Unlabeled Signed Graph Coloring
Published • View PublicationBIB
We extend the work of Hanlon on the chromatic polynomial of an unlabeled graph to define the unlabeled chromatic polynomial of an unlabeled signed graph. Explicit formulas are presented for labeled and unlabeled signed chromatic polynomials as summations over distinguished order-ideals of the signed partition lattice. We also define the quotient of a signed graph by a signed permutation, and show that its signed graphic arrangement is closely related to an induced arrangement on a distinguished subspace. Lastly, a formula for the number of unlabeled acyclic orientations of a signed graph is presented which recalls classical reciprocity theorems of Stanley and Zaslavsky.
On Partitioning the Edges of 1-Plane Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A 1-plane graph is a graph embedded in the plane such that each edge is crossed at most once. A 1-plane graph is optimal if it has maximum edge density. A red-blue edge coloring of an optimal 1-plane graph $G$ partitions the edge set of $G$ into blue edges and red edges such that no two blue edges cross each other and no two red edges cross each other. We prove the following: $(i)$ Every optimal 1-plane graph has a red-blue edge coloring such that the blue subgraph is maximal planar while the red subgraph has vertex degree at most four; this bound on the vertex degree is worst-case optimal. $(ii)$ A red-blue edge coloring may not always induce a red forest of bounded vertex degree. Applications of these results to graph augmentation and graph drawing are also discussed.

Computerizing the Andrews-Fraenkel-Sellers Proofs on the Number of m-ary partitions mod m (and doing MUCH more!)
In this short article, two recent beautiful proofs of George Andrews, Aviezri Fraenkel, and James Sellers, about the mod m characterization of the number of m-ary partitions are simplified and streamlined, and then generalized to handle many more cases, and prove much deeper theorems, with the help of computers, of course.
On the density of the odd values of the partition function
Published in Annals of Combinatorics 22 (2018), no. 3, 583--600 • View PublicationBIB
The purpose of this note is to introduce a new approach to the study of one of the most basic and seemingly intractable problems in partition theory, namely the conjecture that the partition function $p(n)$ is equidistributed modulo 2. Our main result will relate the densities, say $δ_t$, of the odd values of the $t$-multipartition functions $p_t(n)$, for several integers $t$. In particular, we will show that if $δ_t>0$ for some $t\in \{5,7,11,13,17,19,23,25\}$, then (assuming it exists) $δ_1>0$; that is, $p(n)$ itself is odd with positive density. Notice that, currently, the best unconditional result does not even imply that $p(n)$ is odd for $\sqrt{x}$ values of $n\le x$. In general, we conjecture that $δ_t=1/2$ for all $t$ odd, i.e., that similarly to the case of $p(n)$, all multipartition functions are in fact equidistributed modulo 2. Our arguments will employ a number of algebraic and analytic methods, ranging from an investigation modulo 2 of some classical Ramanujan identities and several other eta product results, to a unified approach that studies the parity of the Fourier coefficients of a broad class of modular form identities recently introduced by Radu.

Solutions to the T-systems with Principal Coefficients
Published • View PublicationBIB
The $A_\infty$ T-system, also called the octahedron recurrence, is a dynamical recurrence relation. It can be realized as mutation in a coefficient-free cluster algebra (Kedem 2008, Di Francesco and Kedem 2009). We define T-systems with principal coefficients from cluster algebra aspect, and give combinatorial solutions with respect to any valid initial condition in terms of partition functions of perfect matchings, non-intersecting paths and networks. This also provides a solution to other systems with various choices of coefficients on T-systems including Speyer's octahedron recurrence (Speyer 2007), generalized lambda-determinants (Di Francesco 2013) and (higher) pentagram maps (Schwartz 1992, Ovsienko et al. 2010, Glick 2011, Gekhtman et al. 2014).
Sequence-structure relations of biopolymers
Published • View PublicationBIB
Motivation: DNA data is transcribed into single-stranded RNA, which folds into specific molecular structures. In this paper we pose the question to what extent sequence- and structure-information correlate. We view this correlation as structural semantics of sequence data that allows for a different interpretation than conventional sequence alignment. Structural semantics could enable us to identify more general embedded "patterns" in DNA and RNA sequences. Results: We compute the partition function of sequences with respect to a fixed structure and connect this computation to the mutual information of a sequence-structure pair for RNA secondary structures. We present a Boltzmann sampler and obtain the a priori probability of specific sequence patterns. We present a detailed analysis for the three PDB-structures, 2JXV (hairpin), 2N3R (3-branch multi-loop) and 1EHZ (tRNA). We localize specific sequence patterns, contrast the energy spectrum of the Boltzmann sampled sequences versus those sequences that refold into the same structure and derive a criterion to identify native structures. We illustrate that there are multiple sequences in the partition function of a fixed structure, each having nearly the same mutual information, that are nevertheless poorly aligned. This indicates the possibility of the existence of relevant patterns embedded in the sequences that are not discoverable using alignments.

