Enumeration of linear chord diagrams
A linear chord diagram canonically determines a fatgraph and hence has an associated genus $g$. We compute the natural generating function ${\bf C}_g(z)=\sum_{n\geq 0} {\bf c}_g(n)z^n$ for the number ${\bf c}_g(n)$ of linear chord diagrams of fixed genus $g\geq 1$ with a given number $n\geq 0$ of chords and find the remarkably simple formula ${\bf C}_g(z)=z^{2g}R_g(z) (1-4z)^{{1\over 2}-3g}$, where $R_g(z)$ is a polynomial of degree at most $g-1$ with integral coefficients satisfying $R_g({1\over 4})\neq 0$ and $R_g(0) = {\bf c}_g(2g)\neq 0.$ In particular, ${\bf C}_g(z)$ is algebraic over $\mathbb C(z)$, which generalizes the corresponding classical fact for the generating function ${\bf C}_0(z)$ of the Catalan numbers. As a corollary, we also calculate a related generating function germaine to the enumeration of knotted RNA secondary structures, which is again found to be algebraic.
On bipartite graphs of defect at most 4

We consider the bipartite version of the degree/diameter problem, namely, given natural numbers Δ \geq 2 and D \geq 2, find the maximum number Nb(Δ,D) of vertices in a bipartite graph of maximum degree Δ and diameter D. In this context, the Moore bipartite bound Mb(Δ,D) represents an upper bound for Nb(Δ,D). Bipartite graphs of maximum degree Δ, diameter D and order Mb(Δ,D), called Moore bipartite graphs, have turned out to be very rare. Therefore, it is very interesting to investigate bipartite graphs of maximum degree Δ \geq 2, diameter D \geq 2 and order Mb(Δ,D) - εwith small ε> 0, that is, bipartite (Δ,D,-ε)-graphs. The parameter εis called the defect. This paper considers bipartite graphs of defect at most 4, and presents all the known such graphs. Bipartite graphs of defect 2 have been studied in the past; if Δ \geq 3 and D \geq 3, they may only exist for D = 3. However, when ε> 2 bipartite (Δ,D,-ε)-graphs represent a wide unexplored area. The main results of the paper include several necessary conditions for the existence of bipartite $(Δ,d,-4)$-graphs; the complete catalogue of bipartite (3,D,-ε)-graphs with D \geq 2 and 0 \leq ε\leq 4; the complete catalogue of bipartite (Δ,D,-ε)-graphs with Δ \geq 2, 5 \leq D \leq 187 (D /= 6) and 0 \leq ε\leq 4; and a non-existence proof of all bipartite (Δ,D,-4)-graphs with Δ \geq 3 and odd D \geq 7. Finally, we conjecture that there are no bipartite graphs of defect 4 for Δ \geq 3 and D \geq 5, and comment on some implications of our results for upper bounds of Nb(Δ,D).

In this paper we consider the degree/diameter problem, namely, given natural numbers Δ \geq 2 and D \geq 1, find the maximum number N(Δ,D) of vertices in a graph of maximum degree Δ and diameter D. In this context, the Moore bound M(Δ,D) represents an upper bound for N(Δ,D). Graphs of maximum degree Δ, diameter D and order M(Δ,D), called Moore graphs, turned out to be very rare. Therefore, it is very interesting to investigate graphs of maximum degree Δ \geq 2, diameter D \geq 1 and order M(Δ,D) - ε with small ε > 0, that is, (Δ,D,-ε)-graphs. The parameter ε is called the defect. Graphs of defect 1 exist only for Δ = 2. When ε > 1, (Δ,D,-ε)-graphs represent a wide unexplored area. This paper focuses on graphs of defect 2. Building on the approaches developed in [11] we obtain several new important results on this family of graphs. First, we prove that the girth of a (Δ,D,-2)-graph with Δ \geq 4 and D \geq 4 is 2D. Second, and most important, we prove the non-existence of (Δ,D,-2)-graphs with even Δ \geq 4 and D \geq 4; this outcome, together with a proof on the non-existence of (4, 3,-2)-graphs (also provided in the paper), allows us to complete the catalogue of (4,D,-ε)-graphs with D \geq 2 and 0 \leq ε \leq 2. Such a catalogue is only the second census of (Δ,D,-2)-graphs known at present, the first being the one of (3,D,-ε)-graphs with D \geq 2 and 0 \leq ε \leq 2 [14]. Other results of this paper include necessary conditions for the existence of (Δ,D,-2)-graphs with odd Δ \geq 5 and D \geq 4, and the non-existence of (Δ,D,-2)-graphs with odd Δ \geq 5 and D \geq 5 such that Δ \equiv 0, 2 (mod D).

