Honeycomb Tessellations and Graded Permutohedral Blades
This paper investigates enumerative aspects of permutohedral blades, which provide a generalization of the notion of the tropical hyperplane arrangement. Blade provide the combinatorial underpinning of generalized biadjoint scalar scattering amplitudes in work of Cachazo, Early, Guevara and Mizera (CEGM). We construct a graded basis for a vector space of indicator functions of blades, with the grading determined by the dimension of the support of the function. We prove a Minkowski sum decomposition law into lines and tripods and we explore connections to the cohomology ring of certain moduli spaces and a non-planar analog of the square move for plabic graphs. We give a closed formula for the graded dimension of the basis. It is shown in an Appendix by Donghyun Kim that the coefficients appearing in the numerator of the generating function for the graded dimension are symmetric, and that they sum to $\frac{(2j)!}{j!}$. Unimodality is still open.

Triangulations and soliton graphs for totally positive Grassmannian
Published • View PublicationBIB
The KP equation is a nonlinear dispersive wave equation which provides an excellent model for resonant interactions of shallow-water waves. It is well known that regular soliton solutions of the KP equation may be constructed from points in the totally nonnegative Grassmannian Gr$(N,M)_{\geq 0}$. Kodama and Williams studied the asymptotic patterns (tropical limit) of KP solitons, called soliton graphs, and showed that they correspond to Postnikov's Le-diagrams. In this paper, we consider soliton graphs for the KP hierarchy, a family of commuting flows which are compatible with the KP equation. For the positive Grassmannian Gr$(2,M)_{>0}$, Kodama and Williams showed that soliton graphs are in bijection with triangulations of the $M$-gon. We extend this result to Gr$(N,M)_{>0}$ when $N=3$ and $M=6,7$ and $8$. In each case, we show that soliton graphs are in bijection with Postnikov's plabic graphs, which generalize Le-diagrams.

Positive Grassmannian and polyhedral subdivisions
Published • View PublicationBIB
The nonnegative Grassmannian is a cell complex with rich geometric, algebraic, and combinatorial structures. Its study involves interesting combinatorial objects, such as positroids and plabic graphs. Remarkably, the same combinatorial structures appeared in many other areas of mathematics and physics, e.g., in the study of cluster algebras, scattering amplitudes, and solitons. We discuss new ways to think about these structures. In particular, we identify plabic graphs and more general Grassmannian graphs with polyhedral subdivisions induced by 2-dimensional projections of hypersimplices. This implies a close relationship between the positive Grassmannian and the theory of fiber polytopes and the generalized Baues problem. This suggests natural extensions of objects related to the positive Grassmannian.

For Grassmann varieties, we explain how the duality between the Gelfand-Tsetlin polytopes and the Feigin-Fourier-Littelmann-Vinberg polytopes arises from different positive structures.

Plabic R-matrices
Published • View PublicationBIB
Postnikov's plabic graphs in a disk are used to parametrize totally positive Grassmannians. In recent years plabic graphs have found numerous applications in math and physics. One of the key features of the theory is the fact that if a plabic graph is reduced, the face weights can be uniquely recovered from boundary measurements. On surfaces more complicated than a disk this property is lost. In this paper we undertake a comprehensive study of a certain semi-local transformation of weights for plabic networks on a cylinder that preserve boundary measurements. We call this a plabic R-matrix. We show that plabic R-matrices have underlying cluster algebra structure, generalizing recent work of Inoue-Lam-Pylyavskyy. Special cases of transformations we consider include geometric R-matrices appearing in Berenstein-Kazhdan theory of geometric crystals, and also certain transformations appearing in a recent work of Goncharov-Shen.

