$ and $ \ataz $ the group of automorphisms $F_t(z)=z-H_t(z)$ of $\kttzz$ with $o(H_t(z))\geq α$ and $H_{t=0}(z)=0$. First, for any fixed $α\geq 1$ and $F_t\in \ataz$, we introduce five sequences of differential operators of $\kzz$ and show that their generating functions form a $\mathcal N$CS (noncommutative symmetric) system [Z4] over the differential algebra $\cDazz$. Consequently, by the universal property of the $\mathcal N$CS system formed by the generating functions of certain NCSFs (noncommutative symmetric functions) first introduced in [GKLLRT], we obtain a family of Hopf algebra homomorphisms $\cS_{F_t}: {\mathcal N}Sym \to \cDazz$ $(F_t\in \ataz)$, which are also grading-preserving when $F_t$ satisfies certain conditions. Note that, the homomorphisms $\cS_{F_t}$ above can also be viewed as specializations of NCSFs by the differential operators of $\kzz$. Secondly, we show that, in both commutative and noncommutative cases, this family $\cS_{F_t}$ (with all $n\geq 1$ and $F_t\in \ataz$) of differential operator specializations can distinguish any two different NCSFs. Some connections of the results above with the quasi-symmetric functions ([Ge], [MR], [S]) are also discussed.

Noncommutative Symmetric Functions and the Inversion Problem
Published in Internat. J. Algebra Comput., 18 (2007), no. 5, 869--899. • View PublicationBIB
Let $K$ be any unital commutative $\bQ$-algebra and $z=(z_1, z_2, ..., z_n)$ commutative or noncommutative variables. Let $t$ be a formal central parameter and $\kttzz$ the formal power series algebra of $z$ over $K[[t]]$. In \cite{GTS-II}, for each automorphism $F_t(z)=z-H_t(z)$ of $\kttzz$ with $H_{t=0}(z)=0$ and $o(H(z))\geq 1$, a \cNcs (noncommutative symmetric) system (\cite{GTS-I}) $\Oft$ has been constructed. Consequently, we get a Hopf algebra homomorphism $\cSft: \cNsf \to \cDzz$ from the Hopf algebra $\cNsf$ (\cite{G-T}) of NCSF's (noncommutative symmetric functions). In this paper, we first give a list for the identities between any two sequences of differential operators in the \cNcs system $\Oft$ by using some identities of NCSF's derived in \cite{G-T} and the homomorphism $\cSft$. Secondly, we apply these identities to derive some formulas in terms of differential operator in the system $\Oft$ for the Taylor series expansions of $u(F_t)$ and $u(F_t^{-1})$ $(u(z)\in \kttzz)$; the D-Log and the formal flow of $F_t$ and inversion formulas for the inverse map of $F_t$. Finally, we discuss a connection of the well-known Jacobian conjecture with NCSF's.

NCS Systems over Differential Operator Algebras and the Grossman-Larson Hopf Algebras of Labeled Rooted Trees
Let $K$ be any unital commutative $\bQ$-algebra and $W$ any non-empty subset of $\bN^+$. Let $z=(z_1, ..., z_n)$ be commutative or noncommutative free variables and $t$ a formal central parameter. % Denote uniformly by $\kzz$ and $\kttzz$ the formal power series algebras % of $z$ over $K$ and $K[[t]]$, respectively. Let $\cDazz$ $(α\geq 1)$ be the unital algebra generated by the differential operators of $\kzz$ which increase the degree in $z$ by at least $α-1$ and $ \ataz $ the group of automorphisms $F_t(z)=z-H_t(z)$ of $\kttzz$ with $o(H_t(z))\geq α$ and $H_{t=0}(z)=0$. First, we study a connection of the \cNcs systems $Ω_{F_t}$ $(F_t\in \ataz)$ (\cite{GTS-I}, \cite{GTS-II}) over the differential operators algebra $\cDazz$ and the \cNcs system $Ω_\bT^W$ (\cite{GTS-IV}) over the Grossman-Larson Hopf algebra $\cH_{GL}^W$ (\cite{GL}, \cite{F1}, \cite{F2}) of $W$-labeled rooted trees. We construct a Hopf algebra homomorphism $\mathcal A_{F_t}: \cH_{GL}^W \to \cDazz$ $(F_t\in \ataz)$ such that $\mathcal A_{F_t}^{\times 5}(Ω_\bT^W) =Ω_{F_t}$. Secondly, we generalize the tree expansion formulas for the inverse map (\cite{BCW}, \cite{Wr3}), the D-Log and the formal flow (\cite{WZ}) of $F_t$ in the commutative case to the noncommutative case. Thirdly, we prove the injectivity of the specialization $\cT:{\mathcal N}Sym \to \cH_{GL}^{\bN^+}$ (\cite{GTS-IV}) of NCSF's (noncommutative symmetric functions) (\cite{G-T}). Finally, we show the family of the specializations $\cS_{F_t}$ of NCSF's with all $n\geq 1$ and the polynomial automorphisms $F_t=z-H_t(z)$ with $H_t(z)$ homogeneous and the Jacobian matrix $JH_t$ strictly lower triangular can distinguish any two different NCSF's. The graded dualized versions of the main results above are also discussed.

