Jack deformations of Plancherel measures and traceless Gaussian random matrices
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 15 (2008), R149 • View PublicationBIB
We study random partitions $λ=(λ_1,λ_2,...,λ_d)$ of $n$ whose length is not bigger than a fixed number $d$. Suppose a random partition $λ$ is distributed according to the Jack measure, which is a deformation of the Plancherel measure with a positive parameter $α>0$. We prove that for all $α>0$, in the limit as $n \to \infty$, the joint distribution of scaled $λ_1,..., λ_d$ converges to the joint distribution of some random variables from a traceless Gaussian $β$-ensemble with $β=2/α$. We also give a short proof of Regev's asymptotic theorem for the sum of $β$-powers of $f^λ$, the number of standard tableaux of shape $λ$.

Asymptotics of Plancherel measures for the infinite-dimensional unitary group
Published in Advances in Mathematics, Volume 219, Issue 3, 20 October 2008, Pages 894-931 • View PublicationBIB
We study a two-dimensional family of probability measures on infinite Gelfand-Tsetlin schemes induced by a distinguished family of extreme characters of the infinite-dimensional unitary group. These measures are unitary group analogs of the well-known Plancherel measures for symmetric groups. We show that any measure from our family defines a determinantal point process, and we prove that in appropriate scaling limits, such processes converge to two different extensions of the discrete sine process as well as to the extended Airy and Pearcey processes.

Permutations without long decreasing subsequences and random matrices
Published in Electron. J. Combin. 14(1), 2007, Research Paper 11 • Search Publication
We study the shape of the Young diagram λassociated via the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth algorithm to a random permutation in S_n such that the length of the longest decreasing subsequence is not bigger than a fixed number d; in other words we study the restriction of the Plancherel measure to Young diagrams with at most d rows. We prove that in the limit n\to\infty the rows of λbehave like the eigenvalues of a certain random matrix (traceless Gaussian Unitary Ensemble) with d rows and columns. In particular, the length of the longest increasing subsequence of such a random permutation behaves asymptotically like the largest eigenvalue of the corresponding random matrix.

Expected lengths and distribution functions for Young diagrams in the hook
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider $β$--Plancherel measures \cite{Ba.Ra.} on subsets of partitions -- and their asymptotics. These subsets are the Young diagrams contained in a $(k,\ell)$--hook, and we calculate the asymptotics of the expected shape of these diagrams, relative to such measures. We also calculate the asymptotics of the distribution function of the lengths of the rows and the columns for these diagrams. This might be considered as the restriction to the $(k,\ell)$--hook of the fundamental work of Baik, Deift and Johansson \cite{B.D.J.1}. The above asymptotics are given here by ratios of certain Selberg-type multi--integrals.

Gaussian fluctuations of characters of symmetric groups and of Young diagrams
Published in Probab. Theory Related Fields 136 (2006), no. 2, 263-297 • View PublicationBIB
We study asymptotics of reducible representations of the symmetric groups S_q for large q. We decompose such a representation as a sum of irreducible components (or, alternatively, Young diagrams) and we ask what is the character of a randomly chosen component (or, what is the shape of a randomly chosen Young diagram). Our main result is that for a large class of representations the fluctuations of characters (and fluctuations of the shape of the Young diagrams) are asymptotically Gaussian; in this way we generalize Kerov's central limit theorem. The considered class consists of representations for which the characters almost factorize and this class includes, for example, left-regular representation (Plancherel measure), tensor representations. This class is also closed under induction, restriction, outer product and tensor product of representations. Our main tool in the proof is the method of genus expansion, well known from the random matrix theory.

Correlation functions of the shifted Schur measure
Published in J. Math. Soc. Japan, vol.57, no. 3 (2005), 619--637 • View PublicationBIB
The shifted Schur measure introduced by Tracy and Widom is a measure on the set of all strict partitions, which is defined by Schur $Q$-functions. The main aim of this paper is to calculate the correlation function of this measure, which is given by a pfaffian. As an application, we prove that a limit distribution of $λ_j$'s with respect to a shifted version of the Plancherel measure for symmetric groups is identical with the corresponding distribution of the original Plancherel measure. Further we give expressions of the mean value and the variance of the size of a partition with respect to the measure defined by Hall-Littlewood functions.

