We present new methods of generating Prouhet-Tarry-Escott partitions of arbitrarily large regularity. One of these methods generalizes the construction of the Thue-Morse sequence to finite alphabets with more than two letters. We show how one can use such partitions to (theoretically) pour the same volume coffee from an urn into a finite number of cups so that each cup gets almost the same amount of caffeine.
The Regularity Lemma with bounded VC Dimension
We give a proof of Szemeredi's regularity lemma in the special case of a graph with bounded VC dimension and show that it is possible to obtain "merely" doubly exponential bounds on the size of the partition in this case.

We show that braid groups with at most 6 strands are CAT(0) using the close connection between these groups, the associated non-crossing partition complexes and the embeddability of their diagonal links into spherical buildings of type A. Furthermore, we prove that the orthoscheme complex of any bounded graded modular complemented lattice is CAT(0), giving a partial answer to a conjecture of Brady and McCammond.

We study a family of equivalence relations on $S_n$, the group of permutations on $n$ letters, created in a manner similar to that of the Knuth relation and the forgotten relation. For our purposes, two permutations are in the same equivalence class if one can be reached from the other through a series of pattern-replacements using patterns whose order permutations are in the same part of a predetermined partition of $S_c$.
When the partition is of $S_3$ and has one nontrivial part and that part is of size greater than two, we provide formulas for the number of classes created in each previously unsolved case. When the partition is of $S_3$ and has two nontrivial parts, each of size two (as do the Knuth and forgotten relations), we enumerate the classes for $13$ of the $14$ unresolved cases. In two of these cases, enumerations arise which are the same as those yielded by the Knuth and forgotten relations. The reasons for this phenomenon are still largely a mystery.
Equivalence Classes in $S_n$ for Three Families of Pattern-Replacement Relations
In particular, we are interested in the number of classes created in $S_n$ by each relation and in characterizing these classes.
Imposing the condition that the partition of $S_c$ has one nontrivial part containing the cyclic shifts of a single permutation, we find enumerations for the number of nontrivial classes. When the permutation is the identity, we are able to compare the sizes of these classes and connect parts of the problem to Young tableaux and Catalan lattice paths.
Imposing the condition that the partition has one nontrivial part containing all of the permutations in $S_c$ beginning with 1, we both enumerate and characterize the classes in $S_n$. We do the same for the partition that has two nontrivial parts, one containing all of the permutations in $S_c$ beginning with 1, and one containing all of the permutations in $S_c$ ending with 1.

We present new proofs and generalizations of unimodality of the q-binomial coefficients \binom{n}{k}_q as polynomials in q. We use an algebraic approach by interpreting the differences between numbers of certain partitions as Kronecker coefficients of representations of S_n. Other applications of this approach include strict unimodality of the diagonal q-binomial coefficients and unimodality of certain partition statistics.

An infinite integer matrix A is called image partition regular if, whenever the natural numbers are finitely coloured, there is an integer vector x such that Ax is monochromatic. Given an image partition regular matrix A, can we also insist that each variable x_i is a multiple of some given d_i? This is a question of Hindman, Leader and Strauss.
Our aim in this short note is to show that the answer is negative. As an application, we disprove a conjectured equivalence between the two main forms of partition regularity, namely image partition regularity and kernel partition regularity.

We find exact and asymptotic formulas for the average values of several statistics on set partitions: of Carlitz's $q$-Stirling distributions, of the numbers of crossings in linear and circular representations of set partitions, of the numbers of overlappings and embracings, and of the numbers of occurrences of a 2-pattern.

In studying the enumerative theory of super characters' of the group of upper triangular matrices over a finite field we found that the moments (mean, variance and higher moments) of novel statistics on set partitions have simple closed expressions as linear combinations of shifted bell numbers. It is shown here that families of other statistics have similar moments. The coefficients in the linear combinations are polynomials in $n$. This allows exact enumeration of the moments for small $n$ to determine exact formulae for all $n$.
A New Perspective on Vertex Connectivity