On variables with few occurrences in conjunctive normal forms
Published in SAT 2011, LNCS 6695, page 33-46 • View Publication • BIB
We consider the question of the existence of variables with few occurrences in boolean conjunctive normal forms (clause-sets). Let mvd(F) for a clause-set F denote the minimal variable-degree, the minimum of the number of occurrences of variables. Our main result is an upper bound mvd(F) <= nM(surp(F)) <= surp(F) + 1 + log_2(surp(F)) for lean clause-sets F in dependency on the surplus surp(F). - Lean clause-sets, defined as having no non-trivial autarkies, generalise minimally unsatisfiable clause-sets. - For the surplus we have surp(F) <= delta(F) = c(F) - n(F), using the deficiency delta(F) of clause-sets, the difference between the number of clauses and the number of variables. - nM(k) is the k-th "non-Mersenne" number, skipping in the sequence of natural numbers all numbers of the form 2^n - 1. We conjecture that this bound is nearly precise for minimally unsatisfiable clause-sets. As an application of the upper bound we obtain that (arbitrary!) clause-sets F with mvd(F) > nM(surp(F)) must have a non-trivial autarky (so clauses can be removed satisfiability-equivalently by an assignment satisfying some clauses and not touching the other clauses). It is open whether such an autarky can be found in polynomial time. As a future application we discuss the classification of minimally unsatisfiable clause-sets depending on the deficiency.

Cycles in Sparse Graphs II
The {\em independence ratio} of a graph $G$ is defined by \[ ι(G) := \sup_{X \subset V(G)} \frac{|X|}{α(X)},\] where $α(X)$ is the independence number of the subgraph of $G$ induced by $X$. The independence ratio is a relaxation of the chromatic number $χ(G)$ in the sense that $χ(G) \geq ι(G)$ for every graph $G$, while for many natural classes of graphs these quantities are almost equal. In this paper, we address two old conjectures of Erdős on cycles in graphs with large chromatic number and a conjecture of Erdős and Hajnal on graphs with infinite chromatic number.

Ramsey-goodness -- and otherwise
Published • View Publication • BIB
A celebrated result of Chvátal, Rödl, Szemerédi and Trotter states (in slightly weakened form) that, for every natural number $Δ$, there is a constant $r_Δ$ such that, for any connected $n$-vertex graph $G$ with maximum degree $Δ$, the Ramsey number $R(G,G)$ is at most $r_Δn$, provided $n$ is sufficiently large. In 1987, Burr made a strong conjecture implying that one may take $r_Δ= Δ$. However, Graham, Rödl and Ruciński showed, by taking $G$ to be a suitable expander graph, that necessarily $r_Δ> 2^{cΔ}$ for some constant $c>0$. We show that the use of expanders is essential: if we impose the additional restriction that the bandwidth of $G$ be at most some function $β(n) = o(n)$, then $R(G,G) \le (2χ(G)+4)n\leq (2Δ+6)n$, i.e., $r_Δ= 2Δ+6$ suffices. On the other hand, we show that Burr's conjecture itself fails even for $P_n^k$, the $k$th power of a path $P_n$. Brandt showed that for any $c$, if $Δ$ is sufficiently large, there are connected $n$-vertex graphs $G$ with $Δ(G)\leqΔ$ but $R(G,K_3)>cn$. We show that, given $Δ$ and $H$, there are $β>0$ and $n_0$ such that, if $G$ is a connected graph on $n\ge n_0$ vertices with maximum degree at most $Δ$ and bandwidth at most $βn$, then we have $R(G,H)=(χ(H)-1)(n-1)+σ(H)$, where $σ(H)$ is the smallest size of any part in any $χ(H)$-partition of $H$. We also show that the same conclusion holds without any restriction on the maximum degree of $G$ if the bandwidth of $G$ is at most $ε(H) \log n/\log\log n$.

