An algebraic approach to finite projective planes
Published in J. of Algebraic Combinatorics 43 (2016), no. 3, 495--519 • View Publication • BIB
A finite projective plane, or more generally a finite linear space, has an associated incidence complex that gives rise to two natural algebras: the Stanley-Reisner ring $R/I_Λ$ and the inverse system algebra $R/I_Δ$. We give a careful study of both of these algebras. Our main results are a full description of the graded Betti numbers of both algebras in the more general setting of linear spaces (giving the result for the projective planes as a special case), and a classification of the characteristics in which the inverse system algebra associated to a finite projective plane has the Weak or Strong Lefschetz Property.

Categorification of a recursive formula for Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials
Published • View Publication • BIB
We obtain explicit branching rules for graded cell modules and graded simple modules over the endomorphism algebra of a Bott-Samelson bimodule. These rules allow us to categorify a well-known recursive formula for Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials.

Topological model for h"-vectors of simplicial manifolds
Published in Bol. Soc. Mat. Mexicana (2016), 1-9 • View Publication • BIB
Any manifold with boundary gives rise to a Poincare duality algebra in a natural way. Given a simplicial poset $S$ whose geometric realization is a closed orientable homology manifold, and a characteristic function, we construct a manifold with boundary such that graded components of its Poincare duality algebra have dimensions $h_k"(S)$. This gives a clear topological evidence for two well-known facts about simplicial manifolds: the nonnegativity of $h"$-numbers (Novik--Swartz theorem) and the symmetry $h"_k=h"_{n-k}$ (generalized Dehn--Sommerville relations).

The Bruhat order on conjugation-invariant sets of involutions in the symmetric group
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $I_n$ be the set of involutions in the symmetric group $S_n$, and for $A \subseteq \{0,1,\ldots,n\}$, let \[ F_n^A=\{σ\in I_n \mid \text{$σ$ has $a$ fixed points for some $a \in A$}\}. \] We give a complete characterisation of the sets $A$ for which $F_n^A$, with the order induced by the Bruhat order on $S_n$, is a graded poset. In particular, we prove that $F_n^{\{1\}}$ (i.e., the set of involutions with exactly one fixed point) is graded, which settles a conjecture of Hultman in the affirmative. When $F_n^A$ is graded, we give its rank function. We also give a short new proof of the EL-shellability of $F_n^{\{0\}}$ (i.e., the set of fixed point-free involutions), which was recently proved by Can, Cherniavsky, and Twelbeck. Keywords: Bruhat order, symmetric group, involution, conjugacy class, graded poset, EL-shellability

Zigzag diagrams and Martin boundary
Published in Ann. Probab., Volume 46, Number 5 (2018), 2562-2620 • View Publication • BIB
We investigate the asymptotic behavior of random paths on a graded graph which describes the subword order for words in two letters. This graph, denoted by $\mathcal{Z}$, has been introduced by Viennot, who also discovered a remarkable bijection between paths on $\mathcal{Z}$ and sequences of permutations. Later on, Gnedin and Olshanski used this bijection to describe the set of Gibbs measures on this graph. Both authors also conjectured that the Martin boundary of $\mathcal{Z}$ should coincide with its minimal boundary. We give here a proof of this conjecture by describing the distribution of a large random path conditioned on having a prescribed endpoint. We also relate paths on the graph Z with paths on the Young lattice, and we finally give a central limit theorem for the Plancherel measure on the set of paths in $\mathcal{Z}$.

Peckness of Edge Posets
Published • View Publication • BIB
For any graded poset $P$, we define a new graded poset, $\mathcal E(P)$, whose elements are the edges in the Hasse diagram of P. For any group, $G$, acting on the boolean algebra, $B_n$, we conjecture that $\mathcal E(B_n/G)$ is Peck. We prove that the conjecture holds for "common cover transitive" actions. We give some infinite families of common cover transitive actions and show that the common cover transitive actions are closed under direct and semidirect products.

Trimness of Closed Intervals in Cambrian Semilattices
Published in Comptes Rendus - Mathématique 354 (2016), pages 113-120 • View Publication • BIB
In this article, we give a short algebraic proof that all closed intervals in a $γ$-Cambrian semilattice $\mathcal{C}_γ$ are trim for any Coxeter group $W$ and any Coxeter element $γ\in W$. This means that if such an interval has length $k$, then there exists a maximal chain of length $k$ consisting of left-modular elements, and there are precisely $k$ join- and $k$ meet-irreducible elements in this interval. Consequently every graded interval in $\mathcal{C}_γ$ is distributive. This problem was open for any Coxeter group that is not a Weyl group.

