Involution Schubert polynomials represent cohomology classes of $K$-orbit closures in the complete flag variety, where $K$ is the orthogonal or symplectic group. We show they also represent $T$-equivariant cohomology classes of subvarieties defined by upper-left rank conditions in the spaces of symmetric or skew-symmetric matrices. This geometry implies that these polynomials are positive combinations of monomials in the variables $x_i + x_j$, and we give explicit formulas of this kind as sums over new objects called involution pipe dreams. Our formulas are analogues of the Billey-Jockusch-Stanley formula for Schubert polynomials. In Knutson and Miller's approach to matrix Schubert varieties, pipe dream formulas reflect Gröbner degenerations of the ideals of those varieties, and we conjecturally identify analogous degenerations in our setting.

We give a new proof that three families of polynomials coincide: the double Schubert polynomials of Lascoux and Schützenberger defined by divided difference operators, the pipe dream polynomials of Bergeron and Billey, and the equivariant cohomology classes of matrix Schubert varieties. All three families are shown to satisfy a "co-transition formula" which we explain to be some extent projectively dual to Lascoux' transition formula. We comment on the K-theoretic extensions.

This paper introduces a Hopf algebra structure on a family of reduced pipe dreams. We show that this Hopf algebra is free and cofree, and construct a surjection onto a commutative Hopf algebra of permutations. The pipe dream Hopf algebra contains Hopf subalgebras with interesting sets of generators and Hilbert series related to subsequences of Catalan numbers. Three other relevant Hopf subalgebras include the Loday-Ronco Hopf algebra on complete binary trees, a Hopf algebra related to a special family of lattice walks on the quarter plane, and a Hopf algebra on $ν$-trees related to $ν$-Tamari lattices. One of this Hopf subalgebras motivates a new notion of Hopf chains in the Tamari lattice, which are used to present applications and conjectures in the theory of multivariate diagonal harmonics.
The $ν$-Tamari lattice via $ν$-trees, $ν$-bracket vectors, and subword complexes

We give new interpretations of the $ν$-Tamari lattice of Préville-Ratelle and Viennot. First, we describe it as a rotation lattice of $ν$-trees, which uncovers the relation with known combinatorial objects such as tree-like tableaux and north-east fillings. Then, using a formulation in terms of bracket vectors of $ν$-trees and componentwise order, we provide a simple description of the lattice property. We also show that the $ν$-Tamari lattice is isomorphic to the increasing-flip poset of a suitably chosen subword complex, and settle a special case of Rubey's lattice conjecture concerning the poset of pipe dreams defined by chute moves. Finally, this point of view generalizes to multi $ν$-Tamari complexes, and gives (conjectural) insight on their geometric realizability via polytopal subdivisions of multiassociahedra.

We give a bijective proof of Macdonald's reduced word identity using pipe dreams and Little's bumping algorithm. This proof extends to a principal specialization due to Fomin and Stanley. Such a proof has been sought for over 20 years. Our bijective tools also allow us to solve a problem posed by Fomin and Kirillov from 1997 using work of Wachs, Lenart, Serrano and Stump. These results extend earlier work by the third author on a Markov process for reduced words of the longest permutation.

