We introduce a new one-variable polynomial invariant of graphs, which we call the skew characteristic polynomial. For an oriented simple graph, this is just the characteristic polynomial of its anti-symmetric adjacency matrix. For nonoriented simple graphs the definition is different, but for a certain class of graphs (namely, for intersection graphs of chord diagrams), it gives the same answer if we endow such a graph with an orientation induced by the chord diagram. We prove that this invariant satisfies Vassiliev's $4$-term relations and determines therefore a finite type knot invariant. We investigate the behaviour of the polynomial with respect to the Hopf algebra structure on the space of graphs and show that it takes a constant value on any primitive element in this Hopf algebra. We also provide a two-variable extension of the skew characteristic polynomial to embedded graphs and delta-matroids. The $4$-term relations for the extended polynomial prove that it determines a finite type invariant of multicomponent links.
Powersum Bases in Quasisymmetric Functions and Quasisymmetric Functions in Non-commuting Variables
We introduce new bases for the Hopf algebra of quasisymmetric functions that refine the symmetric powersum basis. These bases are expanded in terms of quasisymmetric monomial functions by using fillings of matrices. We define the analog of these bases in quasisymmetric functions of non-commuting variables. Our new bases have a (shifted) shuffle product and a deconcatenate coproduct. Finally, we describe a change of basis rule from the quasisymmetric powersum basis to the quasisymmetric fundamental basis.
P-partition power sums
We develop the theory of weighted P-partitions, which generalises the theory of P-partitions from labelled posets to weighted labelled posets. We define the related generating functions in the natural way and compute their product, coproduct and other properties. As an application we introduce the basis of combinatorial power sums for the Hopf algebra of quasisymmetric functions and the reverse basis, both of which refine the power sum symmetric functions. These bases share many properties with the type 1 and type 2 quasisymmetric power sums introduced by Ballantine, Daugherty, Hicks, Mason and Niese, and moreover expand into the monomial basis of quasisymmetric functions with nonnegative integer coefficients. We prove formulas for products, coproducts and classical quasisymmetric involutions via the combinatorics of P-partitions, and give combinatorial interpretations for the coefficients when expanded into the monomial and fundamental bases.
From Hopf algebras to rough paths and regularity structures
Lyon's rough paths give an algebraic and analytic framework for Stieltjes integrals in a regime of low regularity where the usual Riemann-Stieltjes integral does not converge. Before we may rigorously define rough paths, we start with the introduction of some basic algebraic terminology. Among them are algebras and coalgebras, two notions which are in some sense dual to each other. As a combination of these notions we obtain bialgebras, and as a special case of them then Hopf algebras, which play a central role in this thesis. After further algebraic preliminaries, we give the examples of Hopf algebras we are interested in. Among them is the example of the polynomial Hopf algebra, whose product is nothing but the usual multiplication of polynomials and whose coproduct can be expressed very simply with the help of a binomial coefficient. We then use the dual pair of tensor Hopf algebras to introduce weakly geometric rough paths, which correspond to notions of Stieltjes integrals satisfying the usual integration by parts rule. For cases like Itô-integration where we need to give up integration by parts, we look at Gubinelli's branched rough paths based on the dual pair of Hopf algebras on trees and forests. Finally, we give some basic concepts of Hairer's theory of regularity structures and use them for a different approach to branched and weakly geometric rough paths. While we first look at a general method described by Hairer to derive a regularity structure from certain Hopf algebras, we then develop a regularity structure based on a formal Picard iteration which is more suitable for dealing with rough differential equations.
This work was written as a master's thesis supervised by Peter Friz and Sylvie Paycha and submitted to TU Berlin on July 29 2016. As of 2021, it does not provide novel research material, but can still be used as an algebra-focussed introduction to the subject.
Kinematic Hopf Algebra for BCJ Numerators in Heavy-Mass Effective Field Theory and Yang-Mills Theory

