Stammering tableaux
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, Vol. 19 no. 3, Combinatorics (September 15, 2017) dmtcs:1351 • View PublicationBIB
The PASEP (Partially Asymmetric Simple Exclusion Process) is a probabilistic model of moving particles, which is of great interest in combinatorics, since it appeared that its partition function counts some tableaux. These tableaux have several variants such as permutations tableaux, alternative tableaux, tree- like tableaux, Dyck tableaux, etc. We introduce in this context certain excursions in Young's lattice, that we call stammering tableaux (by analogy with oscillating tableaux, vacillating tableaux, hesitating tableaux). Some natural bijections make a link with rook placements in a double staircase, chains of Dyck paths obtained by successive addition of ribbons, Laguerre histories, Dyck tableaux, etc.

Symmetry classes of alternating sign matrices in the nineteen-vertex model
Published • View PublicationBIB
The nineteen-vertex model on a periodic lattice with an anti-diagonal twist is investigated. Its inhomogeneous transfer matrix is shown to have a simple eigenvalue, with the corresponding eigenstate displaying intriguing combinatorial features. Similar results were previously found for the same model with a diagonal twist. The eigenstate for the anti-diagonal twist is explicitly constructed using the quantum separation of variables technique. A number of sum rules and special components are computed and expressed in terms of Kuperberg's determinants for partition functions of the inhomogeneous six-vertex model. The computations of some components of the special eigenstate for the diagonal twist are also presented. In the homogeneous limit, the special eigenstates become eigenvectors of the Hamiltonians of the integrable spin-one XXZ chain with twisted boundary conditions. Their sum rules and special components for both twists are expressed in terms of generating functions arising in the weighted enumeration of various symmetry classes of alternating sign matrices (ASMs). These include half-turn symmetric ASMs, quarter-turn symmetric ASMs, vertically symmetric ASMs, vertically and horizontally perverse ASMs and double U-turn ASMs. As side results, new determinant and pfaffian formulas for the weighted enumeration of various symmetry classes of alternating sign matrices are obtained.
Partitioning a triangle-free planar graph into a forest and a forest of bounded degree
Published • View PublicationBIB
An $({\cal F},{\cal F}_d)$-partition of a graph is a vertex-partition into two sets $F$ and $F_d$ such that the graph induced by $F$ is a forest and the one induced by $F_d$ is a forest with maximum degree at most $d$. We prove that every triangle-free planar graph admits an $({\cal F},{\cal F}_5)$-partition. Moreover we show that if for some integer $d$ there exists a triangle-free planar graph that does not admit an $({\cal F},{\cal F}_d)$-partition, then it is an NP-complete problem to decide whether a triangle-free planar graph admits such a partition.

Partition zeta functions

We exploit transformations relating generalized $q$-series, infinite products, sums over integer partitions, and continued fractions, to find partition-theoretic formulas to compute the values of constants such as $π$, and to connect sums over partitions to the Riemann zeta function, multiple zeta values, and other number-theoretic objects.

The part-frequency matrices of a partition
Published • View PublicationBIB
A new combinatorial object is introduced, the part-frequency matrix sequence of a partition, which is elementary to describe and is naturally motivated by Glaisher's bijection. We prove results that suggest surprising usefulness for such a simple tool, including the existence of a related statistic that realizes every possible Ramanujan-type congruence for the partition function. To further exhibit its research utility, we give an easy generalization of a theorem of Andrews, Dixit and Yee on the mock theta functions. Throughout, we state a number of observations and questions that can motivate an array of investigations.

Algorithms for Tverberg's theorem via centerpoint theorems
We obtain algorithms for computing Tverberg partitions based on centerpoint approximations. This applies to a wide range of convexity spaces, from the classic Euclidean setting to geodetic convexity in graphs. In the Euclidean setting, we present probabilistic algorithms which are weakly polynomial in the number of points and the dimension. For geodetic convexity in graphs, we obtain deterministic algorithms for cactus graphs and show that the general problem of finding the Radon number is NP-hard.

Godsil-McKay switching and twisted Grassmann graphs
Published in Designs, Codes and Cryptography, 84 (2017), 173-179 • View PublicationBIB
We show that the twisted Grassmann graphs introduced by Van Dam and Koolen are obtained by Godsil-McKay switching applied to the Grassmann graphs. The partition for the switching is constructed by a polarity of a hyperplane.

