Shift modules, strongly stable ideals, and their dualities
We enrich the setting of strongly stable ideals (SSI): We introduce shift modules, a module category encompassing SSI's. The recently introduced duality on SSI's is given an effective conceptual and computational setting. We study strongly stable ideals in infinite dimensional polynomial rings, where the duality is most natural. Finally a new type of resolution for SSI's is introduced. This is the projective resolution in the category of shift modules.
A Refinement of the Murnaghan-Nakayama Rule by Descents for Border Strip Tableaux

Lusztig's fake degree is the generating polynomial for the major index of standard Young tableaux of a given shape. Results of Springer and James & Kerber imply that, mysteriously, its evaluation at a $k$-th primitive root of unity yields the number of border strip tableaux with all strips of size $k$, up to sign. This is essentially the special case of the Murnaghan-Nakayama rule for evaluating an irreducible character of the symmetric group at a rectangular partition.
We refine this result to standard Young tableaux and border strip tableaux with a given number of descents. To do so, we introduce a new statistic for border strip tableaux, extending the classical definition of descents in standard Young tableaux. Curiously, it turns out that our new statistic is very closely related to a descent set for tuples of standard Young tableaux appearing in the quasisymmetric expansion of LLT polynomials given by Haglund, Haiman and Loehr.
Plethystic exponential calculus and characteristic polynomials of permutations

We prove a family of identities, expressing generating functions of powers of characteristic polynomials of permutations, as finite or infinite products. These generalize formulae first obtained in a study of the geometry/topology of symmetric products of real/algebraic tori. The proof uses formal power series expansions of plethystic exponentials, and has been motivated by some recent applications of these combinatorial tools in supersymmetric gauge and string theories. Since the methods are elementary, we tried to be self-contained, and relate to other topics such as the q-binoomial theorem, and the cycle index and Molien series for the symmetric group.
Matrix coefficients of intertwining operators and the Bruhat order
Let $(π_{\mathbf{z}},V_{\mathbf{z}})$ be an unramified principal series representation of a reductive group over a nonarchimedean local field, parametrized by an element $\mathbf{z}$ of the maximal torus in the Langlands dual group. If $v$ is an element of the Weyl group $W$, then the standard intertwining integral $\mathcal{A}_v$ maps $V_{\mathbf{z}}$ to $V_{v\mathbf{z}}$. Letting $ψ^{\mathbf{z}}_w$ with $w\in W$ be a suitable basis of the Iwahori fixed vectors in $V_{\mathbf{z}}$, and $\widehatψ^{\mathbf{z}}_w$ a basis of the contragredient representation, we define $σ(u,v,w)$ (for $u,v,w\in W$) to be $\langle \mathcal{A}_vψ_u^{\mathbf{z}},\widehatψ^{v\mathbf{z}}_w\rangle$. This is an interesting function and we initiate its study. We show that given $u$ and $w$, there is a minimal $v$ such that $σ(u,v,w)\neq 0$. Denoting this $v$ as $v_\hbox{min}=v_\hbox{min}(u,w)$, we will prove that $σ(u,v_\hbox{min},w)$ is a polynomial of the cardinality $q$ of the residue field. Indeed if $v>v_\hbox{min}$, then $σ(u,v,w)$ is a rational function of $\mathbf{z}$ and $q$, whose denominator we describe. But if $v=v_\hbox{min}$, the dependence on $\mathbf{z}$ disappears. We will express $σ(u,v_\hbox{min},w)$ as the Poincaré polynomial of a Bruhat interval. The proof leads to fairly intricate considerations of the Bruhat order.
Thus our results require us to prove some facts that may be of independent interest, relating the Bruhat order $\leqslant$ and the weak Bruhat order $\leqslant_R$. For example we will prove (for finite Coxeter groups) the following "mixed meet" property. If $u, w$ are elements of $W$, then there exists a unique element $m \in W$ that is maximal with respect to the condition that $m \leqslant_R u$ and $m \leqslant w$. Thus if $z \leqslant_R u$ and $z \leqslant w$, then $x \leqslant m$. The value $v_\hbox{min}$ is $m^{-1}u$.

