We study tree approximations to classical two-body partition functions on sparse and loopy graphs via the Brydges-Kennedy-Abdessalam-Rivasseau forest expansion. We show that for sparse graphs (with large cycles), the partition function above a certain temperature $T^*$ can be approximated by a graph polynomial expansion over forests of the interaction graph. Within this "forest phase", we show that the approximation can be written in terms of a reference tree $\mathcal T$ on the interaction graph, with corrections due to cycles. From this point of view, this implies that high-temperature models are easy to solve on sparse graphs, as one can evaluate the partition function using belief propagation. We also show that there exists a high- and low-temperature regime, in which $\mathcal T$ can be obtained via a maximal spanning tree algorithm on a (given) weighted graph. We study the algebra of these corrections and provide first- and second-order approximation to the tree Ansatz, and give explicit examples for the first-order approximation.
Pattern Matching in Set Partitions is NP-Complete
In this note we show that pattern matching in permutations is polynomial time reducible to pattern matching in set partitions. In particular, pattern matching in set partitions is NP-Complete.

We derive a new explicit formula in terms of sums over graphs for the $n$-point correlation functions of general formal weighted double Hurwitz numbers coming from the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili tau functions of hypergeometric type (also known as Orlov-Scherbin partition functions). Notably, we use the change of variables suggested by the associated spectral curve, and our formula turns out to be a polynomial expression in a certain small set of formal functions defined on the spectral curve.
Closed forms for powers and inverses of special matrices
This contribution is motivated by old and recent works on matrix powers and their applications on combinatorial sequences. We give in this paper the $s$-th powers and the inverses for special upper triangular matrices and the $s$-th powers for special non-triangular matrices. The used tools are Lagrange inversion formula and the partial Bell polynomials.

Recently Galashin, Grinberg, and Liu introduced the refined dual stable Grothendieck polynomials, which are symmetric functions in $x=(x_1,x_2,\dots)$ with additional parameters $t=(t_1,t_2,\dots)$. The refined dual stable Grothendieck polynomials are defined as a generating function for reverse plane partitions of a given shape. They interpolate between Schur functions and dual stable Grothendieck polynomials introduced by Lam and Pylyavskyy in 2007. Flagged refined dual stable Grothendieck polynomials are a more refined version of refined dual stable Grothendieck polynomials, where lower and upper bounds are given for the entries of each row or column. In this paper Jacobi--Trudi-type formulas for flagged refined dual stable Grothendieck polynomials are proved using plethystic substitution. This resolves a conjecture of Grinberg and generalizes a result by Iwao and Amanov--Yeliussizov.
Characterizing Circular Colouring Mixing for $\frac{p}{q}<4$

Given a graph $G$, the $k$-mixing problem asks: Can one obtain all $k$-colourings of $G$, starting from one $k$-colouring $f$, by changing the colour of only one vertex at a time, while at each step maintaining a $k$-colouring? More generally, for a graph $H$, the $H$-mixing problem asks: Can one obtain all homomorphisms $G \to H$, starting from one homomorphism $f$, by changing the image of only one vertex at a time, while at each step maintaining a homomorphism $G \to H$?
This paper focuses on a generalization of $k$-colourings, namely $(p,q)$-circular colourings. We show that when $2 < \frac{p}{q} < 4$, a graph $G$ is $(p,q)$-mixing if and only if for any $(p,q)$-colouring $f$ of $G$, and any cycle $C$ of $G$, the wind of the cycle under the colouring equals a particular value (which intuitively corresponds to having no wind). As a consequence we show that $(p,q)$-mixing is closed under a restricted homomorphism called a fold. Using this, we deduce that $(2k+1,k)$-mixing is co-NP-complete for all $k \in \mathbb{N}$, and by similar ideas we show that if the circular chromatic number of a connected graph $G$ is $\frac{2k+1}{k}$, then $G$ folds to $C_{2k+1}$. We use the characterization to settle a conjecture of Brewster and Noel, specifically that the circular mixing number of bipartite graphs is $2$. Lastly, we give a polynomial time algorithm for $(p,q)$-mixing in planar graphs when $3 \leq \frac{p}{q} <4$.
The Universality of the Resonance Arrangement and its Betti Numbers

