Point determining digraphs, $\{0,1\}$-matrix partitions, and dualities in full homomorphisms
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove that every point-determining digraph $D$ contains a vertex $v$ such that $D-v$ is also point determining. We apply this result to show that for any $\{0,1\}$-matrix $M$, with $k$ diagonal zeros and $\ell$ diagonal ones, the size of a minimal $M$-obstruction is at most $(k+1)(\ell+1)$. This extends the results of Sumner, and of Feder and Hell, from undirected graphs and symmetric matrices to digraphs and general matrices.

On the partition of R^n by hyperplanes
Published • View PublicationBIB
The partitioning of space by hyperplanes in the context of discrete classification problem is considered. We obtain some relations for the number of partitions and establish a recurrence relation for the maximal number of partitions of R^n by m hyperplanes. We rederive an explicit formula for the number of components into which the space can be partitioned by m hyperplanes.
The number of complete exceptional sequences for a Dynkin algebra
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider Dynkin algebras, these are the hereditary artin algebras of finite representation type. The indecomposable modules for a Dynkin algebra correspond bijectively to the positive roots of a Dynkin diagram. Given a Dynkin algebra with n simple modules, a complete exceptional sequence is a sequence M_1,..., M_n of indecomposable modules such that Hom(M_i,M_j) = 0 = Ext(M_i,M_j) for i > j. The aim of this paper is to determine the number of complete exceptional sequences for any Dynkin algebra. There are direct connections between the representation theory of a Dynkin algebra A and the lattice L of non-crossing partitions of the same Dynkin type: As Ingalls and Thomas have shown, the lattice of the thick subcategories of mod A can be identified with L. Hubery and Krause have pointed out that this identification provides a bijection between the complete exceptional sequences for A and the maximal chains in L. Thus, our calculations may also be considered as a categorification of results concerning non-crossing partitions.

Biclique Covers and Partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
The biclique cover number (resp. biclique partition number) of a graph $G$, $\mathrm{bc}(G$) (resp. $\mathrm{bp}(G)$), is the least number of biclique (complete bipartite) subgraphs that are needed to cover (resp. partition) the edges of $G$. The \emph{local biclique cover number} (resp. local biclique partition number) of a graph $G$, $\mathrm{lbc}(G$) (resp. $\mathrm{lbp}(G)$), is the least $r$ such that there is a cover (resp. partition) of the edges of $G$ by bicliques with no vertex in more than $r$ of these bicliques. We show that $\mathrm{bp}(G)$ may be bounded in terms of $\mathrm{bc}(G)$, in particular, $\mathrm{bp}(G)\leq \frac{1}{2}(3^\mathrm{bc(G)}-1)$. However, the analogous result does not hold for the local measures. Indeed, in our main result, we show that $\mathrm{lbp}(G)$ can be arbitrarily large, even for graphs with $\mathrm{lbc}(G)=2$. For such graphs, $G$, we try to bound $\mathrm{lbp}(G)$ in terms of additional information about biclique covers of $G$. We both answer and leave open questions related to this. There is a well known link between biclique covers and subcube intersection graphs. We consider the problem of finding the least $r(n)$ for which every graph on $n$ vertices can be represented as a subcube intersection graph in which every subcube has dimension $r$. We reduce this problem to the much studied question of finding the least $d(n)$ such that every graph on $n$ vertices is the intersection graph of subcubes of a $d$-dimensional cube.

The number of fixed points of Wilf's partition involution
Published • View PublicationBIB
Wilf partitions are partitions of an integer $n$ in which all nonzero multiplicities are distinct. On his webpage, the late Herbert Wilf posed the problem to find "any interesting theorems" about the number f(n) of those partitions. Recently, Fill, Janson and Ward (and independently Kane and Rhoades) determined an asymptotic formula for $\log f(n)$. Since the original motivation for studying Wilf partitions was the fact that the operation that interchanges part sizes and multiplicities is an involution on the set of Wilf partitions, they mentioned as an open problem to determine a similar asymptotic formula for the number of fixed points of this involution, which we denote by F(n). In this short note, we show that the method of Fill, Janson and Ward also applies to F(n). Specifically, we obtain the asymptotic formula $\log F(n) \sim \frac12 \log f(n)$.

Analytic combinatorics of chord and hyperchord diagrams with $k$ crossings
Published in Adv. in Appl. Math., 57:60-100, 2014 • View PublicationBIB
Using methods from Analytic Combinatorics, we study the families of perfect matchings, partitions, chord diagrams, and hyperchord diagrams on a disk with a prescribed number of crossings. For each family, we express the generating function of the configurations with exactly $k$ crossings as a rational function of the generating function of crossing-free configurations. Using these expressions, we study the singular behavior of these generating functions and derive asymptotic results on the counting sequences of the configurations with precisely $k$ crossings. Limiting distributions and random generators are also studied.