The graph theoretic moment problem
We study an analogue of the classical moment problem in the framework where moments are indexed by graphs instead of natural numbers. We study limit objects of graph sequences where edges are labeled by elements of a topological space. Among other things we obtain strengthening and generalizations of the main results of previous papers characterizing reflection positive graph parameters, graph homomorphism numbers, and limits of simple graph sequences. We study a new class of reflection positive partition functions which generalize the node-coloring models (homomorphisms into weighted graphs).
A Unified Framework for Testing Linear-Invariant Properties
Published • View Publication • BIB
The study of the interplay between the testability of properties of Boolean functions and the invariances acting on their domain which preserve the property was initiated by Kaufman and Sudan (STOC 2008). Invariance with respect to F_2-linear transformations is arguably the most common symmetry exhibited by natural properties of Boolean functions on the hypercube. Hence, an important goal in Property Testing is to describe necessary and sufficient conditions for the testability of linear-invariant properties. This direction was explicitly proposed for investigation in a recent survey of Sudan. We obtain the following results: 1. We show that every linear-invariant property that can be characterized by forbidding induced solutions to a (possibly infinite) set of linear equations can be tested with one-sided error. 2. We show that every linear-invariant property that can be tested with one-sided error can be characterized by forbidding induced solutions to a (possibly infinite) set of systems of linear equations. We conjecture that our result from item (1) can be extended to cover systems of linear equations. We further show that the validity of this conjecture would have the following implications: 1. It would imply that every linear-invariant property that is closed under restrictions to linear subspaces is testable with one-sided error. Such a result would unify several previous results on testing Boolean functions, such as the testability of low-degree polynomials and of Fourier dimensionality. 2. It would imply that a linear-invariant property P is testable with one-sided error if and only if P is closed under restrictions to linear subspaces, thus resolving Sudan's problem.

New series for some special values of $L$-functions
Published in Nanjing Univ. J. Math. Biquarterly 32(2015), no. 2, 189--218 • Search Publication
Dirichlet's $L$-functions are natural extensions of the Riemann zeta function. In this paper we first give a brief survey of Apéry-like series for some special values of the zeta function and certain $L$-functions. Then, we establish two theorems on transformations of certain kinds of congruences. Motivated by the results and based on our computation, we pose 48 new conjectural series (most of which involve harmonic numbers) for such special values and related constants. For example, we conjecture that \begin{align*}\sum_{k=1}^\infty\frac1{k^4\binom{2k}k}\bigg(\frac1k+\sum_{j=k}^{2k}\frac1j\bigg)=&\frac{11}9ζ(5), \\\sum_{k=1}^\infty\frac{(-1)^{k-1}}{k^3\binom{2k}k}\bigg(\frac1{5k^3}+\sum_{j=1}^{k}\frac1{j^3}\bigg)=&\frac{2}5ζ(3)^2, \end{align*} and $$\sum_{k=1}^\infty\frac{48^k}{k(2k-1)\binom{4k}{2k}\binom{2k}k}=\frac{15}2\sum_{k=1}^\infty\frac{(\frac k3)}{k^2},$$ where $(\frac k3)$ denotes the Legendre symbol.

Weakly directed self-avoiding walks
Published • View Publication • BIB
We define a new family of self-avoiding walks (SAW) on the square lattice, called weakly directed walks. These walks have a simple characterization in terms of the irreducible bridges that compose them. We determine their generating function. This series has a complex singularity structure and in particular, is not D-finite. The growth constant is approximately 2.54 and is thus larger than that of all natural families of SAW enumerated so far (but smaller than that of general SAW, which is about 2.64). We also prove that the end-to-end distance of weakly directed walks grows linearly. Finally, we study a diagonal variant of this model.

