On Valency Problems of Saxl Graphs

Let $G$ be a permutation group on a set $Ω$ and recall that a base for $G$ is a subset of $Ω$ such that its pointwise stabiliser is trivial. In a recent paper, Burness and Giudici introduced the Saxl graph of $G$, denoted $Σ(G)$, with vertex set $Ω$ and two vertices adjacent if they form a base. If $G$ is transitive, then $Σ(G)$ is vertex-transitive and it is natural to consider its valency (which we refer to as the valency of $G$). In this paper we present a general method for computing the valency of any finite transitive group and we use it to calculate the exact valency of every primitive group with stabiliser a Frobenius group with cyclic kernel. As an application, we calculate the valency of every almost simple primitive group with an alternating socle and soluble stabiliser and we use this to extend results of Burness and Giudici on almost simple primitive groups with prime-power or odd valency.
Quantum symmetry vs nonlocal symmetry
We introduce the notion of nonlocal symmetry of a graph $G$, defined as a winning quantum correlation for the $G$-automorphism game that cannot be produced classically. Recent connections between quantum group theory and quantum information show that quantum correlations for this game correspond to tracial states on $C(\text{Qut}(G))$ -- the algebra of functions on the quantum automorphism group of $G$. This allows us to also define nonlocal symmetry for any quantum permutation group. We investigate the differences and similarities between this and the notion of quantum symmetry, defined as non-commutativity of $C(\text{Qut}(G))$. Roughly speaking, quantum symmetry vs nonlocal symmetry can be viewed respectively as non-classicality of our model of reality vs non-classicality of our observation of reality.
We show that quantum symmetry is necessary but not sufficient for nonlocal symmetry. In particular, we show that the complete graph on five vertices is the only connected graph on five or fewer vertices with nonlocal symmetry, despite a dozen others having quantum symmetry. In particular this shows that the quantum symmetric group on four points, $S_4^+$, does not exhibit nonlocal symmetry, answering a question from the literature. In contrast to quantum symmetry, we show that two disjoint classical automorphisms do not guarantee nonlocal symmetry. However, three disjoint automorphisms do suffice. We also give a construction of quantum permutation matrices built from a finite abelian group $Γ$ and a permutation $π$ on $|Γ|$ elements. Computational evidence suggests that for cyclic groups of increasing size almost all permutations $π$ result in nonlocal symmetry. Surprisingly, the construction never results in nonlocal symmetry when $\mathbb{Z}_2^3$ is used. We also investigate under what conditions nonlocal symmetry arises when taking unions or products of graphs.

We investigate \emph{singular} symmetric and Kähler--Einstein Fano polytopes. More precisely, we show that every symmetric Fano polytope is Kähler--Einstein generalizing the work by Batyrev and Selivanova, and study the automorphism groups of symmetric and Kähler--Einstein Fano polygons in detail. In particular, every finte subgroup of $GL_2(\mathbb{Z})$ is an automorphism group of a Kähler--Einstein Fano polygon.
Number of $A+B\ne C$ solutions in abelian groups and application to counting independent sets in hypergraphs

The paper deals with a problem of Additive Combinatorics. Let ${\mathbf G}$ be a finite abelian group of order $N$. We prove that the number of subset triples $A,B,C\subset {\mathbf G}$ such that for any $x\in A$, $y\in B$ and $z\in C$ one has $x+y\ne z$ equals $$
3\cdot 4^N+N3^{N+1} + O((3-c_*)^N) $$ for some absolute constant $c_*>0$. This provides a tight estimate for the number of independent sets in a special 3-uniform linear hypergraph and gives a support for the natural conjecture concerning the maximal possible number of independent sets in such hypergraphs on $n$ vertices.
On the second largest eigenvalue of some Cayley graphs of the Symmetric Group

