Changing Bases with Pipe Dream Combinatorics
Lascoux and Schützenberger introduced Schubert and Grothendieck polynomials to study the cohomology and K-theory of the complete flag variety. We present explicit combinatorial rules for expressing Grothendieck polynomials in the basis of Schubert polynomials, and vice versa, using the bumpless pipe dreams (BPDs) of Lam, Lee, and Shimozono. A key advantage of BPDs is that they are naturally back stable, which allows us to give a combinatorial formula for expanding back stable Grothendieck polynomials in terms of back stable Schubert polynomials. We also provide pipe dream interpretations for the rules originally given by Lenart (Grothendieck to Schubert) and Lascoux (Schubert to Grothendieck), which were previously formulated in terms of binary triangular arrays. We give new proofs of these results, relying on Knutson's co-transition recurrences. As a consequence, we obtain a formula for expanding Grothendieck polynomials into Schubert polynomials using chains in Bruhat order. The key connection between the pipe dream and BPD change of basis formulas is the canonical bijection of Gao and Huang. We show that co-permutations are preserved by this map.
Permutons from Demazure Products
We construct and analyze several new families of permutons arising from random processes involving the Demazure product on the symmetric group. First, we consider Demazure products associated to random pipe dreams, generalizing the Grothendieck permutons introduced by Morales, Panova, Petrov, and Yeliussizov by replacing staircase shapes with arbitrary order-convex shapes. Using the totally asymmetric simple exclusion process (TASEP) with geometric jumps, we prove precise scaling limit and fluctuation results for the associated height functions, showing that these models belong to the Kardar--Parisi--Zhang (KPZ) universality class. We then consider permutons obtained by applying deterministic sequences of bubble-sort operators to random initial permutations. We again provide precise descriptions of the limiting permutons. In a special case, we deduce the exact forms of the standard bubble-sort permutons, the supports of which were computed by DiFranco.
A crucial tool in our analysis is a formulation, due to Chan and Pflueger, of the Demazure product as matrix multiplication in the min-plus tropical semiring. This allows us to define a Demazure product on the set of permutons. We discuss further applications of this product. For instance, we show that the number of inversions of the Demazure product of two independent uniformly random permutations of size $n$ is $\binom{n}{2}(1-o(1))$.

The open projected Richardson varieties form a stratification for the partial flag variety $G/P$. We compare the Segre--MacPherson classes of open projected Richardson varieties with those of the corresponding affine Schubert cells by pushing or pulling these classes to the affine Grassmannian. In the case of the Grassmannian $G/P=\operatorname{Gr}_k(\mathbb{C}^n)$, the open projected Richardson varieties are known as open positroid varieties. We obtain symmetric functions that represent the Segre--MacPherson classes of these open positroid varieties, constructed explicitly in terms of pipe dreams for affine permutations.
Generic pipe dreams, lower-upper varieties, and Schwartz-MacPherson classes
We recall the lower-upper varieties from [Knutson '05] and give a formula for their equivariant cohomology classes, as a sum over generic pipe dreams. We recover as limits the classic and bumpless pipe dream formulae for double Schubert polynomials. As a byproduct, we obtain a formula for the degree of the $n$th commuting variety as a sum of powers of 2. Generic pipe dreams also appear in the Segre-Schwarz-MacPherson analogue of the AJS/Billey formula, and when computing the Chern-Schwarz-MacPherson class of the orbit $B_- w B_+ \subseteq Mat_{k\times n}$ or of a double Bruhat cell $B_-u B_+ \cap B_+ v B_-$.
Generating Series of Key Polynomials and Bounded Ascending Sequences of Integers
The fact that Schubert polynomials are the weighted counting functions for reduced RC-graphs, also known as reduced pipe dreams, was established using their generating functions inside an appropriate Demazure algebra. Here we investigate the generating functions of another family of polynomials, the key polynomials, also known as Demazure characters. Each component in that function is a rational function, whose denominator is an explicit product whose definition is based on bounded ascending sequences of integers. We determine the first terms of the polynomial numerator, and pose conjectures about these terms in general as well as some of the next ones. The form of our generating functions suggests relations between the coefficients in key polynomials and signed sums of numbers of integral points on polytopes.

