The Dirichlet random walk
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this article we define and study a stochastic process on Galoisian covers of compact manifolds. The successive positions of the process are defined recursively by picking a point uniformly in the Dirichlet domain of the previous one. We prove a theorem à la Kesten for such a process: the escape rate of the random walk is positive if and only if the cover is non amenable. We also investigate more in details the case where the deck group is Gromov hyperbolic, showing the almost sure convergence to the boundary of the trajectory as well as a central limit theorem for the escape rate

Convex Hulls of Random Order Types
Published • View PublicationBIB
We establish the following two main results on order types of points in general position in the plane (realizable simple planar order types, realizable uniform acyclic oriented matroids of rank $3$): (a) The number of extreme points in an $n$-point order type, chosen uniformly at random from all such order types, is on average $4+o(1)$. For labeled order types, this number has average $4- \frac{8}{n^2 - n +2}$ and variance at most $3$. (b) The (labeled) order types read off a set of $n$ points sampled independently from the uniform measure on a convex planar domain, smooth or polygonal, or from a Gaussian distribution are concentrated, i.e. such sampling typically encounters only a vanishingly small fraction of all order types of the given size. Result (a) generalizes to arbitrary dimension $d$ for labeled order types with the average number of extreme points $2d+o(1)$ and constant variance. We also discuss to what extent our methods generalize to the abstract setting of uniform acyclic oriented matroids. Moreover, our methods allow to show the following relative of the Erdős-Szekeres theorem: for any fixed $k$, as $n \to \infty$, a proportion $1 - O(1/n)$ of the $n$-point simple order types contain a triangle enclosing a convex $k$-chain over an edge. For the unlabeled case in (a), we prove that for any antipodal, finite subset of the $2$-dimensional sphere, the group of orientation preserving bijections is cyclic, dihedral or one of $A_4$, $S_4$ or $A_5$ (and each case is possible). These are the finite subgroups of $SO(3)$ and our proof follows the lines of their characterization by Felix Klein.

The geometric distribution of Selmer groups of elliptic curves over function fields
Published • View PublicationBIB
Fix a positive integer $n$ and a finite field $\mathbb F_q$. We study the joint distribution of the rank of $E$, the $n$-Selmer group of $E$, and the $n$-torsion in the Tate-Shafarevich group of $E$ as $E$ varies over elliptic curves of fixed height $d \geq 2$ over $\mathbb F_q(t)$. We compute this joint distribution in the large $q$ limit. We also show that the "large $q$, then large height" limit of this distribution agrees with the one predicted by Bhargava-Kane-Lenstra-Poonen-Rains.

Irreducible projective representations of the alternating group which remain irreducible in characteristic 2
Published in Adv. Math. 347 (2020) 107340 • View PublicationBIB
For any finite group G it is an interesting question to ask which ordinary irreducible representations of G remain irreducible in a given characteristic p. We answer this question for p=2 when G is the proper double cover of the alternating group. As a key ingredient in the proof, we prove a formula for the decomposition numbers in Rouquier blocks of double covers of symmetric groups, in terms of Schur P-functions.
Weight $q$-multiplicities for representations of the exceptional Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}_2$
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$, Kostant's weight $q$-multiplicity formula is an alternating sum over the Weyl group whose terms involve the $q$-analog of Kostant's partition function. For $ξ$ (a weight of $\mathfrak{g}$), the $q$-analog of Kostant's partition function is a polynomial-valued function defined by $\wp_q(ξ)=\sum c_i q^i$ where $c_i$ is the number of ways $ξ$ can be written as a sum of $i$ positive roots of $\mathfrak{g}$. In this way, the evaluation of Kostant's weight $q$-multiplicity formula at $q = 1$ recovers the multiplicity of a weight in a highest weight representation of $\mathfrak{g}$. In this paper, we give closed formulas for computing weight $q$-multiplicities in a highest weight representation of the exceptional Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}_2$.
Classification of vertex-transitive digraphs via automorphism group
Published • View PublicationBIB
In the mid-1990s, two groups of authors independently obtained classifications of vertex-transitive graphs whose order is a product of two distinct primes. In the intervening years it has become clear that there is additional information concerning these graphs that would be useful, as well as making explicit the extensions of these results to digraphs. Additionally, there are several small errors in some of the papers that were involved in this classification. The purpose of this paper is to fill in the missing information as well as correct all known errors.

On the Baer-Lovász-Tutte construction of groups from graphs: isomorphism types and homomorphism notions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $p$ be an odd prime. From a simple undirected graph $G$, through the classical procedures of Baer (Trans. Am. Math. Soc., 1938), Tutte (J. Lond. Math. Soc., 1947) and Lovász (B. Braz. Math. Soc., 1989), there is a $p$-group $P_G$ of class $2$ and exponent $p$ that is naturally associated with $G$. Our first result is to show that this construction of groups from graphs respects isomorphism types. That is, given two graphs $G$ and $H$, $G$ and $H$ are isomorphic as graphs if and only if $P_G$ and $P_H$ are isomorphic as groups. Our second contribution is a new homomorphism notion for graphs. Based on this notion, a category of graphs can be defined, and the Baer-Lovász-Tutte construction naturally leads to a functor from this category of graphs to the category of groups.