Edge connectivity and vertex connectivity are two fundamental concepts in graph theory. Although by now there is a good understanding of the structure of graphs based on their edge connectivity, our knowledge in the case of vertex connectivity is much more limited. An essential tool in capturing edge connectivity are edge-disjoint spanning trees. The famous results of Tutte and Nash-Williams show that a graph with edge connectivity $λ$ contains $\floor{λ/2}$ edge-disjoint spanning trees.
We present connected dominating set (CDS) partition and packing as tools that are analogous to edge-disjoint spanning trees and that help us to better grasp the structure of graphs based on their vertex connectivity. The objective of the CDS partition problem is to partition the nodes of a graph into as many connected dominating sets as possible. The CDS packing problem is the corresponding fractional relaxation, where CDSs are allowed to overlap as long as this is compensated by assigning appropriate weights. CDS partition and CDS packing can be viewed as the counterparts of the well-studied edge-disjoint spanning trees, focusing on vertex disjointedness rather than edge disjointness.
We constructively show that every $k$-vertex-connected graph with $n$ nodes has a CDS packing of size $Ω(k/\log n)$ and a CDS partition of size $Ω(k/\log^5 n)$. We prove that the $Ω(k/\log n)$ CDS packing bound is existentially optimal.
Using CDS packing, we show that if vertices of a $k$-vertex-connected graph are independently sampled with probability $p$, then the graph induced by the sampled vertices has vertex connectivity $\tildeΩ(kp^2)$. Moreover, using our $Ω(k/\log n)$ CDS packing, we get a store-and-forward broadcast algorithm with optimal throughput in the networking model where in each round, each node can send one bounded-size message to all its neighbors.

Ordered Partitions Avoiding a Permutation of Length 3

An ordered partition of $[n]=\{1, 2, \ldots, n\}$ is a partition whose blocks are endowed with a linear order. Let $\mathcal{OP}_{n,k}$ be set of ordered partitions of $[n]$ with $k$ blocks and $\mathcal{OP}_{n,k}(σ)$ be set of ordered partitions in $\mathcal{OP}_{n,k}$ that avoid a pattern $σ$. Recently, Godbole, Goyt, Herdan and Pudwell obtained formulas for the number of ordered partitions of $[n]$ with 3 blocks and the number of ordered partitions of $[n]$ with $n-1$ blocks avoiding a permutation pattern of length 3. They showed that $|\mathcal{OP}_{n,k}(σ)|=|\mathcal{OP}_{n,k}(123)|$ for any permutation $σ$ of length 3, and raised the question concerning the enumeration of $\mathcal{OP}_{n,k}(123)$. They also conjectured that the number of ordered partitions of $[2n]$ with blocks of size 2 avoiding a permutation pattern of length 3 satisfied a second order linear recurrence relation. In answer to the question of Godbole, et al., we obtain the generating function for $|\mathcal{OP}_{n,k}(123)|$ and we prove the conjecture on the recurrence relation.
Canonization of analytic equivalences on the Carlson-Simpson forcing
We prove a canonization result for the Carlson-Simpson forcing in the spirit of \cite{KSZ}. We generalize the weak form of the Carlson-Simpson theorem (\cite{CaSi}) dealing with partitions without free blocks: instead of dealing with finite Borel (resp. Baire-property) colorings we deal with (uncountable) colorings such that the corresponding equivalence relation (two partitions are equivalent if they are colored by the same color) is analytic.
Closure of principal L-type domain and its parallelotopes
Voronoi defined two polyhedral partitions of the cone of se\mi\de\fi\nite forms into L-type domains and into perfect domains. Up to equivalence, there is only one domain that is simultaneously perfect and L-type. Voronoi called this domain {\em principal}. We show that closure of the principal domain may be identified with a cone of cut submodular set functions. Parallelotopes of the closed principal domain are zonotopes that are base polyhedra related to graphic unimodular sets of vectors.
On the inner structure of a permutation: Bicolored Partitions and Eulerians, Trees and Primitives
We present a bijective algorithm with which an arbitrary permutation decomposes canonically into elementary blocks which we call families, which are sets with a specified number of ascents and descents. We show that families, arranged in an arbitrary order in a sequence, are in bijection with permutations. The permutation decomposes canonically, by inserting parentheses, into a tree having as nodes a class of permutations which we call primitive. Primitive permutations can be assembled from very simple data. The data for the trees into which a permutation decomposes can be written in a form similar to the decimal classification of a library. We axiomatize that data. It has a structure very different from the permutation which it encodes, with shuffles and pairings instead of reorderings. These structures are similar to the fundamental processes in quantum field theory. Our main bijective structure algorithm gives explicit, additive multinomial formulae for the number of permutations with given sets of elements under and over the diagonal, or with given ascent and descent values. The multinomial expressions obtained this way give a new class of bicolored set statistics, between set partitions and set compositions, called shifted multinomials. These provide for the first time additive multinomial expressions for Eulerian numbers and derangements, as part of a sequence of new combinatorial objects. These multinomial expressions satisfy inductive relations involving only immediate neighbors, similar to the relations satisfied by the Eulerian numbers.