Comparing skew Schur functions: a quasisymmetric perspective
Published in J. Combin., 5 (1) (2014) 51-85 • View PublicationBIB
Reiner, Shaw and van Willigenburg showed that if two skew Schur functions s_A and s_B are equal, then the skew shapes A and B must have the same "row overlap partitions." Here we show that these row overlap equalities are also implied by a much weaker condition than skew Schur equality: that s_A and s_B have the same support when expanded in the fundamental quasisymmetric basis F. Surprisingly, there is significant evidence supporting a conjecture that the converse is also true. In fact, we work in terms of inequalities, showing that if the F-support of s_A contains that of s_B, then the row overlap partitions of A are dominated by those of B, and again conjecture that the converse also holds. Our evidence in favor of these conjectures includes their consistency with a complete determination of all F-support containment relations for F-multiplicity-free skew Schur functions. We conclude with a consideration of how some other quasisymmetric bases fit into our framework.

In this article, we introduce the notion of the double competition multigraph of a digraph. We give characterizations of the double competition multigraphs of arbitrary digraphs, loopless digraphs, reflexive digraphs, and acyclic digraphs in terms of edge clique partitions of the multigraphs.

Internal Partitions of Regular Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
An internal partition of an $n$-vertex graph $G=(V,E)$ is a partition of $V$ such that every vertex has at least as many neighbors in its own part as in the other part. It has been conjectured that every $d$-regular graph with $n>N(d)$ vertices has an internal partition. Here we prove this for $d=6$. The case $d=n-4$ is of particular interest and leads to interesting new open problems on cubic graphs. We also provide new lower bounds on $N(d)$ and find new families of graphs with no internal partitions. Weighted versions of these problems are considered as well.
A decomposition based proof for fast mixing of a Markov chain over balanced realizations of a joint degree matrix
Published in SIAM J. Discrete Mathematics 29 (1) (2015), 481-499 • View PublicationBIB
A joint degree matrix (JDM) specifies the number of connections between nodes of given degrees in a graph, for all degree pairs and uniquely determines the degree sequence of the graph. We consider the space of all balanced realizations of an arbitrary JDM, realizations in which the links between any two degree groups are placed as uniformly as possible. We prove that a swap Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithm in the space of all balanced realizations of an {\em arbitrary} graphical JDM mixes rapidly, i.e., the relaxation time of the chain is bounded from above by a polynomial in the number of nodes $n$. To prove fast mixing, we first prove a general factorization theorem similar to the Martin-Randall method for disjoint decompositions (partitions). This theorem can be used to bound from below the spectral gap with the help of fast mixing subchains within every partition and a bound on an auxiliary Markov chain between the partitions. Our proof of the general factorization theorem is direct and uses conductance based methods (Cheeger inequality).

$Q$-polynomial distance-regular graphs and a double affine Hecke algebra of rank one
Published in Linear Algebra Appl. 439 (2013), no. 10, 3184--3240 • View PublicationBIB
We study a relationship between $Q$-polynomial distance-regular graphs and the double affine Hecke algebra of type $(C^{\vee}_1,C_1)$. Let $Γ$ denote a $Q$-polynomial distance-regular graph with vertex set $X$. We assume that $Γ$ has $q$-Racah type and contains a Delsarte clique $C$. Fix a vertex $x \in C$. We partition $X$ according to the path-length distance to both $x$ and $C$. This is an equitable partition. For each cell in this partition, consider the corresponding characteristic vector. These characteristic vectors form a basis for a $\mathbb{C}$-vector space ${\bf W}$. The universal double affine Hecke algebra of type $(C^{\vee}_1,C_1)$ is the $\mathbb{C}$-algebra $\hat{H}_q$ defined by generators $\{t^{\pm1}_n\}^3_{n=0}$ and relations (i) $t_nt_n^{-1}=t_n^{-1}t_n=1$; (ii) $t_n+t_n^{-1}$ is central; (iii) $t_0t_1t_2t_3 = q^{-1/2}$. In this paper, we display an $\hat{H}_q$-module structure for ${\bf W}$. For this module and up to affine transformation, (i) $t_0t_1+(t_0t_1)^{-1}$ acts as the adjacency matrix of $Γ$; (ii) $t_3t_0+(t_3t_0)^{-1}$ acts as the dual adjacency matrix of $Γ$ with respect to $C$; (iii) $t_1t_2+(t_1t_2)^{-1}$ acts as the dual adjacency matrix of $Γ$ with respect to $x$. To obtain our results we use the theory of Leonard systems.

