On the Erdős-Falconer distance problem for two sets of different size in vector spaces over finite fields
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider a finite fields version of the Erdős-Falconer distance problem for two different sets. In a certain range for the sizes of the two sets we obtain results of the conjectured order of magnitude.
Upper bounds on cyclotomic numbers
Published in Linear Algebra and Applications 438 (2012), 111-120 • View PublicationBIB
In this article, we give upper bounds for cyclotomic numbers of order e over a finite field with q elements, where e is a divisor of q-1. In particular, we show that under certain assumptions, cyclotomic numbers are at most $\lceil\frac{k}{2}\rceil$, and the cyclotomic number (0,0) is at most $\lceil\frac{k}{2}\rceil-1$, where k=(q-1)/e. These results are obtained by using a known formula for the determinant of a matrix whose entries are binomial coefficients.

The number of flags in finite vector spaces: Asymptotic normality and Mahonian statistics
Published in Journal of Algebraic Combinatorics 37 (2013), 361-380 • View PublicationBIB
We study the generalized Galois numbers which count flags of length r in N-dimensional vector spaces over finite fields. We prove that the coefficients of those polynomials are asymptotically Gaussian normally distributed as N becomes large. Furthermore, we interpret the generalized Galois numbers as weighted inversion statistics on the descent classes of the symmetric group on N elements and identify their asymptotic limit as the Mahonian inversion statistic when r approaches infinity. Finally, we apply our statements to derive further statistical aspects of generalized Rogers-Szegoe polynomials, re-interpret the asymptotic behavior of linear q-ary codes and characters of the symmetric group acting on subspaces over finite fields, and discuss implications for affine Demazure modules and joint probability generating functions of descent-inversion statistics.

We obtain a removal lemma for systems of linear equations over the circle group, using a similar result for finite fields due to Král, Serra and Vena, and we discuss some applications.

Asymptotics of generalized Galois numbers via affine Kac-Moody algebras
Published in Proceedings of the American Mathematical Society 141 (2013), no. 10, 3313-3326 • View PublicationBIB
Generalized Galois numbers count the number of flags in vector spaces over finite fields. Asymptotically, as the dimension of the vector space becomes large, we give their exponential growth and determine their initial values. The initial values are expressed analytically in terms of theta functions and Euler's generating function for the partition numbers. Our asymptotic enumeration method is based on a Demazure module limit construction for integrable highest weight representations of affine Kac-Moody algebras. For the classical Galois numbers, that count the number of subspaces in vector spaces over finite fields, the theta functions are Jacobi theta functions. We apply our findings to the asymptotic number of q-ary codes, and conclude with some final remarks about possible future research concerning asymptotic enumerations via limit constructions for affine Kac-Moody algebras.

Semiregular Polytopes and Amalgamated C-groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
In the classical setting, a convex polytope is said to be semiregular if its facets are regular and its symmetry group is transitive on vertices. This paper studies semiregular abstract polytopes, which have abstract regular facets, still with combinatorial automorphism group transitive on vertices. We analyze the structure of the automorphism group, focusing in particular on polytopes with two kinds of regular facets occurring in an "alternating" fashion. In particular we use group amalgamations to prove that given two compatible n-polytopes P and Q, there exists a universal abstract semiregular (n+1)-polytope which is obtained by "freely" assembling alternate copies of P and Q. We also employ modular reduction techniques to construct finite semiregular polytopes from reflection groups over finite fields.

Rational curves with many rational points over a finite field
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study a particular plane curve over a finite field whose normalization is of genus 0. The number of rational points of this curve achieves the Aubry-Perret bound for rational curves. The configuration of its rational points and a generalization of the curve are also presented.

Hamming weights and Betti numbers of Stanley-Reisner rings associated to matroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
To each linear code over a finite field we associate the matroid of its parity check matrix. We show to what extent one can determine the generalized Hamming weights of the code (or defined for a matroid in general) from various sets of Betti numbers of Stanley-Reisner rings of simplicial complexes associated to the matroid.