We study the Pieri type formulas for the Schur multiple zeta functions along with those for the Schur polynomials. To formulate these formulas, we introduce a new insertion rule for adding boxes in the Young tableaux and obtain the results for the hook type Schur multiple zeta functions. For the proof, we show {certain} extended Jacobi-Trudi formulas for the Schur multiple zeta functions.
Computational Aspects of Relaxation Complexity: Possibilities and Limitations

The relaxation complexity $\mathrm{rc}(X)$ of the set of integer points $X$ contained in a polyhedron is the smallest number of facets of any polyhedron $P$ such that the integer points in $P$ coincide with $X$. It is a useful tool to investigate the existence of compact linear descriptions of $X$. In this article, we derive tight and computable upper bounds on $\mathrm{rc}_{\mathbb{Q}}(X)$, a variant of $\mathrm{rc}(X)$ in which the polyhedra $P$ are required to be rational, and we show that $\mathrm{rc}(X)$ can be computed in polynomial time if $X$ is 2-dimensional. Further, we investigate computable lower bounds on $\mathrm{rc}(X)$ with the particular focus on the existence of a finite set $Y \subseteq \mathbb{Z}^d$ such that separating $X$ and $Y \setminus X$ allows us to deduce $\mathrm{rc}(X) \geq k$. In particular, we show for some choices of $X$ that no such finite set $Y$ exists to certify the value of $\mathrm{rc}(X)$, providing a negative answer to a question by Weltge (2015). We also obtain an explicit formula for $\mathrm{rc}(X)$ for specific classes of sets $X$ and present the first practically applicable approach to compute $\mathrm{rc}(X)$ for sets $X$ that admit a finite certificate.

We count the number of polynomials over finite fields with prescribed leading coefficients and a given number of linear factors. This is equivalent to counting codewords in Reed-Solomon codes which are at a certain distance from a received word. We first apply the generating function approach, which is recently developed by the author and collaborators, to derive expressions for the number of monic polynomials with prescribed leading coefficients and linear factors. We then apply Li and Wan's sieve formula to simplify the expressions in some special cases. Our results extend and improve some recent results by Li and Wan, and Zhou, Wang and Wang.

In this paper, we study the Ehrhart polynomial of the dual of the root polytope of type C of dimension $d$, denoted by $C_d^*$. We prove that the roots of the Ehrhart polynomial of $C_d^*$ have the same real part $-1/2$, and we also prove that the Ehrhart polynomials of $C_d^*$ for $d=1,2,\cdots$ has the interlacing property.
New families of permutation trinomials constructed by permutations of $μ_{q+1}$
Permutation polynomials are of particular significance in several areas of applied mathematics, such as Coding theory and Cryptography. Many recent constructions are based on the Akbary-Ghioca-Wang (AGW) criterion. Along this line of research, we provide new classes of permutation trinomials in $\mathbb{F}_{q^2}$ of the form $f(x)=x^r h(x^{q-1})$, by studying permutations of the set of $(q+1)$-th roots of unity, which look like monomials on the sets of suitable partitions.

