Motivated by the concepts of the inverse Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomial and the equivariant Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomial, Proudfoot defined the equivariant inverse Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomial for a matroid. In this paper, we show that the equivariant inverse Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomial of a matroid is very useful for determining its equivariant Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials, and we determine the equivariant inverse Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials for Boolean matroids and uniform matroids. As an application, we give a new proof of Gedeon, Proudfoot and Young's formula for the equivariant Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials of uniform matroids. Inspired by Lee, Nasr and Radcliffe's combinatorial interpretation for the ordinary Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials of uniform matroids, we further present a new formula for the corresponding equivariant Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials.

Let $\ell$ be a rational prime. Previously, abelian $\ell$-towers of multigraphs were introduced which are analogous to $\mathbb{Z}_{\ell}$-extensions of number fields. It was shown that for a certain class of towers of bouquets, the growth of the $\ell$-part of the number of spanning trees behaves in a predictable manner (analogous to a well-known theorem of Iwasawa for $\mathbb{Z}_{\ell}$-extensions of number fields). In this paper, we give a generalization to a broader class of regular abelian $\ell$-towers of bouquets than was originally considered. To carry this out, we observe that certain shifted Chebyshev polynomials are members of a continuously parametrized family of power series with coefficients in $\mathbb{Z}_{\ell}$ and then study the special value at $s=1$ of the Artin-Ihara $L$-function $\ell$-adically.

We prove a case of a positivity conjecture of Mihalcea-Singh, concerned with the local Euler obstructions associated to the Schubert stratification of the Lagrangian Grassmannian LG(n,2n). Combined with work of Aluffi-Mihalcea-Schürmann-Su, this further implies the positivity of the Mather classes for Schubert varieties in LG(n,2n), which Mihalcea-Singh had verified for the other cominuscule spaces of classical Lie type. Building on the work of Boe and Fu, we give a positive recursion for the local Euler obstructions, and use it to show that they provide a positive count of admissible labelings of certain trees, analogous to the ones describing Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials. Unlike in the case of the Grassmannians in types A and D, for LG(n,2n) the Euler obstructions e_{y,w} may vanish for certain pairs (y,w) with y <= w in the Bruhat order. Our combinatorial description allows us to classify all the pairs (y,w) for which e_{y,w}=0. Restricting to the big opposite cell in LG(n,2n), which is naturally identified with the space of n x n symmetric matrices, we recover the formulas for the local Euler obstructions associated with the matrix rank stratification.

We study integer-valued matrices with bounded determinants. Such matrices appear in the theory of integer programs (IP) with bounded determinants. For example, Artmann et al. showed that an IP can be solved in strongly polynomial time if the constraint matrix is bimodular, that is, the determinants are bounded in absolute value by two. Determinants are also used to bound the $\ell_1$-distance between IP solutions and solutions of its linear relaxation. One of the first works to quantify the complexity of IPs with bounded determinants was that of Heller, who identified the maximum number of differing columns in a totally unimodular matrix. Each extension of Heller's bound to general determinants has been super-polynomial in the determinants or the number of equations. We provide the first column bound that is polynomial in both values. For integer programs with box constraints, our result gives the first $\ell_1$-distance bound that is polynomial in the determinants and the number of equations. Our result can also be used to derive a bound on the height of Graver basis elements that is polynomial in the determinants and the number of equations. Furthermore, we show a tight bound on the number of differing columns in a bimodular matrix; this is the first tight bound since Heller. Our analysis reveals combinatorial properties of bimodular IPs that may be of independent interest.

We study generating functions of strict and non-strict order polynomials of series-parallel posets, called order series. These order series are closely related to Ehrhart series and h*-polynomials of the associated order polytopes. We explain how they can be understood as algebras over a certain operad of posets. Our main results are based on the fact that the order series of chains form a basis in the space of order series. This allows to reduce the search space of an algorithm that finds for a given power series f, if possible, a poset P such that f is the generating function of the order polynomial of P. In terms of Ehrhart theory of order polytopes, the coordinates with respect to this basis describe the number of (internal) simplices in the canonical triangulation of the order polytope of P. Furthermore, we derive a new proof of the reciprocity theorem of Stanley. As an application, we find new identities for binomial coefficients and for finite partitions that allow for empty sets, and we describe properties of the negative hypergeometric distribution.

