Bipartite graphs and their dessins d'enfants
Each finite and connected bipartite graph induces a finite collection of non-isomorphic dessins d'enfants, that is, $2$-cell embeddings of it into some closed orientable surface. We describe an algorithm to compute all these dessins d'enfants, together their automorphims group, monodromy group and duality type.

Asymptotic analysis of the cyclic structure of permutations
This is my dissertation. Its research object is a symmetric group of permutations acting on a finite set. The density of permutations with a given cycle structure pattern is explored when the group order tends to infinity. New and sharper asymptotic formulas are obtained. The latter are applied in approximations of the cycle vector distribution of a random permutation. The saddle-point method, Lagrange-Bürmann inversion formula, Laplace transformations, and other techniques of complex analysis are applied.

Higher order representation stability and ordered configuration spaces of manifolds
Published in Geom. Topol. 23 (2019) 2519-2591 • View PublicationBIB
Using the language of twisted skew-commutative algebras, we define \emph{secondary representation stability}, a stability pattern in the {\it unstable} homology of spaces that are representation stable in the sense of Church, Ellenberg, and Farb. We show that the rational homology of configuration spaces of ordered points in noncompact manifolds satisfies secondary representation stability. While representation stability for the homology of configuration spaces involves stabilizing by introducing a point ``near infinity,'' secondary representation stability involves stabilizing by introducing a pair of orbiting points -- an operation that relates homology groups in different homological degrees. This result can be thought of as a representation-theoretic analogue of \emph{secondary homological stability} in the sense of Galatius, Kupers, and Randal-Williams. In the course of the proof we establish some additional results: we give a new characterization of the homology of the complex of injective words, and we give a new proof of integral representation stability for configuration spaces of noncompact manifolds, extending previous results to nonorientable manifolds.

Local Picard Group of Binoids and Their Algebras
We begin by introducing schemes of binoids, invertible $\mathcal{O}_M$-sets and cohomology of sheaves of abelian groups defined on schemes of binoids. We define the so-called punctured combinatorial Čech-Picard complex, whose first cohomology computes $\mathrm{Pic}^{\mathrm{loc}}(M)$, the local Picard group of a binoid. We look then at simplicial binoids, whose spectrum presents very nice combinatorial properties. We prove that the cohomology of a constant sheaf on this punctutured spectra can be computed entirely in terms of simplicial cohomology. Through some other results, we prove that we can compute cohomology of the sheaf of units (and thus the local Picard group) by meaning of reduced simplicial cohomology. We move from combinatorics to algebra and we try to use these tools to understand binoid algebras and cohomology of their sheaf of units. We introduce a new topology, that we call combinatorial topology on $\mathrm{Spec}\mathbb{K}[M]$. In this topology, if $M$ is a reduced, torsion-free and cancellative binoid, we can decompose the sheaf of units of its algebra in a direct sum of a constant part $\mathbb{K}^*$ and of the pushforward of the combinatorial units. We specialize to the case of the Stanley-Reisner rings, for which we are able to prove a vanishing result for the affine case. By meaning of the combinatorial topology we then prove that we can compute the Zariski cohomology of the sheaf of units entirely in terms of simplicial cohomology, both usual and reduced. This ultimately leads to a generalization to any monomial ideal, thus yielding us some purely combinatorial non-vanishing results for $\mathrm{Pic}^{\mathrm{loc}}(\mathbb{K}[M])$ in the last Corollary.

Spherically Symmetric Random Permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider random permutations which are spherically symmetric with respect to a metric on the symmetric group $S_n$ and are consistent as $n$ varies. The extreme infinitely spherically symmetric permutation-valued processes are identified for the Hamming, Kendall-tau and Caley metrics. The proofs in all three cases are based on a unified approach through stochastic monotonicity.