To every finite metric space $X$, including all connected unweighted graphs with the minimum edge-distance metric, we attach an invariant that we call its blowup-polynomial $p_X(\{ n_x : x \in X \})$. This is obtained from the blowup $X[{\bf n}]$ - which contains $n_x$ copies of each point $x$ - by computing the determinant of the distance matrix of $X[{\bf n}]$ and removing an exponential factor. We prove that as a function of the sizes $n_x$, $p_X({\bf n})$ is a polynomial, is multi-affine, and is real-stable. This naturally associates a hitherto unstudied delta-matroid to each metric space $X$; we produce another novel delta-matroid for each tree, which interestingly does not generalize to all graphs.
We next specialize to the case of $X = G$ a connected unweighted graph - so $p_G$ is "partially symmetric" in $\{ n_v : v \in V(G) \}$ - and show three further results: (a) We show that the polynomial $p_G$ is indeed a graph invariant, in that $p_G$ and its symmetries recover the graph $G$ and its isometries, respectively. (b) We show that the univariate specialization $u_G(x) := p_G(x,\dots,x)$ is a transform of the characteristic polynomial of the distance matrix $D_G$; this connects the blowup-polynomial of $G$ to the well-studied "distance spectrum" of $G$. (c) We obtain a novel characterization of complete multipartite graphs, as precisely those for which the "homogenization at $-1$" of $p_G({\bf n})$ is real-stable (equivalently, Lorentzian, or strongly/completely log-concave), if and only if the normalization of $p_G(-{\bf n})$ is strongly Rayleigh.
The jump of the clique chromatic number of random graphs

The clique chromatic number of a graph is the smallest number of colors in a vertex coloring so that no maximal clique is monochromatic. In 2016 McDiarmid, Mitsche and Pralat noted that around p \approx n^{-1/2} the clique chromatic number of the random graph G_{n,p} changes by n^{Ω(1)} when we increase the edge-probability p by n^{o(1)}, but left the details of this surprising phenomenon as an open problem.
We settle this problem, i.e., resolve the nature of this polynomial `jump' of the clique chromatic number of the random graph G_{n,p} around edge-probability p \approx n^{-1/2}. Our proof uses a mix of approximation and concentration arguments, which enables us to (i) go beyond Janson's inequality used in previous work and (ii) determine the clique chromatic number of G_{n,p} up to logarithmic factors for any edge-probability p.
DP color functions versus chromatic polynomials

For any graph $G$, the chromatic polynomial of $G$ is the function $P(G,m)$ which counts the number of proper $m$-colorings of $G$ for each positive integer $m$. The DP color function $P_{DP}(G,m)$ of $G$, introduced by Kaul and Mudrock in 2019, is a generalization of $P(G,m)$ with $P_{DP}(G,m)\le P(G,m)$ for each positive integer $m$. Let $P_{DP}(G)\approx P(G)$ (resp. $P_{DP}(G)< P(G)$) denote the property that $P_{DP}(G,m)=P(G,m)$ (resp. $P_{DP}(G,m)<P(G,m)$) holds for sufficiently large integers $m$.It is an interesting problem of finding graphs $G$ for which $P_{DP}(G)\approx P(G)$ (resp. $P_{DP}(G,m)<P(G,m)$) holds. Kaul and Mudrock showed that if $G$ has an even girth, then $P_{DP}(G)<P(G)$ and Mudrock and Thomason recently proved that $P_{DP}(G)\approx P(G)$ holds for each graph $G$ which has a dominating vertex. We shall generalize their results in this article. For each edge $e$ in $G$, let $\ell(e)=\infty$ if $e$ is a bridge of $G$, and let $\ell(e)$ be the length of a shortest cycle in $G$ containing $e$ otherwise. We first show that if $\ell(e)$ is even for some edge $e$ in $G$, then $P_{DP}(G)<P(G)$ holds. However, the converse statement of this conclusion fails with infinitely many counterexamples. We then prove that $P_{DP}(G)\approx P(G)$ holds for every graph $G$ that contains a spanning tree $T$ such that for each $e\in E(G)\setminus E(T)$, $\ell(e)$ is odd and $e$ contained in a cycle $C$ of length $\ell (e)$ with the property that $\ell(e')<\ell(e)$ for each $e'\in E(C)\setminus (E(T)\cup \{e\})$. Some open problems are proposed in this article.

We study Schubert polynomials using geometry of infinite-dimensional flag varieties and degeneracy loci. Applications include Graham-positivity of coefficients appearing in equivariant coproduct formulas and expansions of back-stable and enriched Schubert polynomials. We also construct an embedding of the type C flag variety, and study the corresponding pullback map on (equivariant) cohomology rings.

