Stabilization of coefficients for partition polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
We find that a wide variety of families of partition statistics stabilize in a fashion similar to $p_k(n)$, the number of partitions of n with k parts, which satisfies $p_k(n) = p_{k+1}(n + 1), k \geq n/2$. We bound the regions of stabilization, discuss variants on the phenomenon, and give the limiting sequence in many cases as the coefficients of a single-variable generating function. Examples include many statistics that have an Euler product form, partitions with prescribed subsums, and plane overpartitions.

A Set of Questions in Combinatorial and Metric Geometry
We briefly introduce several problems: (1) a generalization of the convex fair partition conjecture, (2) on non-trivial invariants among polyhedrons that can be formed from the same set of face polygons, (3) two questions on assembling rectangular tiles to form larger rectangles and (4) on convex regions which maximize and minimize the diameter for specified area and perimeter. For each question, we discuss partial solutions and indicate aspects that to our knowledge, await exploration.

Cohen-Lenstra heuristics and random matrix theory over finite fields
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let g be a random element of a finite classical group G, and let λ_{z-1}(g) denote the partition corresponding to the polynomial z-1 in the rational canonical form of g. As the rank of G tends to infinity, λ_{z-1}(g) tends to a partition distributed according to a Cohen-Lenstra type measure on partitions. We give sharp upper and lower bounds on the total variation distance between the random partition λ_{z-1}(g) and the Cohen-Lenstra type measure.

Pattern avoidance in ordered set partitions and words
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider the enumeration of ordered set partitions avoiding a permutation pattern, as introduced by Godbole, Goyt, Herdan and Pudwell. Let $\op_{n,k}(p)$ be the number of ordered set partitions of $\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$ into $k$ blocks that avoid a permutation pattern $p$. We establish an explicit identity between the number $\op_{n,k}(p)$ and the numbers of words avoiding the inverse of $p$. This identity allows us to easily translate results on pattern-avoiding words obtained in earlier works into equivalent results on pattern-avoiding ordered set partitions. In particular, \emph{(a)} we determine the asymptotic growth rate of the sequence $(\op_{n,k}(p))_{n\geq 1}$ for every positive $k$ and every permutation pattern $p$, \emph{(b)} we partially confirm a conjecture of Godbole et al. concerning the variation of the sequences $(\op_{n,k}p))_{1\leq k\leq n}$, \emph{(c)} we undertake a detailed study of the number of ordered set partitions avoiding a pattern of length 3.

T-systems, networks and dimers
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the solutions of the T-system for type A, also known as the octahedron equation, viewed as a 2+1-dimensional discrete evolution equation. These may be expressed entirely in terms of the stepped surface over which the initial data are specified, via a suitably defined flat $GL_n$ connection which embodies the integrability of this infinite rank system. By interpreting the connection as the transfer operator for a directed graph or network with weighted edges, we show that the solution at a given point is expressed as the partition function for dimers on a bipartite graph dual to the "shadow" of the point onto the initial data stepped surface. We extend the result to the case of other geometries such as that of the evaporation of a cube corner crystal, and to a reformulation of the Kenyon-Pemantle discrete hexahedron equation.

Self-conjugate core partitions and modular forms
Published • View PublicationBIB
A recent paper by Hanusa and Nath states many conjectures in the study of self-conjugate core partitions. We prove all but two of these conjectures asymptotically by number-theoretic means. We also obtain exact formulas for the number of self-conjugate t-core partitions for "small" t via explicit computations with modular forms. For instance, self-conjugate 9-core partitions are related to counting points on elliptic curves over \Q with conductor dividing 108, and self-conjugate 6-core partitions are related to the representations of integers congruent to 11 mod 24 by 3X^2 + 32Y^2 + 96Z^2, a form with finitely many (conjecturally five) exceptional integers in this arithmetic progression, by an ineffective result of Duke--Schulze-Pillot.