Approximating Minimum Cost Connectivity Orientation and Augmentation
Published • View PublicationBIB
We investigate problems addressing combined connectivity augmentation and orientations settings. We give a polynomial-time 6-approximation algorithm for finding a minimum cost subgraph of an undirected graph $G$ that admits an orientation covering a nonnegative crossing $G$-supermodular demand function, as defined by Frank. An important example is $(k,\ell)$-edge-connectivity, a common generalization of global and rooted edge-connectivity. Our algorithm is based on a non-standard application of the iterative rounding method. We observe that the standard linear program with cut constraints is not amenable and use an alternative linear program with partition and co-partition constraints instead. The proof requires a new type of uncrossing technique on partitions and co-partitions. We also consider the problem setting when the cost of an edge can be different for the two possible orientations. The problem becomes substantially more difficult already for the simpler requirement of $k$-edge-connectivity. Khanna, Naor, and Shepherd showed that the integrality gap of the natural linear program is at most $4$ when $k=1$ and conjectured that it is constant for all fixed $k$. We disprove this conjecture by showing an $Ω(|V|)$ integrality gap even when $k=2$.
Counting subwords in flattened permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we consider the number of occurrences of descents, ascents, 123-subwords, 321-subwords, peaks and valleys in flattened permutations, which were recently introduced by Callan in his study of finite set partitions. For descents and ascents, we make use of the kernel method and obtain an explicit formula (in terms of Eulerian polynomials) for the distribution on $\mathcal{S}_n$ in the flattened sense. For the other four patterns in question, we develop a unified approach to obtain explicit formulas for the comparable distributions. We find that the formulas so obtained for 123- and 321-subwords can be expressed in terms of the Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind, while those for peaks and valleys are more related to the Eulerian polynomials. We also provide a bijection showing the equidistribution of descents in flattened permutations of a given length with big descents in permutations of the same length in the usual sense.

A note on the characteristic rank and related numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
This note quantifies, via a sharp inequality, an interplay between (a) the characteristic rank of a vector bundle over a topological space X, (b) the Z/2Z-Betti numbers of X, and (c) sums of the numbers of certain partitions of integers. In a particular context, (c) is transformed into a sum of the readily calculable Betti numbers of the real Grassmann manifolds.

Unique expansion matroids and union minimal matroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
The expansion axiom of matroids requires only the existence of some kind of independent sets, not the uniqueness of them. This causes that the base families of some matroids can be reduced while the unions of the base families of these matroids remain unchanged. In this paper, we define unique expansion matroids in which the expansion axiom has some extent uniqueness; we define union minimal matroids in which the base families have some extent minimality. Some properties of them and the relationship between them are studied. First, we propose the concepts of secondary base and forming base family. Secondly, we propose the concept of unique expansion matroid, and prove that a matroid is a unique expansion matroid if and only if its forming base family is a partition. Thirdly, we propose the concept of union minimal matroid, and prove that unique expansion matroids are union minimal matroids. Finally, we extend the concept of unique expansion matroid to unique exchange matroid and prove that both unique expansion matroids and their dual matroids are unique exchange matroids.

An elementary non-recursive expression for the partition function P(n)
Published in Physica 114A, 1982, 361-364 • Search Publication
Consideration of a classification of the number of partitions of a natural number according to the members of sub-partitions differing from unity leads to a non-recursive formula for the number of irreducible representations of the symmetric group Sn. This article was published, long ago, under the title A non-recursive expression for the number of irreducible representations of the Symmetric Group Sn, Physica 114A, 1982, 361-364, North-Holland Publishing Co. The Introduction has been, somewhat, improved, however, the handmade result remains unproved.

Homology of analogues of Heisenberg Lie algebras
Published in Math. Res. Lett. 22 (2015), no. 4, 1223-1241 • View PublicationBIB
We calculate the homology of three families of 2-step nilpotent Lie (super)algebras associated with the symplectic, orthogonal, and general linear groups. The symplectic case was considered by Getzler and the main motivation for this work was to complete the calculations started by him. In all three cases, these algebras can be realized as the nilpotent radical of a parabolic subalgebra of a simple Lie algebra, and our first approach relies on a theorem of Kostant, but is otherwise elementary and involves combinatorics of Weyl groups and partitions which may be of independent interest. Our second approach is an application of (un)stable representation theory of the classical groups in the sense of recent joint work of the author with Snowden, which is shorter and more conceptual.

Schur's partition theorem and mixed mock modular forms
We study families of partitions with gap conditions that were introduced by Schur and Andrews, and describe their fundamental connections to combinatorial q-series and automorphic forms. In particular, we show that the generating functions for these families naturally lead to deep identities for theta functions and Hickerson's universal mock theta function, which provides a very general answer to Andrews' Conjecture on the modularity of the Schur-type generating function. Furthermore, we also complete the second part of Andrews' speculation by determining the asymptotic behavior of these functions. In particular, we use Wright's Circle Method in order to prove families of asymptotic inequalities in the spirit of the Alder-Andrews Conjecture. As a final application, we prove the striking result that the universal mock theta function can be expressed as a conditional probability in a certain natural probability space with an infinite sequence of independent events.

Partitions of a Finite Partially Ordered Set
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we investigate the notion of partition of a finite partially ordered set (poset, for short). We will define three different notions of partition of a poset, namely, monotone, regular, and open partition. For each of these notions we will find three equivalent definitions, that will be shown to be equivalent. We start by defining partitions of a poset in terms of fibres of some surjection having the poset as domain. We then obtain combinatorial characterisations of such notions in terms of blocks, without reference to surjection. Finally, we give a further, equivalent definition of each kind of partition by means of analogues of equivalence relations.