Expectations of Tutte-related functions of random ranked sets with multiplicities
Published • View PublicationBIB
Employing two models, we show that various counting functions of a random variable defined by restriction or contraction of a ranked set with multiplicity (e.g., classical and arithmetic matroids) have expectations given by the corresponding multivariate Tutte polynomial. The first model is based on a generalization of a convolution formula of Kung (2010), extending from matroids to ranked sets with multiplicities. This model enables us to compute the expectations of many familiar polynomials, such as the chromatic, flow and Ehrhart polynomials, generalizing the classical results of Welsh (1996) on random graphs. The second model is designed to compute the expectations of invariants that are generally not evaluations of the polynomials mentioned above, such as the number of connected components of an intersection of hypersurfaces in an abelian Lie group arrangement, and the number of lattice points in a half-open zonotope. In particular, both models yield new probabilistic interpretations of the arithmetic Tutte polynomial and $G$-Tutte polynomial. A simple, but seems to be new convolution-like formula for the Ehrhart polynomials of lattice zonotopes will also be given.

Brown representability for directed graphs
We prove that any contravariant functor from the homotopy category of finite directed graphs to abelian groups satisfying the additivity axiom and the Mayer-Vietoris axiom is representable.
A Diophantine transport problem from 2016 and its possible solution in 1903
Published in Math. and Education in Math., Proc. of the Forty-ninth Spring Conf. of the Union of Bulgar. Mathematicians, 2020, 89-113 • Search Publication
Motivated by a recent Diophantine transport problem about how to transport profitably a group of persons or objects, we survey classical facts about solving systems of linear Diophantine equations and inequalities in nonnegative integers. We emphasize on the method of Elliott from 1903 and its further developed by MacMahon in his ``$Ω$-Calculus'' or Partition Analysis. As an illustration we obtain the solution of the considered transport problem in terms of a formal power series in several variables which is an expansion of a rational function of a special form.

Absorbing time asymptotics in the oriented swap process
Published • View PublicationBIB
The oriented swap process is a natural directed random walk on the symmetric group that can be interpreted as a multi-species version of the Totally Asymmetric Simple Exclusion Process (TASEP) on a finite interval. An open problem from a 2008 paper of Angel, Holroyd, and Romik asks for the limiting distribution of the absorbing time of the process. We resolve this question by proving that this random variable satisfies GOE Tracy-Widom asymptotics. Our starting point is a distributional identity relating the behavior of the oriented swap process to last passage percolation, conjectured in a recent paper of Bisi, Cunden, Gibbons, and Romik. The main technical tool is a shift-invariance principle for multi-species TASEPs, obtained by exploiting recent results of Borodin, Gorin, and Wheeler for the stochastic colored six-vertex model.

Some new results about a conjecture by Brian Alspach
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we consider the following conjecture, proposed by Brian Alspach, concerning partial sums in finite cyclic groups: given a subset $A$ of $\mathbb{Z}_n\setminus \{0\}$ of size $k$ such that $\sum_{z\in A} z\not= 0$, it is possible to find an ordering $(a_1,\ldots,a_k)$ of the elements of $A$ such that the partial sums $s_i=\sum_{j=1}^i a_j$, $i=1,\ldots,k$, are nonzero and pairwise distinct. This conjecture is known to be true for subsets of size $k\leq 11$ in cyclic groups of prime order. Here, we extend such result to any torsion-free abelian group and, as a consequence, we provide an asymptotic result in $\mathbb{Z}_n$. We also consider a related conjecture, originally proposed by Ronald Graham: given a subset $A$ of $\mathbb{Z}_p\setminus\{0\}$, where $p$ is a prime, there exists an ordering of the elements of $A$ such that the partial sums are all distinct. Working with the methods developed by Hicks, Ollis and Schmitt, based on the Alon's combinatorial Nullstellensatz, we prove the validity of such conjecture for subsets $A$ of size $12$.
A sharp inequality for the variance with respect to the Ewens Sampling Formula
The variance of a linear statistic defined on the symmetric group endowed with the Ewens probability is examined. Despite the dependence of the summands, it can be bounded from above by a constant multiple of the sum of variances. We find the exact value of this constant. The analysis of the appearing quadratic forms and eigenvalue search is built upon the exponential matrices and discrete Hahn's polynomials.

Extremal Khovanov homology and the girth of a knot
We utilize relations between Khovanov and chromatic graph homology to determine extreme Khovanov groups and corresponding coefficients of the Jones polynomial. The extent to which chromatic homology and chromatic polynomial can be used to compute integral Khovanov homology of a link depends on the maximal girth of its all-positive graphs. In this paper we also define the girth of a link, discuss relations to other knot invariants, and the possible values for girth. Analyzing girth leads to a description of possible all-A state graphs of any given link; e.g., if a link has a diagram such that the girth of the corresponding all-A graph is equal to $\ell>2$, than the girth of the link is equal to $\ell.$

In this paper, based on the embedded homology groups of hypergraphs defined in \cite{h1}, we define the product of hypergraphs and prove the corresponding Künneth formula of hypergraphs which can be generalized to the Künneth formula for the embedded homology of graded subsets of chain complexes with coefficients in a principal ideal domain.