Huffman coding as an algorithm to construct chains in partition lattices
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Huffman coding algorithm is interpreted in the lattice of partitions of the source alphabet. Maximal chains in the partition lattice correspond to linear extensions of tree orders, and those among the chains that exhibit a simple greedy property correspond precisely to executions of the Huffman algorithm.

Interval decomposition lattices are balanced
Published in Demonstratio Mathematica, Volume 49 (2016) Issue 3, Pages 271-281 • View PublicationBIB
Intervals in binary or n-ary relations or other discrete structures generalize the concept of interval in a linearly ordered set. Join-irreducible partitions into intervals are characterized in the lattice of all interval decompositions of a set, in a general sense of intervals defined axiomatically. This characterization is used to show that the lattice of interval decompositions is balanced.
Modular Schur numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
For any positive integers l and m, a set of integers is said to be (weakly) l-sum-free modulo m if it contains no (pairwise distinct) elements $x_1,x_2,...,x_l,y$ satisfying the congruence $x_1+\...+x_l\equiv y\bmod{m}$. It is proved that, for any positive integers k and l, there exists a largest integer $n$ for which the set of the first $n$ positive integers $\{1,2,\...,n\}$ admits a partition into k (weakly) l-sum-free sets modulo m. This number is called the generalized (weak) Schur number modulo $m$, associated with k and l. In this paper, for all positive integers k and l, the exact value of these modular Schur numbers are determined for m=1, 2 and 3.

A partition inequality involving products of two $q$-Pochhammer symbols
Published • View PublicationBIB
We use an injection method to prove a new class of partition inequalities involving certain $q$-products with two to four finitization parameters. Our new theorems are a substantial generalization of work by Andrews and of previous work by Berkovich and Grizzell. We also briefly discuss how our products might relate to lecture hall partitions.

Flows on Honeycombs and Sums of Littlewood-Richardson Tableaux
Published • View PublicationBIB
Suppose μand μ' are two partitions. We will let μ\oplus μ' denote the "direct sum" of the partitions, defined as the sorted partition made of the parts of $μ$ and $μ'$. In this paper, we define a summation operation on two Littlewood-Richardson fillings of type (μ, ν;λ) and (μ', ν';λ'), which results in a Littlewood-Richardson filling of type (μ\oplus μ', ν\oplus ν' ;λ\oplus λ'). We give an algorithm to produce the sum, and show that it terminates in a Littlewood-Richardson filling by defining a bijection between a Littlewood-Richardson filling and a flow on a honeycomb, and then showing that the overlay of the two honeycombs of appropriate type corresponds to the sum of the two fillings.

Counting genus one partitions and permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove the conjecture by M. Yip stating that counting genus one partitions by the number of their elements and parts yields, up to a shift of indices, the same array of numbers as counting genus one rooted hypermonopoles. Our proof involves representing each genus one permutation by a four-colored noncrossing partition. This representation may be selected in a unique way for permutations containing no trivial cycles. The conclusion follows from a general generating function formula that holds for any class of permutations that is closed under the removal and reinsertion of trivial cycles. Our method also provides a new way to count rooted hypermonopoles of genus one, and puts the spotlight on a class of genus one permutations that is invariant under an obvious extension of the Kreweras duality map to genus one permutations.
On the Godsil -- Higman necessary condition for equitable partitions of association schemes
In the monograph 'Association schemes', C. Godsil derived a necessary condition for equitable partitions of association schemes and noticed that it could be used to show that certain equitable partitions do not exist. In this short note, we show that, in fact, this condition is not stronger than the well-known Lloyd theorem.

alpha-Kuramoto partitions: graph partitions from the frustrated Kuramoto model generalise equitable partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Kuramoto model describes the collective dynamics of a system of coupled oscillators. An alpha-Kuramoto partition is a graph partition induced by the Kuramoto model, when the oscillators include a phase frustration parameter. We prove that every equitable partition is an alpha-Kuramoto partition, but that the converse does necessarily not hold. We give an exact characterisation of alpha-Kuramoto bipartitions.