Kerov's central limit theorem for the Plancherel measure on Young diagrams
Published in In: S.Fomin, editor. Symmetric Functions 2001: Surveys of Developments and Perspectives (NATO Science Series II. Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. Vol.74), Kluwer, 2002, pp. 93-151 • View PublicationBIB
Consider random Young diagrams with a fixed number n of boxes, where the probability distribution on diagrams is determined by the Plancherel measure. That is, the weight of a diagram is proportional to the squared dimension of the corresponding irreducible representation of the symmetric group S_n. As n goes to infinity, the boundary of the (suitably scaled) random diagram concentrates near a curve Omega (Logan-Shepp 1977, Vershik-Kerov 1977). In 1993, Kerov announced a central limit theorem describing Gaussian fluctuations of random diagrams around the limit shape Omega. Here we propose a reconstruction of his proof, largely based on Kerov's unpublished work notes (1999). We also discuss a striking similarity between Kerov's result and central limit theorems for random matrices (Diaconis-Shahshahani, Johansson).

A Card Shuffling Analysis of Deformations of the Plancherel Measure of the Symmetric Group
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study deformations of the Plancherel measure of the symmetric group by lifting them to the symmetric group and using combinatorics of card shuffling. The existing methods for analyzing deformations of Plancherel measure are not obviously applicable to the examples in this paper. The main idea of this paper is to find and analyze a formula for the total variation distance between iterations of riffle shuffles and iterations of "cut and then riffle shuffle". Similar results are given for affine shuffles, which allow us to determine their convergence rate to randomness.

Symmetric groups and random matrices
The convolution of indicators of two conjugacy classes on the symmetric group S_q is usually a complicated linear combination of indicators of many conjugacy classes. Similarly, a product of the moments of the Jucys--Murphy element involves many conjugacy classes with complicated coefficients. In this article we consider a combinatorial setup which allows us to manipulate such products easily and we show that it very closely related to the combinatorial approach to random matrices. Our formulas are exact (in a sense that they hold not only asymptotically for large q). This result has many interesting applications, for example it allows to find precise asymptotics of characters of large symmetric groups and asymptotics of the Plancherel measure on Young diagrams.

Discrete gap probabilities and discrete Painleve equations
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove that Fredholm determinants of the form det(1-K_s), where K_s is the restriction of either the discrete Bessel kernel or the discrete {}_2F_1 kernel to {s,s+1,...}, can be expressed through solutions of discrete Painleve II and V equations, respectively. These Fredholm determinants can also be viewed as distribution functions of the first part of the random partitions distributed according to a poissonized Plancherel measure and a z-measure, or as normalized Toeplitz determinants with symbols exp(η(u+1/u)) and (1+u)^z(1+ξ/u)^{z'}. The proofs are based on a general formalism involving discrete integrable operators and discrete Riemann-Hilbert problem. A continuous version of the formalism has been worked out in math-ph/0111007.

A Fredholm Determinant Identity and the Convergence of Moments for Random Young Tableaux
Published • View PublicationBIB
We obtain an identity between Fredholm determinants of two kinds of operators, one acting on functions on the unit circle and the other acting on functions on a subset of the integers. This identity is a generalization of an identity between a Toeplitz determinant and a Fredholm determinant that has appeared in the random permutation context. Using this identity, we prove, in particular, convergence of moments for arbitrary rows of a random Young diagram under Plancherel measure.

Riemann-Hilbert problem and the discrete Bessel kernel
We use discrete analogs of Riemann-Hilbert problem's methods to derive the discrete Bessel kernel which describes the poissonized Plancherel measures for symmetric groups. To do this we define discrete analogs of a Riemann-Hilbert problem and of an integrable integral operator and show that computing the resolvent of a discrete integrable operator can be reduced to solving a corresponding discrete Riemann-Hilbert problem. We also give an example, explicitly solvable in terms of classical special functions, when a discrete Riemann-Hilbert problem converges in a certain scaling limit to a conventional one; the example originates from the representation theory of the infinite symmetric group.