We introduce two new bases for polynomials that lift monomial and fundamental quasisymmetric functions to the full polynomial ring. By defining a new condition on pipe dreams, called quasi-Yamanouchi, we give a positive combinatorial rule for expanding Schubert polynomials into these new bases that parallels the expansion of Schur functions into fundamental quasisymmetric functions. As a result, we obtain a refinement of the stable limits of Schubert polynomials to Stanley symmetric functions. We also give combinatorial rules for the positive structure constants of these bases that generalize the quasi-shuffle product and shuffle product, respectively. We use this to give a Littlewood--Richardson rule for expanding a product of Schubert polynomials into fundamental slide polynomials and to give formulas for products of Stanley symmetric functions in terms of Schubert structure constants.
On Double Schubert and Grothendieck polynomials for Classical Groups
We give an algebra-combinatorial constructions of (noncommutative) generating functions of double Schubert and double $β$-Grothendieck polynomials corresponding to the full flag varieties associated to the Lie groups of classical types $A,B, C$ and $D$. Our approach is based on the decomposition of certain `` transfer matrices `` corresponding to the exponential solution to the quantum Yang--Baxter equations associated with either NiCoxeter or IdCoxeter algebras of classical types.
The "triple"~$β$-Grothendieck polynomials ${\mathfrak{G}}_{w}^{W}(X,Y,Z)$ we have introduced, satisfy, among other things, the coherency and (generalized) vanishing conditions. Their generating function has a nice factorization in the algebra $Id_βCoxeter(W)$, and as a consequence, the polynomials ${\mathfrak{G}}_{w}^{W}(X,Y,Z)$ admit a combinatorial description in terms of $W$-type pipe dreams.
Pipe dream complexes and triangulations of root polytopes belong together
In this paper we show that the pipe dream complex associated to the permutation 1n(n-1)...2 can be geometrically realized as a triangulation of the vertex figure of a root polytope. Leading up to this result we show that the Grothendieck polynomial specializes to the h-polynomial of the corresponding pipe dream complex, which in certain cases equals the h-polynomial of canonical triangulations of root (and flow) polytopes, which in turn equals a specialization of the reduced form of a monomial in the subdivision algebra of root (and flow) polytopes. Thus, we connect Grothendieck polynomials to reduced forms in subdivision algebras and root (and flow) polytopes. We also show that root polytopes can be seen as projections of flow polytopes, explaining that these families of polytopes possess the same subdivision algebra.
Affine Patches on Positroid Varieties and Affine Pipe Dreams (Thesis)
The objects of interest in this thesis are positroid varieties in the Grassmannian, which are indexed by juggling patterns. In particular, we study affine patches on these positroid varieties. Our main result corresponds these affine patches to Kazhdan-Lusztig varieties in the affine Grassmannian. We develop a new term order and study how these spaces are related to subword complexes and Stanley-Reisner ideals. We define an extension of pipe dreams to the affine case and conclude by showing how our affine pipe dreams are generalizations of Cauchon and Le diagrams.
Maximal fillings of moon polyominoes, simplicial complexes, and Schubert polynomials

We exhibit a canonical connection between maximal (0,1)-fillings of a moon polyomino avoiding north-east chains of a given length and reduced pipe dreams of a certain permutation. Following this approach we show that the simplicial complex of such maximal fillings is a vertex-decomposable, and thus shellable, sphere. In particular, this implies a positivity result for Schubert polynomials. For Ferrers shapes, we moreover construct a bijection to maximal fillings avoiding south-east chains of the same length which specializes to a bijection between k-triangulations of the n-gon and k-fans of Dyck paths of length 2(n-2k). Using this, we translate a conjectured cyclic sieving phenomenon for k-triangulations with rotation to the language of k-flagged tableaux with promotion.
Maximal 0-1 fillings of moon polyominoes with restricted chain-lengths and rc-graphs

We show that maximal 0-1-fillings of moon polynomials with restricted chain lengths can be identified with certain rc-graphs, also known as pipe dreams. In particular, this exhibits a connection between maximal 0-1-fillings of Ferrers shapes and Schubert polynomials. Moreover, it entails a bijective proof showing that the number of maximal fillings of a stack polyomino S with no north-east chains longer than k depends only on k and the multiset of column heights of S. Our main contribution is a slightly stronger theorem, which in turn leads us to conjecture that the poset of rc-graphs with covering relation given by generalised chute moves is in fact a lattice.
A Gröbner basis for Kazhdan-Lusztig ideals