Unavoidable vertex-minors in large prime graphs
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics, Volume 41, Pages 100-127, 2014 • View PublicationBIB
A graph is prime (with respect to the split decomposition) if its vertex set does not admit a partition (A,B) (called a split) with |A|, |B| >= 2 such that the set of edges joining A and B induces a complete bipartite graph. We prove that for each n, there exists N such that every prime graph on at least N vertices contains a vertex-minor isomorphic to either a cycle of length n or a graph consisting of two disjoint cliques of size n joined by a matching.
Canonical Labelling of Site Graphs
Published in EPTCS 116, 2013, pp. 13-28 • View PublicationBIB
We investigate algorithms for canonical labelling of site graphs, i.e. graphs in which edges bind vertices on sites with locally unique names. We first show that the problem of canonical labelling of site graphs reduces to the problem of canonical labelling of graphs with edge colourings. We then present two canonical labelling algorithms based on edge enumeration, and a third based on an extension of Hopcroft's partition refinement algorithm. All run in quadratic worst case time individually. However, one of the edge enumeration algorithms runs in sub-quadratic time for graphs with "many" automorphisms, and the partition refinement algorithm runs in sub-quadratic time for graphs with "few" bisimulation equivalences. This suite of algorithms was chosen based on the expectation that graphs fall in one of those two categories. If that is the case, a combined algorithm runs in sub-quadratic worst case time. Whether this expectation is reasonable remains an interesting open problem.

Truncation symmetry type graphs
There are operations that transform a map M (an embedding of a graph on a surface) into another map in the same surface, modifying its structure and consequently its set of flags F(M). For instance, by truncating all the vertices of a map M, each flag in F(M) is divided into three flags of the truncated map. Orbanic, Pellicer and Weiss studied the truncation of k-orbit maps for k < 4. They introduced the notion of T-compatible maps in order to give a necessary condition for a truncation of a k-orbit map to be either k-, 3k/2- or 3k-orbit map. Using a similar notion, by introducing an appropriate partition on the set of flags of the maps, we extend the results on truncation of k-orbit maps for k < 8 and k=9.

Matrix Partitions of Split Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Matrix partition problems generalize a number of natural graph partition problems, and have been studied for several standard graph classes. We prove that each matrix partition problem has only finitely many minimal obstructions for split graphs. Previously such a result was only known for the class of cographs. (In particular, there are matrix partition problems which have infinitely many minimal chordal obstructions.) We provide (close) upper and lower bounds on the maximum size of a minimal split obstruction. This shows for the first time that some matrices have exponential-sized minimal obstructions of any kind (not necessarily split graphs). We also discuss matrix partitions for bipartite and co-bipartite graphs.

Generalized Macaulay representations and the flag $f$-vectors of generalized colored complexes
A colored complex of type $\mathbf{a} = (a_1, \dots, a_n)$ is a simplicial complex $Δ$ on a vertex set $V$, together with an ordered partition $(V_1, \dots, V_n)$ of $V$, such that every face $F$ of $Δ$ satisfies $|F \cap V_i| \leq a_i$. For each $\mathbf{b} = (b_1, \dots, b_n) \leq \mathbf{a}$, let $f_{\mathbf{b}}$ be the number of faces $F$ of $Δ$ such that $|F \cap V_i| = b_i$. The array of integers $\{f_{\mathbf{b}}\}_{\mathbf{b} \leq \mathbf{a}}$ is called the fine $f$-vector of $Δ$, and it is a refinement of the $f$-vector of $Δ$. In this paper, we generalize the notion of Macaulay representations and give a numerical characterization of the fine $f$-vectors of colored complexes of arbitrary type, in terms of these generalized Macaulay representations. As part of the proof, we introduce the property of $\mathbf{a}$-Macaulay decomposability for simplicial complexes, which implies vertex-decomposability, and we show that every pure color-shifted balanced complex $Δ$ of type $\mathbf{a}$ is $\mathbf{a}$-Macaulay decomposable. Combined with previously known results, we also obtain a numerical characterization of the flag $f$-vectors of completely balanced Cohen-Macaulay complexes.
