Tropical Normal Functions -- Higher Abel-Jacobi Invariants of Tropical cycles
We consider the variation of tropical Hodge structure (TVHS) associated to families of tropical varieties. The family of the tropical intermediate Jacobians of the associated tropical Hodge structure defines a bundle of tropical Jacobians, whose sections we call the tropical normal functions. We define formal sequential derivatives of these functions on the base with respect to the natural Gauss-Manin connection as the Hodge theoretic invariants detecting tropical cycles in the fibers. The associated invariants which are defined inductively are the higher Abel-Jacobi invariants in the tropical category. They naturally identify the tropical Bloch-Beilinson filtration on the tropical Chow group. We examine this construction on the moduli of tropical curves with marked points, in order to study the tropical tautological classes in the tautological ring of $\mathcal{M}_{g,n}^{\text{trop}}$. The expectation is the nontriviality of these cycles could be examined with less complexity in the tropical category. The construction is compatible with the tropicalization functor on the category of schemes, and the aforementioned procedure will also provide an alternative way to examine the relations in the tautological ring of $\mathcal{M}_{g,n}$ in the schemes category.
$q$-Kreweras numbers for coincidental Coxeter groups attached to limit symbols
For a coincidental Coxeter group, i.e. of type $A_{n-1}, BC_n, H_3,$ or $I_2(m)$, we define the corresponding $q$-Kreweras numbers attached to limit symbols in the sense of Shoji. The construction of these numbers resembles the argument of Reiner and Sommers and these two share similar properties, but our version is slightly different from and combinatorially simpler than theirs. We also study the combinatorial properties of our $q$-Kreweras numbers, i.e. positivity, relation with $q$-Narayana numbers, and cyclic sieving phenomenon.
Switching for Small Strongly Regular Graphs
We provide an abundance of strongly regular graphs (SRGs) for certain parameters $(n, k, λ, μ)$ with $n < 100$. For this we use Godsil-McKay (GM) switching with a partition of type $4,n-4$ and Wang-Qiu-Hu (WQH) switching with a partition of type $3,3,n-6$ or $4,4,n-8$. In most cases, we start with a highly symmetric graph which belongs to a finite geometry. Many of the obtained graphs are new; for instance, we find 16565438 strongly regular graphs with parameters $(81, 30, 9, 12)$ while only 15 seem to be described in the literature.
We provide statistics about the size of the occurring automorphism groups. We also find the recently discovered Krčadinac partial geometry, thus finding a third method of constructing it.
On the Classification of Binary Completely Transitive Codes with Almost-Simple Top-Group

A code $C$ in the Hamming metric, that is, is a subset of the vertex set $V\varGamma$ of the Hamming graph $\varGamma=H(m,q)$, gives rise to a natural distance partition $\{C,C_1,\ldots,C_ρ\}$, where $ρ$ is the covering radius of $C$. Such a code $C$ is called completely transitive if the automorphism group $\rm{Aut}(C)$ acts transitively on each of the sets $C$, $C_1$, \ldots, $C_ρ$. A code $C$ is called $2$-neighbour-transitive if $ρ\geq 2$ and $\rm{Aut}(C)$ acts transitively on each of $C$, $C_1$ and $C_2$.
Let $C$ be a completely transitive code in a binary ($q=2$) Hamming graph having full automorphism group $\rm{Aut}(C)$ and minimum distance $δ\geq 5$. Then it is known that $\rm{Aut}(C)$ induces a $2$-homogeneous action on the coordinates of the vertices of the Hamming graph. The main result of this paper classifies those $C$ for which this induced $2$-homogeneous action is not an affine, linear or symplectic group. We find that there are $13$ such codes, $4$ of which are non-linear codes. Though most of the codes are well-known, we obtain several new results. First, a new non-linear completely transitive code is constructed, as well as a related non-linear code that is $2$-neighbour-transitive but not completely transitive. Moreover, new proofs of the complete transitivity of several codes are given. Additionally, we answer the question of the existence of distance-regular graphs related to the completely transitive codes appearing in our main result.

