Improved Cheeger's Inequality: Analysis of Spectral Partitioning Algorithms through Higher Order Spectral Gap
Let φ(G) be the minimum conductance of an undirected graph G, and let 0=λ_1 <= λ_2 <=... <= λ_n <= 2 be the eigenvalues of the normalized Laplacian matrix of G. We prove that for any graph G and any k >= 2, φ(G) = O(k) λ_2 / \sqrt{λ_k}, and this performance guarantee is achieved by the spectral partitioning algorithm. This improves Cheeger's inequality, and the bound is optimal up to a constant factor for any k. Our result shows that the spectral partitioning algorithm is a constant factor approximation algorithm for finding a sparse cut if λ_k$ is a constant for some constant k. This provides some theoretical justification to its empirical performance in image segmentation and clustering problems. We extend the analysis to other graph partitioning problems, including multi-way partition, balanced separator, and maximum cut.
Central sets generated by uniformly recurrent words
Published • View PublicationBIB
A subset $A$ of $\nats$ is called an IP-set if $A$ contains all finite sums of distinct terms of some infinite sequence $(x_n)_{n\in \nats} $ of natural numbers. Central sets, first introduced by Furstenberg using notions from topological dynamics, constitute a special class of IP-sets possessing rich combinatorial properties: Each central set contains arbitrarily long arithmetic progressions, and solutions to all partition regular systems of homogeneous linear equations. In this paper we investigate central sets in the framework of combinatorics on words. Using various families of uniformly recurrent words, including Sturmian words, the Thue-Morse word and fixed points of weak mixing substitutions, we generate an assortment of central sets which reflect the rich combinatorial structure of the underlying words. The results in this paper rely on interactions between different areas of mathematics, some of which had not previously been directly linked. They include the general theory of combinatorics on words, abstract numeration systems, and the beautiful theory, developed by Hindman, Strauss and others, linking IP-sets and central sets to the algebraic/topological properties of the Stone-Čech compactification of $\nats .$
On additive properties of sets defined by the Thue-Morse word
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we study some additive properties of subsets of the set $\nats$ of positive integers: A subset $A$ of $\nats$ is called {\it $k$-summable} (where $k\in\ben$) if $A$ contains $\textstyle \big{\sum_{n\in F}x_n | \emp\neq F\subseteq {1,2,...,k\} \big}$ for some $k$-term sequence of natural numbers $x_1<x_2 < ... < x_k$. We say $A \subseteq \nats$ is finite FS-big if $A$ is $k$-summable for each positive integer $k$. We say is $A \subseteq \nats$ is infinite FS-big if for each positive integer $k,$ $A$ contains ${\sum_{n\in F}x_n | \emp\neq F\subseteq \nats and #F\leq k}$ for some infinite sequence of natural numbers $x_1<x_2 < ... $. We say $A\subseteq \nats $ is an IP-set if $A$ contains ${\sum_{n\in F}x_n | \emp\neq F\subseteq \nats and #F<\infty}$ for some infinite sequence of natural numbers $x_1<x_2 < ... $. By the Finite Sums Theorem [5], the collection of all IP-sets is partition regular, i.e., if $A$ is an IP-set then for any finite partition of $A$, one cell of the partition is an IP-set. Here we prove that the collection of all finite FS-big sets is also partition regular. Let $\TM =011010011001011010... $ denote the Thue-Morse word fixed by the morphism $0\mapsto 01$ and $1\mapsto 10$. For each factor $u$ of $\TM$ we consider the set $\TM\big|_u\subseteq \nats$ of all occurrences of $u$ in $\TM$. In this note we characterize the sets $\TM\big|_u$ in terms of the additive properties defined above. Using the Thue-Morse word we show that the collection of all infinite FS-big sets is not partition regular.

Remarks on partition functions of topological string theory on generalized conifolds
Published in RIMS Kokyuroku No. 1913 (2014), 182-201 • Search Publication
The method of topological vertex for topological string theory on toric Calabi-Yau 3-folds is reviewed. Implications of an explicit formula of partition functions in the "on-strip" case, typically the generalized conifolds, are considered. Generating functions of part of the partition functions are shown to be tau functions of the KP hierarchy. The associated Baker-Akhiezer functions play the role of wave functions, and satisfy $q$-difference equations. These $q$-difference equations represent the quantum mirror curves conjectured by Gukov and Sułkowski.

Distinguishing partitions of complete multipartite graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A \textit{distinguishing partition} of a group $X$ with automorphism group ${aut}(X)$ is a partition of $X$ that is fixed by no nontrivial element of ${aut}(X)$. In the event that $X$ is a complete multipartite graph with its automorphism group, the existence of a distinguishing partition is equivalent to the existence of an asymmetric hypergraph with prescribed edge sizes. An asymptotic result is proven on the existence of a distinguishing partition when $X$ is a complete multipartite graph with $m_1$ parts of size $n_1$ and $m_2$ parts of size $n_2$ for small $n_1$, $m_2$ and large $m_1$, $n_2$. A key tool in making the estimate is counting the number of trees of particular classes.