Moment-angle complexes and polyhedral products for convex polytopes
Published in Proc. Steklov Inst. Math. 275(1), 2011, 15-46 • View Publication • BIB
Let P be a convex polytope not simple in general. In the focus of this paper lies a simplicial complex K_P which carries complete information about the combinatorial type of P. In the case when P is simple, K_P is the same as dP*, where P* is a polar dual polytope. Using the canonical embedding of a polytope P into nonnegative orthant, we introduce a moment-angle space Z_P for a polytope P. It is known, that in the case when P is simple the space Z_P is homeomorphic to the polyhedral product (D^2,S^1)^{K_P}. When P is not simple, we prove that the space Z_P is homotopically equivalent to the space (D^2,S^1)^{K_P}. This allows to introduce bigraded Betti numbers for any convex polytope. A Stanley-Reisner ring of a polytope P can be defined as a Stanley-Reisner ring of a simplicial complex K_P. All these considerations lead to a natural question: which simplicial complexes arise as K_P for some polytope P? We have proceeded in this direction by introducing a notion of a polytopic simplicial complex. It has the following property: link of each simplex in a polytopic complex is either contractible, or retractible to a subcomplex, homeomorphic to a sphere. The complex K_P is a polytopic simplicial complex for any polytope P. Links of so called face simplices in a polytopic complex are polytopic complexes as well. This fact is sufficient enough to connect face polynomial of a simplicial complex K_P to the face polynomial of a polytope P, giving a series of inequalities on certain combinatorial characteristics of P. Two of these inequalities are equalities for each P and represent Euler-Poincare formula and one of Bayer-Billera relations for flag f-numbers. In the case when P is simple all inequalities turn out to be classical Dehn-Sommerville relations.

Combinatorial bases for covariant representations of the Lie superalgebra gl(m|n)
Published in Bulletin of the Institute of Mathematics, Academia Sinica 6 (2011), 415-462 • Search Publication
Covariant tensor representations of gl(m|n) occur as irreducible components of tensor powers of the natural (m+n)-dimensional representation. We construct a basis of each covariant representation and give explicit formulas for the action of the generators of gl(m|n) in this basis. The basis has the property that the natural Lie subalgebras gl(m) and gl(n) act by the classical Gelfand-Tsetlin formulas. The main role in the construction is played by the fact that the subspace of gl(m)-highest vectors in any finite-dimensional irreducible representation of gl(m|n) carries a structure of an irreducible module over the Yangian Y(gl(n)). One consequence is a new proof of the character formula for the covariant representations first found by Berele and Regev and by Sergeev.

Rectangular Polyomino Set Weak (1,2)-achievement Games
Published in Theoretical Computer Science 409 (2008), no.3, 333--340 • View Publication • BIB
In a polyomino set (1,2)-achievement game the maker and the breaker alternately mark one and two previously unmarked cells respectively. The maker's goal is to mark a set of cells congruent to one of a given set of polyominoes. The breaker tries to prevent the maker from achieving his goal. The teams of polyominoes for which the maker has a winning strategy is determined up to size 4. In set achievement games, it is natural to study infinitely large polyominoes. This enables the construction of super winners that characterize all winning teams up to a certain size.

The Dynamics of Semilattice Networks
Time-discrete dynamical systems on a finite state space have been used with great success to model natural and engineered systems such as biological networks, social networks, and engineered control systems. They have the advantage of being intuitive and models can be easily simulated on a computer in most cases; however, few analytical tools beyond simulation are available. The motivation for this paper is to develop such tools for the analysis of models in biology. In this paper we have identified a broad class of discrete dynamical systems with a finite phase space for which one can derive strong results about their long-term dynamics in terms of properties of their dependency graphs. We classify completely the limit cycles of semilattice networks with strongly connected dependency graph and provide polynomial upper and lower bounds in the general case.

Multitriangulations, pseudotriangulations and primitive sorting networks
Published in Discrete Comput. Geom., 48(1):142-191, 2012 • View Publication • BIB
We study the set of all pseudoline arrangements with contact points which cover a given support. We define a natural notion of flip between these arrangements and study the graph of these flips. In particular, we provide an enumeration algorithm for arrangements with a given support, based on the properties of certain greedy pseudoline arrangements and on their connection with sorting networks. Both the running time per arrangement and the working space of our algorithm are polynomial. As the motivation for this work, we provide in this paper a new interpretation of both pseudotriangulations and multitriangulations in terms of pseudoline arrangements on specific supports. This interpretation explains their common properties and leads to a natural definition of multipseudotriangulations, which generalizes both. We study elementary properties of multipseudotriangulations and compare them to iterations of pseudotriangulations.

