Representation theory of finite groups through (basic) algebraic geometry
We introduce a new approach to representation theory of finite groups that uses some basic algebraic geometry and allows to do all the theory without using characters. With this approach, to any finite group $G$ we associate a finite number of points and show that any field containing the coordinates of those points works fine as the ground field for the representations of $G$. We apply this point of view to the symmetric group $S_d$, finding easy equations for the different symmetries of functions in $d$ variables. As a byproduct, we give an easy proof of a recent result by Tocino that states that the hyperdeterminant of a $d$-dimensional matrix is zero for all but two types of symmetry.
Calibrated representations of two boundary Temperley-Lieb algebras

The two boundary Temperley-Lieb algebra $TL_k$ arises in the transfer matrix formulation of lattice models in Statistical Mechanics, in particular in the introduction of integrable boundary terms to the six-vertex model. In this paper, we classify and study the calibrated representations---those for which all the Murphy elements (integrals) are simultaneously diagonalizable---which, in turn, corresponds to diagonalizing the transfer matrix in the associated model. Our approach is founded upon the realization of $TL_k$ as a quotient of the type $C_k$ affine Hecke algebra $H_k$. In previous work, we studied this Hecke algebra via its presentation by braid diagrams, tensor space operators, and related combinatorial constructions. That work is directly applied herein to give a combinatorial classification and construction of all irreducible calibrated $TL_k$-modules and explain how these modules also arise from a Schur-Weyl duality with the quantum group $U_q\mathfrak{gl}_2$.

We introduce an algorithmic framework to investigate spherical and geodesic growth series of braid groups relatively to the Artin's or Birman-Ko-Lee's generators. We present our experimentations in the case of three and four strands and conjecture rational expressions for the spherical growth series with respect to the Birman-Ko-Lee's generators.
Khovanskii's theorem and effective results on sumset structure
A remarkable theorem due to Khovanskii asserts that for any finite subset $A$ of an abelian group, the cardinality of the $h$-fold sumset $hA$ grows like a polynomial for all sufficiently large $h$. Currently, neither the polynomial nor what sufficiently large means are understood. In this paper we obtain an effective version of Khovanskii's theorem for any $A \subset \mathbb{Z}^d$ whose convex hull is a simplex; previously, such results were only available for $d=1$. Our approach gives information about not just the cardinality of $hA$, but also its structure, and we prove two effective theorems describing $hA$ as a set: one answering a recent question posed by Granville and Shakan, the other a Brion-type formula that provides a compact description of $hA$ for all large $h$. As a further illustration of our approach, we derive a completely explicit formula for $|hA|$ whenever $A \subset \mathbb{Z}^d$ consists of $d+2$ points.
Cohomological and geometric invariants of simple complexes of groups

We investigate strictly developable simple complexes of groups with arbitrary local groups, or equivalently, group actions admitting a strict fundamental domain. We introduce a new method for computing the cohomology of such groups. We also generalise Bestvina's construction to obtain a polyhedral complex equivariantly homotopy equivalent to the standard development of the lowest possible dimension.
As applications, for a group acting chamber transitively on a building of type $(W,S)$, we show that its Bredon cohomological dimension is equal to the virtual cohomological dimension of $W$ and give a realisation of the building of the lowest possible dimension.
We introduce the notion of a reflection-like action, and use it to give a new family of counterexamples to the strong form of Brown's conjecture on the equality of virtual cohomological dimension and Bredon cohomological dimension for proper actions.
We show that the fundamental group $G$ of a simple complex of groups acts on a tree with stabilisers generating a family of subgroups $\mathcal{F}$ if and only if its Bredon cohomological dimension with respect to $\mathcal{F}$ is at most one. This confirms a folklore conjecture under the assumption that a model for the classifying space $E_{\mathcal{F}}G$ of $G$ for the family $\mathcal{F}$ has a strict fundamental domain.
In order to handle complexes of groups arising from arbitrary group actions, we define a number of combinatorial invariants such as the block poset, which may be of independent interest. We also derive a general formula for Bredon cohomological dimension for a group $G$ admitting a cocompact model for $E_{\mathcal{F}}G$. As a consequence of both, we obtain a simple formula for proper cohomological dimension of $\mathrm{CAT}(0)$ groups whose actions admit a strict fundamental domain.
Path combinatorics and light leaves for quiver Hecke algebras

