Quantum double Schubert polynomials represent Schubert classes
Published • View PublicationBIB
The quantum double Schubert polynomials studied by Kirillov and Maeno, and by Ciocan-Fontanine and Fulton, are shown to represent Schubert classes in Kim's presentation of the equivariant quantum cohomology of the flag variety. We define parabolic analogues of quantum double Schubert polynomials, and show that they represent Schubert classes in the equivariant quantum cohomology of partial flag varieties. For complete flags Anderson and Chen have announced a proof with different methods.

Projected Richardson varieties and affine Schubert varieties
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a complex quasi-simple algebraic group and $G/P$ be a partial flag variety. The projections of Richardson varieties from the full flag variety form a stratification of $G/P$. We show that the closure partial order of projected Richardson varieties agrees with that of a subset of Schubert varieties in the affine flag variety of $G$. Furthermore, we compare the torus-equivariant cohomology and $K$-theory classes of these two stratifications by pushing or pulling these classes to the affine Grassmannian. Our work generalizes results of Knutson, Lam, and Speyer for the Grassmannian of type $A$.

Cyclic sieving of finite Grassmannians and flag varieties
Published in Discrete Mathematics, Volume 312, Issue 5, 6 March 2012, Pages 898-910 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we prove instances of the cyclic sieving phenomenon for finite Grassmannians and partial flag varieties, which carry the action of various tori in the finite general linear group GL_n(F_q). The polynomials involved are sums of certain weights of the minimal length parabolic coset representatives of the symmetric group S_n, where the weight of a coset representative can be written as a product over its inversions.

Functorial relationships between quantum cohomology of complete and partial flag varieties
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give a natural filtration F on quantum cohomology QH(G/B) of G/B, which respects the quantum product structure. Its associated graded algebra is isomorphic to the tensor product of QH(G/P) and a corresponding graded algebra of QH(P/B) after localization. When the quantum parameter goes to zero, this specializes to the filtration on the classical cohomology H(G/B) from the Leray spectral sequence associated to the fibration P/B --> G/B --> G/P.

Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence in the geometry of partial flag varieties
In this paper we generalize to the case of partial flags a result proved both by Spaltenstein and by Steinberg that relates the relative position of two complete flags and the irreducible components of the flag variety in which they lie, using the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence.

Divided difference operators for partial flag varieties
Divided difference operators are degree-reducing operators on the cohomology of flag varieties that are used to compute algebraic invariants of the ring (for instance, structure constants). We identify divided difference operators on the equivariant cohomology of G/P for arbitrary partial flag varieties of arbitrary Lie type, and show how to use them in the ordinary cohomology of G/P. We provide three applications. The first shows that all Schubert classes of partial flag varieties can be generated from a sequence of divided difference operators on the highest-degree Schubert class. The second is a generalization of Billey's formula for the localizations of equivariant Schubert classes of flag varieties to arbitrary partial flag varieties. The third gives a choice of Schubert polynomials for partial flag varieties as well as an explicit formula for each. We focus on the example of maximal Grassmannians, including Grassmannians of k-planes in a complex n-dimensional vector space.

A classification of H-primes of quantum partial flag varieties
Published • View PublicationBIB
We classify the invariant prime ideals of a quantum partial flag variety under the action of the related maximal torus. As a result we construct a bijection between them and the torus orbits of symplectic leaves of the standard Poisson structure on the corresponding flag variety. It was previously shown by K. Goodearl and the author that the latter are precisely the Lusztig strata of the partial flag variety.

A Giambelli formula for classical $G/P$ spaces
Published in J. Algebraic Geometry 23 (2014), 245-278 • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a classical complex Lie group, $P$ any parabolic subgroup of $G$, and $G/P$ the corresponding partial flag variety. We prove an explicit combinatorial Giambelli formula which expresses an arbitrary Schubert class in the cohomology ring of $G/P$ as a polynomial in certain special Schubert class generators. Our formula extends to one that applies to the torus-equivariant cohomology ring of $G/P$ and to the setting of symplectic and orthogonal degeneracy loci.

Discrete Morse theory for totally non-negative flag varieties
Published in Adv. Math., 223, April 2010, 1855-1884 • View PublicationBIB
In a seminal 1994 paper, Lusztig extended the theory of total positivity by introducing the totally non-negative part (G/P)_{\geq 0} of an arbitrary (generalized, partial) flag variety G/P. He referred to this space as a "remarkable polyhedral subspace", and conjectured a decomposition into cells, which was subsequently proven by the first author. Subsequently the second author made the concrete conjecture that this cell decomposed space is the next best thing to a polyhedron, by conjecturing it to be a regular CW complex that is homeomorphic to a closed ball. In this article we use discrete Morse theory to prove this conjecture up to homotopy-equivalence. Explicitly, we prove that the boundaries of the cells are homotopic to spheres, and the closures of cells are contractible. The latter part generalizes a result of Lusztig's that (G/P)_{\geq 0} -- the closure of the top-dimensional cell -- is contractible. Concerning our result on the boundaries of cells, even the special case that the boundary of the top-dimensional cell (G/P)_{> 0} is homotopic to a sphere, is new for all G/P other than projective space.

Cluster algebras and Grassmannians of type G2

We prove a conjecture of Geiss, Leclerc and Schröer, producing cluster algebra structures on multi-homogeneous coordinate ring of partial flag varieties, for the case $G_2$. As a consequence we sharpen the known fact that coordinate ring of the double Bruhat cell $G^{e,w_0}$ is an upper cluster algebra, by proving that it is a cluster algebra.

Totally positive Toeplitz matrices and quantum cohomology of partial flag varieties
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that the set of totally positive unipotent lower-triangular Toeplitz matrices in $GL_n$ form a real semi-algebraic cell of dimension $n-1$. Furthermore we prove a natural cell decomposition for its closure. The proof uses properties of the quantum cohomology rings of the partial flag varieties of $GL_n(\C)$ relying in particular on the positivity of the structure constants, which are enumerative Gromov--Witten invariants. We also give a characterization of total positivity for Toeplitz matrices in terms of the (quantum) Schubert classes. This work builds on some results of Dale Peterson's which we explain with proofs in the type $A$ case.