We develop a family of new combinatorial models for key polynomials. It is similar to the hybrid pipe dream model for Schubert polynomials defined recently by Knutson and Udell.
Random Subwords and Pipe Dreams
Fix a probability $p\in(0,1)$. Let $s_i$ denote the transposition in the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$ that swaps $i$ and $i+1$. Given a word $\mathsf{w}$ over the alphabet $\{s_1,\ldots,s_{n-1}\}$, we can generate a random subword by independently deleting each letter of $\mathsf{w}$ with probability $1-p$. For a large class of starting words $\mathsf{w}$ -- including all alternating reduced words for the decreasing permutation -- we compute precise asymptotics (as $n\to\infty$) for the expected number of inversions of the permutation represented by the random subword. This result can also be seen as an asymptotic formula for the expected number of inversions of a permutation represented by a certain random (non-reduced) pipe dream. In the special case when $\mathsf{w}$ is the word $(s_{n-1})(s_{n-2}s_{n-1})\cdots(s_1s_2\cdots s_{n-1})$, we find that the expected number of inversions of the permutation represented by the random subword is asymptotically equal to \[\frac{2\sqrt{2}}{3\sqrtπ}\sqrt{\frac{p}{1-p}}\,n^{3/2};\] this settles a conjecture of Morales, Panova, Petrov, and Yeliussizov.
Grothendieck Shenanigans: Permutons from pipe dreams via integrable probability
We study random permutations arising from reduced pipe dreams. Our main model is motivated by Grothendieck polynomials with parameter $β=1$ arising in K-theory of the flag variety. The probability weight of a permutation is proportional to the principal specialization (setting all variables to 1) of the corresponding Grothendieck polynomial. By mapping this random permutation to a version of TASEP (Totally Asymmetric Simple Exclusion Process), we describe the limiting permuton and fluctuations around it as the order $n$ of the permutation grows to infinity. The fluctuations are of order $n^{\frac13}$ and have the Tracy-Widom GUE distribution, which places this algebraic (K-theoretic) model into the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang universality class.
We also investigate non-reduced pipe dreams and make progress on a recent open problem on the asymptotic number of inversions of the resulting permutation. Inspired by Stanley's question for the maximal value of principal specializations of Schubert polynomials, we resolve the analogous question for $β=1$ Grothendieck polynomials, and provide bounds for general $β$.

We give an elementary approach utilizing only the divided difference formalism for obtaining expansions of Schubert polynomials that are manifestly nonnegative, by studying solutions to the equation $\sum Y_i\partial_i=\mathrm{id}$ on polynomials with no constant term. This in particular recovers the pipe dream and slide polynomial expansions. We also show that slide polynomials satisfy an analogue of the divided difference formalisms for Schubert polynomials and forest polynomials, which gives a simple method for extracting the coefficients of slide polynomials in the slide polynomial decomposition of an arbitrary polynomial.

Schubert polynomials are polynomial representatives of Schubert classes in the cohomology of the complete flag variety and have a combinatorial formulation in terms of bumpless pipe dreams. Quantum double Schubert polynomials are polynomial representatives of Schubert classes in the torus-equivariant quantum cohomology of the complete flag variety, but no analogous combinatorial formulation had been discovered. We introduce a generalization of the bumpless pipe dreams called quantum bumpless pipe dreams, giving a novel combinatorial formula for quantum double Schubert polynomials as a sum of binomial weights of quantum bumpless pipe dreams. We give a bijective proof for this formula by showing that the sum of binomial weights satisfies a defining transition equation.
Poset polytopes and pipe dreams: toric degenerations and beyond
We demonstrate how pipe dreams can be applied to the theory of poset polytopes to produce toric degenerations of flag varieties. Specifically, we present such constructions for marked chain-order polytopes of Dynkin types A and C. These toric degenerations also give rise to further algebraic and geometric objects such as PBW-monomial bases and Newton--Okounkov bodies. We discuss a construction of the former in the type A case and of the latter in type C.

Schubert polynomials represent a basis for the cohomology of the complete flag variety and thus play a central role in geometry and combinatorics. In this context, Schubert polynomials are generating functions over various combinatorial objects, such as rc-graphs or reduced pipe dreams. By restricting Bergeron and Billey's chute moves on rc-graphs, we define a Demazure crystal structure on the monomials of a Schubert polynomial. As a consequence, we provide a method for decomposing Schubert polynomials as sums of key polynomials, complementing related work of Assaf and Schilling via reduced factorizations with cutoff, as well as Lenart's coplactic operators on biwords.
Poset polytopes and pipe dreams: types C and B
The first part of this paper concerns type C. We present new explicitly defined families of algebro-combinatorial structures of three kinds: combinatorial bases in representations, Newton--Okounkov bodies of flag varieties and toric degenerations of flag varieties. All three families are parametrized by the same family of polytopes: the marked chain-order polytopes of Fang and Fourier which interpolate between the type C Gelfand--Tsetlin and FFLV polytopes. Thus, in each case the obtained structures interpolate between the well-known bases, Newton--Okounkov bodies or degenerations associated with the latter two polytopes. We then obtain similar results for type B after introducing a new family of poset polytopes to be considered in place of marked chain-order polytopes. In both types our constructions and proofs rely crucially on a combinatorial connection between poset polytopes and pipe dreams.