M-vector analogue for the cd-index
Published • View Publication • BIB
A well-known conjecture of McMullen, proved by Billera, Lee and Stanley, describes the face numbers of simple polytopes. The necessary and sufficient condition is that the toric g-vector of the polytope is an M-vector, that is, the vector of dimensions of graded pieces of a standard graded algebra A. Recent work by Murai, Nevo and Yanagawa suggests a similar condition for the coefficients of the cd-index of a poset P. The coefficients of the cd-index are conjectured to be the dimensions of graded pieces in a standard multigraded algebra A. We prove the conjecture for simplicial spheres and we give numerical evidence for general shellable spheres. In the simplicial case we construct the multi-graded algebra A explicitly using lattice paths.

A Survey of directed graphs invariants
In this paper, various kinds of invariants of directed graphs are summarized. In the first topic, the invariant w(G) for a directed graph G is introduced, which is primarily defined by S. Chen and X.M. Chen to solve a problem of weak connectedness of tensor product of two directed graphs. Further, we present our recent studies on the invariant w(G) in categorical view. In the second topic, Homology theory on directed graph is introduced, and we also cast on categorical view of the definition. The third topic mainly focuses on Laplacians on graphs, including traditional work and latest result of 1-laplacian by K.C.Chang. Finally, Zeta functions and Graded graphs are introduced, inclduing Bratteli-Vershik diagram, dual graded graphs and differential posets, with some applications in dynamic system.

On commutative algebra associated to $t$-labeled subforests of a graph
For a given graph $G$, we construct an associated commutative algebra, whose dimension is equal to the number of $t$-labeled forests of $G$. We show that the dimension of the $k$-th graded component of this algebra also has a combinatorial meaning and that its Hilbert polynomial can be expressed through the Tutte polynomial of $G$.

Fusion products and toroidal algebras
Published in Pacific J. Math. 278 (2015) 427-445 • View Publication • BIB
We study the category of finite--dimensional bi--graded representations of toroidal current algebras associated to finite--dimensional complex simple Lie algebras. Using the theory of graded representations for current algebras, we construct in different ways objects in that category and prove them to be isomorphic. As a consequence we obtain generators and relations for certain types of fusion products including the $N$--fold fusion product of $V(λ)$. This result shows that the fusion product of these types is independent of the chosen parameters, proving a special case of a conjecture by Feigin and Loktev. Moreover, we prove a conjecture by Chari, Fourier and Sagaki on truncated Weyl modules for certain classes of dominant integral weights and show that they are realizable as fusion products. In the last section we consider the case $\mathfrak{g}=\mathfrak{sl}_2$ and compute a PBW type basis for truncated Weyl modules of the associated current algebra.

Generalized Polarizations Modules (Extended Abstract)
Published in DMTCS proc. FPSAC'15, 2015, 781-792 • View Publication • BIB
This work enrols the research line of M. Haiman on the Operator Theorem (the old operator conjecture). This theorem states that the smallest $\mathfrak{S}_n$-module closed under taking partial derivatives and closed under the action of polarization operators that contains the Vandermonde determinant is the space of diagonal harmonics polynomials. We start generalizing the context of this theorem to the context of polynomials in $\ell$ sets of $n$ variables $x_{ij}$ with $1\leq i\leq \ell$ et $1\leq j\leq n$. Given a $\frak{S}_n$-stable family of homogeneous polynomials in the variables $x_{ij}$ the smallest vector space closed under taking partial derivatives and closed under the action of polarization operators that contains $F$ is the polarization module generated by the family $F$. These polarization modules are all representation of the direct product $\mathfrak{S}_n\times{GL}_{\ell}(\mathbb{C})$. In order to study the decomposition into irreducible submodules, we compute the graded Frobenius characteristic of these modules. For several cases of $\mathfrak{S}_n$-stable families of homogeneous polynomials in $n$ variables, for every $n\geq 1$, we show general formulas for this graded characteristic in a global manner, independent of the value of $\ell$.
RNA, local moves on plane trees, and transpositions on tableaux
Published in Involve, a Journal of Mathematics 11:3 (2018), 383-411 • View Publication • BIB
We define a collection of functions $s_i$ on the set of plane trees (or standard Young tableaux). The functions are adapted from transpositions in the representation theory of the symmetric group and almost form a group action. They were motivated by $\textit{local moves}$ in combinatorial biology, which are maps that represent a certain unfolding and refolding of RNA strands. One main result of this study identifies a subset of local moves that we call $s_i$-local moves, and proves that $s_i$-local moves correspond to the maps $s_i$ acting on standard Young tableaux. We also prove that the graph of $s_i$-local moves is a connected, graded poset with unique minimal and maximal elements. We then extend this discussion to functions $s_i^C$ that mimic reflections in the Weyl group of type $C$. The corresponding graph is no longer connected, but we prove it has two connected components, one of symmetric and the other of asymmetric plane trees. We give open questions and possible biological interpretations.