We consider the abstract structure of the monoid M of misère impartial game values. Several new results are presented, including a proof that the group of fractions of M is almost torsion-free; a method of calculating the number of distinct games born by day 7; and some new results on the structure of prime games. Also included are proofs of a few older results due to Conway, such as the Cancellation Theorem, that are essential to the analysis but whose proofs are not readily available in the literature.
Much of the work presented here was done jointly with John Conway and Dan Hoey, and I dedicate this paper to their memory.

For each finite classical group $G$, we classify the subgroups of $G$ which act transitively on a $G$-invariant set of subspaces of the natural module, where the subspaces are either totally isotropic or nondegenerate. Our proof uses the classification of the maximal factorisations of almost simple groups. As a first application of these results we classify all point-transitive subgroups of automorphisms of finite thick generalised quadrangles.
Complexes, Graphs, Homotopy, Products and Shannon Capacity
A finite abstract simplicial complex G defines the Barycentric refinement graph phi(G) = (G,{ (a,b), a subset b or b subset a }) and the connection graph psi(G) = (G,{ (a,b), a intersected with b not empty }). We note here that both functors phi and psi from complexes to graphs are invertible on the image (Theorem 1) and that G,phi(G),psi(G) all have the same automorphism group and that the Cartesian product of G corresponding to the Stanley-Reisner product of phi(G) and the strong Shannon product of psi(G), have the product automorphism groups. Second, we see that if G is a Barycentric refinement, then phi(G) and psi(G) are graph homotopic (Theorem 2). Third, if gamma is the geometric realization functor, assigning to a complex or to a graph the geometric realization of its clique complex, then gamma(G) and gamma(phi(G)) and gamma(psi(G)) are all classically homotopic for a Barycentric refined simplicial complex G (Theorem 3). The Barycentric assumption is necessary in Theorem 2 and 3. There is compatibility with Cartesian products of complexes which manifests in the strong graph product of connection graphs: if two graphs A,A' are homotopic and B,B' are homotopic, then A . B is homotopic to A' . B' (Theorem 4) leading to a commutative ring of homotopy classes of graphs. Finally, we note (Theorem 5) that for all simplicial complexes G as well as product G=G_1 x G_2 ... x G_k, the Shannon capacity Theta(psi(G)) of psi(G) is equal to the number m of zero-dimensional sets in G. An explicit Lowasz umbrella in R^m leads to the Lowasz number theta(G) leq m and so Theta(psi(G))=theta(psi(G))=m making Theta compatible with disjoint union addition and strong multiplication.

We show that, for every transitive group $G$ of degree $n\ge 2$, the largest abelian quotient of $G$ has cardinality at most $4^{n/\sqrt{\log_2 n}}$. This gives a positive answer to a 1989 outstanding question of László Kovács and Cheryl Praeger.
Inscribable fans I: Inscribed cones and virtual polytopes

We investigate polytopes inscribed into a sphere that are normally equivalent (or strongly isomorphic) to a given polytope $P$. We show that the associated space of polytopes, called the inscribed cone of $P$, is closed under Minkowski addition. Inscribed cones are interpreted as type cones of ideal hyperbolic polytopes and as deformation spaces of Delaunay subdivisions. In particular, testing if there is an inscribed polytope normally equivalent to $P$ is polynomial time solvable.
Normal equivalence is decided on the level of normal fans and we study the structure of inscribed cones for various classes of polytopes and fans, including simple, simplicial, and even. We classify (virtually) inscribable fans in dimension $2$ as well as inscribable permutahedra and nestohedra.
A second goal of the paper is to introduce inscribed virtual polytopes. Polytopes with a fixed normal fan $\mathcal{N}$ form a monoid with respect to Minkowski addition and the associated Grothendieck group is called the type space of $\mathcal{N}$. Elements of the type space correspond to formal Minkowski differences and are naturally equipped with vertices and hence with a notion of inscribability. We show that inscribed virtual polytopes form a subgroup, which can be non-trivial even if $\mathcal{N}$ does not have actual inscribed polytopes.
We relate inscribed virtual polytopes to routed particle trajectories, that is, piecewise-linear trajectories of particles in a ball with restricted directions. The state spaces gives rise to connected groupoids generated by reflections, called reflection groupoids. The endomorphism groups of reflection groupoids can be thought of as discrete holonomy groups of the trajectories and we determine when they are reflection groups.
The hull metric on Coxeter groups