We present a closed formula for all Bern-Carrasco-Johansson (BCJ) numerators describing $D$-dimensional tree-level scattering amplitudes in a heavy-mass effective field theory with two massive particles and an arbitrary number of gluons. The corresponding gravitational amplitudes obtained via the double copy directly enter the computation of black-hole scattering and gravitational-wave emission. Our construction is based on finding a kinematic algebra for the numerators, which we relate to a quasi-shuffle Hopf algebra. The BCJ numerators thus obtained have a compact form and intriguing features: gauge invariance is manifest, locality is respected for massless exchange, and they contain poles corresponding to massive exchange. Counting the number of terms in a BCJ numerator for $n{-}2$ gluons gives the Fubini numbers $\mathsf{F}_{n-3}$, reflecting the underlying quasi-shuffle Hopf algebra structure. Finally, by considering an appropriate factorisation limit, the massive particles decouple, and we thus obtain a kinematic algebra and all tree-level BCJ numerators for $D$-dimensional pure Yang-Mills theory.
Translations of rough paths in combinatorial Hopf algebras
We generalize Bruned et.al.'s notion of translation in geometric and branched rough paths to a notion of translation in rough paths over any combinatorial Hopf algebra. We show that this notion of translation is equivalent to two bialgebras being in cointeraction, subject to certain additional conditions. We argue that reformulating translations in terms of substitutions, provides simpler conditions for the cointeraction formulation. For the special case where the translation can be obtained from a product, we show how to obtain a description of the dual coaction. As a concrete example, we describe translations in planarly branched rough paths.

Combinatorial Hopf algebras give a linear algebraic structure to infinite families of combinatorial objects, a technique further enriched by the categorification of these structure via the representation theory of families of algebras. This paper examines a fundamental construction in group theory, the direct product, and how it can be used to build representation theoretic Hopf algebras out of towers of groups. A key special case gives us the noncommutative symmetric functions NSym, but there are many things that we can say for the general Hopf algebras, including the structure of their character groups and a formula for the antipode.

Peak algebras in combinatorial Hopf algebras
The peak algebra is originally introduced by Stembridge using enriched $P$-partitions. Using the character theory by Aguiar-Bergeron-Sottile, the peak algebra is also the image of $Θ$, the universal morphism between certain combinatorial Hopf algebras. We extend the notion of peak algebras and theta maps to shuffle, tensor, and symmetric algebras. As examples, we study the peak algebras of symmetric functions in non-commuting variables and the graded associated Hopf algebra on permutations. We also introduce a new shuffle basis of quasi-symmetric functions that its elements are the eigenfunctions of $Θ$. Using this new basis, we show that the peak algebra is the space spanned by the set of shuffle basis elements indexed by compositions whose all parts are odd.

We propose a quantization algebra of the Loday-Ronco Hopf algebra $k[Y^\infty]$, based on the Topological Recursion formula of Eynard and Orantin. We have shown in previous works that the Loday-Ronco Hopf algebra of planar binary trees is a space of solutions for the genus 0 version of Topological Recursion, and that an extension of the Loday Ronco Hopf algebra as to include some new graphs with loops is the correct setting to find a solution space for arbitrary genus. Here we show that this new algebra $k[Y^\infty]_h$ is still a Hopf algebra that can be seen in some sense to be made precise in the text as a quantization of the Hopf algebra of planar binary trees, and that the solution space of Topological Recursion $\mathcal{A}^h_{\text{TopRec}}$ is a subalgebra of a quotient algebra $\mathcal{A}_{\text{Reg}}^h$ obtained from $k[Y^\infty]_h$ that nevertheless doesn't inherit the Hopf algebra structure. We end the paper with a discussion on the cohomology of $\mathcal{A}^h_{\text{TopRec}}$ in low degree.
Hopf algebras of parking functions and decorated planar trees