Newton-Okounkov bodies, cluster duality, and mirror symmetry for Grassmannians
Published in Duke Math. J. 168, no. 18 (2019), 3437-3527 • View PublicationBIB
We use cluster structures and mirror symmetry to explicitly describe a natural class of Newton-Okounkov bodies for Grassmannians. We consider the Grassmannian $X=Gr_{n-k}(\mathbb C^n)$, as well as the mirror dual Landau-Ginzburg model $(\check{X}^\circ, W_q:\check{X}^\circ \to \mathbb C)$, where $\check{X}^\circ$ is the complement of a particular anti-canonical divisor in a Langlands dual Grassmannian $\check{X} = Gr_k((\mathbb C^n)^*)$, and the superpotential W_q has a simple expression in terms of Plücker coordinates. Grassmannians simultaneously have the structure of an $\mathcal{A}$-cluster variety and an $\mathcal{X}$-cluster variety. Given a cluster seed G, we consider two associated coordinate systems: a $\mathcal X$-cluster chart $Φ_G:(\mathbb C^*)^{k(n-k)}\to X^{\circ}$ and a $\mathcal A$-cluster chart $Φ_G^{\vee}:(\mathbb C^*)^{k(n-k)}\to \check{X}^\circ$. To each $\mathcal X$-cluster chart $Φ_G$ and ample `boundary divisor' $D$ in $X\setminus X^{\circ}$, we associate a Newton-Okounkov body $Δ_G(D)$ in $\mathbb R^{k(n-k)}$, which is defined as the convex hull of rational points. On the other hand using the $\mathcal A$-cluster chart $Φ_G^{\vee}$ on the mirror side, we obtain a set of rational polytopes, described by inequalities, by writing the superpotential $W_q$ in the $\mathcal A$-cluster coordinates, and then "tropicalising". Our main result is that the Newton-Okounkov bodies $Δ_G(D)$ and the polytopes obtained by tropicalisation coincide. As an application, we construct degenerations of the Grassmannian to toric varieties corresponding to these Newton-Okounkov bodies. Additionally, when $G$ corresponds to a plabic graph, we give a formula for the lattice points of the Newton-Okounkov bodies, which has an interpretation in terms of quantum Schubert calculus.

Positroids Induced by Rational Dyck Paths
A rational Dyck path of type $(m,d)$ is an increasing unit-step lattice path from $(0,0)$ to $(m,d) \in \mathbb{Z}^2$ that never goes above the diagonal line $y = (d/m)x$. On the other hand, a positroid of rank $d$ on the ground set $[d+m]$ is a special type of matroid coming from the totally nonnegative Grassmannian. In this paper we describe how to naturally assign a rank $d$ positroid on the ground set $[d+m]$, which we name rational Dyck positroid, to each rational Dyck path of type $(m,d)$. We show that such an assignment is one-to-one. There are several families of combinatorial objects in one-to-one correspondence with the set of positroids. Here we characterize some of these families for the positroids we produce, namely Grassmann necklaces, decorated permutations, Le-diagrams, and move-equivalence classes of plabic graphs. Finally, we describe the matroid polytope of a given rational Dyck positroid.
Toric degenerations of Gr(2,n) and Gr(3,6) via plabic graphs

We establish an explicit bijection between the toric degenerations of the Grassmannian $\textrm{Gr}(2,n)$ arising from maximal cones in tropical Grassmannians and the ones coming from plabic graphs corresponding to $\textrm{Gr}(2,n)$. We show that a similar statement does not hold for $\textrm{Gr}(3,6)$.

Plabic graphs and zonotopal tilings
Published in Proc. Lond. Math. Soc., 117: 661-681, 2018 • View PublicationBIB
We say that two sets $S,T\subset\{1,2,\dots,n\}$ are chord separated if there does not exist a cyclically ordered quadruple $a,b,c,d$ of integers satisfying $a,c\in S-T$ and $b,d\in T-S$. This is a weaker version of Leclerc and Zelevinsky's weak separation. We show that every maximal by inclusion collection of pairwise chord separated sets is also maximal by size. Moreover, we prove that such collections are precisely vertex label collections of fine zonotopal tilings of the three-dimensional cyclic zonotope. In our construction, plabic graphs and square moves appear naturally as horizontal sections of zonotopal tilings and their mutations respectively.

Green-to-Red Sequences for Positroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
Le-diagrams are combinatorial objects that parametrize cells of the totally nonnegative Grassmannian, called positroid cells, and each Le-diagram gives rise to a cluster algebra which is believed to be isomorphic to the coordinate ring of the corresponding positroid variety. We study quivers arising from these diagrams and show that they can be constructed from the well-behaved quivers associated to Grassmannians by deleting and merging certain vertices. Then, we prove that quivers coming from arbitrary Le-diagrams, and more generally reduced plabic graphs, admit a particular sequence of mutations called a green-to-red sequence.