We reinterpret an inequality, due originally to Sidorenko, for linear extensions of posets in terms of convex subsets of the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$. We conjecture that the analogous inequalities hold in arbitrary (not-necessarily-finite) Coxeter groups $W$, and prove this for the hyperoctahedral groups $B_n$ and all right-angled Coxeter groups. Our proof for $B_n$ (and new proof for $\mathfrak{S}_n$) use a combinatorial insertion map closely related to the well-studied promotion operator on linear extensions; this map may be of independent interest. We also note that the inequalities in question can be interpreted as a triangle inequalities, so that convex hulls can be used to define a new invariant metric on $W$ whenever our conjecture holds. Geometric properties of this metric are an interesting direction for future research.

The distribution of Coxeter descents and block number over the set of fully commutative elements in the hyperoctahedral group $B_n$, $\FC(B_n)$, is studied in this paper. We prove that the associated Chow quasi-symmetric generating function is equal to a non-negative sum of products of two Schur functions. The proof involves a decomposition of $\FC(B_n)$ into a disjoint union of two-sided Barbash-Vogan combinatorial cells, a type $B$ extension of Rubey's descent preserving involution on $321$-avoiding permutations and a detailed study of the intersection of $\FC(B_n)$ with $S_n$-cosets which yields a new decomposition of $\FC(B_n)$ into disjoint subsets called fibers. We also compare two different type $B$ Schur-positivity notions, arising from works of Chow and Poirier
Kohnert's rule for flagged Schur modules

Flagged Schur modules generalize the irreducible representations of the general linear group under the action of the Borel subalgebra. Their characters include many important generalizations of Schur polynomials, such as Demazure characters, flagged skew Schur polynomials, and Schubert polynomials. In this paper, we prove the characters of flagged Schur modules can be computed using a simple combinatorial algorithm due to Kohnert if and only if the indexing diagram is northwest. This gives a new proof that characters of flagged Schur modules are nonnegative sums of Demazure characters and gives a representation theoretic interpretation for Kohnert polynomials.
Universality for random permutations and some other groups

We present some Markovian approaches to prove universality results for some functions on the symmetric group. Some of those statistics are already studied in [Kammoun, 2018, 2020] but not the general case. We prove, in particular, that the number of occurrences of a vincular patterns satisfies a CLT for conjugation invariant random permutations with few cycles and we improve the results already known for the longest increasing subsequence. The second approach is a suggestion of a generalization to other random permutations and other sets having a similar structure than the symmetric group.
COMPACT: Concurrent or Ordered Matrix-based Packing Arrangement Computation Technique

Packing optimization is a prevalent problem that necessitates robust and efficient algorithms that are also simple to implement. One group of approaches is the raster methods, which rely on approximating the objects with pixelated representations. Although they are versatile in treating irregular geometries, the raster methods received limited attention in solving problems involving rotatable objects, where available studies generally analyze only right-angled rotations. In addition, raster approximation allows the use of unique performance metrics and indirect consideration of constraints, which have not been exploited in the literature. This study presents the new Concurrent or Ordered Matrix-based Packing Arrangement Computation Technique (COMPACT). The method relies on raster representations of the objects that can be rotated by arbitrary angles, unlike the right-angled rotation restrictions imposed in many existing packing optimization studies based on raster methods. The raster approximations are obtained through loop-free operations that improve efficiency. Besides, a novel performance metric is introduced, which favors efficient filling of the available space by maximizing the internal contact between the objects as well as the contact between the objects and domain boundaries. Moreover, the objective functions are exploited to discard overlap and overflow constraints and enable the use of unconstrained optimization methods. Several test problems involving concurrent and ordered packing of multiple rectangular and circular objects into square bins are investigated. The results show that the proposed technique performs effectively in determining the packing arrangements.
Point-primitive generalised hexagons and octagons and projective linear groups