Let $T_G(x,y)$ be the Tutte polynomial of a graph $G$. In this paper we show that if $(G_n)_n$ is a sequence of $d$-regular graphs with girth $g(G_n)\to \infty$, then for $x\geq 1$ and $0\leq y\leq 1$ we have $$\lim_{n\to \infty}T_{G_n}(x,y)^{1/v(G_n)}=t_d(x,y),$$ where $$t_d(x,y)=\left\{\begin{array}{lc} (d-1)\left(\frac{(d-1)^2}{(d-1)^2-x}\right)^{d/2-1}&\ \ \mbox{if}\ x\leq d-1,\\ x\left(1+\frac{1}{x-1}\right)^{d/2-1} &\ \ \mbox{if}\ x> d-1. \end{array}\right.$$ independently of $y$ if $0\leq y\leq 1$. If $(G_n)_n$ is a sequence of random $d$-regular graphs, then the same statement holds true asymptotically almost surely.
This theorem generalizes results of McKay ($x=1,y=1$, spanning trees of random $d$-regular graphs) and Lyons ($x=1,y=1$, spanning trees of large-girth $d$-regular graphs). Interesting special cases are $T_G(2,1)$ counting the number of spanning forests, $T_G(2,0)$ counting the number of acyclic orientations.

Let us fix a prime $p$ and a homogeneous system of $m$ linear equations $a_{j,1}x_1+\dots+a_{j,k}x_k=0$ for $j=1,\dots,m$ with coefficients $a_{j,i}\in\mathbb{F}_p$. Suppose that $k\geq 3m$, that $a_{j,1}+\dots+a_{j,k}=0$ for $j=1,\dots,m$ and that every $m\times m$ minor of the $m\times k$ matrix $(a_{j,i})_{j,i}$ is non-singular. Then we prove that for any (large) $n$, any subset $A\subseteq\mathbb{F}_p^n$ of size $|A|> C\cdot Γ^n$ contains a solution $(x_1,\dots,x_k)\in A^k$ to the given system of equations such that the vectors $x_1,\dots,x_k\in A$ are all distinct. Here, $C$ and $Γ$ are constants only depending on $p$, $m$ and $k$ such that $Γ<p$.
The crucial point here is the condition for the vectors $x_1,\dots,x_k$ in the solution $(x_1,\dots,x_k)\in A^k$ to be distinct. If we relax this condition and only demand that $x_1,\dots,x_k$ are not all equal, then the statement would follow easily from Tao's slice rank polynomial method. However, handling the distinctness condition is much harder, and requires a new approach. While all previous combinatorial applications of the slice rank polynomial method have relied on the slice rank of diagonal tensors, we use a slice rank argument for a non-diagonal tensor in combination with combinatorial and probabilistic arguments.
Principal specialization of dual characters of flagged Weyl modules
Schur polynomials are special cases of Schubert polynomials, which in turn are special cases of dual characters of flagged Weyl modules. The principal specialization of Schur and Schubert polynomials has a long history, with Macdonald famously expressing the principal specialization of any Schubert polynomial in terms of reduced words. We study the principal specialization of dual characters of flagged Weyl~modules. Our result yields an alternative proof of a conjecture of Stanley about the principal specialization of Schubert polynomials, originally proved by Weigandt.

Discrete Morse theory, a cell complex-analog to smooth Morse theory, has been developed over the past few decades since its original formulation by Robin Forman in 1998. In particular, discrete gradient vector fields on simplicial complexes capture important features of discrete Morse functions. We prove that the characteristic polynomials of the Laplacian matrices of a simplicial complex are generating functions for discrete gradient vector fields of discrete Morse functions when the complex is either a graph or a triangulation of an orientable manifold. Furthermore, we provide a full characterization of the correspondence between rooted forests in higher dimensions and discrete gradient vector fields.

We consider the lower-triangular matrix of generating polynomials that enumerate $k$-component forests of rooted trees on the vertex set $[n]$ according to the number of improper edges (generalizations of the Ramanujan polynomials). We show that this matrix is coefficientwise totally positive and that the sequence of its row-generating polynomials is coefficientwise Hankel-totally positive. More generally, we define the generic rooted-forest polynomials by introducing also a weight $m! \, φ_m$ for each vertex with $m$ proper children. We show that if the weight sequence $φ$ is Toeplitz-totally positive, then the two foregoing total-positivity results continue to hold. Our proofs use production matrices and exponential Riordan arrays.

