Asymptotic enumeration of sparse uniform hypergraphs with given degrees
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics 51 (2016), 287 - 296 • View PublicationBIB
Let $r \geq 2$ be a fixed integer. For infinitely many $n$, let $\boldsymbol{k} = (k_1,..., k_n)$ be a vector of nonnegative integers such that their sum $M$ is divisible by $r$. We present an asymptotic enumeration formula for simple $r$-uniform hypergraphs with degree sequence $k$. (Here "simple" means that all edges are distinct and no edge contains a repeated vertex.) Our formula holds whenever the maximum degree $k_{\mathrm{max}}$ satisfies $k_{\mathrm{max}}^3 = o(M)$.

The maximum number of complete subgraphs in a graph with given maximum degree
Published • View PublicationBIB
Extremal problems involving the enumeration of graph substructures have a long history in graph theory. For example, the number of independent sets in a $d$-regular graph on $n$ vertices is at most $(2^{d+1}-1)^{n/2d}$ by the Kahn-Zhao theorem. Relaxing the regularity constraint to a minimum degree condition, Galvin conjectured that, for $n\geq 2d$, the number of independent sets in a graph with $δ(G)\geq d$ is at most that in $K_{d,n-d}$. In this paper, we give a lower bound on the number of independent sets in a $d$-regular graph mirroring the upper bound in the Kahn-Zhao theorem. The main result of this paper is a proof of a strengthened form of Galvin's conjecture, covering the case $n\leq 2d$ as well. We find it convenient to address this problem from the perspective of $\complement{G}$. In other words, we give an upper bound on the number of complete subgraphs of a graph $G$ on $n$ vertices with $Δ(G)\leq r$, valid for all values of $n$ and $r$.

Enumeration of symmetric centered rhombus tilings of a hexagon
A rhombus tiling of a hexagon is said to be centered if it contains the central lozenge. We compute the number of vertically symmetric rhombus tilings of a hexagon with side lengths $a, b, a, a, b, a$ which are centered. When $a$ is odd and $b$ is even, this shows that the probability that a random vertically symmetric rhombus tiling of a $a, b, a, a, b, a$ hexagon is centered is exactly the same as the probability that a random rhombus tiling of a $a, b, a, a, b, a$ hexagon is centered. This also leads to a factorization theorem for the number of all rhombus tilings of a hexagon which are centered.

Asymptotic enumeration of magic series
A magic series is a set of natural numbers that, by virtue of its size, sum, and maximum value, could fill a row of a normal magic square. In this paper, we derive an exact two-dimensional integral representation for the number of magic series of order N. By applying the stationary phase approximation, we develop an expansion in powers of 1/N for the number of magic series and calculate the first few terms. We find excellent agreement between our approximation and the known exact values. Related results are presented for magic cube and hypercube series, bimagic series, and trimagic series.

Towards a Combinatorial Understanding of Lattice Path Asymptotics
Published in Advances in Applied Mathematics Volume 92, January 2018, Pages 144-163 • View PublicationBIB
We provide a new strategy to compute the exponential growth constant of enumeration sequences counting walks in lattice path models restricted to the quarter plane. The bounds arise by comparison with half-planes models. In many cases the bounds are provably tight, and provide a combinatorial interpretation of recent formulas of Fayolle and Raschel (2012) and Bostan, Raschel and Salvy (2013). We discuss how to generalize to higher dimensions.

Link Patterns and the Catalan Tree
We demonstrate that a natural construction based on the two notions of insertion of a strand and finding the preimages of Temperley-Lieb algebra generators give an inductive means to generate all link patterns of a given number of strands. It is shown that the structure of the Catalan tree (as defined by Julian West) arises in the process of this induction, and that it can be exploited to give some refined enumerations of link patterns.
Combinatorics of non-ambiguous trees
Published • View PublicationBIB
This article investigates combinatorial properties of non-ambiguous trees. These objects we define may be seen either as binary trees drawn on a grid with some constraints, or as a subset of the tree-like tableaux previously defined by Aval, Boussicault and Nadeau. The enumeration of non-ambiguous trees satisfying some additional constraints allows us to give elegant combinatorial proofs of identities due to Carlitz, and to Ehrenborg and Steingrímsson. We also provide a hook formula to count the number of non-ambiguous trees with a given underlying tree. Finally, we use non-ambiguous trees to describe a very natural bijection between parallelogram polyominoes and binary trees.
Inversion polynomials for 321-avoiding permutations: addendum
This addendum contains results about the inversion number and major index polynomials for permutations avoiding 321 which did not fit well into the original paper. In particular, we consider symmetry, unimodality, behavior modulo 2, and signed enumeration.

