Generalized Thue-Morse words and palindromic richness
Published in Kybernetika 48 (2012), n. 3, pp. 361-370 • Search Publication
We prove that the generalized Thue-Morse word $\mathbf{t}_{b,m}$ defined for $b \geq 2$ and $m \geq 1$ as $\mathbf{t}_{b,m} = (s_b(n) \mod m)_{n=0}^{+\infty}$, where $s_b(n)$ denotes the sum of digits in the base-$b$ representation of the integer $n$, has its language closed under all elements of a group $D_m$ isomorphic to the dihedral group of order $2m$ consisting of morphisms and antimorphisms. Considering simultaneously antimorphisms $Θ\in D_m$, we show that $\mathbf{t}_{b,m}$ is saturated by $Θ$-palindromes up to the highest possible level. Using the terminology generalizing the notion of palindromic richness for more antimorphisms recently introduced by the author and E. Pelantová, we show that $\mathbf{t}_{b,m}$ is $D_m$-rich. We also calculate the factor complexity of $\mathbf{t}_{b,m}$.

Wronskians, cyclic group actions, and ribbon tableaux
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Wronski map is a finite, PGL_2(C)-equivariant morphism from the Grassmannian Gr(d,n) to a projective space (the projectivization of a vector space of polynomials). We consider the following problem. If C_r < PGL_2(C) is a cyclic subgroup of order r, how may C_r-fixed points are in the in a fibre of the Wronski map over a C_r-fixed point in the base? In this paper, we compute a general answer in terms of r-ribbon tableaux. When r=2, this computation gives the number of real points in the fibre of the Wronski map over a real polynomial with purely imaginary roots. More generally, we can compute the number of real points in certain intersections of Schubert varieties. When r divides d(n-d) our main result says that the generic number of C_r-fixed points in the fibre is the number of standard r-ribbon tableaux rectangular shape (n-d)^d. Computing by a different method, we show that the answer in this case is also given by the number of of standard Young tableaux of shape (n-d)^d that are invariant under N/r iterations of jeu de taquin promotion. Together, these two results give a new proof of Rhoades' cyclic sieving theorem for promotion on rectangular tableaux. We prove analogous results for dihedral group actions.
On Volumes of Permutation Polytopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper focuses on determining the volumes of permutation polytopes associated to cyclic groups, dihedral groups, groups of automorphisms of tree graphs, and Frobenius groups. We do this through the use of triangulations and the calculation of Ehrhart polynomials. We also present results on the theta body hierarchy of various permutation polytopes.

Cyclic sieving, promotion, and representation theory
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A, vol. 117, no. 1, (2010) 38-76 • View PublicationBIB
We prove a collection of conjectures of D. White \cite{WComm}, as well as some related conjectures of Abuzzahab-Korson-Li-Meyer \cite{AKLM} and of Reiner and White \cite{ReinerComm}, \cite{WComm}, regarding the cyclic sieving phenomenon of Reiner, Stanton, and White \cite{RSWCSP} as it applies to jeu-de-taquin promotion on rectangular tableaux. To do this, we use Kazhdan-Lusztig theory and a characterization of the dual canonical basis of $\mathbb{C}[x_{11}, ..., x_{nn}]$ due to Skandera \cite{SkanNNDCB}. Afterwards, we extend our results to analyzing the fixed points of a dihedral action on rectangular tableaux generated by promotion and evacuation, suggesting a possible sieving phenomenon for dihedral groups. Finally, we give applications of this theory to cyclic sieving phenomena involving reduced words for the long elements of hyperoctohedral groups and noncrossing partitions.
Ramified rectilinear polygons: coordinatization by dendrons
Published in Discrete Comput. Geom. 54 (4): 771-797, 2015 • View PublicationBIB
Simple rectilinear polygons (i.e. rectilinear polygons without holes or cutpoints) can be regarded as finite rectangular cell complexes coordinatized by two finite dendrons. The intrinsic $l_1$-metric is thus inherited from the product of the two finite dendrons via an isometric embedding. The rectangular cell complexes that share this same embedding property are called ramified rectilinear polygons. The links of vertices in these cell complexes may be arbitrary bipartite graphs, in contrast to simple rectilinear polygons where the links of points are either 4-cycles or paths of length at most 3. Ramified rectilinear polygons are particular instances of rectangular complexes obtained from cube-free median graphs, or equivalently simply connected rectangular complexes with triangle-free links. The underlying graphs of finite ramified rectilinear polygons can be recognized among graphs in linear time by a Lexicographic Breadth-First-Search. Whereas the symmetry of a simple rectilinear polygon is very restricted (with automorphism group being a subgroup of the dihedral group $D_4$), ramified rectilinear polygons are universal: every finite group is the automorphism group of some ramified rectilinear polygon.
Lie theory of finite simple groups and the Roth property
In noncommutative geometry a `Lie algebra' or bidirectional bicovariant differential calculus on a finite group is provided by a choice of an ad-stable generating subset C stable under inversion. We study the associated Killing form. For the universal calculus associated to C=G \ {e} we show that the magnitude of the Killing form μ=\sum_{a,b\in C}K^{-1}_{a,b} is defined for all finite groups (even when K is not invertible) and that a finite group is Roth, meaning its conjugation representation contains every irreducible, iff μ is not equal to 1/(N-1), where N is the number of conjugacy classes. We show further that the Killing form is invertible in the Roth case, and that the Killing form restricted to the (N-1)-dimensional subspace of invariant vectors is invertible iff the finite group is almost-Roth group (meaning its conjugation representation has at most one missing irreducible). It is known that most finite simple groups are Roth and that all are almost Roth. At the other extreme from the universal calculus we prove that the generating conjugacy class in the case of the dihedral groups D_{2n} with n odd has invertible Killing form, and the same for the 2-cycles conjugacy class in any S_n. We also compute some eigenvalues of the Killing form in the case of the n-cycles class in S_n. Finally, we verify invertibility of the Killing forms of all real conjugacy classes in all nonabelian finite simple groups to order 75,000, by computer, and we conjecture this to extend to all nonabelian finite simple groups.