Ordered set partitions and the 0-Hecke algebra

Let the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$ act on the polynomial ring $\mathbb{Q}[\mathbf{x}_n] = \mathbb{Q}[x_1, \dots, x_n]$ by variable permutation. The coinvariant algebra is the graded $\mathfrak{S}_n$-module $R_n := {\mathbb{Q}[\mathbf{x}_n]} / {I_n}$, where $I_n$ is the ideal in $\mathbb{Q}[\mathbf{x}_n]$ generated by invariant polynomials with vanishing constant term. Haglund, Rhoades, and Shimozono introduced a new quotient $R_{n,k}$ of the polynomial ring $\mathbb{Q}[\mathbf{x}_n]$ depending on two positive integers $k \leq n$ which reduces to the classical coinvariant algebra of the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$ when $k = n$. The quotient $R_{n,k}$ carries the structure of a graded $\mathfrak{S}_n$-module; Haglund et. al. determine its graded isomorphism type and relate it to the Delta Conjecture in the theory of Macdonald polynomials. We introduce and study a related quotient $S_{n,k}$ of $\mathbb{F}[\mathbf{x}_n]$ which carries a graded action of the 0-Hecke algebra $H_n(0)$, where $\mathbb{F}$ is an arbitrary field. We prove 0-Hecke analogs of the results of Haglund, Rhoades, and Shimozono. In the classical case $k = n$, we recover earlier results of Huang concerning the 0-Hecke action on the coinvariant algebra.

Faces of highest weight modules and the universal Weyl polyhedron
Published in Advances in Mathematics 319 (2017), 111-152 • View PublicationBIB
Let $V$ be a highest weight module over a Kac-Moody algebra $\mathfrak{g}$, and let conv $V$ denote the convex hull of its weights. We determine the combinatorial isomorphism type of conv $V$, i.e. we completely classify the faces and their inclusions. In the special case where $\mathfrak{g}$ is semisimple, this brings closure to a question studied by Cellini-Marietti [IMRN 2015] for the adjoint representation, and by Khare [J. Algebra 2016; Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 2017] for most modules. The determination of faces of finite-dimensional modules up to the Weyl group action and some of their inclusions also appears in previous work of Satake [Ann. of Math. 1960], Borel-Tits [IHES Publ. Math. 1965], Vinberg [Izv. Akad. Nauk 1990], and Casselman [Austral. Math. Soc. 1997]. For any subset of the simple roots, we introduce a remarkable convex cone which we call the universal Weyl polyhedron, which controls the convex hulls of all modules parabolically induced from the corresponding Levi factor. Namely, the combinatorial isomorphism type of the cone stores the classification of faces for all such highest weight modules, as well as how faces degenerate as the highest weight gets increasingly singular. To our knowledge, this cone is new in finite and infinite type. We further answer a question of Michel Brion, by showing that the localization of conv $V$ along a face is always the convex hull of the weights of a parabolically induced module. Finally, as we determine the inclusion relations between faces representation-theoretically from the set of weights, without recourse to convexity, we answer a similar question for highest weight modules over symmetrizable quantum groups.
Hessenberg varieties and hyperplane arrangements
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a semisimple complex linear algebraic group $G$ and a lower ideal $I$ in positive roots of $G$, three objects arise: the ideal arrangement $\mathcal{A}_I$, the regular nilpotent Hessenberg variety $\mbox{Hess}(N,I)$, and the regular semisimple Hessenberg variety $\mbox{Hess}(S,I)$. We show that a certain graded ring derived from the logarithmic derivation module of $\mathcal{A}_I$ is isomorphic to $H^*(\mbox{Hess}(N,I))$ and $H^*(\mbox{Hess}(S,I))^W$, the invariants in $H^*(\mbox{Hess}(S,I))$ under an action of the Weyl group $W$ of $G$. This isomorphism is shown for general Lie type, and generalizes Borel's celebrated theorem showing that the coinvariant algebra of $W$ is isomorphic to the cohomology ring of the flag variety $G/B$. This surprising connection between Hessenberg varieties and hyperplane arrangements enables us to produce a number of interesting consequences. For instance, the surjectivity of the restriction map $H^*(G/B)\to H^*(\mbox{Hess}(N,I))$ announced by Dale Peterson and an affirmative answer to a conjecture of Sommers-Tymoczko are immediate consequences. We also give an explicit ring presentation of $H^*(\mbox{Hess}(N,I))$ in types $B$, $C$, and $G$. Such a presentation was already known in type $A$ or when $\mbox{Hess}(N,I)$ is the Peterson variety. Moreover, we find the volume polynomial of $\mbox{Hess}(N,I)$ and see that the hard Lefschetz property and the Hodge-Riemann relations hold for $\mbox{Hess}(N,I)$, despite the fact that it is a singular variety in general.