Counting curves on surfaces
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we consider an elementary, and largely unexplored, combinatorial problem in low-dimensional topology. Consider a real 2-dimensional compact surface $S$, and fix a number of points $F$ on its boundary. We ask: how many configurations of disjoint arcs are there on $S$ whose boundary is $F$? We find that this enumerative problem, counting curves on surfaces, has a rich structure. For instance, we show that the curve counts obey an effective recursion, in the general framework of topological recursion. Moreover, they exhibit quasi-polynomial behaviour. This "elementary curve-counting" is in fact related to a more advanced notion of "curve-counting" from algebraic geometry or symplectic geometry. The asymptotics of this enumerative problem are closely related to the asymptotics of volumes of moduli spaces of curves, and the quasi-polynomials governing the enumerative problem encode intersection numbers on moduli spaces. Furthermore, among several other results, we show that generating functions and differential forms for these curve counts exhibit structure that is reminiscent of the mathematical physics of free energies, partition functions, topological recursion, and quantum curves.

Plane partitions with a "pit": generating functions and representation theory
Published in Sel. Math. New Ser. 24(1) (2018) 21-62 • View PublicationBIB
We study plane partitions satisfying condition $a_{n+1,m+1}=0$ (this condition is called "pit") and asymptotic conditions along three coordinate axes. We find the formulas for generating function of such plane partitions. Such plane partitions label the basis vectors in certain representations of quantum toroidal $\mathfrak{gl}_1$ algebra, therefore our formulas can be interpreted as the characters of these representations. The resulting formulas resemble formulas for characters of tensor representations of Lie superalgebra $\mathfrak{gl}_{m|n}$. We discuss representation theoretic interpretation of our formulas using $q$-deformed $W$-algebra $\mathfrak{gl}_{m|n}$.

Hook formulas for skew shapes I. $q$-analogues and bijections
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory Series A 154 (2018), pp 350--405 • View PublicationBIB
The celebrated hook-length formula gives a product formula for the number of standard Young tableaux of a straight shape. In 2014, Naruse announced a more general formula for the number of standard Young tableaux of skew shapes as a positive sum over excited diagrams of products of hook-lengths. We give an algebraic and a combinatorial proof of Naruse's formula, by using factorial Schur functions and a generalization of the Hillman--Grassl correspondence, respectively. The main new results are two different $q$-analogues of Naruse's formula: for the skew Schur functions, and for counting reverse plane partitions of skew shapes. We establish explicit bijections between these objects and families of integer arrays with certain nonzero entries, which also proves the second formula.

The Raney Numbers and $(s,s+1)$-Core Partitions
The Raney numbers $R_{p,r}(k)$ are a two-parameter generalization of the Catalan numbers. In this paper, we obtain a recurrence relation for the Raney numbers which is a generalization of the recurrence relation for the Catalan numbers. Using this recurrence relation, we confirm a conjecture posed by Amdeberhan concerning the enumeration of $(s,s+1)$-core partitions $λ$ with parts that are multiples of $p$. We then give a new combinatorial interpretation for the Raney numbers $R_{p+1,r+1}(k)$ with $0\leq r<p$ in terms of $(kp+r,kp+r+1)$-core partitions $λ$ with parts that are multiples of $p$.

Partition functions of integrable lattice models and combinatorics of symmetric polynomials
We review and present new studies on the relation between the partition functions of integrable lattice models and symmetric polynomials, and its combinatorial representation theory based on the correspondence, including our work. In particular, we examine the correspondence between the wavefunctions of the XXZ type, Felderhof type and the boson type integrable models and symmetric polynomials such as the Schur, Grothendieck and symplectic Schur functions. We also give a brief report of our work on generalizing the correspondence between the Felderhof models and factorial Schur and symplectic Schur functions.

The number of Hamiltonian decompositions of regular graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A Hamilton cycle in a graph $Γ$ is a cycle passing through every vertex of $Γ$. A Hamiltonian decomposition of $Γ$ is a partition of its edge set into disjoint Hamilton cycles. One of the oldest results in graph theory is Walecki's theorem from the 19th century, showing that a complete graph $K_n$ on an odd number of vertices $n$ has a Hamiltonian decomposition. This result was recently greatly extended by Kühn and Osthus. They proved that every $r$-regular $n$-vertex graph $Γ$ with even degree $r=cn$ for some fixed $c>1/2$ has a Hamiltonian decomposition, provided $n=n(c)$ is sufficiently large. In this paper we address the natural question of estimating $H(Γ)$, the number of such decompositions of $Γ$. Our main result is that $H(Γ)=r^{(1+o(1))nr/2}$. In particular, the number of Hamiltonian decompositions of $K_n$ is $n^{(1-o(1))n^2/2}$.