Variation of log canonical thresholds in linear systems

We investigate the variation of log canonical thresholds in (graded) linear systems. For toric log Fano varieties, we give a sharp lower bound for log canonical thresholds of the anticanonical members in terms of the global minimal log discrepancy.

CW posets after the Poincare Conjecture
Anders Bjorner characterized which finite graded partially ordered sets arise as the posets of closure relations on cells of a finite, regular CW complex. His characterization of these "CW posets" required each open interval $(\hat{0},u)$ to have order complex homeomorphic to a sphere of dimension $rk(u)-2$. Work of Danaraj and Klee showed that sufficient conditions were for the poset to be thin and shellable. The proof of the Poincare Conjecture enables the requirement of shellability to be replaced by the homotopy Cohen-Macaulay property. This expands the range of tools that may be used to prove a poset is a CW poset.

Dual Filtered Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We define a K-theoretic analogue of Fomin's dual graded graphs, which we call dual filtered graphs. The key formula in the definition is DU-UD= D + I. Our major examples are K-theoretic analogues of Young's lattice, of shifted Young's lattice, and of the Young-Fibonacci lattice. We suggest notions of tableaux, insertion algorithms, and growth rules whenever such objects are not already present in the literature. We also provide a large number of other examples. Most of our examples arise via two constructions, which we call the Pieri construction and the Mobius construction. The Pieri construction is closely related to the construction of dual graded graphs from a graded Hopf algebra, as described by Bergeron-Lam-Li, Nzeutchap, and Lam-Shimizono. The Mobius construction is more mysterious but also potentially more important, as it corresponds to natural insertion algorithms.

Betti splitting via componentwise linear ideals
Published • View Publication • BIB
A monomial ideal $I$ admits a Betti splitting $I=J+K$ if the Betti numbers of $I$ can be determined in terms of the Betti numbers of the ideals $J,K$ and $J \cap K$. Given a monomial ideal $I$, we prove that $I=J+K$ is a Betti splitting of $I$, provided $J$ and $K$ are componentwise linear, generalizing a result of Francisco, Hà and Van Tuyl. If $I$ has a linear resolution, the converse also holds. We apply this result recursively to the Alexander dual of vertex-decomposable, shellable and constructible simplicial complexes and to determine the graded Betti numbers of the defining ideal of three general fat points in the projective space.

Antipodes and involutions
Published • View Publication • BIB
If H is a connected, graded Hopf algebra, then Takeuchi's formula can be used to compute its antipode. However, there is usually massive cancellation in the result. We show how sign-reversing involutions can sometimes be used to obtain cancellation-free formulas. We apply this idea to nine different examples. We rederive known formulas for the antipodes in the Hopf algebra of polynomials, the shuffle Hopf algebra, the Hopf algebra of quasisymmertic functions in both the monomial and fundamental bases, the Hopf algebra of multi-quasisymmetric functions in the fundamental basis, and the incidence Hopf algebra of graphs. We also find cancellation-free expressions for particular values of the antipode in the immaculate basis for the noncommutative symmetric functions as well as the Malvenuto-Reutenauer and Porier-Reutenauer Hopf algebras, some of which are the first of their kind. We include various conjectures and suggestions for future research.

A combinatorial interpretation for Schreyer's tetragonal invariants
Published • View Publication • BIB
Schreyer has proved that the graded Betti numbers of a canonical tetragonal curve are determined by two integers $b_1$ and $b_2$, associated to the curve through a certain geometric construction. In this article we prove that in the case of a smooth projective tetragonal curve on a toric surface, these integers have easy interpretations in terms of the Newton polygon of its defining Laurent polynomial. We can use this to prove an intrinsicness result on Newton polygons of small lattice width.
