Geometric and combinatorial properties of extended Springer fibers
We consider a generalization of the Springer resolution studied in earlier work of the authors, called the extended Springer resolution. In type $A$, this map plays a role in Lusztig's generalized Springer correspondence comparable to that of the Springer resolution in the Springer correspondence. The fibers of the Springer resolution play a key part in the latter story, and connect the combinatorics of tableaux to geometry. Our main results prove the same is true for fibers of the extended Springer resolution -- their geometry is governed by the combinatorics of tableaux. In particular, we prove that these fibers are paved by affines, up to the action of a finite group, and give combinatorial formulas for their Betti numbers. This yields, among other things, a simple formula for dimensions of stalks of the Lusztig sheaves arising in the study of the generalized Springer correspondence, and shows that there is a close resemblance between each Lusztig sheaf and the Springer sheaf for a smaller group.
Low elements in dominant Shi regions
This note is a complement of a recent paper about low elements in affine Coxeter groups. We explain in terms of ad-nilpotent ideals of a Borel subalgebra why the minimal elements of dominant Shi regions are low. We also give a survey of the bijections involved in the study of dominant Shi regions in affine Weyl groups.
Group divisible designs with block size 4 and group sizes 4 and 7
In this paper, we consider the existence of group divisible designs (GDDs) with block size $4$ and group sizes $4$ and $7$. We show that there exists a 4-GDD of type $4^t 7^s$ for all but a finite specified set of feasible values for $(t, s)$.
Symmetry Parameters of Praeger-Xu Graphs
Praeger-Xu graphs are connected, symmetric, 4-regular graphs that are unusual both in that their automorphism groups are large, and in that vertex stabilizer subgroups are also large. Determining number and distinguishing number are parameters that measure the symmetry of a graph by investigating additional conditions that can be imposed on a graph to eliminate its nontrivial automorphisms. In this paper, we compute the values of these parameters for Praeger-Xu graphs. Most Praeger-Xu graphs are 2-distinguishable; for these graphs we also provide the cost of 2-distinguishing.
Undecidability of translational monotilings
In the 60's, Berger famously showed that translational tilings of $\mathbb{Z}^2$ with multiple tiles are algorithmically undecidable. Recently, Bhattacharya proved the decidability of translational monotilings (tilings by translations of a single tile) in $\mathbb{Z}^2$. The decidability of translational monotilings in higher dimensions remained unsolved. In this paper, by combining our recently developed techniques with ideas introduced by Aanderaa and Lewis, we finally settle this problem, achieving the undecidability of translational monotilings of (periodic subsets of) virtually $\mathbb{Z}^2$ spaces, namely, spaces of the form $\mathbb{Z}^2\times G_0$, where $G_0$ is a finite Abelian group. This also implies the undecidability of translational monotilings in $\mathbb{Z}^d$, $d\geq 3$.
The Erdős-Ko-Rado Theorem for non-quasiprimitive groups of degree $3p$
The \emph{intersection density} of a finite transitive group $G\leq \operatorname{Sym}(Ω)$ is the rational number $ρ(G)$ given by the ratio between the maximum size of a subset of $G$ in which any two permutations agree on some elements of $Ω$ and the order of a point stabilizer of $G$. In 2022, Meagher asked whether $ρ(G)\in \{1,\frac{3}{2},3\}$ for any transitive group $G$ of degree $3p$, where $p\geq 5$ is an odd prime. For the primitive case, it was proved in [\emph{J. Combin. Ser. A}, 194:105707, 2023] that the intersection density is $1$.
It is shown in this paper that the answer to this question is affirmative for non-quasiprimitive groups, unless possibly when $p = q+1$ is a Fermat prime and $Ω$ admits a unique $G$-invariant partition $\mathcal{B}$ such that the induced action $\overline{G}_\mathcal{B}$ of $G$ on $\mathcal{B}$ is an almost simple group containing $\operatorname{PSL}_{2}(q)$.
Forbidden Tournaments and the Orientation Completion Problem
For a fixed finite set of finite tournaments ${\mathcal F}$, the ${\mathcal F}$-free orientation problem asks whether a given finite undirected graph $G$ has an $\mathcal F$-free orientation, i.e., whether the edges of $G$ can be oriented so that the resulting digraph does not embed any of the tournaments from ${\mathcal F}$. We prove that for every ${\mathcal F}$, this problem is in P or NP-complete. Our proof reduces the classification task to a complete complexity classification of the orientation completion problem for ${\mathcal F}$, which is the variant of the problem above where the input is a directed graph instead of an undirected graph, introduced by Bang-Jensen, Huang, and Zhu (2017). Our proof uses results from the theory of constraint satisfaction, and a result of Agarwal and Kompatscher (2018) about infinite permutation groups and transformation monoids.
