We study the remarkable Saxl conjecture which states that tensor squares of certain irreducible representations of the symmetric groups S_n contain all irreducibles as their constituents. Our main result is that they contain representations corresponding to hooks and two row Young diagrams. For that, we develop a new sufficient condition for the positivity of Kronecker coefficients in terms of characters, and use combinatorics of rim hook tableaux combined with known results on unimodality of certain partition functions. We also present connections and speculations on random characters of S_n.

By finding the congruent relations between the generating function of the 5 dots bracelet partitions and that of the 5-regular partitions, we get some new congruences modulo 2 for the 5 dots bracelet partition function. Moreover, for a given prime $p$, we study the arithmetic properties modulo $p$ of the $k$ dots bracelet partitions.

In 1995 in Kourovka notebook the second author asked the following problem: it is true that for each partition $G=A_1\cup\dots\cup A_n$ of a group $G$ there is a cell $A_i$ of the partition such that $G=FA_iA_i^{-1}$ for some set $F\subset G$ of cardinality $|F|\le n$? In this paper we survey several partial solutions of this problem, in particular those involving certain canonical invariant densities and submeasures on groups.

For every integer $k\geq 2$ let $[k]^{<\mathbb{N}}$ be the set of all words over $k$, that is, all finite sequences having values in $[k]:=\{1,...,k\}$. A Carlson-Simpson tree of $[k]^{<\mathbb{N}}$ of dimension $m\geq 1$ is a subset of $[k]^{<\mathbb{N}}$ of the form \[ \{w\}\cup \big\{w^{\smallfrown}w_0(a_0)^{\smallfrown}...^{\smallfrown}w_{n}(a_n): n\in \{0,...,m-1\} \text{ and } a_0,...,a_n\in [k]\big\} \] where $w$ is a word over $k$ and $(w_n)_{n=0}^{m-1}$ is a finite sequence of left variable words over $k$. We study the behavior of a family of measurable events in a probability space indexed by the elements of a Carlson-Simpson tree of sufficiently large dimension. Specifically we show the following.
For every integer $k\geq 2$, every $0<\varepsilon\leq 1$ and every integer $n\geq 1$ there exists a strictly positive constant $θ(k,\varepsilon,n)$ with the following property. If $m$ is a given positive integer, then there exists an integer $\mathrm{Cor}(k,\varepsilon,m)$ such that for every Carlson--Simpson tree $T$ of $[k]^{<\mathbb{N}}$ of dimension at least $\mathrm{Cor}(k,\varepsilon,m)$ and every family $\{A_t:t\in T\}$ of measurable events in a probability space $(Ω,Σ,μ)$ satisfying $μ(A_t)\geq \varepsilon$ for every $t\in T$, there exists a Carlson--Simpson tree $S$ of dimension $m$ with $S\subseteq T$ and such that for every nonempty $F\subseteq S$ we have \[μ\Big(\bigcap_{t\in F} A_t\Big) \geq θ(k,\varepsilon,|F|). \] The proof is based, among others, on the density version of the Carlson--Simpson Theorem established recently by the authors, as well as, on a partition result -- of independent interest -- closely related to the work of T. J. Carlson, and H. Furstenberg and Y. Katznelson. The argument is effective and yields explicit lower bounds for the constants $θ(k,\varepsilon,n)$.
Uniformity of multiplicative functions and partition regularity of some quadratic equations
Since the theorems of Schur and van der Waerden, numerous partition regularity results have been proved for linear equations, but progress has been scarce for non-linear ones, the hardest case being equations in three variables. We prove partition regularity for certain equations involving forms in three variables, showing for example that the equations $16x^2+9y^2=n^2$ and $x^2+y^2-xy=n^2$ are partition regular, where $n$ is allowed to vary freely in $\mathbb{N}$. For each such problem we establish a density analogue that can be formulated in ergodic terms as a recurrence property for actions by dilations on a probability space. Our key tool for establishing such recurrence properties is a decomposition result for multiplicative functions which is of independent interest. Roughly speaking, it states that the arbitrary multiplicative function of modulus 1 can be decomposed into two terms, one that is approximately periodic and another that has small Gowers uniformity norm of degree three.