The Log-Behavior of $\sqrt[n]{p(n)}$ and $\sqrt[n]{p(n)/n}$
Let $p(n)$ denote the partition function. Desalvo and Pak proved the log-concavity of $p(n)$ for $n>25$ and the inequality $\frac{p(n-1)}{p(n)}\left(1+\frac{1}{n}\right)>\frac{p(n)}{p(n+1)}$ for $n>1$. Let $r(n)=\sqrt[n]{p(n)/n}$ and $Δ$ be the difference operator respect to $n$. Desalvo and Pak pointed out that their approach to proving the log-concavity of $p(n)$ may be employed to prove a conjecture of Sun on the log-convexity of $\{r(n)\}_{n\geq 61}$, as long as one finds an appropriate estimate of $Δ^2 \log r(n-1)$. In this paper, we obtain a lower bound for $Δ^2\log r(n-1)$, leading to a proof of this conjecture. From the log-convexity of $\{r(n)\}_{n\geq61}$ and $\{\sqrt[n]{n}\}_{n\geq4}$, we are led to a proof of another conjecture of Sun on the log-convexity of $\{\sqrt[n]{p(n)}\}_{n\geq27}$. Furthermore, we show that $\lim\limits_{n \rightarrow +\infty}n^{\frac{5}{2}}Δ^2\log\sqrt[n]{p(n)}=3π/\sqrt{24}$. Finally, by finding an upper bound of $Δ^2 \log\sqrt[n-1]{p(n-1)}$, we prove an inequality on the ratio $\frac{\sqrt[n-1]{p(n-1)}}{\sqrt[n]{p(n)}}$ analogous to the above inequality on the ratio $\frac{p(n-1)}{p(n)}$.

Difference operators for partitions under the Littlewood decomposition
Published • View PublicationBIB
The concept of $t$-difference operator for functions of partitions is introduced to prove a generalization of Stanley's theorem on polynomiality of Plancherel averages of symmetric functions related to contents and hook lengths. Our extension uses a generalization of the notion of Plancherel measure, based on walks in the Young lattice with steps given by the addition of $t$-hooks. It is well-known that the hook lengths of multiples of $t$ can be characterized by the Littlewood decomposition. Our study gives some further information on the contents and hook lengths of other congruence classes modulo $t$.

The Saxl Conjecture for Fourth Powers via the Semigroup Property
Published in J. Algebra. Comb. (2017) 45:33-80 • View PublicationBIB
The tensor square conjecture states that for $n \geq 10$, there is an irreducible representation $V$ of the symmetric group $S_n$ such that $V \otimes V$ contains every irreducible representation of $S_n$. Our main result is that for large enough $n$, there exists an irreducible representation $V$ such that $V^{\otimes 4}$ contains every irreducible representation. We also show that tensor squares of certain irreducible representations contain $(1-o(1))$-fraction of irreducible representations with respect to two natural probability distributions. Our main tool is the semigroup property, which allows us to break partitions down into smaller ones.

Graphs that are simultaneously efficient open domination and efficient closed domination graphs
A graph is an efficient open (resp.\ closed) domination graph if there exists a subset of vertices whose open (resp.\ closed) neighborhoods partition its vertex set. Graphs that are efficient open as well as efficient closed (shortly EOCD graphs) are investigated. The structure of EOCD graphs with respect to their efficient open and efficient closed dominating sets is explained. It is shown that the decision problem regarding whether a graph is an EOCD graph is an NP-complete problem. A recursive description that constructs all EOCD trees is given and EOCD graphs are characterized among the Sierpiński graphs.
Complete Kneser Transversals
Published in Advances in Applied Mathematics, Elsevier, 2016 • View PublicationBIB
Let $k,d,λ\geqslant1$ be integers with $d\geqslantλ$. Let $m(k,d,λ)$ be the maximum positive integer $n$ such that every set of $n$ points (not necessarily in general position) in $\mathbb{R}^{d}$ has the property that the convex hulls of all $k$-sets have a common transversal $(d-λ)$-plane. It turns out that $m(k, d,λ)$ is strongly connected with other interesting problems, for instance, the chromatic number of Kneser hypergraphs and a discrete version of Rado's centerpoint theorem. In the same spirit, we introduce a natural discrete version $m^*$ of $m$ by considering the existence of complete Kneser transversals. We study the relation between them and give a number of lower and upper bounds of $m^*$ as well as the exact value in some cases. The main ingredient for the proofs are Radon's partition theorem as well as oriented matroids tools. By studying the alternating oriented matroid we obtain the asymptotic behavior of the function $m^*$ for the family of cyclic polytopes.