We construct three new combinatorial Hopf algebras based on the Loday-Ronco operations on planar binary trees. The first and second algebras are defined on planar trees and labeled planar trees extending the Loday-Ronco and Malvenuto-Reutenauer Hopf algebras respectively. We show that the latter is bidendriform which implies that is also free, cofree, and self-dual. The third algebra involves a new visualization of parking functions as decorated binary trees; it is also bidendriform, free, cofree, and self-dual, and therefore abstractly isomorphic to the algebra PQSym of Novelli and Thibon.
We define partial orders on the objects indexing each of these three Hopf algebras, one of which, when restricting to (m+1)-ary trees, coarsens the m-Tamari order of Bergeron and Préville-Ratelle. We show that multiplication of dual fundamental basis elements are given by intervals in each of these orders.
Finally, we use an axiomatized version of the techniques of Aguiar and Sottile on the Malvenuto-Reutenauer Hopf algebra to define a monomial basis on each of our Hopf algebras, and to show that comultiplication is cofree on the monomial elements. This in particular, implies the cofreeness of the Hopf algebra on planar trees. We also find explicit positive formulas for the multiplication on monomial basis and a cancellation-free and grouping-free formula for the antipode of monomial elements.

It is well-known that the antipode $S$ of a commutative or cocommutative Hopf algebra satisfies $S^{2}=\operatorname*{id}$ (where $S^{2}=S\circ S$). Recently, similar results have been obtained by Aguiar, Lauve and Mahajan for connected graded Hopf algebras: Namely, if $H$ is a connected graded Hopf algebra with grading $H=\bigoplus_{n\geq0}H_n$, then each positive integer $n$ satisfies $\left( \operatorname*{id}-S^2\right)^n \left( H_n\right) =0$ and (even stronger) \[ \left( \left( \operatorname{id}+S\right) \circ\left( \operatorname{id}-S^2\right)^{n-1}\right) \left( H_n\right) = 0. \] For some specific $H$'s such as the Malvenuto--Reutenauer Hopf algebra $\operatorname{FQSym}$, the exponents can be lowered.
In this note, we generalize these results in several directions: We replace the base field by a commutative ring, replace the Hopf algebra by a coalgebra (actually, a slightly more general object, with no coassociativity required), and replace both $\operatorname{id}$ and $S^2$ by "coalgebra homomorphisms" (of sorts). Specializing back to connected graded Hopf algebras, we show that the exponent $n$ in the identity $\left( \operatorname{id}-S^2\right) ^n \left( H_n\right) =0$ can be lowered to $n-1$ (for $n>1$) if and only if $\left( \operatorname{id} - S^2\right) \left( H_2\right) =0$. (A sufficient condition for this is that every pair of elements of $H_1$ commutes; this is satisfied, e.g., for $\operatorname{FQSym}$.)
The Eigenvalues of Hyperoctahedral Descent Operators and Applications to Card-Shuffling

We extend an algebra of Mantaci and Reutenauer, acting on the free associative algebra, to a vector space of operators acting on all graded connected Hopf algebras. These operators are convolution products of certain involutions, which we view as hyperoctahedral variants of Patras's descent operators. We obtain the eigenvalues and multiplicities of all our new operators, as well as a basis of eigenvectors for a subclass akin to Adams operations. We outline how to apply this eigendata to study Markov chains, and examine in detail the case of card-shuffles with flips or rotations.

We consider the group $(\mathcal{G},*)$ of unitized multiplicative functions in the incidence algebra of non-crossing partitions, where ``$*$'' denotes the convolution operation. We introduce a larger group $(\widetilde{\mathcal{G}},*)$ of unitized functions from the same incidence algebra, which satisfy a weaker condition of being ``semi-multiplicative''. The natural action of $\widetilde{\mathcal{G}}$ on sequences of multilinear functionals of a non-commutative probability space captures the combinatorics of transitions between moments and some brands of cumulants that are studied in the non-commutative probability literature. We use the framework of $\widetilde{\mathcal{G}}$ in order to explain why the multiplication of free random variables can be very nicely described in terms of Boolean cumulants and more generally in terms of $t$-Boolean cumulants, a one-parameter interpolation between free and Boolean cumulants arising from work of Bozejko and Wysoczanski.
It is known that the group $\mathcal{G}$ can be naturally identified as the group of characters of the Hopf algebra Sym of symmetric functions. We show that $\widetilde{\mathcal{G}}$ can also be identified as group of characters of a Hopf algebra $\mathcal{T}$, which is an incidence Hopf algebra in the sense of Schmitt. Moreover, the inclusion of $\mathcal{G}$ into $\widetilde{\mathcal{G}}$ turns out to be the dual of a natural bialgebra homomorphism from $\mathcal{T}$ onto Sym.