On the Widom-Rowlinson Occupancy Fraction in Regular Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider the Widom-Rowlinson model of two types of interacting particles on d-regular graphs. We prove a tight upper bound on the occupancy fraction, the expected fraction of vertices occupied by a particle under a random configuration from the model. The upper bound is achieved uniquely by unions of complete graphs on d+1 vertices, $K_{d+1}$'s. As a corollary we find that $K_{d+1}$ also maximises the normalised partition function of the Widom-Rowlinson model over the class of d-regular graphs. A special case of this shows that the normalised number of homomorphisms from any d-regular graph $G$ to the graph $H_{WR}$, a path on three vertices with a loop on each vertex, is maximised by $K_{d+1}$. This proves a conjecture of Galvin.

Inside the clustering window for random linear equations
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study a random system of cn linear equations over n variables in GF(2), where each equation contains exactly r variables; this is equivalent to r-XORSAT. Previous work has established a clustering threshold, c^*_r for this model: if c=c_r^*-εfor any constant ε>0 then with high probability all solutions form a well-connected cluster; whereas if c=c^*_r+ε, then with high probability the solutions partition into well-connected, well-separated clusters (with probability tending to 1 as n goes to infinity). This is part of a general clustering phenomenon which is hypothesized to arise in most of the commonly studied models of random constraint satisfaction problems, via sophisticated but mostly non-rigorous techniques from statistical physics. We extend that study to the range c=c^*_r+o(1), and prove that the connectivity parameters of the r-XORSAT clusters undergo a smooth transition around the clustering threshold.
A combinatorial Hopf algebra for the boson normal ordering problem
Published in Ann. Inst. Henri Poincaré Comb. Phys. Interact. 5 (2018), 61-102 • View PublicationBIB
In the aim to understand the generalization of Stirling numbers occurring in the bosonic normal ordering problem, several combinatorial models have been proposed. In particular, Blasiak \emph{et al.} defined combinatorial objects allowing to interpret the number of $S_{\bf{r,s}}(k)$ appearing in the identity $(a^†)^{r_n}a^{s_n}\cdots(a^†)^{r_1}a^{s_1}=(a^†)^α\displaystyle\sum S_{\bf{r,s}}(k)(a^†)^k a^k$, where $α$ is assumed to be non-negative. These objects are used to define a combinatorial Hopf algebra which specializes to the enveloping algebra of the Heisenberg Lie algebra. Here, we propose a new variant of this construction which admits a realization with variables. This means that we construct our algebra from a free algebra $\mathbb{C}\langle A \rangle$ using quotient and shifted product. The combinatorial objects (B-diagrams) are slightly different from those proposed by Blasiak \emph{et al.}, but give also a combinatorial interpretation of the generalized Stirling numbers together with a combinatorial Hopf algebra related to Heisenberg Lie algebra. The main difference comes from the fact that the B-diagrams have the same number of inputs and outputs. After studying the combinatorics and the enumeration of B-diagrams, we propose two constructions of algebras called Fusion algebra $\mathcal{F}$, defined using formal variable and another algebra $\mathcal{B}$ constructed directly from the B-diagrams. We show the connection between these two algebras and that $\mathcal{B}$ can be endowed with a Hopf structure. We recognize two already known combinatorial Hopf subalgebras of $\mathcal{B}$ : $\mathrm{WSym}$ the algebra of word symmetric functions indexed by set partitions and $\mathrm{BWSym}$ the algebra of biword symmetric functions indexed by set partitions into lists.

Diagonally and antidiagonally symmetric alternating sign matrices of odd order
Published in Adv. Math. 315 (2017) 324-365 • View PublicationBIB
We study the enumeration of diagonally and antidiagonally symmetric alternating sign matrices (DASASMs) of fixed odd order by introducing a case of the six-vertex model whose configurations are in bijection with such matrices. The model involves a grid graph on a triangle, with bulk and boundary weights which satisfy the Yang-Baxter and reflection equations. We obtain a general expression for the partition function of this model as a sum of two determinantal terms, and show that at a certain point each of these terms reduces to a Schur function. We are then able to prove a conjecture of Robbins from the mid 1980's that the total number of $(2n+1)\times(2n+1)$ DASASMs is $\prod_{i=0}^n\frac{(3i)!}{(n+i)!}$, and a conjecture of Stroganov from 2008 that the ratio between the numbers of $(2n+1)\times(2n+1)$ DASASMs with central entry $-1$ and $1$ is $n/(n+1)$. Among the several product formulae for the enumeration of symmetric alternating sign matrices which were conjectured in the 1980's, that for odd-order DASASMs is the last to have been proved.

Congruences on the Number of Restricted $m$-ary Partitions

Andrews, Brietzke, Rødseth and Sellers proved an infinite family of congruences on the number of the restricted $m$-ary partitions when $m$ is a prime. In this note, we show that these congruences hold for arbitrary positive integer $m$ and thus confirm the conjecture of Andrews, et al.