Let $S_n$ and $A_{n}$ denote the symmetric and alternating group on the set $\{1,.., n\},$ respectively. In this paper we are interested in the second largest eigenvalue $λ_{2}(Γ)$ of the Cayley graph $Γ=Cay(G,H)$ over $G=S_{n}$ or $A_{n}$ for certain connecting sets $H.$
Let $1<k\leq n$ and denote the set of all $k$-cycles in $S_{n}$ by $C(n,k).$ For $H=C(n,n)$ we prove that $λ_{2}(Γ)=(n-2)!$ (when $n$ is even) and $λ_{2}(Γ)=2(n-3)!$ (when $n$ is odd). Further, for $H=C(n,n-1)$ we have $λ_{2}( Γ)=3(n-3)(n-5)!$ (when $n$ is even) and $λ_{2}(Γ)=2(n-2)(n-5) !$ (when $n$ is odd). The case $H=C(n,3)$ has been considered in X. Huang and Q. Huang, The second largest eigenvalue of some Cayley graphs on alternating groups, J. Algebraic Combinatorics} 50(2019), $99-111$.
Let $1\leq r<k<n$ and let $C(n,k;r) \subseteq C(n,k)$ be set of all $k$-cycles in $S_{n}$ which move all the points in the set $\{1,2,..., r\}.$ That is to say, $g=(i_{1},i_{2}... i_{k})(i_{k+1})\dots(i_{n})\in C(n,k;r)$ if and only if $\{1,2,..., r\}\subset \{i_{1},i_{2},..., i_{k}\}.$
Our main result concerns $λ_{2}( Γ)$, where $Γ=Cay(G,H)$ with $H=C(n,k;r)$ with $1\leq r<k<n$ when $G=S_{n}$ if $k$ is even and $G=A_{n}$ if $k$ is odd. Here we observe that $$λ_{2}( Γ)\geq (k-2)! {n-r \choose k-r} \frac{1}{n-r} \big((k-1)(n-k) - \frac{(k-r-1)(k-r)}{n-r-1}\big).$$ We show that this bound is sharp in the special case $k=r+1$ , giving $λ_{2}(Γ)=r!(n-r-1)$. The cases with $H=C(n,3;1)$ and $H=C(n,3;2)$ were considered earlier in the same paper of X. Huang and Q. Huang.
Graph coverings and twisted operators

Given a graph and a representation of its fundamental group, there is a naturally associated twisted adjacency operator. The main result of this article is the fact that these operators behave in a controlled way under graph covering maps. When such an operator can be used to enumerate objects, or compute a partition function, this has concrete implications on the corresponding enumeration problem, or statistical mechanics model. For example, we show that if $\widetildeΓ$ is a finite connected covering graph of a graph $Γ$ endowed with edge-weights $x=\{x_e\}_e$, then the spanning tree partition function of $Γ$ divides the one of $\widetildeΓ$ in the ring $\mathbb{Z}[x]$. Several other consequences are obtained, some known, others new.
The Characterization of Finite Elasticities

Our motivating goal is factorization in Krull Domains $H$ with finitely generated class group $G$. The elasticity $ρ(H)$ is the maximal number of atoms in any re-factorization of a product of $k$ atoms. The elasticities are the same as those of a combinatorial monoid of zero-sum sequences $B(G_0)$, where $G_0\subseteq G$ are the classes with height one primes. We characterize when finite elasticity holds for any Krull Domain with finitely generated class group. Our results are valid for the more general class of Transfer Krull Monoids (over a subset $G_0$ of a finitely generated abelian group $G$). We show there is a minimal $s\leq (d+1)m$, where $d$ is the torsion free rank and $m$ is the torsion exponent, such that $ρ_s(H)<\infty$ implies $ρ_k(H)<\infty$ for all $k\geq 1$. This ensures $ρ(H)<\infty$ if and only if $ρ_{(d+1)m}(H)<\infty$. Our characterization is in terms of a simple combinatorial obstruction to infinite elasticity: there existing a subset $G_0^\diamond\subseteq G_0$ and bound $N$ such that there are no nontrivial zero-sum sequences with terms from $G_0^\diamond$, and every minimal zero-sum sequence has at most $N$ terms from $G_0\setminus G_0^\diamond$. We give an explicit description of $G_0^\diamond$ in terms of the Convex Geometry of $G_0$ modulo the torsion subgroup $G_T\leq G$, and show finite elasticity is equivalent to there being no positive linear combination of the elements of this explicitly defined subset equal to $0$ modulo $G_T$. We use our results to show finite elasticity implies the set of distances $Δ(H)$, the catenary degree $\mathsf c(H)$ (for Krull Monoids) and a weakened tame degree (for Krull Monoids) are all also finite, and that the Structure Theorem for Unions holds. Our results for factorization in Transfer Krull Monoids are accomplished by developing an extensive theory in Convex Geometry generalizing positive bases.

In this short note, we describe a problem in algebraic geometry where the solution involves Catalan numbers. More specifically, we consider the derived category of coherent sheaves on an elliptic surface, and the action of its autoequivalence group on its Bridgeland stability manifold. In solving an equation involving this group action, the generating function of Catalan numbers arises, allowing us to use asymptotic estimates of Catalan numbers to arrive at a bound for the solution set.
Arithmetic subsequences in a random ordering of an additive set

For a finite set $A$ of size $n$, an ordering is an injection from $\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$ to $A$. We present results concerning the asymptotic properties of the length $L_n$ of the longest arithmetic subsequence in a random ordering of an additive set $A$. In the torsion-free case where $A = [1,n]^d\subseteq {\bf Z}^d$, we prove that $L_n\sim 2d\log n/\log\log n$. We show that the case $A = {\bf Z}/n{\bf Z}$ behaves asymptotically like the torsion-free case with $d=1$, and then use this fact to compute the expected length of the longest arithmetic subsequence in a random ordering of an arbitrary finite abelian group. We also prove that the number of orderings of ${\bf Z}/n{\bf Z}$ without any arithmetic subsequence of length $3$ is $2^{n-1}$ when $n\geq 2$ is a power of $2$, and zero otherwise. We conclude with a concrete application to elementary $p$-groups and a discussion of possible noncommutative generalisations.