We establish connectedness criteria for graphs associated to monomials in certain quotients of the mod 2 dual Steenrod algebra. We also investigate questions about trees and Hamilton cycles in the context of these graphs. Finally, we improve upon a known connection between the graph theoretic interpretation of the mod 2 dual Steenrod algebra and its structure as a Hopf algebra.

Mason and Remmel introduced a basis for quasisymmetric functions known as the row-strict quasisymmetric Schur functions. This basis is generated combinatorially by fillings of composition diagrams that are analogous to the row-strict tableaux that generate Schur functions. We introduce a modification known as Young row-strict quasisymmetric Schur functions, which are generated by row-strict Young composition fillings. After discussing basic combinatorial properties of these functions, we define a skew Young row-strict quasisymmetric Schur function using the Hopf algebra of quasisymmetric functions and then prove this is equivalent to a combinatorial description. We also provide a decomposition of the skew Young row-strict quasisymmetric Schur functions into a sum of Gessel's fundamental quasisymmetric functions and prove a multiplication rule for the product of a Young row-strict quasisymmetric Schur function and a Schur function.
The "Young" and "reverse" dichotomy of polynomials

A "flip-and-reversal" involution arising in the study of quasisymmetric Schur functions provides a passage between what we term "Young" and "reverse" variants of bases of polynomials or quasisymmetric functions. Building on this perspective, which has found recent application in the study of $q$-analogues of combinatorial Hopf algebras and generalizations of dual immaculate functions, we develop and explore Young analogues of well-known bases for polynomials. We prove several combinatorial formulas for the Young analogue of the key polynomials, show that they form the generating functions for left keys, and provide a representation-theoretic interpretation of Young key polynomials as traces on certain modules. We also give combinatorial formulas for the Young analogues of Schubert polynomials, including their crystal graph structure. We moreover determine the intersections of (reverse) bases and their Young counterparts, further clarifying their relationships to one another.
Basis of totally primitive elements of WQSym

By Foissy's work, the bidendriform structure of the Word Quasisymmetric Functions Hopf algebra (WQSym) implies that it is isomorphic to its dual. However, the only known explicit isomorphism does not respect the bidendriform structure. This structure is entirely determined by so-called totally primitive elements (elements such that the two half-coproducts are 0). In this paper, we construct a basis indexed by a new combinatorial family called biplane forests in bijection with packed words. In this basis, primitive elements are indexed by biplane trees and totally primitive elements by a certain subset of trees. Thus we obtain the first explicit basis for the totally primitive elements of WQSym.

By means of a new notion of subforests of an angularly decorated rooted forest, we give a combinatorial construction of a coproduct on the free Rota-Baxter algebra on angularly decorated rooted forests. We show that this coproduct equips the Rota-Baxter algebra with a bialgebra structure and further a Hopf algebra structure.

The paper follows an operadic approach to provide a bialgebraic description of substitution for Lie-Butcher series. We first show how the well-known bialgebraic description for substitution in Butcher's $B$-series can be obtained from the pre-Lie operad. We then apply the same construction to the post-Lie operad to arrive at a bialgebra $\mathcal{Q}$. By considering a module over the post-Lie operad, we get a cointeraction between $\mathcal{Q}$ and the Hopf algebra $\mathcal{H}_N$ that describes composition for Lie-Butcher series. We use this coaction to describe substitution for Lie-Butcher series.