Unit Interval Orders and the Dot Action on the Cohomology of Regular Semisimple Hessenberg Varieties
Published • View PublicationBIB
Motivated by a 1993 conjecture of Stanley and Stembridge, Shareshian and Wachs conjectured that the characteristic map takes the dot action of the symmetric group on the cohomology of a regular semisimple Hessenberg variety to $ωX_G(t)$, where $X_G(t)$ is the chromatic quasisymmetric function of the incomparability graph $G$ of the corresponding natural unit interval order, and $ω$ is the usual involution on symmetric functions. We prove the Shareshian--Wachs conjecture. Our proof uses the local invariant cycle theorem of Beilinson-Bernstein-Deligne to obtain a surjection from the cohomology of a regular Hessenberg variety of Jordan type $λ$ to a space of local invariant cycles; as $λ$ ranges over all partitions, these spaces collectively contain all the information about the dot action on a regular semisimple Hessenberg variety. Using a palindromicity argument, we show that in our case the surjections are actually isomorphisms, thus reducing the Shareshian-Wachs conjecture to computing the cohomology of a regular Hessenberg variety. But this cohomology has already been described combinatorially by Tymoczko; we give a bijective proof (using a generalization of a combinatorial reciprocity theorem of Chow) that Tymoczko's combinatorial description coincides with the combinatorics of the chromatic quasisymmetric function.

Pattern avoidance for set partitions à la Klazar
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, Vol. 18 no. 2, Permutation Patterns 2015, Permutation Patterns (September 7, 2016) dmtcs:1327 • View PublicationBIB
In 2000 Klazar introduced a new notion of pattern avoidance in the context of set partitions of $[n]=\{1,\ldots, n\}$. The purpose of the present paper is to undertake a study of the concept of Wilf-equivalence based on Klazar's notion. We determine all Wilf-equivalences for partitions with exactly two blocks, one of which is a singleton block, and we conjecture that, for $n\geq 4$, these are all the Wilf-equivalences except for those arising from complementation. If $τ$ is a partition of $[k]$ and $Π_n(τ)$ denotes the set of all partitions of $[n]$ that avoid $τ$, we establish inequalities between $|Π_n(τ_1)|$ and $|Π_n(τ_2)|$ for several choices of $τ_1$ and $τ_2$, and we prove that if $τ_2$ is the partition of $[k]$ with only one block, then $|Π_n(τ_1)| <|Π_n(τ_2)|$ for all $n>k$ and all partitions $τ_1$ of $[k]$ with exactly two blocks. We conjecture that this result holds for all partitions $τ_1$ of $[k]$. Finally, we enumerate $Π_n(τ)$ for all partitions $τ$ of $[4]$.

The diameter of Inhomogeneous random graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we study the diameter of Inhomogeneous random graphs $G(n,κ,p)$ that are induced by irreducible kernels $κ$. The kernels we consider act on separable metric spaces and are almost everywhere continuous. We generalize results known for the Erdős-Rényi model $G(n,p)$ for several ranges of $p$. We find upper and lower bounds for the diameter of $G(n,κ,p)$ in terms of the expansion factor and two explicit constants that depend on the behavior of the kernel over partitions of the metric space.

Cyclic sieving and rational Catalan theory
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $a < b$ be coprime positive integers. Armstrong, Rhoades, and Williams defined a set $\mathsf{NC}(a,b)$ of `rational noncrossing partitions', which form a subset of the ordinary noncrossing partitions of $\{1, 2, \dots, b-1\}$. Confirming a conjecture of Armstrong et. al., we prove that $\mathsf{NC}(a,b)$ is closed under rotation and prove an instance of the cyclic sieving phenomenon for this rotational action. We also define a rational generalization of the $\mathfrak{S}_a$-noncrossing parking functions of Armstrong, Reiner, and Rhoades.
Colourings, Homomorphisms, and Partitions of Transitive Digraphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We investigate the complexity of generalizations of colourings (acyclic colourings, $(k,\ell)$-colourings, homomorphisms, and matrix partitions), for the class of transitive digraphs. Even though transitive digraphs are nicely structured, many problems are intractable, and their complexity turns out to be difficult to classify. We present some motivational results and several open problems.

Formulas for Partition $k$-Tuples with $t$-Cores

Let $A_{t,k}(n)$ denote the number of partition $k$-tuples of $n$ where each partition is $t$-core. In this paper, we establish formulas of $A_{t,k}(n)$ for some values of $t$ and $k$ by employing the method of modular forms, which extends Wang's result for $t=3$ and $k=2,3$.