Generating functions from the viewpoint of Rota-Baxter algebras
Published in Discrete Math. 338 (2015) 536-554 • View PublicationBIB
We study generating functions in the context of Rota-Baxter algebras. We show that exponential generating functions can be naturally viewed in a very special case of complete free commutative Rota-Baxter algebras. This allows us to use free Rota-Baxter algebras to give a broad class of algebraic structures in which generalizations of generating functions can be studied. We generalize the product formula and composition formula for exponential power series. We also give generating functions both for known number families such as Stirling numbers of the second kind and partition numbers, and for new number families such as those from not necessarily disjoint partitions and partitions of multisets.

Partition Regularity of Nonlinear Polynomials: a Nonstandard Approach
Published • View PublicationBIB
In 2011, Neil Hindman proved that for every natural number $n,m$ the polynomial \begin{equation*} \sum_{i=1}^{n} x_{i}-\prod\limits_{j=1}^{m} y_{j} \end{equation*} has monochromatic solutions for every finite coloration of $\mathbb{N}$. We want to generalize this result to two classes of nonlinear polynomials. The first class consists of polynomials $P(x_{1},...,x_{n},y_{1},...,y_{m})$ of the following kind: \begin{equation*} P(x_{1},...,x_{n},y_{1},...,y_{m})=\sum_{i=1}^{n}a_{i}x_{i}M_{i}(y_{1},...,y_{m}), \end{equation*} where $n,m$ are natural numbers, $\sum\limits_{i=1}^{n}a_{i}x_{i}$ has monochromatic solutions for every finite coloration of $\mathbb{N}$ and the degree of each variable $y_{1},...,y_{m}$ in $M_{i}(y_{1},...,y_{m})$ is at most one. An example of such a polynomial is \begin{equation*} x_{1}y_{1}+x_{2}y_{1}y_{2}-x_{3}.\end{equation*} The second class of polynomials generalizing Hindman's result is more complicated to describe; its particularity is that the degree of some of the involved variables can be greater than one.\\ The technique that we use relies on an approach to ultrafilters based on Nonstandard Analysis. Perhaps, the most interesting aspect of this technique is that, by carefully chosing the appropriate nonstandard setting, the proof of the main results can be obtained by very simple algebraic considerations.

On Packing Densities of Set Partitions
We study packing densities for set partitions, which is a generalization of packing words. We use results from the literature about packing densities for permutations and words to provide packing densities for set partitions. These results give us most of the packing densities for partitions of the set $\{1,2,3\}$. In the final section we determine the packing density of the set partition $\{\{1,3\},\{2\}\}$.

Regular Bipartite Graphs And Their Properties
We introduce a new notation for representing labeled regular bipartite graphs of arbitrary degree. Several enumeration problems for labeled and unlabeled regular bipartite graphs have been introduced. A general algorithm for enumerating all non-isomorphic 2-regular bipartite graphs for a specified number of vertices has been described and a mathematical proof has been provided for its completeness. An abstraction of m Symmetric Permutation Tree in order to visualize a labeled r-Regular Bipartite Graph with 2m vertices and enumerate its automorphism group has been introduced. An algorithm to generate the partition associated with two compatible permutations has been introduced. The relationship between Automorphism Group and permutation enumeration problem has been used to derive formulae for the number of compatible permutations corresponding to a specified partition.

Partition Parameters for Girth Maximum (m, r) BTUs
This paper describes the calculation of the optimal partition parameters such that the girth maximum (m, r) Balanced Tanner Unit lies in family of BTUs specified by them using a series of proved results and thus creates a framework for specifying a search problem for finding the girth maximum (m, r) BTU. Several open questions for girth maximum (m, r) BTU have been raised.

Semistandard Tableaux for Demazure Characters (Key Polynomials) and Their Atoms
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Schur function indexed by a partition lambda with at most n parts is the sum of the weight monomials for the Young tableaux of shape lambda. Let pi be an n-permutation. We give two descriptions of the tableaux that contribute their monomials to the key polynomial indexed by pi and lambda. (These polynomials are the characters of the Demazure modules for GL(n).) The "atom" indexed by pi is the sum of weight monomials of the tableaux whose right keys are the "key" tableau for pi. Schur functions and key polynomials can be decomposed into sums of atoms. We also describe the tableaux that contribute to an atom, the tableaux that have a left key equal to a given key, and the tableaux that have a left key bounded below by a given key.

Partition regularity in the rationals
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 120 (2013), no. 7, 1590-1599 • View PublicationBIB
A system of homogeneous linear equations with integer coefficients is partition regular if, whenever the natural numbers are finitely coloured, the system has a monochromatic solution. The Finite Sums theorem provided the first example of an infinite partition regular system of equations. Since then, other such systems of equations have been found, but each can be viewed as a modification of the Finite Sums theorem. We present here a new infinite partition regular system of equations that appears to arise in a genuinely different way. This is the first example of a partition regular system in which a variable occurs with unbounded coefficients. A modification of the system provides an example of a system that is partition regular over Q but not N, settling another open problem.