On the Unit Graph of a Noncommutative Ring
Published in Algebra Colloquium Vol. 22, No. spec01, pp. 817-822 (2015) • View PublicationBIB
Let $R$ be a ring (not necessary commutative) with non-zero identity. The unit graph of $R$, denoted by $G(R)$, is a graph with elements of $R$ as its vertices and two distinct vertices $a$ and $b$ are adjacent if and only if $a+b$ is a unit element of $R$. It was proved that if $R$ is a commutative ring and $\fm$ is a maximal ideal of $R$ such that $|R/\fm|=2$, then $G(R)$ is a complete bipartite graph if and only if $(R, \fm)$ is a local ring. In this paper we generalize this result by showing that if $R$ is a ring (not necessary commutative), then $G(R)$ is a complete $r$-partite graph if and only if $(R, \fm)$ is a local ring and $r=|R/m|=2^n$, for some $n \in \N$ or $R$ is a finite field. Among other results we show that if $R$ is a left Artinian ring, $2 \in U(R)$ and the clique number of $G(R)$ is finite, then $R$ is a finite ring.

An Erdős-Ko-Rado theorem in general linear groups
Let $S_n$ be the symmetric group on $n$ points. Deza and Frankl [M. Deza and P. Frankl, On the maximum number of permutations with given maximal or minimal distance, J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 22 (1977) 352--360] proved that if ${\cal F}$ is an intersecting set in $S_n$ then $|{\cal F}|\leq(n-1)!$. In this paper we consider the $q$-analogue version of this result. Let $\mathbb{F}_q^n$ be the $n$-dimensional row vector space over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ and $GL_n(\mathbb{F}_q)$ the general linear group of degree $n$. A set ${\cal F}_q\subseteq GL_n(\mathbb{F}_q)$ is {\it intersecting} if for any $T,S\in{\cal F}_q$ there exists a non-zero vector $α\in \mathbb{F}_q^n$ such that $αT=αS$. Let ${\cal F}_q$ be an intersecting set in $GL_n(\mathbb{F}_q)$. We show that $|{\cal F}_q|\leq q^{(n-1)n/2}\prod_{i=1}^{n-1}(q^i-1)$.

On the Removal Lemma for Linear Systems over Abelian Groups
In this paper we present an extension of the removal lemma to integer linear systems over abelian groups. We prove that, if the $k$--determinantal of an integer $(k\times m)$ matrix $A$ is coprime with the order $n$ of a group $G$ and the number of solutions of the system $Ax=b$ with $x_1\in X_1,..., x_m\in X_m$ is $o(n^{m-k})$, then we can eliminate $o(n)$ elements in each set to remove all these solutions. This is a follow-up of our former paper 'A Removal Lemma for Systems of Linear Equations over Finite Fields' arXiv:0809.1846v1, which dealt with the case of finite fields.

An improved sum-product estimate over finite fields
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper gives an improved sum-product estimate for subsets of a finite field whose order is not prime. It is shown, under certain conditions, that $$\max\{|A+A|,|A\cdot{A}|\}\gg{\frac{|A|^{12/11}}{(\log_2|A|)^{5/11}}}.$$ This new estimate matches, up to a logarithmic factor, the current best known bound obtained over prime fields by Rudnev (\cite{mishaSP}).

Gauss sums over some matrix groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this note, we give explicit expressions of Gauss sums for general (resp. special) linear groups over finite fields, which involves Gauss sums (resp. Kloosterman sums). The key ingredient is averaging such sums over Borel subgroups. As applications, we count the number of invertible matrices of zero-trace over finite fields and we also improve two bounds by Ferguson, Hoffman, Luca, Ostafe and Shparlinski in [ Some additive combinatorics problems in matrix rings, Rev. Mat. Complut. (23) 2010, 501--513 ].

Suborbits of a point stabilizer in the orthogonal group on the last subconstituent of orthogonal dual polar graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
As one of the serial papers on suborbits of point stabilizers in classical groups on the last subconstituent of dual polar graphs, the corresponding problem for orthogonal dual polar graphs over a finite field of odd characteristic is discussed in this paper. We determine all the suborbits of a point-stabilizer in the orthogonal group on the last subconstituent, and calculate the length of each suborbit. Moreover, we discuss the quasi-strongly regular graphs and the association schemes based on the last subconstituent, respectively.