Finite cubic graphs admitting an cyclic group of automorphisms with at most three orbits on vertices
The theory of voltage graphs has become a standard tool in the study graphs admitting a semiregular group of automorphisms. We introduce the notion of a cyclic generalised voltage graph to extend the scope of this theory to graphs admitting a cyclic group of automorphism that may not be semiregular. We use this new tool to classify all cubic graphs admitting a cyclic group of automorphisms with at most three vertex-orbits and we characterise vertextransitivity for each of these classes. In particular, we show that a cubic vertex-transitive graph admitting a cyclic group of automorphisms with at most three orbits on vertices either belongs to one of 5 infinite families or is isomorphic to the well-know Tutte-Coxeter graph.

Quasi-symmetric designs on 56 points
Published in Advances in Mathematics of Communications 15 (2021), Issue 4, 633-646 • View PublicationBIB
Computational techniques for the construction of quasi-symmetric block designs are explored and applied to the case with $56$ points. One new $(56,16,18)$ and many new $(56,16,6)$ designs are discovered, and non-existence of $(56,12,9)$ and $(56,20,19)$ designs with certain automorphism groups is proved. The number of known symmetric $(78,22,6)$ designs is also significantly increased.

Pólya enumeration theorems in algebraic geometry
Published • View PublicationBIB
We generalize a formula due to Macdonald that relates the singular Betti numbers of $X^{n}/G$ to those of $X$, where $X$ is a compact manifold and $G$ is any subgroup of the symmetric group $S_{n}$ acting on $X^{n}$ by permuting coordinates. Our result is completely axiomatic: in a general setting, given an endomorphism on the cohomology $H^{\bullet}(X)$, it explains how we can explicitly relate the Lefschetz series of the induced endomorphism on $H^{\bullet}(X^{n})^{G}$ to that of the given endomorphism on $H^{\bullet}(X)$ in the presence of the Künneth formula with respect to a cup product. For example, when $X$ is a compact manifold, we take the Lefschetz series given by the singular cohomology with rational coefficients. On the other hand, when $X$ is a projective variety over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_{q}$, we use the $l$-adic étale cohomology with a suitable choice of prime number $l$. We also explain how our formula generalizes the Pólya enumeration theorem, a classical theorem in combinatorics that counts colorings of a graph up to given symmetries, where $X$ is taken to be a finite set of colors. When $X$ is a smooth projective variety over $\mathbb{C}$, our formula also generalizes a result of Cheah that relates the Hodge numbers of $X^{n}/G$ to those of $X$. We will also see that our result generalizes the following facts: 1. the generating function of the Poincaré polynomials of symmetric powers of a compact manifold $X$ is rational; 2. the generating function of the Hodge-Deligne polynomials of symmetric powers of a smooth projective variety $X$ over $\mathbb{C}$ is rational; 3. the zeta series of a projective variety $X$ over $\mathbb{F}_{q}$ is rational. We also prove analogous rationality results when we replace $S_{n}$ with $A_{n}$, alternating groups.

Unitary Signings and Induced Subgraphs of Cayley Graphs of $\mathbb{Z}_2^{n}$
Published in Advances in Combinatorics, 2020:11 • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a Cayley graph of the elementary abelian $2$-group $\mathbb{Z}_2^{n}$ with respect to a set $S$ of size $d$. We prove that for any such $G, S$ and $d$, the maximum degree of any induced subgraph of $G$ on any set of more than half the vertices is at least $\sqrt d$. This is deduced from the recent breakthrough result of Huang who proved the above for the $n$-hypercube $Q^n$, in which the set of generators $S$ is the set of all vectors of Hamming weight $1$. Motivated by his method we define and study unitary signings of adjacency matrices of graphs, and compare them to the orthogonal signings of Huang. As a byproduct, we answer a recent question of Belardo et. al. about the spectrum of signed $5$-regular graphs.
Groups of automorphisms of Riemann surfaces and maps of genus $p+1$ where $p$ is prime
Published • View PublicationBIB
We classify compact Riemann surfaces of genus $g$, where $g-1$ is a prime $p$, which have a group of automorphisms of order $ρ(g-1)$ for some integer $ρ\ge 1$, and determine isogeny decompositions of the corresponding Jacobian varieties. This extends results of Belolipetzky and the second author for $ρ>6$, and of the first and third authors for $ρ=3, 4, 5$ and $6$. As a corollary we classify the orientably regular hypermaps (including maps) of genus $p+1$, together with the non-orientable regular hypermaps of characteristic $-p$, with automorphism group of order divisible by the prime $p$; this extends results of Conder, \v Sirá\v n and Tucker for maps.