In this paper we investigate Erdős-Ko-Rado theorems in ovoidal circle geometries. We prove that in Möbius planes of even order greater than 2, and ovoidal Laguerre planes of odd order, the largest families of circles which pairwise intersect in at least one point, consist of all circles through a fixed point. In ovoidal Laguerre planes of even order, a similar result holds, but there is one other type of largest family of pairwise intersecting circles. As a corollary, we prove that the largest families of polynomials over $\mathbb F_q$ of degree at most $k$, with $2 \leq k < q$, which pairwise take the same value on at least one point, consist of all polynomials $f$ of degree at most $k$ such that $f(x) = y$ for some fixed $x$ and $y$ in $\mathbb F_q$. We also discuss this problem for ovoidal Minkowski planes, and we investigate the largest families of circles pairwise intersecting in two points in circle geometries.
A Combinatorial Approach to the Groebner Bases for Ideals Generated by Elementary Symmetric Functions

Previous work by Mora and Sala provides the reduced Groebner basis of the ideal formed by the elementary symmetric polynomials in $n$ variables of degrees $k=1,\dots,n$, $\langle e_{1,n}(x), \dots, e_{n,n}(x) \rangle$. Haglund, Rhoades, and Shimonozo expand upon this, finding the reduced Groebner basis of the ideal of elementary symmetric polynomials in $n$ variables of degree $d$ for $d=n-k+1,\dots,n$ for $k\leq n$. In this paper, we further generalize their findings by using symbolic computation and experimentation to construct the reduced Groebner basis for the ideal generated by the elementary symmetric polynomials in $n$ variables of arbitrary degrees.
An uniform version of Dvir and Moran's theorem
Dvir and Moran proved the following upper bound for the size of a family $\mbox{$\cal F$}$ of subsets of $[n]$ with $\mbox{Vdim}(\mbox{$\cal F$} Δ\mbox{$\cal F$})\leq d$.
Let $d\leq n$ be integers. Let $\mbox{$\cal F$}$ be a family of subsets of $[n]$ with $\mbox{Vdim}(\mbox{$\cal F$} Δ\mbox{$\cal F$})\leq d$. Then \[ \left|\mbox{$\cal F$}\right|\le 2\sum_{k=0}^{\lfloor d/2 \rfloor}\binom nk. \]
Our main result is the following uniform version of Dvir and Moran's result.
Let $d\leq n$ be integers. Let $\mbox{$\cal F$}$ be an uniform family of subsets of $[n]$ with $\mbox{Vdim}(\mbox{$\cal F$} Δ\mbox{$\cal F$})\leq d$. Then \[ \left|\mbox{$\cal F$}\right|\le 2 {n \choose \lfloor d/2 \rfloor}. \]
Denote by $\mathbf{v_F}\in \{0,1\}^n$ the characteristic vector of a set $F \subseteq [n]$.
Our proof is based on the following uniform version of Croot-Lev-Pach Lemma:
Let $0\leq d\leq n$ be integers. Let $\mbox{$\cal H$}$ be a $k$-uniform family of subsets of $[n]$. Let $\mathbb F$ be a field. Suppose that there exists a polynomial $P(x_1, \ldots ,x_n,y_1, \ldots ,y_n)\in \mathbb F[x_1, \ldots ,x_n,y_1, \ldots ,y_n]$ with $\mbox{deg}(P)\leq d$ such that $P(\mathbf{v_F},\mathbf{v_F})\ne 0$ for each $F\in \mbox{$\cal H$}$ and $P(\mathbf{v_F},\mathbf{v_G})= 0$ for each $F\ne G\in \mbox{$\cal H$}$. Then \[ \left|\mbox{$\cal H$}\right|\le 2 {n \choose \lfloor d/2 \rfloor}. \]

In this article we disprove the conjectures asserting the positivity of the coefficients of the Ehrhart polynomial of matroid polytopes by De Loera, Haws and Köppe (2007) and of generalized permutohedra by Castillo and Liu (2015). We prove constructively that for every $n\geq 19$ there exist connected matroids on $n$ elements that are not Ehrhart positive. Also, we prove that for every $k\geq 3$ there exist connected matroids of rank $k$ that are not Ehrhart positive. Our proofs rely on our previous results on the geometric interpretation of the operation of circuit-hyperplane relaxation and our formulas for the Ehrhart polynomials of hypersimplices and minimal matroids. This allows us to give a precise expression for the Ehrhart polynomials of all sparse paving matroids, a class of matroids which is conjectured to be predominant and which contains the counterexamples arising from our construction.

