This article is an extensive study of partitions with fixed number of odd and even-indexed odd parts. We use these partitions to generalize recent results of C. Savage and A. Sills. Moreover, we derive explicit formulas for generating functions for partitions with bounds on the largest part, the number of parts and with a fixed value of BG-rank or with a fixed value of alternating sum of parts. We extend the work of C. Boulet, and as a result, obtain a four-variable generalization of Gaussian binomial coefficients. In addition we provide combinatorial interpretation of the Berkovich-Warnaar identity for Rogers-Szego polynomials.
Surprising Relations Between Sums-Of-Squares of Characters of the Symmetric Group Over Two-Rowed Shapes and Over Hook Shapes
In a recent article (arXiv:1507.03499) (joint with Alon Regev) we studied sums of squares of characters Chi(L,M) of the Symmetric Group over shapes L that are two-rowed, and shapes L that are hook shapes, and M is an arbitrary shape that mostly consists of ones, and designed algorithms for closed-form evaluations of each of these. We noted (and proved) that when M is the shape with n cells consisting of 3 followed by n-3 ones, the former sum equals one half time the analogous sum over hook shapes with n+2 cells and M is the partition consisting of 3,2, followed by n-3 ones.
Here we show that this is just a tip of an iceberg, and prove (alas, by purely human means) that the former sum with M consisting of all odd parts, and (possibly) a consecutive string of powers of 2, starting at 2, equals one half of the latter sum where M is replaced by a partition where all the odd parts are retained but the consecutive string of powers of 2: 2,4, ..., $2^{t-1}$ is replaced by $2^t$.
On the existence of unparalleled even cycle systems

A $2t$-cycle system of order $v$ is a set $\mathcal{C}$ of cycles whose edges partition the edge-set of $K_v-I$ (i.e., the complete graph minus the $1$-factor $I$). If $v\equiv 0 \pmod{2t}$, a set of $v/2t$ vertex-disjoint cycles of $\mathcal{C}$ is a parallel class. If $\mathcal{C}$ has no parallel classes, we call such a system unparalleled.
We show that there exists an unparalleled $2t$-cycle system of order $v \equiv 0 \pmod{2t}$ if and only if $v>2t>2$.

We introduce $n(n-1)/2$ natural involutions ("toggles") on the set $S$ of noncrossing partitions $π$ of size $n$, along with certain composite operations obtained by composing these involutions. We show that for many operations $T$ of this kind, a surprisingly large family of functions $f$ on $S$ (including the function that sends $π$ to the number of blocks of $π$) exhibits the homomesy phenomenon: the average of $f$ over the elements of a $T$-orbit is the same for all $T$-orbits. We can apply our method of proof more broadly to toggle operations back on the collection of independent sets of certain graphs. We utilize this generalization to prove a theorem about toggling on a family of graphs called "$2$-cliquish". More generally, the philosophy of this "toggle-action", proposed by Striker, is a popular topic of current and future research in dynamic algebraic combinatorics.
Dichromatic number and fractional chromatic number

The dichromatic number of a graph $G$ is the maximum integer $k$ such that there exists an orientation of the edges of $G$ such that for every partition of the vertices into fewer than $k$ parts, at least one of the parts must contain a directed cycle under this orientation. In 1979, Erdős and Neumann-Lara conjectured that if the dichromatic number of a graph is bounded, so is its chromatic number. We make the first significant progress on this conjecture by proving a fractional version of the conjecture. While our result uses stronger assumption about the fractional chromatic number, it also gives a much stronger conclusion: If the fractional chromatic number of a graph is at least $t$, then the fractional version of the dichromatic number of the graph is at least $\tfrac{1}{4}t/\log_2(2et^2)$. This bound is best possible up to a small constant factor. Several related results of independent interest are given.