The resonance arrangement $\mathcal{A}_n$ is the arrangement of hyperplanes which has all non-zero $0/1$-vectors in $\mathbb{R}^n$ as normal vectors. It is the adjoint of the Braid arrangement and is also called the all-subsets arrangement. The first result of this article shows that any rational hyperplane arrangement is the minor of some large enough resonance arrangement.
Its chambers appear as regions of polynomiality in algebraic geometry, as generalized retarded functions in mathematical physics and as maximal unbalanced families that have applications in economics. One way to compute the number of chambers of any real arrangement is through the coefficients of its characteristic polynomial which are called Betti numbers. We show that the Betti numbers of the resonance arrangement are determined by a fixed combination of Stirling numbers of the second kind. Lastly, we develop exact formulas for the first two non-trivial Betti numbers of the resonance arrangement.

Let $Q_n(z)$ be the polynomials associated with the Nekrasov-Okounkov formula $$\sum_{n\geq 1} Q_n(z) q^n := \prod_{m = 1}^\infty (1 - q^m)^{-z - 1}.$$ In this paper we partially answer a conjecture of Heim and Neuhauser, which asks if $Q_n(z)$ is unimodal, or stronger, log-concave for all $n \geq 1$. Through a new recursive formula, we show that if $A_{n,k}$ is the coefficient of $z^k$ in $Q_n(z)$, then $A_{n,k}$ is log-concave in $k$ for $k \ll n^{1/6}/\log n$ and monotonically decreasing for $k \gg \sqrt{n}\log n$. We also propose a conjecture that can potentially close the gap.
Minor summation formula of hyperpfaffians and Selberg integrals
In the previous paper (J. Combin. Theory Ser. A, 120, 2013, 1263--1284) H. Tagawa and the two authors proposed an algebraic method to compute certain Pfaffians whose form resemble to Hankel determinants associated with moment sequences of the classical orthogonal polynomials. At the end of the paper they offered several conjectures. In this work we employ a completely different method to evaluate this type of Pfaffians. The idea is to apply certain de Bruijn type formula and convert the evaluation of the Pfaffians to the certain Selberg type integrals. This approach works not only for Pfaffians but also for hyperpfaffians. Hence it enables us to establish much more generalized identities than those conjectured in the previous paper. We also investigate some Pfaffians related to classical $q$-orthogonal polynomials.

Let $s \geq 3$ be a natural number, let $ψ(x)$ be a polynomial with real coefficients and degree $d \geq 2$, and let $A$ be some large, non-empty, finite subset of real numbers. We use $E_{s,2}(A)$ to denote the number of solutions to the system of equations \[ \sum_{i=1}^{s} (ψ(x_i) - ψ(x_{i+s}) )= \sum_{i=1}^{s} ( x_i - x_{i+s} ) = 0, \] where $x_i \in A$ for each $1 \leq i \leq 2s$. Our main result shows that \[ E_{s,2}(A) \ll_{d,s} |A|^{2s -3 + η_{s}}, \] where $η_3 = 1/2$, and $η_{s} = (1/4- 1/7246)\cdot 2^{-s + 4}$ when $s \geq 4$. The only other previously known result of this flavour is due to Bourgain and Demeter, who showed that when $ψ(x) = x^2$ and $s=3$, we have \[E_{3,2}(A) \ll_ε |A|^{3 + 1/2 + ε},\] for each $ε> 0$. Thus our main result improves upon the above estimate, while also generalising it for larger values of $s$ and more wide-ranging choices of $ψ(x)$.
The novelty of our estimates is that they only depend on $d$, $s$ and $|A|$, and are independent of the diameter of $A$. Thus when $A$ is a sparse set, our results are stronger than the corresponding bounds that are provided by methods such as decoupling and efficient congruencing. Consequently, our strategy differs from these two lines of approach, and we employ techniques from incidence geometry, arithmetic combinatorics and analytic number theory. Amongst other applications, our estimates lead to stronger discrete restriction estimates for sparse sequences.