In this paper a generalisation of the notion of polarity is exhibited which allows to completely describe, in an incidence-geometric way, the linear complexes of $h$-subspaces. A generalised polarity is defined to be a partial map which maps $(h-1)$-subspaces to hyperplanes, satisfying suitable linearity and reciprocity properties. Generalised polarities with the null property give rise to a linear complexes and vice versa. Given that there exists for $h>1$ a linear complex of $h$-subspaces which contains no star --this seems to be an open problem over an arbitrary ground field --the combinatorial structure of a partition of the line set of the projective space into non-geometric spreads of its hyperplanes can be obtained. This line partition has an additional linearity property which turns out to be characteristic.
Coverings by few monochromatic pieces - a transition between two Ramsey problems
The typical problem in (generalized) Ramsey theory is to find the order of the largest monochromatic member of a family F (for example matchings, paths, cycles, connected subgraphs) that must be present in any edge coloring of a complete graph K_n with t colors. Another area is to find the minimum number of monochromatic members of F that partition or cover the vertex set of every edge colored complete graph. Here we propose a problem that connects these areas: for fixed positive integers s,t, at least how many vertices can be covered by the vertices of no more than s monochromatic members of F in every edge coloring of K_n with t colors. Several problems and conjectures are presented, among them a possible extension of a well-known result of Cockayne and Lorimer on monochromatic matchings for which we prove an initial step: in case of s=t-1 we determine how many vertices can be covered by s monochromatic matchings in every t-coloring of K_n.

It is known that Euler numbers, defined as the Taylor coefficients of the tangent and secant functions, count alternating permutations in the symmetric group. Springer defined a generalization of these numbers for each finite Coxeter group by considering the largest descent class, and computed the value in each case of the classification. We consider here another generalization of Euler numbers for finite Coxeter groups, building on Stanley's result about the number of orbits of maximal chains of set partitions. We present a method to compute these integers and obtain the value in each case of the classification.
Fourier-Reflexive Partitions and MacWilliams Identities for Additive Codes

A partition of a finite abelian group gives rise to a dual partition on the character group via the Fourier transform. Properties of the dual partitions are investigated and a convenient test is given for the case that the bidual partition coincides the primal partition. Such partitions permit MacWilliams identities for the partition enumerators of additive codes. It is shown that dualization commutes with taking products and symmetrized products of partitions on cartesian powers of the given group. After translating the results to Frobenius rings, which are identified with their character module, the approach is applied to partitions that arise from poset structures.

The notion of broken $k$-diamond partitions was introduced by Andrews and Paule. Let $Δ_k(n)$ denote the number of broken k-diamond partitions of $n$. They also posed three conjectures on the congruences of $Δ_2(n)$ modulo 2, 5 and 25. Hirschhorn and sellers proved the conjectures for modulo 2, and Chan proved cases of modulo 5. For the case of modulo 3, Radu and Sellers obtained an infinite family of congruences for $Δ_2(n)$. In this paper, we obtain two infinite families of congruences for $Δ_2(n)$ modulo 3 based on a formula of Radu and Sellers, the 3-dissection formula of the generating function of triangular number due to Berndt, and the properties of the $U$-operator, the $V$-operator, the Hecke operator and the Hecke eigenform. For example, we find that $Δ_2(243n+142)\equiv Δ_2(243n+223)\equiv0\pmod{3}$. The infinite family of Radu and Sellers and the two infinite families derived in this paper have two congruences in common, namely, $Δ_2(27n+16)\equivΔ_2(27n+25)\equiv0 \pmod{3}$.