Parapolar spaces are point-line geometries introduced as a geometric approach to (exceptional) algebraic groups. We characterize a wide class of Lie geometries as parapolar spaces satisfying a simple intersection property. In particular many of the exceptional Lie incidence geometries occur. {In an appendix, we extend our result to the locally disconnected case and discuss the locally disconnected case of some other well known characterizations.
On the homotopy type of intersections of two real Bruhat cells

Real Bruhat cells give an important and well studied stratification of such spaces as $GL_{n+1}$, $Flag_{n+1} = SL_{n+1}/B$, $SO_{n+1}$ and $Spin_{n+1}$. We study the intersections of a top dimensional cell with another cell (for another basis). Such an intersection is naturally identified with a subset of the lower nilpotent group $Lo_{n+1}^{1}$. We are particularly interested in the homotopy type of such intersections. In this paper we define a stratification of such intersections. As a consequence, we obtain a finite CW complex which is homotopically equivalent to the intersection.
We compute the homotopy type for several examples. It turns out that for $n \le 4$ all connected components of such subsets of $Lo_{n+1}^1$ are contractible: we prove this by explicitly constructing the corresponding CW complexes. Conversely, for $n \ge 5$ and the top permutation, there is always a connected component with even Euler characteristic, and therefore not contractible. This follows from formulas for the number of cells per dimension of the corresponding CW complex. For instance, for the top permutation $S_6$, there exists a connected component with Euler characteristic equal to $2$. We also give an example of a permutation in $S_6$ for which there exists a connected component which is homotopically equivalent to the circle $S^1$.

We study certain spaces of vertex functions on the Cayley graphs corresponding to N-fold products of the group of integers modulo m, where m=3, 4, or 5, that are invariant under the adjacency operator that maps a value at a given vertex to each of its neighbors. An application to spatio-spectral limiting, an analogue of time and band limiting, is also discussed.
A study on Type-2 isomorphic circulant graphs and related Abelian groups
Circulant graphs $C_n(R)$ and $C_n(S)$ are said to be \emph{Adam's isomorphic} if there exist some $a\in \mathbb{Z}_n^*$ such that $S = a R$ under arithmetic reflexive modulo $n$. In 1970, Elspas and Turner \cite{eltu} raised a question on the isomorphism of $C_{16}(1, 3, 7)$ and $C_{16}(2, 3, 5)$ and Vilfred \cite{v96} gave its answer by defining Type-2 isomorphism, different from Adam's isomorphism or Type-1 isomorphism, of $C_n(R)$ w.r.t. $m$ where $m > 1$ is a divisor of $\gcd(n, r)$ and $r\in R$. This paper is an extensive study on Type-2 isomorphic circulant graphs. Vilfred and Wilson \cite{vw0A} obtain isomorphic circulant graphs $C_{np^3}(R)$ of Type-2 w.r.t. $m$ = $p$, and related Abelian groups where $p$ is a prime number and $n\in\mathbb{N}$. Using Theorem \ref{c13}, a list of $T2_{np^3,p}(C_{np^3}(R^{np^3,x+yp}_i))$ = $\{C_{np^3}(R^{np^3,x+yp}_{j}) : j = 1,2,...,p\}$ for $p$ = 3,5,7,11 and $n$ = 1 to 5 and also for $p$ = 13 and $n$ = 1 to 3 are given in the Annexure where $(T2_{np^3,p}(C_{np^3}(R^{np^3,x+yp}_i)), \circ)$ is an abelian group on the $p$ isomorphic circulant graphs $C_{np^3}(R^{np^3,x+yp}_i)$ of Type-2 w.r.t. $m$ = $p$, $1 \leq i,j \leq p$, $1 \leq x \leq p-1$, $y\in\mathbb{N}_0$, $0 \leq y \leq np - 1$, $1 \leq x+yp \leq np^2-1$, $p,np^3-p\in R^{np^3,x+yp}_i$ and $i,j,n,x\in\mathbb{N}$. We also show existence of isomorphic circulant graphs $C_n(R)$ and $C_n(S)$ which are neither Type-1 nor Type-2 w.r.t. any particular $m$. We use VB program to develop this theory and for illustration of examples.