We recast the classical notion of standard tableaux in an alcove-geometric setting and extend these classical ideas to all reduced paths in our geometry. This broader path-perspective is essential for implementing the higher categorical ideas of Elias--Williamson in the setting of quiver Hecke algebras. Our first main result is the construction of light leaves bases of quiver Hecke algebras. These bases are richer and encode more structural information than their classical counterparts, even in the case of the symmetric groups. Our second main result provides path-theoretic generators for the Bott--Samelson truncation of the quiver Hecke algebra.
Linear relations with disjoint supports and average sizes of kernels

We study the effects of imposing linear relations within modules of matrices on average sizes of kernels. The relations that we consider can be described combinatorially in terms of partial colourings of grids. The cells of these grids correspond to positions in matrices and each defining relation involves all cells of a given colour. We prove that imposing such relations arising from "admissible" partial colourings has no effect on average sizes of kernels over finite quotients of discrete valuation rings. This vastly generalises the known fact that average sizes of kernels of general square and traceless matrices of the same size coincide over such rings. As a group-theoretic application, we explicitly determine zeta functions enumerating conjugacy classes of finite $p$-groups derived from free class-$3$-nilpotent groups for $p \geqslant 5$.

In this paper, we resolve a conjecture of Green and Liebeck [Disc. Math., 343 (8):117119, 2019] on codes in $PGL(2,q)$. To be specific, we show that: if $D$ is a dihedral subgroup of order $2(q+1)$ in $G=PGL(2,q)$, and $A=\{g\in G: g^{q+1}= 1,\, g^2\ne 1 \}$, then $λG=A\cdot D$, where $λ=q$ or $q-1$ according as $q$ is even or odd.
On triangles in derangement graphs

Given a permutation group $G$, the derangement graph $Γ_G$ of $G$ is the Cayley graph with connection set the set of all derangements of $G$. We prove that, when $G$ is transitive of degree at least $3$, $Γ_G$ contains a triangle.
The motivation for this work is the question of how large can be the ratio of the independence number of $Γ_G$ to the size of the stabilizer of a point in $G$. We give examples of transitive groups where this ratio is maximum.
Delandtsheer--Doyen parameters for block-transitive point-imprimitive 2-designs

Delandtsheer and Doyen bounded, in terms of the block size, the number of points of a point-imprimitive, block-transitive 2-design. To do this they introduced two integer parameters, m and n, now called Delandtsheer--Doyen parameters, linking the block size with the parameters of an associated imprimitivity system on points. We show that the Delandtsheer--Doyen parameters provide upper bounds on the permutation ranks of the groups induced on the imprimitivity system and on a class of the system. We explore extreme cases where these bounds are attained, give a new construction for a family of designs achieving these bounds, and pose several open questions concerning the Delandtsheer--Doyen parameters.

Huang proved that every set of more than half the vertices of the $d$-dimensional hypercube $Q_d$ induces a subgraph of maximum degree at least $\sqrt{d}$, which is tight by a result of Chung, Füredi, Graham, and Seymour. Huang asked whether similar results can be obtained for other highly symmetric graphs.
First, we present three infinite families of Cayley graphs of unbounded degree that contain induced subgraphs of maximum degree $1$ on more than half the vertices. In particular, this refutes a conjecture of Potechin and Tsang, for which first counterexamples were shown recently by Lehner and Verret. The first family consists of dihedrants and contains a sporadic counterexample encountered earlier by Lehner and Verret. The second family are star graphs, these are edge-transitive Cayley graphs of the symmetric group. All members of the third family are $d$-regular containing an induced matching on a $\frac{d}{2d-1}$-fraction of the vertices. This is largest possible and answers a question of Lehner and Verret.
Second, we consider Huang's lower bound for graphs with subcubes and show that the corresponding lower bound is tight for products of Coxeter groups of type $\mathbf{A_n}$, $\mathbf{I_2}(2k+1)$, and most exceptional cases. We believe that Coxeter groups are a suitable generalization of the hypercube with respect to Huang's question.
Finally, we show that induced subgraphs on more than half the vertices of Levi graphs of projective planes and of the Ramanujan graphs of Lubotzky, Phillips, and Sarnak have unbounded degree. This gives classes of Cayley graphs with properties similar to the ones provided by Huang's results. However, in contrast to Coxeter groups these graphs have no subcubes.
Set Partition Patterns and the Dimension Index
The notion of containment and avoidance provides a natural partial ordering on set partitions. Work of Sagan and of Goyt has led to enumerative results in avoidance classes of set partitions, which were refined by Dahlberg et al. through the use of combinatorial statistics. We continue this work by computing the distribution of the dimension index (a statistic arising from the supercharacter theory of finite groups) across certain avoidance classes of partitions. In doing so we obtain a novel connection between noncrossing partitions and 321-avoiding permutations, as well as connections to many other combinatorial objects such as Motzkin and Fibonacci polynomials.
E-series of character varieties of non-orientable surfaces