Infinite wedge and random partitions

Using techniques from integrable systems, we obtain a number of exact results for random partitions. In particular, we prove a simple formula for correlation functions of what we call the Schur measure on partitions (which is a far reaching generalization of the Plancherel measure, see math.CO/9905032) and also show that these correlations functions are tau-functions for the Toda lattice hierarchy. Also we give a new proof of the formula due to Bloch and the author, see alg-geom/9712009, for the so called n-point functions of the uniform measure on partitions and comment on the local structure of a typical partition.

Discrete orthogonal polynomial ensembles and the Plancherel measure
Published in Ann. of Math. (2) 153 (2001), no. 2, 259--296 • View PublicationBIB
We consider discrete orthogonal polynomial ensembles which are discrete analogues of the orthogonal polynomial ensembles in random matrix theory. These ensembles occur in certain problems in combinatorial probability and can be thought of as probability measures on partitions. The Meixner ensemble is related to a two-dimensional directed growth model, and the Charlier ensemble is related to the lengths of weakly increasing subsequences in random words. The Krawtchouk ensemble occurs in connection with zig-zag paths in random domino tilings of the Aztec diamond, and also in a certain simplified directed first-passage percolation model. We use the Charlier ensemble to investigate the asymptotics of weakly increasing subsequences in random words and to prove a conjecture of Tracy and Widom. As a limit of the Meixner ensemble or the Charlier ensemble we obtain the Plancherel measure on partitions, and using this we prove a conjecture of Baik, Deift and Johansson that under the Plancherel measure, the distribution of the lengths of the first k rows in the partition, appropriately scaled, converges to the asymptotic joint distribution for the k largest eigenvalues of a random matrix from the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble. In this problem a certain discrete kernel, which we call the discrete Bessel kernel, plays an important role.

Asymptotics of Plancherel measures for symmetric groups
Published in J. Amer. Math. Soc. 13 (2000), no. 3, 481--515. • View PublicationBIB
We consider the asymptotics of the Plancherel measures on partitions of $n$ as $n$ goes to infinity. We prove that the local structure of a Plancherel typical partition (which we identify with a Young diagram) in the middle of the limit shape converges to a determinantal point process with the discrete sine kernel. On the edges of the limit shape, we prove that the joint distribution of suitably scaled 1st, 2nd, and so on rows of a Plancherel typical diagram converges to the corresponding distribution for eigenvalues of random Hermitian matrices (given by the Airy kernel). This proves a conjecture due to Baik, Deift, and Johansson by methods different from the Riemann-Hilbert techniques used in their original papers math.CO/9810105 and math.CO/9901118 and from the combinatorial approach proposed by Okounkov in math.CO/9903176. Our approach is based on an exact determinantal formula for the correlation functions of the poissonized Plancherel measures involving a new kernel on the 1-dimensional lattice. This kernel is expressed in terms of Bessel functions and we obtain it as a degeneration of the hypergeometric kernel from the paper math.RT/9904010 by Borodin and Olshanski. Our asymptotic analysis relies on the classical asymptotic formulas for the Bessel functions and depoissonization techniques.

Random Matrices and Random Permutations
We prove the conjecture of Baik, Deift, and Johansson which says that with respect to the Plancherel measure on the set of partitions of $n$, the 1st, 2nd, and so on, rows behave, suitably scaled, like the 1st, 2nd, and so on, eigenvalues of a Gaussian random Hermitian matrix as $n$ goes to infinity. Our proof is based on an interplay between maps on surfaces and ramified coverings of the sphere. We also establish a connection of this problem with intersection theory on the moduli spaces of curves.

On the distribution of the length of the second row of a Young diagram under Plancherel measure
Published • View PublicationBIB
We investigate the probability distribution of the length of the second row of a Young diagram of size $N$ equipped with Plancherel measure. We obtain an expression for the generating function of the distribution in terms of a derivative of an associated Fredholm determinant, which can then be used to show that as $N\to\infty$ the distribution converges to the Tracy-Widom distribution [TW] for the second largest eigenvalue of a random GUE matrix. This paper is a sequel to [BDJ], where we showed that as $N\to\infty$ the distribution of the length of the first row of a Young diagram, or equivalently, the length of the longest increasing subsequence of a random permutation, converges to the Tracy-Widom distribution [TW] for the largest eigenvalue of a random GUE matrix.