Drinfeld Orbifold Algebras for Symmetric Groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
Drinfeld orbifold algebras are a type of deformation of skew group algebras generalizing graded Hecke algebras of interest in representation theory, algebraic combinatorics, and noncommutative geometry. In this article, we classify all Drinfeld orbifold algebras for symmetric groups acting by the natural permutation representation. This provides, for nonabelian groups, infinite families of examples of Drinfeld orbifold algebras that are not graded Hecke algebras. We include explicit descriptions of the maps recording commutator relations and show there is a one-parameter family of such maps supported only on the identity and a three-parameter family of maps supported only on 3-cycles and 5-cycles. Each commutator map must satisfy properties arising from a Poincaré-Birkhoff-Witt condition on the algebra, and our analysis of the properties illustrates reduction techniques using orbits of group element factorizations and intersections of fixed point spaces.

Canonical Functions: a proof via topological dynamics
Published • View PublicationBIB
Canonical functions are a powerful concept with numerous applications in the study of groups, monoids, and clones on countable structures with Ramsey-type properties. In this short note, we present a proof of the existence of canonical functions in certain sets using topological dynamics, providing a shorter alternative to the original combinatorial argument. We moreover present equivalent algebraic characterisations of canonicity.

On the Fractional fixing number of graphs
An automorphism group of a graph $G$ is the set of all permutations of the vertex set of $G$ that preserve adjacency and non adjacency of vertices in a graph. A fixing set of a graph $G$ is a subset of vertices of $G$ such that only the trivial automorphism fixes every vertex in $S$. Minimum cardinality of a fixing set of $G$ is called the fixing number of $G$. In this article, we define a fractional version of the fixing number of a graph. We formulate the problem of finding the fixing number of a graph as an integer programming problem. It is shown that a relaxation of this problem leads to a linear programming problem and hence to a fractional version of the fixing number of a graph. We also characterize the graphs $G$ with the fractional fixing number $\frac{|V(G)|}{2}$ and the fractional fixing number of some families of graphs is also obtained.

Commuting involution graphs of linear groups
In this paper, we determine the diameter of the commuting involution graphs of special and general linear groups over an arbitrary field. It turns out that our results also determine the diameter for certain projective special linear groups over finite fields. Moreover, we find the diameter of the commuting graphs of general linear groups on the set of all involutions over a field of characteristic 2, which completes the diameter of general linear groups on the set of all involutions. As an application, we classify the structure of the four-dimensional linear groups over finite fields according to the distance from a fixed involution.

Cubic edge-transitive bi-$p$-metacirculant
Published • View PublicationBIB
A graph is said to be a bi-Cayley graph over a group H if it admits H as a group of automorphisms acting semiregularly on its vertices with two orbits. For a prime p, we call a bi-Cayley graph over a metacyclic p-group a bi-p-metacirculant. In this paper, the automorphism group of a connected cubic edge-transitive bi-p-metacirculant is characterized for an odd prime p, and the result reveals that a connected cubic edge-transitive bi-p-metacirculant exists only when p=3. Using this, a classification is given of connected cubic edge-transitive bi-Cayley graphs over an inner-abelian metacyclic 3-group. As a result, we construct the first known infinite family of cubic semisymmetric graphs of order twice a 3-power.