$\operatorname{SL}(2,q)$-unitals are unitals of order $q$ admitting a regular action of $\operatorname{SL}(2,q)$ on the complement of some block. They can be obtained from affine $\operatorname{SL}(2,q)$-unitals via parallelisms. We compute a sharp upper bound for automorphism groups of affine $\operatorname{SL}(2,q)$-unitals and show that exactly two parallelisms are fixed by all automorphisms. In $\operatorname{SL}(2,q)$-unitals obtained as closures of affine $\operatorname{SL}(2,q)$-unitals via those two parallelisms, we show that there is one block fixed under the full automorphism group.
Three Affine SL(2,8)-Unitals
$\operatorname{SL}(2,q)$-unitals are unitals of order $q$ admitting a regular action of $\operatorname{SL}(2,q)$ on the complement of some block. We introduce three non-classical affine $\operatorname{SL}(2,8)$-unitals and their full automorphism groups. Each of those three affine unitals can be completed to at least two non-isomorphic unitals, leading to six pairwise non-isomorphic unitals of order $8$.

We study the spectrum of a family of algebras, the inhomogeneous Gaudin algebras, acting on the $n$-fold tensor representation $\mathbb{C}[x_1, \ldots, x_r]^{\otimes n}$ of the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{gl}_r$. We use the work of Halacheva-Kamnitzer-Rybnikov-Weekes to demonstrate that the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence describes the behaviour of the spectrum as we move along special paths in the family. We apply the work of Mukhin-Tarasov-Varchenko, which proves that the rational Calogero-Moser phase space can be realised as a part of this spectrum, to relate this to behaviour at $t=0$ of rational Cherednik algebras of $\mathfrak{S}_n$. As a result, we confirm for symmetric groups a conjecture of Bonnafé-Rouquier which proposes an equality between the Calogero-Moser cells they defined and the well-known Kazhdan-Lusztig cells.

We relate the mixed Hodge structure on the cohomology of open positroid varieties (in particular, their Betti numbers over $\mathbb{C}$ and point counts over $\mathbb{F}_q$) to Khovanov--Rozansky homology of associated links. We deduce that the mixed Hodge polynomials of top-dimensional open positroid varieties are given by rational $q,t$-Catalan numbers. Via the curious Lefschetz property of cluster varieties, this implies the $q,t$-symmetry and unimodality properties of rational $q,t$-Catalan numbers. We show that the $q,t$-symmetry phenomenon is a manifestation of Koszul duality for category $\mathcal{O}$, and discuss relations with open Richardson varieties and extension groups of Verma modules.
Around spin Hurwitz numbers

We present a review of the spin Hurwitz numbers, which count the ramified coverings with spin structures. They are related to peculiar $Q$ Schur functions, which are actually related to characters of the Sergeev group. This allows one to put the whole story into the modern context of matrix models and integrable hierarchies. Hurwitz partition functions are actually broader than conventional $τ$-functions, but reduce to them in particular circumstances. We explain, how a special $d$-soliton $τ$-functions of KdV and Veselov-Novikov hierarchies generate the spin Hurwitz numbers $H^\pm\left( Γ^r_d \right)$ and $H^\pm\left( Γ^r_d,Δ\right)$. The generating functions of the spin Hurwitz numbers are hypergeometric $τ$-functions of the BKP integrable hierarchy, and we present their fermionic realization. We also explain how one can construct $τ$-functions of this type entirely in terms of the $Q$ Schur functions. An important role in this approach is played by factorization formulas for the $Q$ Schur functions on special loci.
Flip Graphs
Flip graphs are graphs on combinatorial objects in which the adjacency relation reflects a local change in the underlying objects. In this thesis we introduce Yoke graphs, a family of flip graphs that generalizes previously studied families of flip graphs on colored triangle-free triangulations, arc permutations and geometric caterpillars. Our main results are the computation of the diameter of an arbitrary Yoke graph and a full characterization of the automorphism group of this family of graphs. We also show that Yoke graphs are Schreier graphs of the affine Weyl group of type $\tilde{C}_m$.
The approach we take in the computation of the diameter is different from the ones used for colored triangle-free triangulations and arc permutations. We show that the approach used for arc permutation graphs does not extend to Yoke graphs. At the heart of our proof lies the idea of transforming a diameter evaluation into an eccentricity problem. The characterization of the automorphism group is a new result for the above mentioned three special families of Yoke graphs.
Supersymmetry and Representation Theory in Low Dimensions
Beginning from a discussion of the known most fundamental dynamical structures of the Standard Model of physics, extended into the realms of mathematics and theory by the concept of "supersymmetry" or "SUSY," an introduction to efforts to develop a complete representation theory is given. Techniques drawing from graph theory, coding theory, Coxeter Groups, Riemann surfaces, and computational approaches to the study of algebraic varieties are briefly highlighted as pathways for future exploration and progress.