The Andrews-Olsson identity and Bessenrodt insertion algorithm on Young walls
Published • View PublicationBIB
We extend the Andrews-Olsson identity to two-colored partitions. Regarding the sets of proper Young walls of quantum affine algebras $\g_n=A^{(2)}_{2n}$, $A^{(2)}_{2n-1}$, $B^{(1)}_{n}$, $D^{(1)}_{n}$ and $D^{(2)}_{n+1}$ as the sets of two-colored partitions, the extended Andrews-Olsson identity implies that the generating functions of the sets of reduced Young walls have very simple formulae: \begin{center} $\prod^{\infty}_{i=1}(1+t^i)^{κ_i}$ where $κ_i=0$, $1$ or $2$, and $κ_i$ varies periodically. \end{center} Moreover, we generalize the Bessenrodt's algorithms to prove the extended Andrews-Olsson identity in an alternative way. From these algorithms, we can give crystal structures on certain subsets of pair of strict partitions which are isomorphic to the crystal bases $B(Λ)$ of the level $1$ highest weight modules $V(Λ)$ over $U_q(\g_n)$.

Perfect partition of some regular bipartite graphs
A graph has a perfect partition if all its perfect matchings can be partitioned so that each part is a 1-factorization of the graph. Let $L_{rm, r}=K_{rm,rm}-mK_{r,r}$. We first give a formula to count the number of perfect matchings of $L_{rm, r}$, then show that $L_{6,1}$ and $L_{8,2}$ have perfect partitions.

A Canonical Characterization of the Family of Barriers in General Graphs
Given a graph, a barrier is a set of vertices determined by the Berge formula---the min-max theorem characterizing the size of maximum matchings. The notion of barriers plays important roles in numerous contexts of matching theory, since barriers essentially coincides with dual optimal solutions of the maximum matching problem. In a special class of graphs called the elementary graphs, the family of maximal barriers forms a partition of the vertices; this partition was found by Lovász and is called the canonical partition. The canonical partition has produced many fundamental results in matching theory, such as the two ear theorem. However, in non-elementary graphs, the family of maximal barriers never forms a partition, and there has not been the canonical partition for general graphs. In this paper, using our previous work, we give a canonical description of structures of the odd-maximal barriers---a class of barriers including the maximal barriers---for general graphs; we also reveal structures of odd components associated with odd-maximal barriers. This result of us can be regarded as a generalization of Lovász's canonical partition.

Young's lattice and dihedral symmetries revisited: Möbius strips and metric geometry
A cascade of dihedral symmetries is hidden in Young's lattice of integer partitions. In fact, for each integer N>2 the Hasse graph of the subposet consisting of the partitions with maximal hook length strictly less than N has the dihedral group of order 2N as its symmetry group. Here a new interpretation of those Hasse graphs is presented, namely as the 1-skeleta of the injective hulls of certain finite metric spaces.
Optimal Cuts and Partitions in Tree Metrics in Polynomial Time
Published • View PublicationBIB
We present a polynomial time dynamic programming algorithm for optimal partitions in the shortest path metric induced by a tree. This resolves, among other things, the exact complexity status of the optimal partition problems in one dimensional geometric metric settings. Our method of solution could be also of independent interest in other applications. We discuss also an extension of our method to the class of metrics induced by the bounded treewidth graphs.
On the Maximum Number of k-Hooks of Partitions of n
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $α_k(λ)$ denote the number of $k$-hooks in a partition $λ$ and let $b(n,k)$ be the maximum value of $α_k(λ)$ among partitions of $n$. Amdeberhan posed a conjecture on the generating function of $b(n,1)$. We give a proof of this conjecture. In general, we obtain a formula that can be used to determine $b(n,k)$. This leads to a generating function formula for $b(n,k)$. We introduce the notion of nearly $k$-triangular partitions. We show that for any $n$, there is a nearly $k$-triangular partition which can be transformed into a partition of $n$ that attains the maximum number of $k$-hooks. The operations for the transformation enable us to compute the number $b(n,k)$.

Ramsey theory for p-quasicyclic groups with a view towards topological dynamics
We prove additive and multiplicative partition theorems, obtaining combinatorial results for p-quasicyclic groups, where p is a prime number. We also get density results for p-quasicyclic groups via left Følner sequences of non-empty finite subsets of it, giving a sufficient condition in order a subset of a p-quasicyclic group to contain arbitrary long arithmetic progressions. Finally, we introduce the notion of a dynamical system over p-quasicyclic groups extending the classical notion of a topological dynamical system and we prove (multiple) recurrent results for the p-quasicyclic groups. In particular, we prove recurrent results analogous to Furstenberg-Weiss type theorems for classical systems.

h-vectors of matroid complexes
Published • View PublicationBIB
We partition in classes the set of matroids of fixed dimension on a fixed vertex set. In each class we identify two special matroids, respectively with minimal and maximal h-vector in that class. Such extremal matroids also satisfy a long-standing conjecture of Stanley. As a byproduct of this theory we establish Stanley's conjecture in various cases, for example the case of Cohen-Macaulay type less than or equal to 3.