For an $r$-uniform hypergraph $H$, let $f(H)$ be the minimum number of complete $r$-partite $r$-uniform subhypergraphs of $H$ whose edge sets partition the edge set of $H$. For a graph $G$, $f(G)$ is the bipartition number of $G$ which was introduced by Graham and Pollak in 1971. In 1988, Erdős conjectured that if $G \in G(n,1/2)$, then with high probability $f(G)=n-α(G)$, where $α(G)$ is the independence number of $G$. This conjecture and related problems have received a lot of attention recently. In this paper, we study the value of $f(H)$ for a typical $r$-uniform hypergraph $H$. More precisely, we prove that if $(\log n)^{2.001}/n \leq p \leq 1/2$ and $H \in H^{(r)}(n,p)$, then with high probability $f(H)=(1-π(K^{(r-1)}_r)+o(1))\binom{n}{r-1}$, where $π(K^{(r-1)}_r)$ is the Turán density of $K^{(r-1)}_r$.
A Pfaffian formula for monomer-dimer partition functions

We consider the monomer-dimer partition function on arbitrary finite planar graphs and arbitrary monomer and dimer weights, with the restriction that the only non-zero monomer weights are those on the boundary. We prove a Pfaffian formula for the corresponding partition function. As a consequence of this result, multipoint boundary monomer correlation functions at close packing are shown to satisfy fermionic statistics. Our proof is based on the celebrated Kasteleyn theorem, combined with a theorem on Pfaffians proved by one of the authors, and a careful labeling and directing procedure of the vertices and edges of the graph.
Equitable Decompositions of Graphs

We investigate connections between the symmetries (automorphisms) of a graph and its spectral properties. Whenever a graph has a symmetry, i.e. a nontrivial automorphism $φ$, it is possible to use $φ$ to decompose any matrix $M\in\mathbb{C}^{n \times n}$ appropriately associated with the graph. The result of this decomposition is a number of strictly smaller matrices whose collective eigenvalues are the same as the eigenvalues of the original matrix $M$. Some of the matrices that can be decomposed are the graph's adjaceny matrix, Laplacian matrix, etc. Because this decomposition has connections to the theory of equitable partitions it is referred to as an equitable decomposition. Since the graph structure of many real-world networks is quite large and has a high degree of symmetry, we discuss how equitable decompositions can be used to effectively bound both the network's spectral radius and spectral gap, which are associated with dynamic processes on the network. Moreover, we show that the techniques used to equitably decompose a graph can be used to bound the number of simple eigenvalues of undirected graphs, where we obtain sharp results of Petersdorf-Sachs type.

We generalize a special case of a theorem of Proctor on the enumeration of lozenge tilings of a hexagon with a maximal staircase removed, using Kuo's graphical condensation method. Additionally, we prove a formula for a weighted version of the given region. The result also extends work of Ciucu and Fischer. By applying the factorization theorem of Ciucu, we are also able to generalize a special case of MacMahon's boxed plane partition formula.

A star $k$-coloring is a proper $k$-coloring where the union of two color classes induces a star forest. While every planar graph is 4-colorable, not every planar graph is star 4-colorable. One method to produce a star 4-coloring is to partition the vertex set into a 2-independent set and a forest; such a partition is called an I,F-partition. We use a combination of potential functions and discharging to prove that every graph with maximum average degree less than $\frac{5}{2}$ has an I,F-partition, which is sharp and answers a question of Cranston and West [A guide to the discharging method, arXiv:1306.4434]. This result implies that planar graphs of girth at least 10 are star 4-colorable, improving upon previous results of Bu, Cranston, Montassier, Raspaud, and Wang [Star coloring of sparse graphs, J. Graph Theory 62 (2009), 201-219].

In this note we give a new proof of a closed formula for the multivariable generating series of diagonally colored Young diagrams. This series also describes the Euler characteristics of certain Nakajima quiver varieties. Our proof is a direct combinatorial argument, based on Andrews' work on generalized Frobenius partitions. We also obtain representations of these series in some particular cases as infinite products.
A weighted sum over generalized Tesler matrices

We generalize previous definitions of Tesler matrices to allow negative matrix entries and negative hook sums. Our main result is an algebraic interpretation of a certain weighted sum over these matrices, which we call the Tesler function. Our interpretation uses a new class of symmetric function specializations which are defined by their values on Macdonald polynomials. As a result of this interpretation, we obtain a Tesler function expression for the Hall inner product $\langle Δ_f e_n, p_{1^{n}}\rangle$, where $Δ_f$ is the delta operator introduced by Bergeron, Garsia, Haiman, and Tesler. We also provide simple formulas for various special cases of Tesler functions which involve $q,t$-binomial coefficients, ordered set partitions, and parking functions. These formulas prove two cases of the recent Delta Conjecture posed by Haglund, Remmel, and the author.