Partition functions for dense instances of combinatorial enumeration problems
Given a complete graph with positive weights on its edges, we define the weight of a subset of edges as the product of weights of the edges in the subset and consider sums (partition functions) of weights over subsets of various kinds: cycle covers, closed walks, spanning trees. We show that if the weights of the edges of the graph are within a constant factor, fixed in advance, of each other then the bulk of the partition function is concentrated on the subsets of a particularly simple structure: cycle covers with few cycles, walks that visit every vertex only few times, and spanning trees with small degree of every vertex. This allows us to construct a polynomial time algorithm to separate graphs with many Hamiltonian cycles from graphs that are sufficiently far from Hamiltonian.

Enumerations of lozenge tilings, lattice paths, and perfect matchings and the weak Lefschetz property
MacMahon enumerated the plane partitions in an $a \times b \times c$ box. These are in bijection to lozenge tilings of a hexagon, to certain perfect matchings, and to families of non-intersecting lattice paths. In this work we consider more general regions, called triangular regions, and establish signed versions of the latter three bijections. Indeed, we use perfect matchings and families of non-intersecting lattice paths to define two signs of a lozenge tiling. A combinatorial argument involving a new method, called resolution of a puncture, then shows that the signs are in fact equivalent. This provides in particular two different determinantal enumerations of these families. These results are then applied to study the weak Lefschetz property of Artinian quotients by monomial ideals of a three-dimensional polynomial ring. We establish sufficient conditions guaranteeing the weak Lefschetz property as well as the semistability of the syzygy bundle of the ideal, classify the type two algebras with the weak Lefschetz property, and study monomial almost complete intersections in depth. Furthermore, we develop a general method that often associates to an algebra that fails the weak Lefschetz property a toric surface that satisfies a Laplace equation. We also present examples of toric varieties that satisfy arbitrarily many Laplace equations. Our combinatorial methods allow us to address the dependence on the characteristic of the base field for many of our results.
Linear Clique-Width for Hereditary Classes of Cographs
Published • View PublicationBIB
The class of cographs is known to have unbounded linear clique-width. We prove that a hereditary class of cographs has bounded linear clique-width if and only if it does not contain all quasi-threshold graphs or their complements. The proof borrows ideas from the enumeration of permutation classes.
Enumeration of generalized $BCI$ lambda-terms
Published • View PublicationBIB
We investigate the asymptotic number of elements of size $n$ in a particular class of closed lambda-terms (so-called $BCI(p)$-terms) which are related to axiom systems of combinatory logic. By deriving a differential equation for the generating function of the counting sequence we obtain a recurrence relation which can be solved asymptotically. We derive differential equations for the generating functions of the counting sequences of other more general classes of terms as well: the class of $BCK(p)$-terms and that of closed lambda-terms. Using elementary arguments we obtain upper and lowerestimates for the number of closed lambda-terms of size $n$. Moreover, a recurrence relation is derived which allows an efficient computation of the counting sequence. $BCK(p)$-terms are discussed briefly.

On the H-triangle of generalised nonnesting partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
To a crystallographic root system Φ, and a positive integer k, there are associated two Fuss-Catalan objects, the set of nonnesting partitions NN^(k)(Φ), and the cluster complex Δ^(k)(Φ). These posess a number of enumerative coincidences, many of which are captured in a surprising identity, first conjectured by Chapoton for k=1 and later generalized to k>1 by Armstrong. We prove this conjecture, obtaining some structural and enumerative results on NN^(k)(Φ) along the way, including an earlier conjecture by Fomin and Reading giving a refined enumeration by Fuß-Narayana numbers.

Cyclic permutations realized by signed shifts
Published • View PublicationBIB
The periodic (ordinal) patterns of a map are the permutations realized by the relative order of the points in its periodic orbits. We give a combinatorial characterization of the periodic patterns of an arbitrary signed shift, in terms of the structure of the descent set of a certain cyclic permutation associated to the pattern. Signed shifts are an important family of one-dimensional dynamical systems that includes shift maps and the tent map as particular cases. Defined as a function on the set of infinite words on a finite alphabet, a signed shift deletes the first letter and, depending on its value, possibly applies the complementation operation on the remaining word. For shift maps, reverse shift maps, and the tent map, we give exact formulas for their number of periodic patterns. As a byproduct of our work, we recover results of Gessel--Reutenauer and Weiss--Rogers and obtain new enumeration formulas for pattern-avoiding cycles.

Analytic Combinatorics of Planar Lattice Paths
Lattice paths effectively model phenomena in chemistry, physics and probability theory. Asymptotic enumeration of lattice paths is linked with entropy in the physical systems being modeled. Lattice paths restricted to different regions of the plane are well suited to a functional equation approach for exact and asymptotic enumeration. This thesis surveys results on lattice paths under various restrictions, with an emphasis on lattice paths in the quarter plane. For these paths, we develop an original systematic combinatorial approach providing direct access to the exponential growth factors of the asymptotic expressions.