Given a monomial $m$ in a polynomial ring and a subset $L$ of the variables of the polynomial ring, the principal $L$-Borel ideal generated by $m$ is the ideal generated by all monomials which can be obtained from $m$ by successively replacing variables of $m$ by those which are in $L$ and have smaller index. Given a collection $\mathcal{I}=\{I_1,\ldots,I_r\}$ where $I_i$ is $L_i$-Borel for $i=1,\ldots,r$ (where the subsets $L_1,\ldots,L_r$ may be different for each ideal), we prove in essence that if the bipartite incidence graph among the subsets $L_1,\ldots,L_r$ is chordal bipartite, then the defining equations of the multi-Rees algebra of $\mathcal{I}$ has a Gröbner basis of quadrics with squarefree lead terms under lexicographic order. Thus the multi-Rees algebra of such a collection of ideals is Koszul, Cohen-Macaulay, and normal. This significantly generalizes a theorem of Ohsugi and Hibi on Koszul bipartite graphs. As a corollary we obtain that the multi-Rees algebra of a collection of principal Borel ideals is Koszul. To prove our main result we use a fiber-wise Gröbner basis criterion for the kernel of a toric map and we introduce a modification of Sturmfels' sorting algorithm.
A New Combinatorial Property of Geometric Unique Sink Orientations
A unique sink orientation (USO) is an orientation of the hypercube graph with the property that every face has a unique sink. A number of well-studied problems reduce in strongly polynomial time to finding the global sink of a USO; most notably, linear programming (LP) and the P-matrix linear complementarity problem (P-LCP). The former is not known to have a strongly polynomial-time algorithm, while the latter is not known to even have a polynomial-time algorithm, motivating the problem to find the global sink of a USO. Although, every known class of geometric USOs, arising from a concrete problem such as LP, is exponentially small, relative to the class of all USOs. Accordingly, geometric USOs exhibit additional properties that set them apart from general USOs, and it may be advantageous, if not necessary, to leverage these properties to find the global sink of a USO faster. Only a few such properties are known. In this paper, we establish a new combinatorial property of the USOs that arise from symmetric P-LCP, which includes the USOs that arise from linear and simple convex quadratic programming.
Greedoids from flames
A digraph $ D $ with $ r\in V(D) $ is an $ r $-flame if for every $ {v\in V(D)-r} $, the in-degree of $ v $ is equal to the local edge-connectivity $ λ_D(r,v) $. We show that for every digraph $ D $ and $ r\in V(D) $, the edge sets of the $ r $-flame subgraphs of $ D $ form a greedoid. Our method yields a new proof of Lovász' theorem stating: for every digraph $ D $ and $ r\in V(D) $, there is an $ r $-flame subdigraph $ F $ of $ D $ such that $ λ_F(r,v) =λ_D(r,v) $ for $ v\in V(D)-r $. We also give a strongly polynomial algorithm to find such an $ F $ working with a fractional generalization of Lovász' theorem.

We study the neighborhood polynomial and the complexity of its computation for chordal graphs. The neighborhood polynomial of a graph is the generating function of subsets of its vertices that have a common neighbor. We introduce a parameter for chordal graphs called anchor width and an algorithm to compute the neighborhood polynomial which runs in polynomial time if the anchor width is polynomially bounded. The anchor width is the maximal number of different sub-cliques of a clique which appear as a common neighborhood. Furthermore we study the anchor width for chordal graphs and some subclasses such as chordal comparability graphs and chordal graphs with bounded leafage. the leafage of a chordal graphs is the minimum number of leaves in the host tree of a subtree representation. We show that the anchor width of a chordal graph is at most $n^{\ell}$ where $\ell$ denotes the leafage. This shows that for some subclasses computing the neighborhood polynomial is possible in polynomial time while it is NP-hard for general chordal graphs.