Tibor Gallai conjectured that the edge set of every connected graph $G$ on $n$ vertices can be partitioned into $\lceil n/2\rceil$ paths. Let $\mathcal{G}_{k}$ be the class of all $2k$-regular graphs of girth at least $2k-2$ that admit a pair of disjoint perfect matchings. In this work, we show that Gallai's conjecture holds in $\mathcal{G}_{k}$, for every $k \geq 3$. Further, we prove that for every graph $G$ in $\mathcal{G}_{k}$ on $n$ vertices, there exists a partition of its edge set into $n/2$ paths of lengths in $\{2k-1,2k,2k+1\}$.
A new generalization of Hermite's reciprocity law

Given a partition $λ$ of $n$, the {\it Schur functor} $\mathbb{S}_λ$ associates to any complex vector space $V$, a subspace $\mathbb{S}_λ(V)$ of $V^{\otimes n}$. Hermite's reciprocity law, in terms of the Schur functor, states that $
\mathbb{S}_{(p)}\left(\mathbb{S}_{(q)}(\mathbb{C}^2)\right)\simeq \mathbb{S}_{(q)}\left(\mathbb{S}_{(p)}(\mathbb{C}^2)\right). $
We extend this identity to many other identities of the type $\mathbb{S}_λ\left(\mathbb{S}_δ(\mathbb{C}^2)\right)\simeq \mathbb{S}_μ\left(\mathbb{S}_ε(\mathbb{C}^2)\right)$.

The theory of noncommutative Schur functions can be used to obtain positive combinatorial formulae for the Schur expansion of various classes of symmetric functions, as shown by Fomin and Greene. We develop a theory of noncommutative super Schur functions and use it to prove a positive combinatorial rule for the Kronecker coefficients where one of the partitions is a hook, recovering previous results of the two authors. This method also gives a precise connection between this rule and a heuristic for Kronecker coefficients first investigated by Lascoux.

We show that any subset of the squares of positive relative upper density contains non-trivial solutions to a translation-invariant linear equation in five or more variables, with explicit quantitative bounds. As a consequence, we establish the partition regularity of any diagonal quadric in five or more variables whose coefficients sum to zero. Unlike previous approaches, which are limited to equations in seven or more variables, we employ transference technology of Green to import bounds from the linear setting.
Symmetric group characters as symmetric functions (extended abstract)
The irreducible characters of the symmetric group are a symmetric polynomial in the eigenvalues of a permutation matrix. They can therefore be realized as a symmetric function that can be evaluated at a set of variables and form a basis of the symmetric functions. This basis of the symmetric functions is of non-homogeneous degree and the (outer) product structure coefficients are the stable Kronecker coefficients.
We introduce the irreducible character basis by defining it in terms of the induced trivial characters of the symmetric group which also form a basis of the symmetric functions. The irreducible character basis is closely related to character polynomials and we obtain some of the change of basis coefficients by making this connection explicit. Other change of basis coefficients come from a representation theoretic connection with the partition algebra, and still others are derived by developing combinatorial expressions.
This document is an extended abstract which can be used as a review reference so that this basis can be implemented in Sage. A more complete version of the results in this abstract can be found in {\tt arXiv:1605.06672}.
Partitioning random graphs into monochromatic components

Erdős, Gyárfás, and Pyber (1991) conjectured that every $r$-colored complete graph can be partitioned into at most $r-1$ monochromatic components; this is a strengthening of a conjecture of Lovász (1975) in which the components are only required to form a cover. An important partial result of Haxell and Kohayakawa (1995) shows that a partition into $r$ monochromatic components is possible for sufficiently large $r$-colored complete graphs.
We start by extending Haxell and Kohayakawa's result to graphs with large minimum degree, then we provide some partial analogs of their result for random graphs. In particular, we show that if $p\ge \left(\frac{27\log n}{n}\right)^{1/3}$, then a.a.s. in every $2$-coloring of $G(n,p)$ there exists a partition into two monochromatic components, and for $r\geq 2$ if $p\ll \left(\frac{r\log n}{n}\right)^{1/r}$, then a.a.s. there exists an $r$-coloring of $G(n,p)$ such that there does not exist a cover with a bounded number of components. Finally, we consider a random graph version of a classic result of Gyárfás (1977) about large monochromatic components in $r$-colored complete graphs. We show that if $p=\frac{ω(1)}{n}$, then a.a.s. in every $r$-coloring of $G(n,p)$ there exists a monochromatic component of order at least $(1-o(1))\frac{n}{r-1}$.