Counting Permutations Modulo Pattern-Replacement Equivalences for Three-Letter Patterns
Published in William Kuszmaul. Counting Permutations Modulo Pattern-Replacement Equivalences for Three-Letter Patterns. Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, 20(4) (2013), \#P10 • View PublicationBIB
We study a family of equivalence relations on $S_n$, the group of permutations on $n$ letters, created in a manner similar to that of the Knuth relation and the forgotten relation. For our purposes, two permutations are in the same equivalence class if one can be reached from the other through a series of pattern-replacements using patterns whose order permutations are in the same part of a predetermined partition of $S_c$. When the partition is of $S_3$ and has one nontrivial part and that part is of size greater than two, we provide formulas for the number of classes created in each previously unsolved case. When the partition is of $S_3$ and has two nontrivial parts, each of size two (as do the Knuth and forgotten relations), we enumerate the classes for $13$ of the $14$ unresolved cases. In two of these cases, enumerations arise which are the same as those yielded by the Knuth and forgotten relations. The reasons for this phenomenon are still largely a mystery.

Equivalence Classes in $S_n$ for Three Families of Pattern-Replacement Relations
In particular, we are interested in the number of classes created in $S_n$ by each relation and in characterizing these classes. Imposing the condition that the partition of $S_c$ has one nontrivial part containing the cyclic shifts of a single permutation, we find enumerations for the number of nontrivial classes. When the permutation is the identity, we are able to compare the sizes of these classes and connect parts of the problem to Young tableaux and Catalan lattice paths. Imposing the condition that the partition has one nontrivial part containing all of the permutations in $S_c$ beginning with 1, we both enumerate and characterize the classes in $S_n$. We do the same for the partition that has two nontrivial parts, one containing all of the permutations in $S_c$ beginning with 1, and one containing all of the permutations in $S_c$ ending with 1.
Closed expressions for averages of set partition statistics
Published • View PublicationBIB
In studying the enumerative theory of super characters' of the group of upper triangular matrices over a finite field we found that the moments (mean, variance and higher moments) of novel statistics on set partitions have simple closed expressions as linear combinations of shifted bell numbers. It is shown here that families of other statistics have similar moments. The coefficients in the linear combinations are polynomials in $n$. This allows exact enumeration of the moments for small $n$ to determine exact formulae for all $n$.

(a,b)-rectangle patterns in permutations and words
In this paper, we introduce the notion of a $(a,b)$-rectangle pattern on permutations that not only generalizes the notion of successive elements (bonds) in permutations, but is also related to mesh patterns introduced recently by Brändén and Claesson. We call the $(k,k)$-rectangle pattern the $k$-box pattern. To provide an enumeration result on the maximum number of occurrences of the 1-box pattern, we establish an enumerative result on pattern-avoiding signed permutations. Further, we extend the notion of $(k,\ell)$-rectangle patterns to words and binary matrices, and provide distribution of $(1,\ell)$-rectangle patterns on words; explicit formulas are given for up to 7 letter alphabets where $\ell \in \{1,2\}$, while obtaining distributions for larger alphabets depends on inverting a matrix we provide. We also provide similar results for the distribution of bonds over words. As a corollary to our studies we confirm a conjecture of Mathar on the number of "stable LEGO walls" of width 7 as well as prove three conjectures due to Hardin and a conjecture due to Barker. We also enumerate two sequences published by Hardin in the On-Line Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences.
Ordered Partitions Avoiding a Permutation of Length 3
Published • View PublicationBIB
An ordered partition of $[n]=\{1, 2, \ldots, n\}$ is a partition whose blocks are endowed with a linear order. Let $\mathcal{OP}_{n,k}$ be set of ordered partitions of $[n]$ with $k$ blocks and $\mathcal{OP}_{n,k}(σ)$ be set of ordered partitions in $\mathcal{OP}_{n,k}$ that avoid a pattern $σ$. Recently, Godbole, Goyt, Herdan and Pudwell obtained formulas for the number of ordered partitions of $[n]$ with 3 blocks and the number of ordered partitions of $[n]$ with $n-1$ blocks avoiding a permutation pattern of length 3. They showed that $|\mathcal{OP}_{n,k}(σ)|=|\mathcal{OP}_{n,k}(123)|$ for any permutation $σ$ of length 3, and raised the question concerning the enumeration of $\mathcal{OP}_{n,k}(123)$. They also conjectured that the number of ordered partitions of $[2n]$ with blocks of size 2 avoiding a permutation pattern of length 3 satisfied a second order linear recurrence relation. In answer to the question of Godbole, et al., we obtain the generating function for $|\mathcal{OP}_{n,k}(123)|$ and we prove the conjecture on the recurrence relation.