Combinatorics of symmetric plabic graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A plabic graph is a planar bicolored graph embedded in a disk, which satisfies some combinatorial conditions. Postnikov's boundary measurement map takes the space of positive edge weights of a plabic graph $G$ to a positroid cell in some totally nonnegative Grassmannian. In this note, we investigate plabic graphs which are symmetric about a line of reflection, up to reversing the colors of vertices. These symmetric plabic graphs arise naturally in the study of total positivity for the Lagrangian Grassmannian. We characterize various combinatorial objects associated with symmetric plabic graphs, and describe the subset of a Grassmannian which can be realized by symmetric weightings of symmetric plabic graphs.

Cluster duality and mirror symmetry for Grassmannians
In this article we use the cluster structure on the Grassmannian and the combinatorics of plabic graphs to exhibit a new aspect of mirror symmetry for Grassmannians in terms of polytopes. For our $A$-model, we consider the Grassmannian $\mathbb X=Gr_{n-k}(\mathbb{C}^n)$. The $B$-model is a Landau-Ginzburg model $(\check{\mathbb X}^\circ, W_q:\check{\mathbb X}^\circ \to \mathbb{C})$, where $\check{\mathbb X}^\circ$ is the complement of a particular anti-canonical divisor in a Langlands dual Grassmannian $\check{\mathbb X} = Gr_k((\mathbb{C}^n)^*)$, and the superpotential $W_q$ has a simple expression in terms of Plücker coordinates, see [MarshRietsch]. From a given plabic graph $G$ we obtain two coordinate systems: using work of Postnikov and Talaska we have a positive chart $Φ_G:(\mathbb{C}^*)^{k(n-k)}\to \mathbb X$ in our $A$-model, and using work of Scott we have a cluster chart $Φ_G^{\vee}:(\mathbb{C}^*)^{k(n-k)}\to \check{\mathbb X}$ in our $B$-model. To each positive chart $Φ_G$ and choice of positive integer $r$, we associate a polytope $NO_G^r$, which we construct as the convex hull of a set of integer lattice points. This polytope is an example of a Newton-Okounkov polytope associated to the line bundle $\mathcal O(r)$ on $\mathbb X$. On the other hand, using the cluster chart $Φ_G^{\vee}$ and the same positive integer $r$, we obtain a polytope $Q_G^r$ -- described in terms of inequalities -- by "tropicalizing" the composition $W_{t^r}\circ Φ_G^{\vee}$. Our main result is that the polytopes $NO_G^r$ and $Q_G^r$ coincide.

Arrangements of equal minors in the positive Grassmannian
Published • View PublicationBIB
We discuss arrangements of equal minors of totally positive matrices. More precisely, we investigate the structure of equalities and inequalities between the minors. We show that arrangements of equal minors of largest value are in bijection with sorted sets, which earlier appeared in the context of alcoved polytopes and Gröbner bases. Maximal arrangements of this form correspond to simplices of the alcoved triangulation of the hypersimplex; and the number of such arrangements equals the Eulerian number. On the other hand, we prove in many cases that arrangements of equal minors of smallest value are exactly weakly separated sets. Weakly separated sets, originally introduced by Leclerc and Zelevinsky, are closely related to the positive Grassmannian and the associated cluster algebra. However, we also construct examples of arrangements of smallest minors which are not weakly separated using chain reactions of mutations of plabic graphs.

A positive Grassmannian analogue of the permutohedron
Published • View PublicationBIB
The classical permutohedron Perm is the convex hull of the points (w(1),...,w(n)) in R^n where w ranges over all permutations in the symmetric group. This polytope has many beautiful properties -- for example it provides a way to visualize the weak Bruhat order: if we orient the permutohedron so that the longest permutation w_0 is at the "top" and the identity e is at the "bottom," then the one-skeleton of Perm is the Hasse diagram of the weak Bruhat order. Equivalently, the paths from e to w_0 along the edges of Perm are in bijection with the reduced decompositions of w_0. Moreover, the two-dimensional faces of the permutohedron correspond to braid and commuting moves, which by the Tits Lemma, connect any two reduced expressions of w_0. In this note we introduce some polytopes Br(k,n) (which we call bridge polytopes) which provide a positive Grassmannian analogue of the permutohedron. In this setting, BCFW bridge decompositions of reduced plabic graphs play the role of reduced decompositions. We define Br(k,n) and explain how paths along its edges encode BCFW bridge decompositions of the longest element pi(k,n) in the circular Bruhat order. We also show that two-dimensional faces of Br(k,n) correspond to certain local moves for plabic graphs, which by a result of Postnikov [Pos06], connect any two reduced plabic graphs associated to pi(k,n). All of these results can be generalized to the positive parts of Schubert cells. A useful tool in our proofs is the fact that our polytopes are isomorphic to certain Bruhat interval polytopes. Conversely, our results on bridge polytopes allow us to deduce some corollaries about the structure of Bruhat interval polytopes.