On the size of Bruhat intervals
For affine Weyl groups and elements associated to dominant coweights, we present a convex geometry formula for the size of the corresponding lower Bruhat intervals. Extensive computer calculations for these groups have led us to believe that a similar formula exists for all lower Bruhat intervals.
Multiplicity-free induced characters of symmetric groups
Let $n$ be a non-negative integer. Combining algebraic and combinatorial techniques, we investigate for which pairs $(G,ρ)$ of a subgroup $G$ of the symmetric group $S_n$ and an irreducible character $ρ$ of $G$ the induced character $ρ\!\uparrow^{S_n}$ is multiplicity-free. As a result, for $n\geq 66$, we classify all subgroups $G\leq S_n$ which give rise to such a pair. Moreover, for the majority of these groups $G$ we identify all the possible choices of the irreducible character $ρ$, assuming $n\geq 73$.

Enumeration of hypermaps is widely studied in many fields. In particular, enumerating hypermaps with a fixed edge-type according to the number of faces and genus is one topic of great interest. However, it is challenging and explicit results mainly exist for hypermaps having one face, especially for the edge-type corresponding to maps. The first systematic study of one-face hypermaps with any fixed edge-type is the work of Jackson (Trans.~Amer.~Math.~Soc.~299, 785--801, 1987) using group characters. In 2011, Stanley obtained the generating polynomial of one-face hypermaps of any fixed edge-type expressed in terms of the backward shift operator. There are also enormous amount of work on enumerating one-face hypermaps of specific edge-types. The enumeration of hypermaps with more faces is generally much harder. In this paper, we make some progress in that regard, and obtain the generating polynomials and properties for a family of typical two-face hypermaps with almost any fixed edge-type.
The complex of injective words of permutations which are not derangements is contractible
Let $D_n \subseteq Σ_n$ be the set of derangements in the symmetric group. We prove that the complex of injective words generated by $Σ_n \setminus D_n$ is contractible. This gives a conceptual explanation to the well known fact that the complex of injective words generated by $Σ_n$ is homotopy equivalent to the wedge sum $\underset{|D_n|}{\bigvee} S^{n-1}$.
An infinite family of $m$-ovoids of the hyperbolic quadrics $\mathcal{Q}^+(7,q)$
An infinite family of $(q^2+q+1)$-ovoids of $\mathcal{Q}^+(7,q)$, $q\equiv 1\pmod{3}$, admitting the group $\mathrm{PGL}(3,q)$, is constructed. The main tool is the general theory of generalized hexagons.
Cyclic 2-Spreads in $V(6,q)$ and Flag-Transitive Affine Linear Spaces
In this paper we completely classify spreads of 2-dimensional subspaces of a 6-dimensional vector space over a finite field of characteristic not two or three upon which a cyclic group acts transitively. This addresses one of the remaining open cases in the classification of flag-transitive linear spaces. We utilise the polynomial approach innovated by Pauley and Bamberg to obtain our results.
Equivariant lattice bases
We study lattices in free abelian groups of infinite rank that are invariant under the action of the infinite symmetric group, with emphasis on finiteness of their equivariant bases. Our framework provides a new method for proving finiteness results in algebraic statistics. As an illustration, we show that every invariant lattice in $\mathbb{Z}^{(\mathbb{N}\times[c])}$, where $c\in\mathbb{N}$, has a finite equivariant Graver basis. This result generalizes and strengthens several finiteness results about Markov bases in the literature.

We study the conjugacy class growth function in finitely generated virtually abelian groups. That is, the number of elements in the ball of radius $n$ in the Cayley graph which intersect a fixed conjugacy class. In the class of virtually abelian groups, we prove that this function is always asymptotically equivalent to a polynomial. Furthermore, we show that in any affine Coxeter group, the degree of polynomial growth of a conjugacy class is equivalent to the reflection length of any element of that class.