Generalized Compositions and Weighted Fibonacci Numbers
In this paper we consider particular generalized compositions of a natural number with a given number of parts. Its number is a weighted polynomial coefficient. The number of all generalized compositions of a natural number is a weighted $r$-generalized Fibonacci number. A relationship between these two numbers will be derived. We shall thus obtain a generalization of the well-known formula connecting Fibonacci numbers with the binomial coefficients.

On three point configurations determined by subsets of the Euclidean plane, the associated bilinear operator and applications to discrete geometry
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove that if the Hausdorff dimension of a compact set $E \subset {\Bbb R}^2$ is greater than 7/4, then the set of {\ag three-point configurations determined by $E$ has positive three-dimensional measure}. We establish this by showing that {\ag a} natural measure on the set of {\ag such configurations} has {\ag Radon-Nikodym derivative} in $L^{\infty}$ if $\dH(E)> 7/4$, and the index 7/4 in this last result cannot, in general, be improved. This problem naturally leads to the study of a bilinear convolution operator, $$ B(f,g)(x)=\int \int f(x-u) g(x-v)\, dK(u,v),$$ where $K$ is surface measure on the set $ \{(u, v) \in\R^2 \times \R^2: |u|=|v|=|u-v|=1\}$, and we prove a scale of estimates that includes $B:L^2_{-1/2}({\Bbb R}^2) \times L^2({\Bbb R}^2) \to L^1({\Bbb R}^2)$ on positive functions. As an application of our main result, it follows that {\ag for finite sets of cardinality $n$ and belonging to a natural class of discrete sets in the plane}, the maximum number of times a given three-point configuration arises is $O(n^{9/7+ε})$ (up to congruence), improving upon the known bound of $O(n^{4/3})$ in this context.

Primitive ideals in quantum Schubert cells: dimension of the strata
Published • View Publication • BIB
The aim of this paper is to study the representation theory of quantum Schubert cells. Let $\g$ be a simple complex Lie algebra. To each element $w$ of the Weyl group $W$ of $\g$, De Concini, Kac and Procesi have attached a subalgebra $U_q[w]$ of the quantised enveloping algebra $U_q(\g)$. Recently, Yakimov showed that these algebras can be interpreted as the quantum Schubert cells on quantum flag manifolds. In this paper, we study the primitive ideals of $U_q[w]$. More precisely, it follows from the Stratification Theorem of Goodearl and Letzter that the primitive spectrum of $U_q[w]$ admits a stratification indexed by those primes that are invariant under a natural torus action. Moreover each stratum is homeomorphic to the spectrum of maximal ideals of a torus. The main result of this paper gives an explicit formula for the dimension of the stratum associated to a given torus-invariant prime.

Combinatorial Properties of Finite Models
We study countable embedding-universal and homomorphism-universal structures and unify results related to both of these notions. We show that many universal and ultrahomogeneous structures allow a concise description (called here a finite presentation). Extending classical work of Rado (for the random graph), we find a finite presentation for each of the following classes: homogeneous undirected graphs, homogeneous tournaments and homogeneous partially ordered sets. We also give a finite presentation of the rational Urysohn metric space and some homogeneous directed graphs. We survey well known structures that are finitely presented. We focus on structures endowed with natural partial orders and prove their universality. These partial orders include partial orders on sets of words, partial orders formed by geometric objects, grammars, polynomials and homomorphism orders for various combinatorial objects. We give a new combinatorial proof of the existence of embedding-universal objects for homomorphism-defined classes of structures. This relates countable embedding-universal structures to homomorphism dualities (finite homomorphism-universal structures) and Urysohn metric spaces. Our explicit construction also allows us to show several properties of these structures.

Multivalued generalizations of the Frankl--Pach Theorem
P. Frankl and J. Pach proved the following uniform version of Sauer's Lemma. Let $n,d,s$ be natural numbers such that $d\leq n$, $s+1\leq n/2$. Let $\cF \subseteq {[n] \choose d}$ be an arbitrary $d$-uniform set system such that $\cF$ does not shatter an $s+1$-element set, then $$ |\cF|\leq {n \choose s}.$$ We prove here two generalizations of the above theorem to $n$-tuple systems. To obtain these results, we use Gröbner basis methods, and describe the standard monomials of Hamming spheres.