The equivariant topology of stable Kneser graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
The stable Kneser graph $SG_{n,k}$, $n\ge1$, $k\ge0$, introduced by Schrijver \cite{schrijver}, is a vertex critical graph with chromatic number $k+2$, its vertices are certain subsets of a set of cardinality $m=2n+k$. Björner and de Longueville \cite{anders-mark} have shown that its box complex is homotopy equivalent to a sphere, $\Hom(K_2,SG_{n,k})\homot\Sphere^k$. The dihedral group $D_{2m}$ acts canonically on $SG_{n,k}$, the group $C_2$ with 2 elements acts on $K_2$. We almost determine the $(C_2\times D_{2m})$-homotopy type of $\Hom(K_2,SG_{n,k})$ and use this to prove the following results. The graphs $SG_{2s,4}$ are homotopy test graphs, i.e. for every graph $H$ and $r\ge0$ such that $\Hom(SG_{2s,4},H)$ is $(r-1)$-connected, the chromatic number $χ(H)$ is at least $r+6$. If $k\notin\set{0,1,2,4,8}$ and $n\ge N(k)$ then $SG_{n,k}$ is not a homotopy test graph, i.e.\ there are a graph $G$ and an $r\ge1$ such that $\Hom(SG_{n,k}, G)$ is $(r-1)$-connected and $χ(G)<r+k+2$.
Words and polynomial invariants of finite groups in non-commutative variables
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let V be a complex vector space with basis {x_1,x_2,...,x_n} and G be a finite subgroup of GL(V). The tensor algebra T(V) over the complex is isomorphic to the polynomials in the non-commutative variables x_1, x_2,..., x_n with complex coefficients. We want to give a combinatorial interpretation for the decomposition of T(V) into simple G-modules. In particular, we want to study the graded space of invariants in T(V) with respect to the action of G. We give a general method for decomposing the space T(V) into simple modules in terms of words in a Cayley graph of the group G. To apply the method to a particular group, we require a homomorphism from a subalgebra of the group algebra into the character algebra. In the case of G as the symmetric group, we give an example of this homomorphism from the descent algebra. When G is the dihedral group, we have a realization of the character algebra as a subalgebra of the group algebra. In those two cases, we have an interpretation for the graded dimensions of the invariant space in term of those words.

q,t-Fuss-Catalan numbers for finite reflection groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
In type A, the q,t-Fuss-Catalan numbers can be defined as a bigraded Hilbert series of a module associated to the symmetric group. We generalize this construction to (finite) complex reflection groups and, based on computer experiments, we exhibit several conjectured algebraic and combinatorial properties of these polynomials with non-negative integer coefficients. We prove the conjectures for the dihedral groups and for the cyclic groups. Finally, we present several ideas how the q,t-Fuss-Catalan numbers could be related to some graded Hilbert series of modules arising in the context of rational Cherednik algebras and thereby generalize known connections.

A classification of prime-valent regular Cayley maps on some groups
Published in Bull. Korean Math. Soc. 47 (2010) 17-27 • View PublicationBIB
A Cayley map is a 2-cell embedding of a Cayley graph into an orientable surface with the same local orientation induced by a cyclic permutation of generators at each vertex. In this paper, we provide classifications of prime-valent regular Cayley maps on abelian groups, dihedral groups and dicyclic groups. Consequently, we show that all prime-valent regular Cayley maps on dihedral groups are balanced and all prime-valent regular Cayley maps on abelian groups are either balanced or anti-balanced. Furthermore, we prove that there is no prime-valent regular Cayley map on any dicyclic group.