The combinatorial invariance conjecture (due independently to G. Lusztig and M. Dyer) predicts that if $[x,y]$ and $[x',y']$ are isomorphic Bruhat posets (of possibly different Coxeter systems), then the corresponding Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials are equal, that is, $P_{x,y}(q)=P_{x',y'}(q)$. We prove this conjecture for the affine Weyl group of type $\widetilde{A}_2$. This is the first infinite group with non-trivial Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials where the conjecture is proved.
The "Young" and "reverse" dichotomy of polynomials

A "flip-and-reversal" involution arising in the study of quasisymmetric Schur functions provides a passage between what we term "Young" and "reverse" variants of bases of polynomials or quasisymmetric functions. Building on this perspective, which has found recent application in the study of $q$-analogues of combinatorial Hopf algebras and generalizations of dual immaculate functions, we develop and explore Young analogues of well-known bases for polynomials. We prove several combinatorial formulas for the Young analogue of the key polynomials, show that they form the generating functions for left keys, and provide a representation-theoretic interpretation of Young key polynomials as traces on certain modules. We also give combinatorial formulas for the Young analogues of Schubert polynomials, including their crystal graph structure. We moreover determine the intersections of (reverse) bases and their Young counterparts, further clarifying their relationships to one another.
Block designs and prime values of polynomials

A recent construction by Amarra, Devillers and Praeger of block designs with specific parameters depends on certain quadratic polynomials, with integer coefficients, taking prime power values. The Bunyakovsky Conjecture, if true, would imply that each of them takes infinitely many prime values, giving an infinite family of block designs with the required parameters. We have found large numbers of prime values of these polynomials, and the numbers found agree very closely with the estimates for them provided by Li's recent modification of the Bateman-Horn Conjecture. While this does not prove that these polynomials take infinitely many prime values, it provides strong evidence for this, and it also adds extra support for the validity of the Bunyakovsky and Bateman-Horn Conjectures.
Polynomial ergodic averages for certain countable ring actions

A recent result of Frantzikinakis establishes sufficient conditions for joint ergodicity in the setting of $\mathbb{Z}$-actions. We generalize this result for actions of second-countable locally compact abelian groups. We obtain two applications of this result. First, we show that, given an ergodic action $(T_n)_{n \in F}$ of a countable field $F$ with characteristic zero on a probability space $(X,\mathcal{B},μ)$ and a family $\{p_1,\dots,p_k\}$ of independent polynomials, we have \[ \lim_{N \to \infty} \frac{1}{|Φ_N|}\sum_{n \in Φ_N} T_{p_1(n)}f_1\cdots T_{p_k(n)}f_k\ = \ \prod_{j=1}^k \int_X f_i \ dμ,\] where $f_i \in L^{\infty}(μ)$, $(Φ_N)$ is a Fø lner sequence of $(F,+)$, and the convergence takes place in $L^2(μ)$. This yields corollaries in combinatorics and topological dynamics. Second, we prove that a similar result holds for totally ergodic actions of suitable rings.

Improved bounds for zeros of the chromatic polynomial on bounded degree graphs
We prove that for any graph $G$ of maximum degree at most $Δ$, the zeros of its chromatic polynomial $χ_G(z)$ (in $\mathbb{C}$) lie outside the disk of radius $5.02 Δ$ centered at $0$. This improves on the previously best known bound of approximately $6.91Δ$.
In the case of graphs of high girth we can improve this. We prove that for every $g$ there is a constant $K_g$ such that for any graph $G$ of maximum degree at most $Δ$ and girth at least $g$, the zeros of its chromatic polynomial $χ_G(z)$ lie outside the disk of radius $K_g Δ$ centered at $0$ where $K_g \to 1 + e \approx 3.72$ as $g \to \infty$.
Finally, we give improved bounds on the Fisher zeros of the partition function of the Ising model.