Kloks, Kratsch, and Spinrad showed how treewidth and minimum-fill, NP-hard combinatorial optimization problems related to minimal triangulations, are broken into subproblems by block subgraphs defined by minimal separators. These ideas were expanded on by Bouchitté and Todinca, who used potential maximal cliques to solve these problems using a dynamic programming approach in time polynomial in the number of minimal separators of a graph. It is known that solutions to the perfect phylogeny problem, maximum compatibility problem, and unique perfect phylogeny problem are characterized by minimal triangulations of the partition intersection graph. In this paper, we show that techniques similar to those proposed by Bouchitté and Todinca can be used to solve the perfect phylogeny problem with missing data, the two- state maximum compatibility problem with missing data, and the unique perfect phylogeny problem with missing data in time polynomial in the number of minimal separators of the partition intersection graph.

We show that the refined Donaldson-Thomas invariants of C3, suitably normalized, have a Gaussian distribution as limit law. Combinatorially these numbers are given by weighted counts of 3D partitions. Our technique is to use the Hardy-Littlewood circle method to analyze the bivariate asymptotics of a q-deformation of MacMahon's function. The proof is based on that of E.M. Wright who explored the single variable case.

In the dynamics of a rotation of the unit circle by an irrational angle $α\in(0,1)$, we study the evolution of partitions whose atoms are finite unions of left-closed right-open intervals with endpoints lying on the past trajectory of the point $0$. Unlike the standard framework, we focus on partitions whose atoms are disconnected sets. We show that the refinements of these partitions eventually coincide with the refinements of a preimage of the Sturmian partition, which consists of two intervals $[0,1-α)$ and $[1-α,1)$. In particular, the refinements of the partitions eventually consist of connected sets, i.e., intervals. We reformulate this result in terms of Sturmian subshifts: we show that for every non-trivial factor mapping from a one-sided Sturmian subshift, satisfying a mild technical assumption, the sliding block code of sufficiently large length induced by the mapping is injective.
Rank-unimodality of Young's lattice via explicit chain decomposition
Young's lattice $L(m,n)$ consists of partitions having $m$ parts of size at most $n$, ordered by inclusion of the corresponding Ferrers diagrams. K. O'Hara gave the first constructive proof of the unimodality of the Gaussian polynomials by expressing the underlying ranked set of $L(m,n)$ as a disjoint union of products of centered rank-unimodal subsets. We construct a finer decomposition which is compatible with the partial order on Young's lattice, at the cost of replacing the cartesian product with a more general poset extension. As a corollary, we obtain an explicit chain decomposition which exhibits the rank-unimodality of $L(m,n)$. Moreover, this set of chains is closed under the natural rank-flipping involution given by taking complements of Ferrers diagrams.

In this paper we provide proofs of two new theorems that provide a broad class of partition inequalities and that illustrate a naïve version of Andrews' anti-telescoping technique quite well. These new theorems also put to rest any notion that including parts of size 1 is somehow necessary in order to have a valid irreducible partition inequality. In addition, we prove (as a lemma to one of the theorems) a rather nontrivial class of rational functions of three variables has entirely nonnegative power series coefficients.

Given a $G$-space $X$ and a non-trivial $G$-invariant ideal $I$ of subsets of $X$, we prove that for every partition $X=A_1\cup\dots\cup A_n$ of $X$ into $n\ge 2$ pieces there is a piece $A_i$ of the partition and a finite set $F\subset G$ of cardinality $|F|\le φ(n+1):=\max_{1<x<n+1}\frac{x^{n+1-x}-1}{x-1}$ such that $G=F\cdot Δ(A_i)$ where $Δ(A_i)=\{g\in G:gA_i\cap A_i\notin I\}$ is the difference set of the set $A_i$. Also we investigate the growth of the sequence $φ(n)=\max_{1<x<n}\frac{x^{n-x}-1}{x-1}$ and show that $\ln φ(n)=nW(ne)-2n+\frac{n}{W(ne)}+\frac{W(ne)}{n}+O\big(\frac{\ln n}n\big)$ where $W(x)$ is the Lambert W-function, defined implicitly as $W(x)e^{W(x)}=x$. This shows that $φ(n)$ grows faster that any exponent $a^n$ but slower than the sequence of factorials $n!$.