Classifying Descents According to Parity

In this paper we refine the well-known permutation statistic "descent" by fixing parity of (exactly) one of the descent's numbers. We provide explicit formulas for the distribution of these (four) new statistics. We use certain differential operators to obtain the formulas. Moreover, we discuss connection of our new statistics to the Genocchi numbers. We also provide bijective proofs of some of our results.

Local Euler-Maclaurin formula for polytopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give a local Euler-Maclaurin formula for rational convex polytopes in a rational euclidean space . For every affine rational polyhedral cone C in a rational euclidean space W, we construct a differential operator of infinite order D(C) on W with constant rational coefficients, which is unchanged when C is translated by an integral vector. Then for every convex rational polytope P in a rational euclidean space V and every polynomial function f (x) on V, the sum of the values of f(x) at the integral points of P is equal to the sum, for all faces F of P, of the integral over F of the function D(N(F)).f, where we denote by N(F) the normal cone to P along F.

A differential ideal of symmetric polynomials spanned by Jack polynomials at $β=-(r-1)/(k+1)$
For each pair of positive integers (k,r) such that k+1,r-1 are coprime, we introduce an ideal $I^{(k,r)}_n$ of the ring of symmetric polynomials. The ideal $I^{(k,r)}_n$ has a basis consisting of Jack polynomials with parameter $β=-(r-1)/(k+1)$, and admits an action of a family of differential operators of Dunkl type including the positive half of the Virasoro algebra. The space $I^{(k,2)}_n$ coincides with the space of all symmetric polynomials in $n$ variables which vanish when $k+1$ variables are set equal. The space $I_n^{(2,r)}$ coincides with the space of correlation functions of an abelian current of a vertex operator algebra related to Virasoro minimal series (3,r+2).

Combinatorics and invariant differential operators on multiplicity free spaces
Published in J. Algebra 260 (2003), 194-229 • View PublicationBIB
We study the generalization of shifted Jack polynomials to arbitrary multiplicity free spaces. In a previous paper (math.RT/0006004) we showed that these polynomials are eigenfunctions for commuting difference operators. Our central result now is the "transposition formula", a generalization of Okounkov's binomial theorem (q-alg/9608021) for shifted Jack polynomials. From this formula, we derive an interpolation formula, an evaluation formula, a scalar product, a binomial theorem, and properties of the algebra generated by the multiplication and difference operators.

Algebras generated by reciprocals of linear forms
Published in Journal of Algebra, vol. 250, 549-558 (2002) • View PublicationBIB
Let $Δ$ be a finite set of nonzero linear forms in several variables with coefficients in a field $\mathbf K$ of characteristic zero. Consider the $\mathbf K$-algebra $C(Δ)$ of rational functions generated by $\{1/α\mid α\in Δ\}$. Then the ring $\partial(V)$ of differential operators with constant coefficients naturally acts on $C(Δ)$. We study the graded $\partial(V)$-module structure of $C(Δ)$. We especially find standard systems of minimal generators and a combinatorial formula for the Poincaré series of $C(Δ)$. Our proofs are based on a theorem by Brion-Vergne [brv1] and results by Orlik-Terao [ort2}.

Construction of commuting difference operators for multiplicity free spaces
Published in Selecta Math. (N.S.) 6 (2000), 443-470 • View PublicationBIB
We study root systems equipped with a basis of dominant weights such that certain axioms hold. This formalism allows to define a linear basis P of the space of Weyl group invariant polynomials. This basis is actually a family depending on at least one parameter. Our main result is the construction of difference operators which are simultaneously diagonalized by P. From this, Pieri type rules are derived. This generalizes results for shifted Jack polynomials. Even though the approach is purely combinatorial, the main motivation comes from multiplicity free actions of reductive groups on vector spaces. Then the algebra of invariant differential operators has a distinguished basis, the Capelli operators, which gives rise to a basis P as above. The paper ends with a comprehensive table detailing the combinatorial structure of multiplicity free actions.