Kazhdan-Lusztig ideals, a family of generalized determinantal ideals investigated in [Woo-Yong '08], provide an explicit choice of coordinates and equations encoding a neighbourhood of a torus-fixed point of a Schubert variety on a type A flag variety. Our main result is a Grobner basis for these ideals. This provides a single geometric setting to transparently explain the naturality of pipe dreams on the Rothe diagram of a permutation, and their appearance in:
* combinatorial formulas [Fomin-Kirillov '94] for Schubert and Grothendieck polynomials of [Lascoux-Schutzenberger '82];
* the equivariant K-theory specialization formula of [Buch-Rimanyi '04]; and
* a positive combinatorial formula for multiplicities of Schubert varieties in good cases, including those for which the associated Kazhdan-Lusztig ideal is homogeneous under the standard grading.
Our results generalize (with alternate proofs) [Knutson-Miller '05]'s Grobner basis theorem for Schubert determinantal ideals and their geometric interpretation of the monomial positivity of Schubert polynomials. We also complement recent work of [Knutson '08,'09] on degenerations of Kazhdan-Lusztig varieties in general Lie type, as well as work of [Goldin '01] on equivariant localization and of [Lakshmibai-Weyman '90], [Rosenthal-Zelevinsky '01], and [Krattenthaler '01] on Grassmannian multiplicity formulas.
Duality of antidiagonals and pipe dreams

Weighted enumeration of reduced pipe dreams (or rc-graphs) results in a combinatorial expression for Schubert polynomials. The duality between the set of reduced pipe dreams and certain antidiagonals has important geometric implications [A. Knutson and E. Miller, Gröbner geometry of Schubert polynomials, Ann. Math. 161, 1245-1318]. The original proof of the duality was roundabout, relying on the algebra of certain monomial ideals and a recursive characterization of reduced pipe dreams. This paper provides a direct combinatorial proof.
Gröbner geometry of vertex decompositions and of flagged tableaux

We relate a classic algebro-geometric degeneration technique, dating at least to [Hodge 1941], to the notion of vertex decompositions of simplicial complexes. The good case is when the degeneration is reduced, and we call this a "geometric vertex decomposition".
Our main example in this paper is the family of vexillary matrix Schubert varieties, whose ideals are also known as (one-sided) ladder determinantal ideals. Using a diagonal term order to specify the (Gröbner) degeneration, we show that these have geometric vertex decompositions into simpler varieties of the same type. From this, together with the combinatorics of the pipe dreams of [Fomin--Kirillov 1996], we derive a new formula for the numerators of their multigraded Hilbert series, the double Grothendieck polynomials, in terms of "flagged set-valued tableaux". This unifies work of [Wachs 1985] on flagged tableaux, and [Buch 2002] on set-valued tableaux, giving geometric meaning to both.
This work focuses on diagonal term orders, giving results complementary to those of [Knutson--Miller 2004], where it was shown that the generating minors form a Gröbner basis for any antidiagonal term order and any matrix Schubert variety. We show here that under a diagonal term order, the only matrix Schubert varieties for which these minors form Gröbner bases are the vexillary ones, reaching an end toward which the ladder determinantal literature had been building.
Four positive formulae for type A quiver polynomials

We give four positive formulae for the (equioriented type A) quiver polynomials of Buch and Fulton. All four formulae are combinatorial, in the sense that they are expressed in terms of combinatorial objects of certain types: Zelevinsky permutations, lacing diagrams, Young tableaux, and pipe dreams (also known as rc-graphs). Three of our formulae are multiplicity-free and geometric, meaning that their summands have coefficient 1, and correspond bijectively to components of a torus-invariant scheme. The remaining (presently non-geometric) formula was conjectured for by Buch and Fulton in terms of factor sequences of Young tableaux; our proof of it proceeds by way of a new characterization of the tableaux counted by quiver constants. All four formulae come naturally in ``doubled'' versions, two for `double quiver polynomials', and the other two for their stable versions, the `double quiver functions', where setting half the variables equal to the other half specializes to the ordinary case.
Mitosis recursion for coefficients of Schubert polynomials

Mitosis is a rule introduced by [Knutson-Miller, 2002] for manipulating subsets of the n by n grid. It provides an algorithm that lists the reduced pipe dreams (also known as rc-graphs) [Fomin-Kirillov, Bergeron-Billey] for a permutation w in S_n by downward induction on weak Bruhat order, thereby generating the coefficients of Schubert polynomials [Lascoux-Schutzenberger] inductively. This note provides a short and purely combinatorial proof of these properties of mitosis.