In this paper we are interested in two kinds of (stacky) character varieties associated to a compact non-orientable surface. (A) We consider the quotient stack of the space of representations of the fundamental group of this surface to GL(n). (B) We choose a set of k-punctures on the surface and a generic k-tuple of semisimple conjugacy classes of GL(n), and we consider the stack of anti-invariant local systems on the orientation cover of the surface with local monodromies around the punctures given by the prescribed conjugacy classes. We compute the number of points of these spaces over finite fields from which we get a formula for their E-series (a certain specialization of the mixed Poincaré series). In case (B), we discuss the mixed Poincaré series when the surface is the real projective plane and k=1.
Locally Random Groups

In this work, we will introduce and study the notion of local randomness for compact metric groups. We prove a mixing inequality as well as a product result for locally random groups under an additional dimension condition on the volume of small balls and provide several examples of such groups. In particular, this leads to new examples of groups satisfying such a mixing inequality. In the same context, we will develop a Littlewood-Paley decomposition and explore its connection to the existence of the spectral gap for random walks. Moreover, under the dimension condition alone, we will prove a multi-scale entropy gain result `a la Bourgain-Gamburd and Tao.
On pattern avoidance in matchings and involutions

We study the relationship between two notions of pattern avoidance for involutions in the symmetric group and their restriction to fixed-point-free involutions. The first is classical, while the second appears in the geometry of certain spherical varieties and generalizes the notion of pattern avoidance for perfect matchings studied by Jelínek. The first notion can always be expressed in terms of the second, and we give an effective algorithm to do so. We also give partial results characterizing the families of involutions where the converse holds. As a consequence, we prove two conjectures of McGovern characterizing (rational) smoothness of certain varieties. We also give new enumerative results, and conclude by proposing several lines of inquiry that extend our current work.

In this paper, for any prime $p$, we propose the notion of a $p$-transitive association scheme. This notion aims to generalize the fact that the regular module of a group algebra of a finite group has a unique trivial submodule to the case of the regular modules of modular adjacency algebras. We completely determine the $p$-transitive quasi-thin association schemes and the $p$-transitive association schemes with thin thin residue by their structure theory properties.
Counting Elements on Full Matrix Groups over Finite Field with Prescribed Eigenvalues
In the present article we shown a formula to compute the number of all matrices over the finite field $F$ whit prescribed eigenvalues. Using this formula we obtain one inequality for the number of $(k+1)$-potent elements over finite rings.
Bases of the equivariant cohomologies of regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties

We consider bases for the cohomology space of regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties, consisting of the classes that naturally arise from the Bialynicki-Birula decomposition of the Hessenberg varieties. We give an explicit combinatorial description of the support of each class, which enables us to compute the symmetric group actions on the classes in our bases. We then successfully apply the results to the permutohedral varieties to explicitly write down each class and to construct permutation submodules that constitute summands of a decomposition of cohomology space of each degree. This resolves the problem posed by Stembridge on the geometric construction of permutation module decomposition and also the conjecture posed by Chow on the construction of bases for the equivariant cohomology spaces of permutohedral varieties.

We consider unitals of order $q$ with two points which are centers of translation groups of order $q$. The group $G$ generated by these translations induces a Moufang set on the block joining the two points. We show that $G$ is either $\operatorname{SL}(2,\mathbb{F}_q)$ (as in all classical unitals and also in some non-classical examples), or $\operatorname{PSL}(2,\mathbb{F}_q)$, or a Suzuki or a Ree group. Moreover, $G$ is semi-regular outside the special block.