Equivalences on Acyclic Orientations
The cyclic and dihedral groups can be made to act on the set Acyc(Y) of acyclic orientations of an undirected graph Y, and this gives rise to the equivalence relations ~kappa and ~delta, respectively. These two actions and their corresponding equivalence classes are closely related to combinatorial problems arising in the context of Coxeter groups, sequential dynamical systems, the chip-firing game, and representations of quivers. In this paper we construct the graphs C(Y) and D(Y) with vertex sets Acyc(Y) and whose connected components encode the equivalence classes. The number of connected components of these graphs are denoted kappa(Y) and delta(Y), respectively. We characterize the structure of C(Y) and D(Y), show how delta(Y) can be derived from kappa(Y), and give enumeration results for kappa(Y). Moreover, we show how to associate a poset structure to each kappa-equivalence class, and we characterize these posets. This allows us to create a bijection from Acyc(Y)/~kappa to the union of Acyc(Y')/~kappa and Acyc(Y'')/~kappa, Y' and Y'' denote edge deletion and edge contraction for a cycle-edge in Y, respectively, which in turn shows that kappa(Y) may be obtained by an evaluation of the Tutte polynomial at (1,0).

A new characterization for the m-quasiinvariants of S_n and explicit basis for two row hook shapes
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 115 (2008), no. 8, 1333--1357 • View PublicationBIB
In 2002, Feigin and Veselov defined the space of m-quasiinvariants for any Coxeter group, building on earlier work of Chalykh and Veselov. While many properties of those spaces were proven from this definition, an explicit computation of a basis was only done in certain cases. In particular, Feigin and Veselov computed bases for the m-quasiinvariants of dihedral groups, including S_3, and Felder and Veselov computed the non-symmetric m-quasiinvariants of lowest degree for general S_n. In this paper, we provide a new characterization of the m-quasiinvariants of S_n, and use this to provide a basis for the isotypic component indexed by the partition [n-1,1]. This builds on a previous paper in which we computed a basis for S_3 via combinatorial methods.

The ideal-valued index for a dihedral group action, and mass partition by two hyperplanes
We compute the complete Fadell-Husseini index of the 8 element dihedral group D_8 acting on S^d \times S^d, both for F_2 and for integer coefficients. This establishes the complete goup cohomology lower bounds for the two hyperplane case of Gr"unbaum's 1960 mass partition problem: For which d and j can any j arbitrary measures be cut into four equal parts each by two suitably-chosen hyperplanes in R^d? In both cases, we find that the ideal bounds are not stronger than previously established bounds based on one of the maximal abelian subgroups of D_8.
Chirality Groups of Maps and Hypermaps
Although the phenomenon of chirality appears in many investigations of maps and hypermaps no detailed study of chirality seems to have been carried out. Chirality of maps and hypermaps is not merely a binary invariant but can be quantified by two new invariants -- the chirality group and the chirality index, the latter being the size of the chirality group. A detailed investigation of the chirality groups of maps and hypermaps will be the main objective of this paper. The most extreme type of chirality arises when the chirality group coincides with the monodromy group. Such hypermaps are called totally chiral. Examples of them are constructed by considering appropriate ``asymmetric'' pairs of generators for some non-abelian simple groups. We also show that every finite abelian group is the chirality group of some hypermap, whereas many non-abelian groups, including symmetric and dihedral groups, cannot arise as chirality groups.

Enumeration of chord diagrams
We determine the number of nonequivalent chord diagrams of order $n$ under the action of two groups, $C_{2n}$, a cyclic group of order $2n$, and $D_{2n}$, a dihedral group of order $4n$. Asymptotic formulas are also established.

A Large Dihedral Symmetry of the Set of Alternating Sign Matrices
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove a conjecture of Cohn and Propp, which refines a conjecture of Bosley and Fidkowski about the symmetry of the set of alternating sign matrices (ASMs). We examine data arising from the representation of an ASM as a collection of paths connecting 2n vertices and show it to be invariant under the dihedral group D_{2n} rearranging those vertices, which is much bigger than the group of symmetries of the square. We also generalize conjectures of Propp and Wilson relating some of this data for different values of n.

Enumeration of Symmetry Classes of Parallelogram Polyominoes
Published in Annales des Sciences mathematiques du Quebec, 25 (2001), 71-90 • Search Publication
Parallelogram polyominoes are a subclass of convex polyominoes in the square lattice that has been studied extensively in the literature. Recently congruence classes of convex polyominoes with respect to rotations and reflections have been enumerated by counting orbits under the action of the dihedral group D4, of symmetries of the square, on (translation-type) convex polyominoes. Asymmetric convex polyominoes were also enumerated using Moebius inversion in the lattice of subgroups of D4. Here we extend these results to the subclass of parallelogram polyominos using a subgroup D2 of D4 which acts of this class.