The inverse function $x \mapsto x^{-1}$ on $\mathbb{F}_{2^n}$ is one of the most studied functions in cryptography due to its widespread use as an S-box in block ciphers like AES. In this paper, we show that, if $n\geq 5$, every function that is CCZ-equivalent to the inverse function is already EA-equivalent to it. This confirms a conjecture by Budaghyan, Calderini and Villa. We also prove that every permutation that is CCZ-equivalent to the inverse function is already affine equivalent to it. The majority of the paper is devoted to proving that there are no permutation polynomials of the form $L_1(x^{-1})+L_2(x)$ over $\mathbb{F}_{2^n}$ if $n\geq 5$, where $L_1,L_2$ are nonzero linear functions. In the proof, we combine Kloosterman sums, quadratic forms and tools from additive combinatorics.

Symmetric edge polytopes $\mathcal{A}_G$ of type A are lattice polytopes arising from the root system $A_n$ and finite simple graphs $G$. There is a connection between $\mathcal{A}_G$ and the Kuramoto synchronization model in physics. In particular, the normalized volume of $\mathcal {A}_G$ plays a central role. In the present paper, we focus on a particular class of graphs. In fact, for any cactus graph $G$, we give a formula for the $h^*$-polynomial of $\mathcal{A}_{\widehat{G}}$ by using matching generating polynomials, where $\widehat{G}$ is the suspension of $G$. This gives also a formula for the normalized volume of $\mathcal{A}_{\widehat{G}}$. Moreover, via the chemical graph theory, we show that for any cactus graph $G$, the $h^*$-polynomial of $\mathcal{A}_{\widehat{G}}$ is real-rooted. Finally, we extend the discussion to symmetric edge polytopes of type $B$, which are lattice polytopes arising from the root system $B_n$ and finite simple graphs.

We generalize two results about subgroups of multiplicative group of finite field of prime order. In particular, the lower bound on the cardinality of the set of values of polynomial $P(x,y)$ is obtained under the certain conditions, if variables $x$ and $y$ belong to a subgroup $G$ of the multiplicative group of the filed of residues. Also the paper contains a proof of the result that states that if a subgroup $G$ can be presented as a set of values of the polynomial $P(x,y)$, where $x\in A$, and $y\in B$ then the cardinalities of sets $A$ and $B$ are close (in order) to a square root of the cardinality of subgroup $G$.
Coprime Ehrhart theory and counting free segments

A lattice polytope is "free" (or "empty") if its vertices are the only lattice points it contains. In the context of valuation theory, Klain (1999) proposed to study the functions $α_i(P;n)$ that count the number of free polytopes in $nP$ with $i$ vertices. For $i=1$, this is the famous Ehrhart polynomial. For $i > 3$, the computation is likely impossible and for $i=2,3$ computationally challenging.
In this paper, we develop a theory of coprime Ehrhart functions, that count lattice points with relatively prime coordinates, and use it to compute $α_2(P;n)$ for unimodular simplices. We show that the coprime Ehrhart function can be explicitly determined from the Ehrhart polynomial and we give some applications to combinatorial counting.

The skew Schubert polynomials are those which are indexed by skew elements of the Weyl group, in the sense of arXiv:0812.0639. We obtain tableau formulas for the double versions of these polynomials in all four classical Lie types, where the tableaux used are fillings of the associated skew Young diagram. These are the first such theorems for symplectic and orthogonal Schubert polynomials, even in the single case. We also deduce tableau formulas for double Schur, double theta, and double eta polynomials, in their specializations as double Grassmannian Schubert polynomials. The latter results generalize the tableau formulas for symmetric (and single) Schubert polynomials due to Littlewood (in type A) and the author (in types B, C, and D).

The commuting graph $Δ(G)$ of a finite non-abelian group $G$ is a simple graph with vertex set $G$ and two distinct vertices $x, y$ are adjacent if $xy = yx$. In this paper, among some properties of $Δ(G)$, we investigate $Δ(SD_{8n})$ the commuting graph of the semidihedral group $SD_{8n}$. In this connection, we discuss various graph invariants of $Δ(SD_{8n})$ including minimum degree, vertex connectivity, independence number, matching number and detour properties. We also obtain the Laplacian spectrum, metric dimension and resolving polynomial of $Δ(SD_{8n})$.