Lower bounds on the homology of Vietoris-Rips complexes of hypercube graphs
We provide novel lower bounds on the Betti numbers of Vietoris-Rips complexes of hypercube graphs of all dimensions, and at all scales. In more detail, let $Q_n$ be the vertex set of $2^n$ vertices in the $n$-dimensional hypercube graph, equipped with the shortest path metric. Let $VR(Q_n;r)$ be its Vietoris--Rips complex at scale parameter $r \ge 0$, which has $Q_n$ as its vertex set, and all subsets of diameter at most $r$ as its simplices. For integers $r<r'$ the inclusion $VR(Q_n;r)\hookrightarrow VR(Q_n;r')$ is nullhomotopic, meaning no persistent homology bars have length longer than one, and we therefore focus attention on the individual spaces $VR(Q_n;r)$. We provide lower bounds on the ranks of homology groups of $VR(Q_n;r)$. For example, using cross-polytopal generators, we prove that the rank of $H_{2^r-1}(VR(Q_n;r))$ is at least $2^{n-(r+1)}\binom{n}{r+1}$. We also prove a version of \emph{homology propagation}: if $q\ge 1$ and if $p$ is the smallest integer for which $rank H_q(VR(Q_p;r))\neq 0$, then $rank H_q(VR(Q_n;r)) \ge \sum_{i=p}^n 2^{i-p} \binom{i-1}{p-1} \cdot rank H_q(VR(Q_p;r))$ for all $n \ge p$. When $r\le 3$, this result and variants thereof provide tight lower bounds on the rank of $H_q(VR(Q_n;r))$ for all $n$, and for each $r \ge 4$ we produce novel lower bounds on the ranks of homology groups. Furthermore, we show that for each $r\ge 2$, the homology groups of $VR(Q_n;r)$ for $n \ge 2r+1$ contain propagated homology not induced by the initial cross-polytopal generators.

It has long been known that the combinatorial properties of a graph $Γ$ are closely related to the group theoretic properties of its right angled artin group (raag). It's natural to ask if the graph homomorphisms are similarly related to the group homomorphisms between two raags. The main result of this paper shows that there is a purely algebraic way to characterize the raags amongst groups, and the graph homomorphisms amongst the group homomorphisms. As a corollary we present a new algorithm for recovering $Γ$ from its raag.
Classification of normal phylogenetic varieties for tripods
We provide a complete classification of normal phylogenetic varieties coming from tripods, and more generally, from trivalent trees. Let $G$ be an abelian group. We prove that the group-based phylogenetic variety $X_{G,\mathcal{T}}$, for any trivalent tree $\mathcal{T}$, is projectively normal if and only if $G\in \{\mathbb{Z}_2, \mathbb{Z}_3, \mathbb{Z}_2\times\mathbb{Z}_2, \mathbb{Z}_4, \mathbb{Z}_5, \mathbb{Z}_7\}$.
Commutator nilpotency for somewhere-to-below shuffles
Given a positive integer $n$, we consider the group algebra of the symmetric group $S_{n}$. In this algebra, we define $n$ elements $t_{1},t_{2},\ldots,t_{n}$ by the formula \[ t_{\ell}:=\operatorname*{cyc}\nolimits_{\ell}+\operatorname*{cyc}\nolimits_{\ell,\ell+1}+\operatorname*{cyc}\nolimits_{\ell,\ell+1,\ell+2}+\cdots+\operatorname*{cyc}\nolimits_{\ell,\ell+1,\ldots,n}, \] where $\operatorname*{cyc}\nolimits_{\ell,\ell+1,\ldots,k}$ denotes the cycle that sends $\ell\mapsto\ell+1\mapsto\ell+2\mapsto\cdots\mapsto k\mapsto\ell$. These $n$ elements are called the *somewhere-to-below shuffles* due to an interpretation as card-shuffling operators.
In this paper, we show that their commutators $\left[ t_{i},t_{j}\right] =t_{i}t_{j}-t_{j}t_{i}$ are nilpotent, and specifically that \[ \left[ t_{i},t_{j}\right] ^{\left\lceil \left( n-j\right) /2\right\rceil +1}=0\ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \text{for any }i,j\in\left\{ 1,2,\ldots,n\right\} \] and \[ \left[ t_{i},t_{j}\right] ^{j-i+1}=0\ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \text{for any }1\leq i\leq j\leq n. \] We discuss some further identities and open questions.
Right-angled Artin groups and the cohomology basis graph
Let $Γ$ be a finite graph and let $A(Γ)$ be the corresponding right-angled Artin group. From an arbitrary basis $\mathcal B$ of $H^1(A(Γ),\mathbb F)$ over an arbitrary field, we construct a natural graph $Γ_{\mathcal B}$ from the cup product, called the \emph{cohomology basis graph}. We show that $Γ_{\mathcal B}$ always contains $Γ$ as a subgraph. This provides an effective way to reconstruct the defining graph $Γ$ from the cohomology of $A(Γ)$, to characterize the planarity of the defining graph from the algebra of $A(Γ)$, and to recover many other natural graph-theoretic invariants. We also investigate the behavior of the cohomology basis graph under passage to elementary subminors, and show that it is not well-behaved under edge contraction.