We discuss recent progress on the problem of classifying point-primitive generalised polygons. In the case of generalised hexagons and generalised octagons, this has reduced the problem to primitive actions of almost simple groups of Lie type. To illustrate how the natural geometry of these groups may be used in this study, we show that if $\mathcal{S}$ is a finite thick generalised hexagon or octagon with $G \leqslant{\rm Aut}(\mathcal{S})$ acting point-primitively and the socle of $G$ isomorphic to ${\rm PSL}_n(q)$ where $n \geqslant 2$, then the stabiliser of a point acts irreducibly on the natural module. We describe a strategy to prove that such a generalised hexagon or octagon $\mathcal{S}$ does not exist.

We investigate $p$-ary $t$-designs which are simultaneously designs for all $t$, which we call universal $p$-ary designs. Null universal designs are well understood due to Gordon James via the representation theory of the symmetric group. We study non-null designs and determine necessary and sufficient conditions on the coefficients for such a design to exist. This allows us to classify all universal designs, up to similarity.
The automorphism group of the random poset does not admit a generic pair
We show that the conjugacy class of every pair of automoprhisms of the random poset is meager. This answers a question of Truss; see also Kuske-Truss.
EDIT. Work in progress, at the moment there is a gap in the proof of Theorem 2.

We prove universal (case-free) formulas for the weighted enumeration of factorizations of Coxeter elements into products of reflections valid in any well-generated reflection group $W$, in terms of the spectrum of an associated operator, the $W$-Laplacian. This covers in particular all finite Coxeter groups. The results of this paper include generalizations of the Matrix Tree and Matrix Forest theorems to reflection groups, and cover reduced (shortest length) as well as arbitrary length factorizations.
Our formulas are relative to a choice of weighting system that consists of $n$ free scalar parameters and is defined in terms of a tower of parabolic subgroups. To study such systems we introduce (a class of) variants of the Jucys-Murphy elements for every group, from which we define a new notion of `tower equivalence' of virtual characters. A main technical point is to prove the tower equivalence between virtual characters naturally appearing in the problem, and exterior products of the reflection representation of $W$.
Finally we study how this $W$-Laplacian matrix we introduce can be used in other problems in Coxeter combinatorics. We explain how it defines analogues of trees for $W$ and how it relates them to Coxeter factorizations, we give new numerological identities between the Coxeter number of $W$ and those of its parabolic subgroups, and finally, when $W$ is a Weyl group, we produce a new, explicit formula for the volume of the corresponding root zonotope.
Derangements and the $p$-adic incomplete gamma function
We introduce a $p$-adic analogue of the incomplete gamma function. We also introduce quantities ($m$-values) associated to a function on natural numbers and prove a new characterization of $p$-adic continuity for functions with $p$-integral $m$-values. Combinatorial interpretations for the integral values of the incomplete gamma function and functions with $m$-values zero or one are obtained, which show that these functions count derangements in generalized symmetric groups and permutations with restricted cycle lengths.
Between the enhanced power graph and the commuting graph

The purpose of this note is to define a graph whose vertex set is a finite group $G$, whose edge set is contained in that of the commuting graph of $G$ and contains the enhanced power graph of $G$. We call this graph the deep commuting graph of $G$. Two elements of $G$ are joined in the deep commuting graph if and only if their inverse images in every central extension of $G$ commute.
We give conditions for the graph to be equal to either of the enhanced power graph and the commuting graph, and show that the automorphism group of $G$ acts as automorphisms of the deep commuting graph.