We give an algebraic description of several modules and algebras related to the vector partition function, and we prove that they can be realized as the equivariant K-theory of some manifolds that have a nice combinatorial description. We also propose a more natural and general notion of duality between these modules, which corresponds to a Poincaré duality-type correspondence for equivariant K-theory.

We give a new interpretation of the chromatic polynomial of a simple graph G in terms of the Kac-Moody Lie algebra with Dynkin diagram G. We show that the chromatic polynomial is essentially the q-Kostant partition function of this Lie algebra evaluated on the sum of the simple roots. Applying the Peterson recurrence formula for root multiplicities, we obtain a new realization of the chromatic polynomial as a weighted sum of paths in the bond lattice of G.

Andrews Style Partition Identities
We propose a method to construct a variety of partition identities at once. The main application is an all-moduli generalization of some of Andrews' results in [5]. The novelty is that the method constructs solutions to functional equations which are satisfied by the generating functions. In contrast, the conventional approach is to show that a variant of well-known series satisfies the system of functional equations, thus reconciling two separate lines of computations.

B. Szegedy [Edge coloring models and reflection positivity, {\sl Journal of the American Mathematical Society} {\bf 20} (2007) 969--988] showed that the number of homomorphisms into a weighted graph is equal to the partition function of a complex edge-coloring model. Using some results in geometric invariant theory, we characterize for which weighted graphs the edge-coloring model can be taken to be real valued that is, we characterize for which weighted graphs the number of homomorphisms into them are edge-reflection positive. In particular, we determine explicitly for which simple graphs the number of homomorphisms into them is equal to the partition function of a real edge-coloring model. This answers a question posed by Szegedy.
On Sylvester Waves and restricted partitions
The higher Sylvester waves are discussed. Techniques used involve finite difference operators. For example, using Herschel's theorem, elegant expressions for Euler's rational functions and the Todd operator are found. Derivative expansions are also rapidly treated by the same method.
A general form for the wave is obtained using multiplicative series, and comments made on its further reduction. As is known, Dedekind sums arise in the case of coprime components and it is pointed out that Brioschi had this result, but not the terminology, very early on. His proof is repeated.
Adding a set of ones to the components of the denumerant corresponds to a succession of (discrete) smoothings and is a Cesaro sum. Using a spectral vocabulary, I take the opportunity to exhibit the finite difference counterparts of some continuous, distributional properties of Riesz typical means.

A Hamilton-Jacobi equation for the continuum limit of non-dominated sorting

We show that non-dominated sorting of a sequence of i.i.d. random variables in Euclidean space has a continuum limit that corresponds to solving a Hamilton-Jacobi equation involving the probability density function of the random variables. Non-dominated sorting is a fundamental problem in multi-objective optimization, and is equivalent to finding the canonical antichain partition and to problems involving the longest chain among Euclidean points. As an application of this result, we show that non-dominated sorting is asymptotically stable under random perturbations in the data. We give a numerical scheme for computing the viscosity solution of this Hamilton-Jacobi equation and present some numerical simulations for various density functions.
Nest graphs and minimal complete symmetry groups for magic Sudoku variants

A symmetry group for Sudoku is complete if its action partitions the set of Sudoku boards into all possible orbits, and minimal if no group of smaller size would do the same. Previously, for a 4 x 4 Sudoku variation known as Shidoku, the authors used an analogous symmetry group to partition the set of Shidoku boards into so-called "nests" and then use the interplay between the physical and relabeling symmetries to find certain subgroups that were both complete and minimal. In this paper these same techniques are applied to find a minimal complete symmetry group for the modular magic Sudoku variation, as well as for another Sudoku variation called semi-magic Sudoku. The paper concludes with a simple computation which leads to the non-obvious fact that the full Sudoku symmetry group is, in fact, already minimal and complete.