Cluster Algebras and the Positive Grassmannian
Published • View PublicationBIB
Plabic graphs are intimately connected to the positroid stratification of the positive Grassmannian. The duals to these graphs are quivers, and it is possible to associate to them cluster algebras. For the top-cell graph of $Gr_{+}(k,n)$, this cluster algebra is the homogeneous coordinate ring of the corresponding positroid variety. We prove that the same statement holds for plabic graphs describing lower dimensional cells. In this way we obtain a map from the positroid strata onto cluster subalgebras of $Gr_{+}(k,n)$. We explore some of the consequences of this map for tree-level scattering amplitudes in $\mathcal N=4$ super Yang-Mills theory.

Links in the complex of weakly separated collections
Published • View PublicationBIB
Plabic graphs are interesting combinatorial objects used to study the totally nonnegative Grassmannian. Faces of plabic graphs are labeled by $k$-element sets of positive integers, and a collection of such $k$-element sets are the face labels of a plabic graph if that collection forms a maximal weakly separated collection. There are moves that one can apply to plabic graphs, and thus to maximal weakly separated collections, analogous to mutations of seeds in cluster algebras. In this short note, we show that if two maximal weakly separated collections can be mutated from one to another, then one can do so while freezing the face labels they have in common.

Dimers, webs, and positroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the dimer model for a planar bipartite graph N embedded in a disk, with boundary vertices on the boundary of the disk. Counting dimer configurations with specified boundary conditions gives a point in the totally nonnegative Grassmannian. Considering pairing probabilities for the double-dimer model gives rise to Grassmann analogues of Rhoades and Skandera's Temperley-Lieb immanants. The same problem for the (probably novel) triple-dimer model gives rise to the combinatorics of Kuperberg's webs and Grassmann analogues of Pylyavskyy's web immanants. This draws a connection between the square move of plabic graphs (or urban renewal of planar bipartite graphs), and Kuperberg's square reduction of webs. Our results also suggest that canonical-like bases might be applied to the dimer model. We furthermore show that these functions on the Grassmannian are compatible with restriction to positroid varieties. Namely, our construction gives bases for the degree two and degree three components of the homogeneous coordinate ring of a positroid variety that are compatible with the cyclic group action.

Positroids, Plabic Graphs, and Scattering Amplitudes in Mathematica
The many intricate connections between scattering amplitudes, on-shell diagrams, and the positroid stratification of the Grassmannian has recently been described in great detail. In order to facilitate the exploration of this rich correspondence, we have prepared a public Mathematica package called "positroids" which includes an array of useful tools including those for the construction of canonical coordinates for positroid configurations, the drawing of representative on-shell (plabic) graphs, and the evaluation of on-shell differential forms. This note documents the functions made available by the positroids package; the package's source code together with a Mathematica notebook containing many detailed examples of its functionality are included with this note's submission files on the arXiv.

Weak Separation and Plabic Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Leclerc and Zelevinsky described quasicommuting families of quantum minors in terms of a certain combinatorial condition, called weak separation. They conjectured that all maximal by inclusion weakly separated collections of minors have the same cardinality, and that they can be related to each other by a sequence of mutations. On the other hand, Postnikov studied total positivity on the Grassmannian. He described a stratification of the totally nonnegative Grassmannian into positroid strata, and constructed their parametrization using plabic graphs. In this paper we link the study of weak separation to plabeic graphs. We extend the notion of weak separation to positroids. We generalize the conjectures of Leclerc and Zelevinsky, and related ones of Scott, and prove them. We show that the maximal weakly separated collections in a positroid are in bijective correspondence with the plabic graphs. This correspondence allows us to use the combinatorial techniques of positroids and plabic graphs to prove the (generalized) purity and mutation connectedness conjectures.