Heisenberg characters, unitriangular groups, and Fibonacci numbers
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 119 (2012) 882-903 • View PublicationBIB
Let $\UT_n(\FF_q)$ denote the group of unipotent $n\times n$ upper triangular matrices over a finite field with $q$ elements. We show that the Heisenberg characters of $\UT_{n+1}(\FF_q)$ are indexed by lattice paths from the origin to the line $x+y=n$ using the steps $(1,0), (1,1), (0,1), (1,1)$, which are labeled in a certain way by nonzero elements of $\FF_q$. In particular, we prove for $n\geq 1$ that the number of Heisenberg characters of $\UT_{n+1}(\FF_q)$ is a polynomial in $q-1$ with nonnegative integer coefficients and degree $n$, whose leading coefficient is the $n$th Fibonacci number. Similarly, we find that the number of Heisenberg supercharacters of $\UT_n(\FF_q)$ is a polynomial in $q-1$ whose coefficients are Delannoy numbers and whose values give a $q$-analogue for the Pell numbers. By counting the fixed points of the action of a certain group of linear characters, we prove that the numbers of supercharacters, irreducible supercharacters, Heisenberg supercharacters, and Heisenberg characters of the subgroup of $\UT_n(\FF_q)$ consisting of matrices whose superdiagonal entries sum to zero are likewise all polynomials in $q-1$ with nonnegative integer coefficients.
Higher weights of Grassmann codes in terms of properties of Schubert unions
We describe the higher weights of the Grassmann codes $G(2,m)$ over finite fields ${\mathbb F}_q$ in terms of properties of Schubert unions, and in each case we determine the weight as the minimum of two explicit polynomial expressions in $q$.

Quantum Codes and Symplectic Matroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
The correspondence between linear codes and representable matroids is well known. But a similar correspondence between quantum codes and matroids is not known. We show that representable symplectic matroids over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ correspond to $\mathbb{F}_q$-linear quantum codes. Although this connection is straightforward, it does not appear to have been made earlier in literature. The correspondence is made through isotropic subspaces. We also show that the popular Calderbank-Shor-Steane (CSS) codes are essentially the homogenous symplectic matroids while the graph states, which figure so prominently in measurement based quantum computation, correspond to a special class of symplectic matroids, namely Lagrangian matroids. This association is useful in that it enables the study of symplectic matroids in terms of quantum codes and vice versa. Furthermore, it has application in the study of quantum secret sharing schemes.

On the arity gap of polynomial functions
The authors' previous results on the arity gap of functions of several variables are refined by considering polynomial functions over arbitrary fields. We explicitly describe the polynomial functions with arity gap at least 3, as well as the polynomial functions with arity gap equal to 2 for fields of characteristic 0 or 2. These descriptions are given in the form of decomposition schemes of polynomial functions. Similar descriptions are given for arbitrary finite fields. However, we show that these descriptions do not extend to infinite fields of odd characteristic.

Positivity in Quantum Cluster Algebras and Flags of Valued Quiver Representations
In this paper we give a direct proof of the positivity conjecture for adapted quantum cluster variables. Moreover, our process allows one to explicitly compute formulas for all adapted cluster monomials and certain ordered products of adapted cluster monomials. In particular, we describe all cluster monomials in cluster algebras and quantum cluster algebras of rank 2. One may obtain similar formulas for all finite type cluster monomials. The above results are achieved by computing explicit set-theoretic decompositions of Grassmannians of subrepresentations in adapted valued quiver representations into a disjoint union of products of standard vector space Grassmannians. We actually prove a more general result which should be of independent interest: we compute these decompositions for arbitrary flags of subrepresentations in adapted valued quiver representations. This implies the existence of counting polynomials for the number of points in these sets over different finite fields. Using this we extend the results of \cite{rupel} to quantum cluster algebras $\Acal_q(Q,\bfd)$, where $q$ is an indeterminate.

On Binary Codes from Conics in PG(2,q)
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let A be the incidence matrix of passant lines and internal points with respect to a conic in PG(2, q), where q is an odd prime power. In this article, we study both geometric and algebraic properties of the column null space L of A over the finite field of 2 elements. In particular, using methods from both finite geometry and modular presentation theory, we manage to compute the dimension of L, which provides a proof for the conjecture on the dimension of the binary code generated by L.