We give a Molev-Sagan type formula for computing the product $\mathfrak{S}_u(x;y)\mathfrak{S}_v(x;z)$ of two double Schubert polynomials in different sets of coefficient variables where the descents of $u$ and $v$ satisfy certain conditions that encompass Molev and Sagan's original case and conjecture positivity in the general case. Additionally, we provide a Pieri formula for multiplying an arbitrary double Schubert polynomial $\mathfrak{S}_u(x;y)$ by a factorial elementary symmetric polynomial $E_{p,k}(x;z)$. Both formulas remain positive in terms of the negative roots when we set $y=z$, so in particular this gives a new equivariant Littlewood-Richardson rule for the Grassmannian, and more generally a positive formula for multiplying a factorial Schur polynomial $s_λ(x_1,\ldots,x_m;y)$ by a double Schubert polynomial $\mathfrak{S}_v(x_1,\ldots,x_p;y)$ such that $m\geq p$. An additional new result we present is a combinatorial proof of a conjecture of Kirillov of nonnegativity of the coefficients of skew Schubert polynomials, and we conjecture a weight-preserving bijection between a modification of certain diagrams used in our formulas and RC-graphs/pipe dreams arising in formulas for double Schubert polynomials.
Growth Diagrams for Schubert RSK
Motivated by classical combinatorial Schubert calculus on the Grassmannian, Huang--Pylyavskyy introduced a generalized theory of Robinson-Schensted-Knuth (RSK) correspondence for studying Schubert calculus on the complete flag variety via insertion algorithms. The inputs of the correspondence are certain biwords, the insertion objects are bumpless pipe dreams, and the recording objects are certain chains in Bruhat order. In particular, they defined plactic biwords and showed that classical Knuth relations can be generalized to plactic biwords. In this paper, we give an analogue of Fomin's growth diagrams for this generalized RSK correspondence on plactic biwords. We show that this growth diagram recovers the bijection between pipe dreams and bumpless pipe dreams of Gao--Huang.
Lattices properties of acyclic alternating pipe dreams
This paper proves some conjectures raised by N. Bergeron, N. Cartier, C. Ceballos, and V. Pilaud about acyclic facets of subword complexes of type A Coxeter groups. We use a representation of subword complex facets extending the pipe dreams defined N. Bergeron and S. Billey and prove that the strongly acyclic facets realize a lattice quotient of a weak order interval. We also give a sufficient condition so that all acyclic facets are strongly acyclic.

Knutson and Zinn-Justin recently found a puzzle rule for the expansion of the product $\mathfrak{G}_{u}(x,t)\cdot \mathfrak{G}_{v}(x,t)$ of two double Grothendieck polynomials indexed by permutations with separated descents. We establish its triple Schubert calculus version in the sense of Knutson and Tao, namely, a formula for expanding $\mathfrak{G}_{u}(x,y)\cdot \mathfrak{G}_{v}(x,t)$ in different secondary variables. Our rule is formulated in terms of pipe puzzles, incorporating both the structures of bumpless pipe dreams and classical puzzles. As direct applications, we recover the separated-descent puzzle formula by Knutson and Zinn-Justin (by setting $y=t$) and the bumpless pipe dream model of double Grothendieck polynomials by Weigandt (by setting $v=\operatorname{id}$ and $x=t$). Moreover, we utilize the formula to partially confirm a positivity conjecture of Kirillov about applying a skew operator to a Schubert polynomial.
Combinatorics of semi-toric degenerations of Schubert varieties in type C
An approach to Schubert calculus is to realize Schubert classes as concrete combinatorial objects such as Schubert polynomials. Using the polytope ring of the Gelfand-Tsetlin polytopes, Kiritchenko-Smirnov-Timorin realized each Schubert class as a sum of reduced Kogan faces. The first named author introduced a generalization of reduced Kogan faces to symplectic Gelfand-Tsetlin polytopes using a semi-toric degeneration of a Schubert variety, and extended the result of Kiritchenko-Smirnov-Timorin to type C case. In this paper, we introduce a combinatorial model to this type C generalization using a kind of pipe dream with self-crossings. As an application, we prove that the type C generalization can be constructed by skew mitosis operators.
Knuth moves for Schubert polynomials
In our previous work we have introduced an analogue of Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence for Schubert calculus of the complete flag varieties. The objects inserted are certain biwords, the outcomes of insertion are bumpless pipe dreams, and the recording objects are decorated chains in Bruhat order. In this paper we study a class of biwords that have a certain associativity property; we call them plactic biwords. We introduce analogues of Knuth moves on plactic biwords, and prove that any two plactic biwords with the same insertion bumpless pipe dream are connected by those moves.

We show that for any permutation $ω$, the increasing flip graph on acyclic pipe dreams with exiting permutation $ω$ is a lattice quotient of the interval $[e,ω]$ of the weak order. We then discuss conjectural generalizations of this result to acyclic facets of subword complexes on arbitrary finite Coxeter groups.