We enumerate and show tables of minimal diagrams for all prime knots up to the triple-crossing number equal to five. We derive a minimal generating set of oriented moves connecting triple-crossing diagrams of the same oriented knot. We also present a conjecture about a strict lower bound of the triple-crossing number of a knot related to the breadth of its Alexander polynomial.

For a given lattice polytope $P$ in $\mathbb{R}^3$, consider the space $\mathcal{L}_P$ of trivariate polynomials over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$, whose Newton polytopes are contained in $P$. We give an upper bound for the maximum number of $\mathbb{F}_q$-zeros of polynomials in $\mathcal{L}_P$ in terms of the Minkowski length of $P$ and $q$, the size of the field. Consequently, this produces lower bounds for the minimum distance of toric codes defined by evaluating elements of $\mathcal{L}_P$ at the points of the algebraic torus $(\mathbb{F}_q^*)^3$. Our approach is based on understanding factorizations of polynomials in $\mathcal{L}_P$ with the largest possible number of non-unit factors. The related combinatorial result that we obtain is a description of Minkowski sums of lattice polytopes contained in $P$ with the largest possible number of non-trivial summands.
Three families of $q$-Lommel polynomials
Three $q$-versions of Lommel polynomials are studied. Included are explicit representations, recurrences, continued fractions, and connections to associated Askey--Wilson polynomials. Combinatorial results are emphasized, including a general theorem when $R_I$ moments coincide with orthogonal polynomial moments. The combinatorial results use weighted Motzkin paths, Schröder paths, and parallelogram polyominoes.

In this paper, we introduce a general family of $q$-hypergeometric polynomials and investigate several $q$-series identities such as an extended generating function and a Srivastava-Agarwal type bilinear generating function for this family of $q$-hypergeometric polynomials. We give a transformational identity involving generating functions for the generalized $q$-hypergeometric polynomials which we have introduced here. We also point out relevant connections of the various $q$-results, which we investigate here, with those in several related earlier works on this subject. We conclude this paper by remarking that it will be a rather trivial and inconsequential exercise to give the so-called $(p,q)$-variations of the $q$-results, which we have investigated here, because the additional parameter $p$ is obviously redundant.
Twisted Linearized Reed-Solomon Codes: A Skew Polynomial Framework

We provide an algebraic description for sum-rank metric codes, as quotient space of a skew polynomial ring. This approach generalizes at the same time the skew group algebra setting for rank-metric codes and the polynomial setting for codes in the Hamming metric. This allows to construct twisted linearized Reed-Solomon codes, a new family of maximum sum-rank distance codes extending at the same time Sheekey's twisted Gabidulin codes in the rank metric and twisted Reed-Solomon codes in the Hamming metric. Furthermore, we provide an analogue in the sum-rank metric of Trombetti-Zhou construction, which also provides a family of maximum sum-rank distance codes. As a byproduct, in the extremal case of the Hamming metric, we obtain a new family of additive MDS codes over quadratic fields.
Infinite monochromatic patterns in the integers

We show the existence of several infinite monochromatic patterns in the integers obtained as values of suitable symmetric polynomials. The simplest example is the following. For every finite coloring of the natural numbers $\mathbb{N}=C_1\cup\ldots\cup C_r$, there exists an increasing sequence $a<b<c<\ldots$ such that all elements below are monochromatic, that is, they belong to the same $C_i$: $$a,b,c,\ldots, a+b+ab, a+c+ac, b+c+bc,\ldots,a+b+c+ab+ac+bc+abc,\ldots.$$ The proofs use algebra in the space of ultrafilters $β\mathbb{Z}$.

The algebraic monoid structure of an incidence algebra is investigated. We show that the multiplicative structure alone determines the algebra automorphisms of the incidence algebra. We present a formula that expresses the complexity of the incidence monoid with respect to the two sided action of its maximal torus in terms of the zeta polynomial of the poset. In addition, we characterize the finite (connected) posets whose incidence monoids have complexity $\leq 1$. Finally, we determine the covering relations of the adherence order on the incidence monoid of a star poset.