Transforming a matrix into a standard form

Eulerian polynomials and descent statistics
Published in Adv. in Appl. Math. 90: 86-144, 2017 • View PublicationBIB
We prove several identities expressing polynomials counting permutations by various descent statistics in terms of Eulerian polynomials, extending results of Stembridge, Petersen, and Brändén. Additionally, we find $q$-exponential generating functions for $q$-analogues of these descent statistic polynomials that also keep track of the inversion number or inverse major index. We also present identities relating several of these descent statistic polynomials to refinements of type B Eulerian polynomials and flag descent polynomials by the number of negative letters of a signed permutation. Our methods include permutation enumeration techniques involving noncommutative symmetric functions, Brändén's modified Foata-Strehl action, and a group action of Petersen on signed permutations. Notably, the modified Foata-Strehl action yields an analogous relation between Narayana polynomials and the joint distribution of the peak number and descent number over 231-avoiding permutations, which we also interpret in terms of binary trees and Dyck paths.

A statistical approach to covering lemmas
Published in Eur. J. Comb. 48 (2015), 19-33 • View PublicationBIB
We discuss a statistical variant of Ruzsa's covering lemma and use it to show that if G is an Abelian group of bounded exponent and A in G has |A+A| < K|A| then the subgroup generated by A has size at most exp(O(K log^22K))|A|, where the constant in the big-O depends on the exponent of the group only.
Generating functions and statistics on spaces of maximal tori in classical Lie groups
Published in New York J. Math. 23 (2017) 165-191 • Search Publication
In this paper we use generating function methods to obtain new asymptotic results about spaces of $F$-stable maximal tori in $GL_n(\overline{F_q})$, $Sp_{2n}(\overline{F_q})$, and $SO_{2n+1}(\overline{F_q})$. We recover stability results of Church--Ellenberg--Farb and Jiménez Rolland--Wilson for "polynomial" statistics on these spaces, and we compute explicit formulas for their stable values. We derive a double generating function for the characters of the cohomology of flag varieties in type B/C, which we use to obtain analogs in type B/C of results of Chen: we recover "twisted homological stability" for the spaces of maximal tori in $Sp_{2n}(\mathbb{C})$ and $SO_{2n+1}(\mathbb{C})$, and we compute a generating function for their "stable twisted Betti numbers". We also give a new proof of a result of Lehrer using symmetric function theory.
Arc-transitive digraphs with quasiprimitive local actions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $Γ$ be a finite $G$-vertex-transitive digraph. The in-local action of $(Γ,G)$ is the permutation group $L_-$ induced by the vertex-stabiliser on the set of in-neighbours of $v$. The out-local action $L_+$ is defined analogously. Note that $L_-$ and $L_+$ may not be isomorphic. We thus consider the problem of determining which pairs $(L_-,L_+)$ are possible. We prove some general results, but pay special attention to the case when $L_-$ and $L_+$ are both quasiprimitive. (Recall that a permutation group is quasiprimitive if each of its nontrivial normal subgroups is transitive.) Along the way, we prove a structural result about pairs of finite quasiprimitive groups of the same degree, one being (abstractly) isomorphic to a proper quotient of the other.

Automorphisms of the Cube $n^d$
Published in Discrete mathematics, Vol. 344, Issue 3, 2021 • View PublicationBIB
Consider a hypergraph $H_n^d$ where the vertices are points of the $d$-dimensional combinatorial cube $n^d$ and the edges are all sets of $n$ points such that they are in one line. We study the structure of the group of automorphisms of $H_n^d$, i.e., permutations of points of $n^d$ preserving the edges. In this paper we provide a complete characterization. Moreover, we consider the Colored Cube Isomorphism problem of deciding whether for two colorings of the vertices of $H_n^d$ there exists an automorphism of $H_n^d$ preserving the colors. We show that this problem is ${\sf GI}$-complete.
